Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Joam da Costa (Might be his birth record -- can't really read it) Help!

2014-03-25 Thread Dano
Joseph, I'm happy that we could provide you with at least one branch of
your family tree (Jacome Raposo dating back to circa 1525). Antonio Jacome
Raposo is Josefa's father, and, from there the puzzle was complete. I was
in the process of printing the report when I happened to see that Shirley
had already done so. It took a little while but we eventually all got on
the same page (thanks to Margaret).

BTW, I also found Matheus' and Josefa's marriage - 19-Jul-1736 (PG) + the
first four of the couple's children, also from PG - Jozeph -1737, Anna
-1739, Anna-1742, Antonia-1746 and, of course, the nearly
unreadable Nicolau (in 1751). Unfortunately, Joam wasn't among them in
Ponta Garca. I will try Arcanjo Sao Miguel next.

2014-03-25 Thread Shirley Allegre
Joe: I had printed out the ancestry of JOSEFA. It is nine (9) pages long.
If you will send me your snail mail address, I will send it to you.
I did a RELATIONSHIP SEARCH for Antonio Jacome Raposo and Cheri Mello, my
PAF program says that they are 3rd cousins, 9 times removed.

Their common ancestors are: Bras Lopes X Rimigia da Sentra.
I don't have any info on Matheus X Josefa. I still need their DOM and
where.
At least I can find the DOB for your grgrandfather Joam on 16 June 1748in

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] occupation = Lutador

2014-03-25 Thread Manuel Martins

When was the 'lutador' born? If you remember, Portugal was under
Spanish dominance from 1580 to 1640, in Terceira when the Spanish tried
to land the people fought and released the bulls after the Spaniards, I
wonder if this individual fought and was nicked named 'lutador'.

Also, the kings used many of the Azoreans to fight in the wars, he could
have been on of these soldiers.

Boxing was/is not practiced in the Azores, but one can never tell. Back
in the early 1900's basketball was played a lot.

On 3/25/2014 3:20 AM, p...@dholmes.com wrote:
I would love to hear the opinion of some native speakers about my

It is defined as fighter or wrestler, but in a society (Terceira)
where people are more concerned with feeding their families than
entertainment, could this really be the meaning? Maybe a bull fighter,
since Terceira does have them these days. But I was thinking maybe
it's more like a soldier which is usually listed as soldado.

It has been mentioned many times that is most cases, only the first name is listed at baptism in the Azores.So it struck me today while researching on the mainland that in the records I'm viewing, 1885-1886, almost every child is listed with their first two names:http://digitarq.adgrd.arquivos.pt/viewer?id=1217358To view the records, just click on any random page listed on the left side - like image 150.Just thought someone might be interested in these contrasting traditions.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

the Antonio Jacome Rapiso family going way back in time. As far as Matheus

figured that out with others in this group over the past few days. Today: I
also found their son, my fourth great-grandfather, Joam born on June 16, 1748

  John, I think I've got the family
  you're referring to. I have Matheus da Costa married to Josefa Francisca
  Pacheco (only have the year 1736 for their marriage, but we can check back to
  the original posting for that date); I don't have Matheus' parents, but,
  Josefa's a "charm," linking back hundreds of years. Her parents
  were Antonio Jacome Raposo of Nordeste who married Maria Pacheco Moniz in
  Arcanjo Sao Miguel (VFdC) on 22-Jul-1712. The family links back to
  Capitao Jorge Correia Barbosa/Maria Vieira de Albernaz, AND, even further
back
  on the Jacome Raposo link to Joao Jacome Raposo/ Francisca Roiz Cordeiro (abt
  1525). They may go back further, but, that's as far as I have. What's
  more, all of the surnames that have been mentioned in this thread are For

2014-03-25 Thread Cheri Mello
Yes, they are written out longhand. Every once in a while though, you'll
find a priest that will write 1809 at the beginning of those records.
mil = 1000
novocentos = 900
oitocentos = 800
noventa = 90
oitenta = 80
setenta = 70
sesenta = 60
cinquenta = 50
quarenta = 40
trinta = 30
vinte = 20

For a complete list, go to the Azores Genweb and click on the first link:
http://goo.gl/mWi4rq

I think the numbers are on the last page or 2nd to the last page.

The numbers seem to be the last thing that people get. And it doesn't help
that oitocentos can be written as oito centos. Or oi tocentos. Depends on
when they went back to dip the pen in the ink. And 50 can be spelled
or rather, misspelled so many ways.

It takes some practice and a lot of patience to get it, but you will get it.

We plan on spending lots of time helping people with the handwriting at our
conference.
Good luck,
Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Salt Lake City Genealogy Conference, Registration Deadline coming up on April 1st!

2014-03-25 Thread Cheri Mello
Just a reminderwe are 1 week away from the registration deadline.
Below is my post for those who missed it.
=
Our genealogy and research trip to Salt Lake City on April 15-18, 2014, is
quickly approaching!

I need a couple of weeks to work on things, so I've set the registration
deadline as April 1st (and for those dropping it in the mail on Apr 1st, I
won't get it for a few days).

For those thinking of attending, you can read more about the conference
from the Azores GenWeb page here:
goo.gl/E9FHvV

We will be able to help Madeirans, Cape Verdeans, and the continent too!

You can still book a room at the Plaza Hotel. Rooms are available, they
just are not holding them for us. Call the hotel and tell them you are
with the Azores group. If that doesn't work, tell them you want the
genealogy special. (It's the same as our deal - stay 3 nights get one
free). Also email me off list to let me know you've booked a room so I can
be sure they put you in our block!

We have people coming from Canada, Australia, and Joao Ventura coming from
Terceira!

Looking forward to meeting many of you soon!

  Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Joam da Costa (Might be his birth record --
can't really read it) Help!

  John, I think I've got the family you're referring to. I have Matheus da
Costa married to Josefa Francisca Pacheco (only have the year 1736 for their
marriage, but we can check back to the original posting for that date); I don't
have Matheus' parents, but, Josefa's a "charm," linking back hundreds of years.
Her parents were Antonio Jacome Raposo of Nordeste who married Maria Pacheco
Moniz in Arcanjo Sao Miguel (VFdC) on 22-Jul-1712. The family links back to
Capitao Jorge Correia Barbosa/Maria Vieira de Albernaz, AND, even further back
on the Jacome Raposo link to Joao Jacome Raposo/ Francisca Roiz Cordeiro (abt
1525). They may go back further, but, that's as far as I have. What's more, all
of the surnames that have been mentioned in this thread are For REAL!!!

By the way, I think I may have found another child for Matheus da Costa in
PG. And this will really make you scratch your head. This time Matheus uses the
name Matheus de Araujo! And all these names are in their immediate ancestry. So
I suggest that you start after this record and go forward in PG until you find
Joao and/or all the other siblings. You may find as you go that they have
settled on the names you know and recognize.

  Ok. I will take a further look. If anyone comes across the birth record
of Matheus' son, Joam (my 4th great grandfather, and the person I started this
thread about), please let me know. I have been unable to locate it.

The record is for Margarida and it states the godparents are Marcos da
Costa son of Antonio da Costa Piquete and Barbara da Costa and Jozepha Pacheca
mulher de Matheus da Costa residents of PG. Marcos da Costa was not yet married
(1739, PG) but he is the brother of Matheus da Costa. So you can see they are
all related to the family of Antonio da Costa Piquete and Barbara da Costa.
Hope this helps.

  The PG 1736 marriage record does state the father is Antonio Rapozo.
As I already said in my private message I also understand. My ancestor Joao da
Roia married as Joao da Costa, yet every other record stated his name was Joao
da Roia. He never used Costa again. I had a hard time finding him. But his
father was clearly Antonio da Roia.

  Anyway check this record which lists Matheus da Costa and spouse
Josepha Pacheco as godparents living in Ponta Garca. This would be right after
they married.

You're sure it's the occupation and not an alcunha after his name?

[AZORES-Genealogy] occupation = Lutador

2014-03-25 Thread pico
I would love to hear the opinion of some native speakers about my ancestor from the 1600s whose occupation is mentioned as "lutador."It is defined as fighter or wrestler, but in a society (Terceira) where people are more concerned with feeding their families than entertainment, could this really be the meaning? Maybe a bull fighter, since Terceira does have them these days. But I was thinking maybe it's more like a soldier which is usually listed as soldado.Obrigado,Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com
