I have no doubt a linear power supply improves on the sound of the Touch. I am not sure though that it has to be $200 or something :-). I was worried about Welborne labs after Firedog's comment. So after a few days of their email saying it has shipped I contacted and they shipped me one in UPS 3-day select. I guess it is a small time operation and sometimes when they mess up they are not owning up. But in my case they remedied it with a fast shipment. This was my second purchase from Welborne labs and my first was no problem at all. The Touch with the new Power supply is the best digital I have heard in my home. Drums are hard and have a realistic tone, stringed instruments sound like they have just been restrung and there is a "hole in the wall" like soundstaging which is very uncanny. I suggest that people who have good players/transports also check the Touch outin their main system and not relegate it to a secondary/bedroom system and if you can get a good linear power supply that is great as well (in my case, I had a modified Elpac power supply on hand and so from day one, I could not go back to using the stock switching power supply). I actually I recommend a linear powersupply for a good audiophile digital output (yes, I use only the digital output into a Panasonic Digital Amplifier based receiver. -- SoftwireEngineer SoftwireEngineer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7000 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70167 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Any audiophiles got a SB Touch to beta test?
Firedog, I know you would do that..but I was meaning to get a baseline with the Touch and the Duet+Pacecar, before you mod the Touch. I run my Touch digital output into my Panasonic Digital Amplifier receiver and since the receiver was lowend I never bothered to improved the source. Now that I have seen how much the quality of the digital signal matters I am very motivated to get the Pacecar even while running with this receiver. BTW, i have persevered with the Panasonic for 3 or 4 years and am very happy with it. I think I have to pay a few thousands in separates to get to this level of quality. I was actually running the Touch with the modded Elpac wm050, modified by Boldercables. I just sold it. Maybe it is not worth the 30 or 40 bucks I got for it. I should have just kept it. The Welborne lab guys never send out a status and reply only after you send them an email. I think it is a small shop and are overwhelmed by the business. I was happy with the quality and improvement made by the Duet power supply so that is why I have ordered one for my Touch. They said it has shipped. I will report back in a few days. Usually it takes 50hrs or so for the power supply to open up. -- SoftwireEngineer SoftwireEngineer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7000 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70167 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Be careful with wellborne labs he is a scam. Google, he very often rips off customers and do not deliver the stuff. Or incomplete kits or broken or the wrong stuff... And feed you lies trough email that the ps "is shipping" etc, after a while he stops responding to email. I have personally been ripped of by wellborne, so I have first hand experience. If you feel the need for an external ps try channel island audio (if they got any Touch supplies yet). It is often possible to use an SB3 supply, given that you don not use to much power. this basically means not using the USB conection. Touch uses a bit more amps than SB3 but the voltage and connector is the same . Hello and Welcome to the Forum. NOTE: All testing started with the Touch volume set to zero. If and only if your Naim amp does not have enough gain so that you can listen to the Touch at full volume, then using the Touch alone is OK. If not, before you damage your speakers, find out how high you can adjust the volume before its to loud and buy the appropriate set of fixed or variable attenuators for the Touch RCA outs. As far as I know, if you consider that the sound without the preamp is "better", I would suggest changing the preamp. The connector and voltage for the Touch is identical to the SB3. If you have a bus powered USB device plugged into the Touch (such as a USB hard drive) it can draw more current than an SB3. So a linear supply that has more than enough current capability for an SB3 will probably run the Touch with no problems as long as you don't have a bus bus powered drive connected. If you do want to run a bus powered drive make sure the supply can handle at least 2.5 A and you should be fine. I have personally used the DIY linear supply I use for my SB3 with the touch, it works fine. But I have not noticed any improvements in sound. The switcher that comes with the Touch is significantly better than the one for the SB3 so going with a linear supply is not nearly as big a deal. But you certainly CAN if you want to. But if you are talking about Boulder or any of the other rip-offs selling modified SB3's then not even close to a TP or even up to a Touch for that matter. By borrowing most and buying a few, I have tested almost all of them. Some actually perform worse then a base line SB3 and most only show the slightest increase on the graph which is not even enough to be enough to be heard because the improvement is so so small as to be barely the thickness of the original graphing line better. Besides by the time one buys an SB3 and gets it back from Boulder with all the possible modifications, one could have just bought a Transporter and saved $300 or more dollars and ended up with a Transporter that does play 24/96 native! By my remarks about the Transporter, please don't get me wrong as the Touch will make a fine digital transport that is a big improvement over the SB3 with the added bonus of playing 24/96 native. It is just my opinion from listening to both of them for over 6 months and testing them that the win still goes to the Transporter. I firmly believe this is especially true if both are being used for their analog outputs. The Transporter has superior analog outs. Running both digital outputs into my Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor things get much closer with again with the Transporter being the winner (but its much closer). So it comes down to how its being used as to which to buy now. IMO if one is using analog outs and has to have the best, the Transporter wins hands down. If one only needs a digital transport for a very good DAC, then I say buy a Touch. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Second Boom Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70167 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

The high-end (expensive) digital is becoming harder and harder to justify as time passes. Network digital sources crushed CD drives. Affordable D/A converters are approaching dangerously the quality of older high-end dacs. It seems as if the market of digital sources is being compressed: Excellent clocks cost nothing, 120dB dac chips cost no more and they have embedded filters and a direct output stage. You just need a clean power and you can have a source that you can hardly criticize (if you don't know the price^^). While I agree with @iPhone that the Touch is not crippled in any way, I do see a way for the Touch to be a replacement for the Transporter. The Touch is better from an audiophile standpoint than the Classic, way better. So you can argue that the Touch could take 80% or more of the TP market. Since the TP market is tiny, its not much of a stretch to have it take it all. Plus, the TP is old. While its still an impressive piece, I'm not sure that the TP has much more life. -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

The one installed in the main system has definetely been modified. I have a DIY DAC which has two very low jitter oscillators running at the same frequencies as the crystals in the SB3. I run these clocks into the SB3 where they replace the original crystals. I then take the digital signals going to the DAC chips and bring them into the DAC. They go into a FPGA which separates the left justified stream into two 1 channel streams, which go through a reclocker run by the local clock and on to the 1704 DAC chips. So I'm not using either the analog or digital out from the SB3. Its interesting to note that the analog outs sound much better in this configuration, presumably from the lower jitter clocks. Hello all, I don't mean to hijack the thread or lay off course, but this is the only appropriate thread I could find to post my question. I had read a post which is almost 2 years old at the AVS forum and it doesn't look like we'll ever have 24/96 on the SB3 due to the CPU according to Michael Valera (See below). So is the CPU still regarded as the bottleneck and should I forgo the possibility of 24/96 supported on the SB3? I don't mind upgrading to the Touch due to the newer features, but my SB3 is modded by Bolder Cable and was hoping to keep it due to the overall sound quality vs upgrading to another unit. <> http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=991049 -- zzvelik zzvelik's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10205 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70167 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Excellent info and summary - thanks John! I also found your Audio Asylum post below, which I believe helped me further understand the situation - especially (as you also stated above) that the S/PDIF performance of the Touch is likely performing better than that of the Squeezebox Classic due to the lack of a S/PDIF output filter, and thus better resulting compatibility with the digital receivers in certain external DACs... The Touch uses a voltage output DAC whose outputs go directly to the jacks, no active devices or caps in the path, its about as simple as you can get. I don't remember what the SB3 output looks like, but I did find a schematic for the SB2 which is supposed to be similar. And if so, is there any actual hardware difference that > must definitely account for it? Yes there are some significant differences in the S/PDIF implementation. In the SB3 the S/PDIF comes out of the FPGA and goes to a CMOS chip, cap, resistors etc and a EMI suppression network. The jitter on the signal coming out of the FPGA is greater than the raw clocks due to electrical noise inside. The EMI suppression network causes an impedance change with frequency which increases reflections on the connection to the DAC, this can lead to increased jitter in the DAC receiver. On the Touch the output from the FPGA gets reclocked by the clock from the oscillators. There are two oscillators so there needs to be a clock mux. In the SB3 that mux is inside the FPGA, but on the Touch its done with a very low jitter external MUX connected directly to the main oscillators. The output circuit does not have the EMI suppression network so it has a much better match to the output transmission line so reflections will be lower. The output driver seems to have been chosen so it will meet the EMI requirements without needing the separate suppression network. The result is quite a bit lower jitter at the DAC. Thanks John. I did a quick comparison the other night and I thought the SBT analog out sounded better than the SB3. But I don't completely trust that first impression because (a) it wasn't blind, (b) the SBT had better interconnects, and (c) the SBT didn't only sound better, it sounded louder, and I know all too well how those are positively correlated. Re (c) I set the volume of both the SBT and SB3 to 100, but didn't fine tune it beyond that. Can anyone tell me what the analog output level of the SBT is, because I can't find it in the specs. I know the SB3 is 6.0Vpp. And so far I'm not curious enough to go buy a SPL meter to equalize the volume levels. After getting the volume level squared away I can deal with (a) and (b). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Any audiophiles got a SB Touch to beta test?
Remember this is all just conjecture, actually being able to measure this stuff is tough. One possibility is that as code gets "tighter", the loops are smaller etc, more time is spent in code that stays in the processor cache, thus there are fewer accesses to the main RAM. With fewer accesses there will be less noise on the power and ground traces on the board. This can wind up producing lower jitter on the clock and data feeding the DAC chip and lower noise getting injected into the audio path. Its possible it can also cause less noise on the PS and GND traces from the processor itself, but it could also make it worse! Finding precise mechanisms for this sort of thing is very difficult to do, especially because there is no definitive mechanism or measurement for what causes the type of audible change I'm hearing. If we don't know what difference in the audio signal produces the difference in perceived sound, its really tough to figure how changes in softwar could produce those changes! I don't know why, the developers say the didn't do anything to the audio code. They did say that an over speedup of the code had been implemented, this might be the cause of the better analog SQ. I haven't had time to check out the S/PDIF yet to see if it had any change. BTW this did NOT take my main listening rig to hear the difference, I can clearly hear it on a $5 pair of headphones plugged directly into the phone jack on the touch!
