Oh, this issue is actually discussed in the replaygain FAQ : http://replaygain.hydrogenaudio.org/faq_noise.html (And the conclusion is exactly what you said : if you process a 16-bit recording through a 24-bit device, it shouldn't be a problem.) -- BlueScreenJunky BlueScreenJunky's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22725 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58274 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Just turn off using replay gain in SqueezeCenter. So adding replay gain tags is always a good idea: if you don't like the result, deactivate RP. I use it all the time and it makes a huge difference. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Should I use replaygain ?
thanx for the advice ^^ I'll probably test it out once I receive my SB3. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't too harmful for the sound quality before spending the night scanning my collection (well I won't sit in front of the computer, but still ^^), And you're right, I didn't think about the fact that I could turn it on or off very easily from the SB itself =) -- BlueScreenJunky BlueScreenJunky's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22725 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58274 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

No - the SB uses a 24-bit architecture for volume control of re-scaled 16-bit data just like top-end studios and top-end hi-fi etc There is no loss of information until the volume gets really low! Replaygain rarely does more than 10dB of reduction which is nothing in a 24-bit architecture. -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann JISCO/UPCI - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W - MF Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods)- Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters, Kimber & Chord cables Outdoors: Boombox+Creative Sub (If I remember to turn it on...) Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Should I use replaygain ?
The main advantage of replay gain is that you don't have to adjust the volume between tracks because of loudness differences. I don't exactly recall at what volume level data is actually lost but it's considerably lower than the typical replay gain adjustment. Sound quality is still affected because of the lower SNR. If it's noticeable depends on your ears and your system. You should try for yourself. Or you can enable replay gain for casual listening and disable it for critical listening. -s. -- slimpy slimpy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1524 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58274 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
