I like Rhapsody, and use it a lot. $10/month unlimited. They're
streaming at 192kbps.It is what it is, but I like it to listen to
new albums before buying, or to re-discover old music that I'd
forgotten.Great service.

In case you weren't aware, they already have their Pandora One service,
which streams 192kbps. It's a subscription service for $36/year. The
drawback is that it only works with their web-based player. Supposedly
they've been promising Logitech (and presumably Sonos et al.) an API
that will let it work with other players, but so far nothing tangible.

Alternatives? It depends a lot where you are. I believe Spotify streams
at a high bitrate, but it's not available in the US yet. Rhapsody does
192kbps. There are various internet radio stations that do 192kbps or
better, including Radio Paradise.

Thanks guys. I know that Pandora is compressed to hell anyway, I just
wanted to field some opinions on the matter, will check the links out
later.

Anyone Interested in putting forward some signatures to petition
Pandora to finally Re-Code to a higher bitrate?

Is there an alternative to Pandora?

For all of the reasons stated above, you are worrying unnecessarily.
1) 24-bit digital level control does not destructively "truncate bits"
and sounds fine, even at large levels of attenuation
2) Pandora is low quality anyway

Especialy when the volume operates in 24 bits, you wont loose bits,
only get slightly worse s/n ratio, thats going to be completely masked
by mp3 artifacts :p at 128kbps

Given that most RG values are quite small (4-6db), I don't think one
should lose much sleep over it. IMO, the whole "bit truncation"
issue...except for high levels of digital attenuation is nothing more
than an audio boogeyman.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Automatic Volume Adjustment?

2011-05-05 Thread Curt962

You are seeing the "Replay Gain" data that has been encoded into the
tracks. This info can be used to make albums and/or tracks all about
the same loudness, thus avoiding the problem of having to turn up the
volume for one album, and then turn it down for another to achieve the
desired listening level. Not to be confused with compression, or the
like.

Here's a Wiki link that explains it in greater detail:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_Gain

It hurts nothing, but if you don't want Replay Gain, then simply turn
it off in your SB server settings. It's good exercise to constantly
get up to fiddle with volume when playing multiple albums or tracks.
:)
