No he's not using Touch.
He is using M2Tech Evo USB to SPDIF converter.

I'm using Touch with my Naim DAC.

Anyway, we also tested 840c in my system and I know how it sounds.

Naim DAC is more natural an relaxed, with wider imaging in all
directions.

Before you look at room correction make sure you have optimised your
speaker and seating positioning (some of the Audio Physics method has
worked for me) and try out some bass traps. I am still evaluating which
kind are best for my rooms - sonically and aesthetically - but I know
from experience they work.

If after that you still want room correction do that too. There are
several reasons to do it last though.

If MF were to fit a high-quality async USB connection to the M1, I
could dispense with the Touch all together and drive the USB DAC
directly from my PC (via a USB galvanic isolator).
Actually I wouldn't dispense with the Touch, I'd keep it as a synced
display of artwork etc. As it wouldn't have any audio connections, it
can sit next to my couch and be connected by wi-fi. I might even use
the touchscreen!

In fact, this is starting to look like a very attractive proposition.
I think I'll start a new thread...

Well, lets see:
the old stack was about £900 ( I bought it all new)
The mods were ~£600 all-in

I sold this setup for ~£750 in total on eBay (including a cable I no

The M1 mods are £300

Ok. Now we're switching subject from source to active vs. passive
speakers.
Such a discussion can go on forever. You know that.

In my (and not only my) setup the modified Touch feeding that full
digital amp makes a huge difference. It even makes my 15year old
Acapella speakers shine. For quite some time I wasn't even motivated
to move on to my main system. I asked myself what else do I need.

BTW: I also run some full active ADAM speakers, beside my semi active
Bastanis Apollo main speakers.

For example, I will never use speakers with passive crossovers... they
just suck the life out of the music compared to a (good) active
configuration.

For sure every part of the system plays a role - but IME the
differences between (good) DAC's and amps are really quite small
compared to the differences available through choice of speakers.

Just 80%!?!? My DAC or amp is not making any sounds. I hear 100% coming
from my speakers. ;)

My 2 cents:

Every single part plays a major role in a pretty complex audio system.
Meanwhile I consider the source more important than the speaker
(assuming a reasonable quality device).
That doesn't mean though, that I'd spent 3000+ for a source (anymore).

I'm running a 250$ full-digital DIY amp nowadays (my Sabre and amps are
settling dust). Full digital amps (DA conversion and amplification on a
2*2cm chip) would be a disaster for the audio industry. Probably one
reason why this technology is not gaining market share. ;)

HH:

I have a Touch + CA 840C and don't get a 'forward' soundstage or
'oversized' images. These issues may be related to room/speaker
placement. I doubt you will solve them by changing the DAC, but you can
try, if you can borrow one.

Garym, thanks for the input, you are exactly right, worst is you spend
the $$$ and there is no improvement is sonic quality.

Daverz, yes, tube rolling can improve/change the sound and i have in
stock nos mullards el34, kt66 n 77 goldlion, 350b reissue by valve art
and russian 6p3e which is on my amp right now, these are all nice
sounding tubes and i switch them once awhile to adapt to my mood and
preference that time. ;)

Have anyone heard the korean brand stello? Their cda500 cdp has got
some raved review in hong kong, and i am going to seoul soon and i can
pick one up at almost half of the hk retail price. They also have a top
end model call eximus which cost around 4000usd (cda500 is 2110usd).

I have an 840C, and I think I know what you mean. I'm now using a Neko
D100, which has a more relaxed, laid back sound. It's been a while
since I've had the 840C connected. Maybe I'll do some comparisons
tonight.

And tube rolling can make a big difference. Imaging in my system seems
to have taken a leap forward after replacing the stock 6922s in my
pre-amp with some Amperex orange labels (not the most sought after
Amperex vintage, so they are relatively cheap.)

I would be quite surprised if a new DAC could solve the problem you are
having here. Could be wrong, but I'd certainly want to try something
before I spent $4,000 to end up in the same place.

Daverz, 840c is a pretty nice sounding dac, except that the soundstage
is pretty forward "in my face" as i am listening in a near field setup
in small room (could be other part of the chain but i am happy with the
amp/spkr combo), the stereo images are bit oversized. I am hoping th
imaging to be more pinpoint and solid. And a more backward
presentation. Could be speaker placement, but after 6 months of tuning
(with differenet tubes too), i think i get the best possible tonal
balance to my ears, and i am hoping better equipment can deilver for my
requirement as said above. Cheers.

What don't you like about the DAC in the 840C?

No, I mean get the transporter and use its internal DAC. After I got
the transporter, I quit using my Benchmark DAC I, which I'd been quite
happy with previously. I actually preferred the Transporter DAC.

I imagine the Klimax owners will sell their 'spare' Klimax through ebay
or the normal channels. The upgrade isn't out yet, so that's why you
won't have seen any.

imo buy a Transporter to use as a transport to another DAC is misguided
as well as wasteful. Either the Transporter is good enough (for you) or
it is not. If you want a different DAC then any decent DAC should be as
good with a Touch as it is with a Transporter. But once you mate a
streamer with a separate external DAC you are, in a sense, going
backwards by introducing s/pdif and all it's problems. Which is why a
high quality network music player, like a transport or Linn DS or Naim
NDX for that matter to me makes more sense for you.

Garym,

You mean i should get the transporter as transport and replace my dac
to a higher quality one? How much sonic difference comparing a modded
touch to a transporter? Thanks.

Rgro,

Thanks for the comment re rega dac.

I'll put in my .02 for:

I've read of the same weakness of Linn control software versus SB. I
think you have other options. A TOUCH paired with good quality DAC can
be a fantastic transport. Or pick up a Transporter from logitech. I'm
quite fond of my TRANSPORTER. You can do all this and have left
over.

A Linn Akurate or Majik seems to me the most logical way to go -
checkout the Linn Forum - they have announced an upgrade to the Klimax
DS which includes putting the old Klimax DS board in a new box, which
some owners are planning to sell on for quite modest (ie less than
Akurate DS) prices.
