[AZORES-Genealogy] Chat Programs

2019-04-23 Thread Eric Gomes
Hello everyone,

It has been years since I have been on this email. Life has become really
busy with the daughter growing up quickly and the job progressing and
changing.

I was wondering... recently in other parts of my life, I have used online
chat programs to communicate with people who have common interests (namely
some games that I play.) that live all around the world. I have friends
all over the U.S. and the World with whom I speak to on a regular basis
(Spain, Thailand, Great Britain, Michigan, Massachusetts, etc.)

I wonder if this might be something of interest to this group. So, I have
started a server that can be used for this purpose. I am using Discord and
whenever we are working on our family history, one could simply log into
the channel and if others are also online we could verbally bounce the
ideas off of each other. Just a thought I had and figured I would start
the channel and throw the invitation out there to see if there was an
interest.

Here is the website (https://discordapp.com/) where you can either login to
Discord via their website or download their chat program and chat
separately in the chat program (much like ICQ from the early 2000's).

And here is a link to the server. https://discord.gg/V96BfC

Sincerely,

--

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Half Moon Bay, CA

2014-03-17 Thread Eric Gomes
Eddie. I am not a hundred percent sure... but I did a look up in San Mateo
County for someone about a year or two ago at the library in the City of
San Mateo. Half Moon Bay is located in San Mateo County, CA. It is on the
Coast of the County. San Mateo County is the County on the San Francisco
Peninsula immediately south of San Francisco City/County. To give you an
idea. Every city between the City of South San Francisco and East Palo
Alto is in San Mateo County. If you can give me Catherine's DOD, I will
try to get over there in the next month or so. I can't commit to it 100%
though because my schedule has been extremely hectic in the last month.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hawaiian Marriages

2013-12-14 Thread Eric Gomes
Hi Group,

I called the Oakland FHC this afternoon before they closed. A friend
answered the phone and he told me how to look at their holdings. From the
FamilySearch.org Website, you select Search and then Catalog on the next
line. A search box opens and you can search by film. Below the window
where you enter the film number you can choose to limit your search to a
specific Family History Center. The long and the short of it... they have
the film I am looking for. I have to try and get there next week as they
are closed between Christmas and New Years. It should not be too difficult
since I work in Oakland about 8 miles from the library.

Thanks for the other info as well.

p.s. I still need to work on learning Portuguese. =)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hawaiian Marriages

2013-12-14 Thread Eric Gomes
Wow,

Thank you for the great response and assistance. It's always amazing how
the group can do more than the single person. I appreciate it.
Sorry for the late response, I really only have time on the weekends to
work on Ancestry stuff where I can actually sit down and put a little mind
power to it.

Gail M: The 1900 Census in Hilo, Hawaii, it says that her husband was
Naturalized. In the 1910 and 1920 Census both say that he is an Alien. He
was killed by a train in Oakland on June 10, 1927 (exactly 45 years to the
day before I was born.) In 1930 and 1940 she is again Naturalized.

Ed: Thank you for all of the resources. I am going to be busy for a couple
of weeks/years.

Gail E.: In 1900 they were in Hilo, Hawaii. I know that my great
grandfather was born there in 1897. I don't have much more information
there.

Cheri: Unfortunately, she doesn't remember much anymore. Especially about
her grandparents generation. She has no memory of her grandfather's
because they were both killed by trains (one when she was three days old
and the other mentioned above when she was 3 years old.) And yes, I will
order the test today. I had been concentrating on how I was going to get
her brother to take the test. He'll be 94 in January and failed to think
about my grandmother (probably because of the Y DNA thing.) Just curious,
how common were the immigrants from Madeira? My Gomes Side is from Madeira
Island and they arrived in 1906.

Shirley: I don't have the tree traced back further than this generation on
this branch. So, presently I am unaware of any other siblings.

Pam: Thank you.

Family History Library Question: Does anyone know if there is a way to see
what films are at each FHL??? I go to the Oakland Library a lot. And I
don't want to order the film if they already have it. =)

Thanks again,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Hawaiian Marriages

2013-12-09 Thread Eric Gomes
Hi group,

I have been thinking about my great great grandparents lately. They are
Manuel Rodrigues and Isabel Marie ???. They are my grandmother's paternal
grandparents. From what I can gather, both were born in the Azores (not
sure where yet.) However, there was an age gap of 14 to 16 years between
them. He was born in 1854 and she was born in 1870 - 1872. According to
the 1920 census, he immigrated to Hawaii in 1874 and she in 1890.
Unfortunately, the census takers made an error here because according to
the 1900 Census when they were living in Hawaii, their oldest son was born
in Hawaii in 1886. My great-grandfather, Joaquin Rodrigues was born on the
Big Island on December 1, 1897.
I do not know her maiden name and my grandmother cannot remember it. She
is now 87 years old. I have also tried to locate both of them on the
passenger lists on LUSAWEB.com without success. I presume they were
married in Hawaii. I am wondering if there is a resource for church
records on the islands?

In some of the census's, it says that she was Naturalized. I am going to
check to see if she is in the databases at the local court house the next
time I am over there. Just wanted to bounce this off the group and see if
anyone else has any ideas.

The family moved to California by the 1910 Census.

Any thoughts will help.

Thanks

[AZORES-Genealogy] My turn for a trip...

2013-04-17 Thread Eric Gomes
I am headed West next week and will be headed to the Islands for the week.
I will be on Oahu beginning this Saturday. Unfortunately, I can't get to
Maui or Hawaii. I am hoping that I can fit some time in for records
research. We will be staying in the hills above Honolulu. Is there
somewhere I can go to do some research relatively local to Honolulu?

Thanks in advance.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Great Grandfather's House.

2012-11-04 Thread Eric Gomes
Hi all,

I am writing to pick some brains. My 87-year-old grandmother is getting on
a ship to Hawaii in the morning. My aunt that is traveling with her said
that she wants to see the house that he lived in. We believe he lived in
Papaikou, Hawaii. Does anyone have any ideas on resources that I can scour
to find this information from CA? His name is Joaquin Joseph Rodrigues and
he was born on December 1, 1897 in Papaikou, Hawaii. The birth city
information is according to my grandmother. I can only find information
in the 1900 Census for Hilo Hawaii. Were there city directories? Any
"help" would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Linhares Family

2012-01-07 Thread Eric Gomes
I didn't even think about sending the information... I guess because the
general idea implied on the list has been that you have to go back to the
early 1800's before people usually have a link to other's family. Here is
the information

*Generation 1*

1. Marianna Cabral: born 9 Apr 1900 in Hilo, Hawaii, USA; died 25 May 1966
in Alameda, California, USA.

*Generation 2*

2. Manuel Cabral: born abt 1871 in Sao Miguel, Azores; died 24 Apr 1925 in
Oakland, Alameda, California, USA.

3. Mary Isabel Linhares: born 8 Nov 1875 in Sao Miguel, Azores; died 13 Sep
1947 in Oakland, Alameda, California, USA.

*Generation 3*

6. Agostinho Linhares: born in Sao Miguel, Azores.

7. Isabel Dos Angos: born in Ponta Delqada, Sao Miguel, Azores.

*Generation 4*

12. Francisco Linhares.

13. Maria Candida: born in Sao Miguel, Azores.

And as usual, looking at the information from a different perspective... in
this case the Ahnentafel Report above, I see Ponta Delgada. I may have
found my answer... but I would still appreciate it if you or anyone on the
list have relations to this family or information relating. =) And of
course, I figure this out at the END of my two-week vacation... so it will
have to wait until I can find some free time to go back to the library.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] marraige records

2012-01-06 Thread Eric Gomes
I do have to say... it is time for a happy dance!!! [?] I found three
people (not two) when I went to the cemetery. I know I said that I would
be a second set of eyes; however, I was out there last week and (at first)
I looked and could not find the graves.

As I said in a previous email, the people at this cemetery are VERY
helpful. I went back in and confirmed with them the locations of the
graves and went back out to the site. They even gave me a piece of paper
with the other graves in the surrounding area, so I could narrow the area
down and make sure I was in the correct spot. It turns out I wasn't in the
correct spot the first time, I was actually a row off when I was looking
for Alfred Lindinha...

Oh and there is another surprise (and this is why I fulfilled the request
on Find a Grave.) They are not buried under the name Lindinha on the
markers; however, the office records do, in fact, reflect Lindinha. The
surname on all three markers is Moniz. The person buried next to Alfred is
the person buried next to him on the piece of paper that the office
provided, so I am very certain that I have the correct marker.

Let me know if you need anything else. =-)

p.s. I will email you the actual pictures in a couple of minutes.

2012-01-06 Thread Eric Gomes
Thank you Eric and Dano,

I am trying to narrow down the part of Sao Miguel where my great-great
grandparents lived on Sao Miguel. The family names were Linhares and
Rodrigues. This will hopefully narrow things down a bit to help my
search. Thank you.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Linhares Family

2012-01-04 Thread Eric Gomes
Hi List,

I was (am still) at the Oakland FHL today and it was suggested that I try
and find out which town on Sao Miguel had Linhares in it. This is to help
narrow down the bigger search that I have to do to locate the family. If
anyone has Linhares from Sao Miguel, and you happen to know which area they
are from, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Google

2011-08-17 Thread Eric Gomes
This is because google has programs that are "crawling" the web and gathering
"key words" from all over the web "indexing most pages that are on the web.
This is a google group and it is automatically indexed by their software
because it is stored on their computer servers.

(I started this email a day ago and checked the list. So if this is old info,
sorry)

These crawlers can also be programmed to gather emails, so instead of putting
your email as b...@blah.com, write it out in words... Blah at blah dot com.
While sooner or later the "crawlers" may be programmed to look for that as
well, it will (hopefully) slow them down.

Just my two cents...

I walked in there last month and it has been remodeled... most of the
readers are gone. I have heard that there are films from the Azores there
but each and every time I go there... no one can direct me to them. I don't
know if I would know what to look for in there if I did find them for now...
The room is now a vast array of computers... all updated and nice. They
changed the lighting in the room and it is a nice update. But again, many
of the readers are gone.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Brickwall Broken!

2011-04-02 Thread Eric Gomes
Ironically,

I have another great-great grandfather on my maternal side that worked for
Southern Pacific in Sacramento... as far as I know he was working as an
attendant at a railroad crossing in the early 1900's... apparently there
was a runaway car or something and he tried to jump onto it to stop the
car... unfortunately he ended up underneath it and lost his arm... and a
little time later, he lost his life due to complications from the
injuries... Uh oh, I changed the subject on my own thread. =)

[AZORES-Genealogy] Brickwall Broken!

2011-04-01 Thread Eric Gomes
I did itI broke down my first serious brickwall today...

I have been trying to find where my great-great grandfather, Manuel
Rodrigues is buried. He immigrated to Hawaii in the 1880's from the Azores
and then the family immigrated from Hawaii in 1906...

So... according to family lore, he was killed by a train in Oakland when my
grandmother was a child. She has no memory of him or her other grandfather,
Manuel Cabral, who was also killed by a train in Oakland in 1925 when she
was 3 days old.

Well, I finally found him... I have searched the internet, been to the
Oakland Family History Center on several occasions, used City Directories,
pulled the California Death Index from the Oakland Public Library, looked
through numerous micro film rolls of the Oakland Tribune and the Hayward
Daily Review at the Oakland Public Library and California State University
HAYWARD (I refuse to call it East Bay) to no avail... well, it turns out,
the CA death index had him listed as Manuel RodrigueZ

I was at Cal State Hayward today and was looking for Manuel Rodriguez in
the June 10, 1927 Oakland Tribune... I first found an article of an
unidentified elderly man that was struck by a Southern Pacific Electric
Train... the type that used to travel across the Oakland Bay Bridge on the
first level... that was my first clue... In the June 12, 1927 obituaries, I
found him listed. I know it is him because the address matched and the
middle initial matched... he is the only Manuel A Rodrigues in several
different sources. Pay Dirt... =) I will request the death certificate the
next time I am in Oakland... and I plan on traveling to Sacramento on my
next day off to see if there are any records at the Railroad Museum. And
now for the serendipity...

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need Computer Guru's Help Win XP vs Win 7 Family Tree Maker Question

2011-03-21 Thread Eric Gomes
Hi Elaine,

Since you are running Professional... what you will need to do is download
the emulator from the Windows site. Here is the webpage that you need to go
to... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx You will
need to know whether it is a 32-bit or 64-bit system. If I ventured to
guess, it is probably a 64-bit system. In order to get this information,
left-click on the Start button (Circle with the Windows Logo in it) in the
lower left corner of your screen... then right-click on the word "computer"
that is on the right side of the panel that pops up... a window will open up
that says "View basic computer information"... about mid-page it says
"System Type" and it will tell you whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. It is
very important that you know this information because the software will not
run if you mismatch it... follow the rest of the prompts through the
download etc... unfortunately, this is where I must admit, I have no other
knowledge of this process, I am still only running windows home premium and
don't have the option to run the emulator. So I must say good luck... I
will still say though, if you have any questions, feel free to send them my
way and if I can answer them I will...

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need Computer Guru's Help Win XP vs Win 7 Family Tree Maker Question

2011-03-20 Thread Eric Gomes
I know this string is relatively mature on the board but I will add my 2
cents...

First, you have referred to the computer on several occasions as a netbook.
Historically, netbooks are less powerful computers that have limited memory
and limited processing speed. Adding those two together gives you a
computer that has an overall lower level of performance. While the price
level is very affordable, this category of computers was introduced at CES
two to three years ago to serve the people that wanted a computer that they
can email and do their other word processing needs. They are not meant for
running programs such as the FTM and the like, because of the resources
needed to run the programs. I would look into running RootsMagic or the
mobile version of Roots Magic. Legacy may work on the computer as well...
(Legacy Note: I have no knowledge of whether it will work, I am basing this
on the fact that Celeste won a copy of the software with the netbook that
she won in the drawing at the Family History Expo last year in Pleasanton,
CA)

Second, Cheri mentioned in an earlier post that there is a way to run older
programs in Windows 7... and the answer is yes there is... she also
correctly said that it is in the higher versions of Windows 7...
Professional and Ultimate. Unfortunately, if your computer is a true
netbook... it likely does not have the power and performance ability to run
Windows 7. I would visit a local Best Buy and ask the geek squad or ask a
tech savvy relative or neighbor that you trust before you spend the $199.00
minimum for the upgrade.

So there you have my two cents... if you have any questions Elaine, please
feel free to email me your questions or I can send you my phone number off
the board to talk directly. It also sounds like you are in good hands with
your son...

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Birth and Death records....dates don't add up for this same person

2011-02-13 Thread Eric Gomes
Here is my guess:

When it comes to a death certificate... The age calculation is not derived from
a primary source. If his wife was the person to give the information, she was
most likely not there at his birth; therefore, I would not rule out that this
is your relative because the person may not have known his actual age.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Travel from Azores to West Coast or West Coast to Azor...

My great grandparents (grandfather's parents) Victorino (B:Nov 17, 1883, d Jan.
1951) and Mary Gomes traveled through "the horn" to Honolulu, HI in 1906.

My Great-great grandparents Manuel and Mary Rodrigues traveled through "the
horn" between 1887 and 1889.

I have not researched the ship records for when the Cabral side of the family
made the same trip, however both of my great grandmother from the Cabral and my
great grandfather from th Rodrigues side (mentioned in the previous pargraph)
were born in Hawaii.

I wonder if there are relatives in the tree that immigrated to the East Coast
instead of Hawaii. But that is for another thread.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Is anyone else having this problem - Google computer problem

2010-11-18 Thread Eric Gomes
I know this is off topic for the group, i am going to send it this once...

It sounds like you may have a virus or something.

I initially wrote the message below first... Then I reread your email...

First uninstall the google toolbar and see if it fixes your problem. You
uninstall it by right clicking on the toolbar and clicking on uninstall. If
that does not do the trick try the steps below...

Go to www.eset.com (or another internet security website) and run the online
virus scan.

If you cannot get onto the website(www.eset.com), then you probably have a
virus of some sort and will need to do something more evasive.

If you run the scan and a virus comes up, and you have a virus scan on your
system... Update the virus scan and run a COMPLETE scan on your computer.

If no virus comes up, then in windows explorer, select Microsoft Update (it's
in one of the command lists) and update your computer. If it asks you to
reboot your system, turn the system off and back on and run the update again.
Repeat these steps until there are no more updates.

Then try to get on ancestry or google again.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] St. Alphonsus Catholic Church Records - Suisun, CA

2010-11-16 Thread Eric Gomes
Suisun, Ca is right next to Vacaville, CA. and I believe it is in Solano, CA.
It is located in the Northern Bay Area. Best land mark that I can think of is
the intersection of interstate 680 and intrastate 80.

Hope this helps a little...

Cal State Hayward also has a good set of microfilm for some of the newspapers,
Oakland Tribune, Hayward Daily Review, Los Angeles Times (I think) and some
others. I will have a day off on the 17th, I can't guarantee that I can do any
research, but if I can and I have the info I will see what I can do.

Hi Shirley,

I don't remember how much but Alameda County charges for look-ups. The county
website is www.acgov.org and I know I have found the info previously. I work
for the County, but I rarely get to Oakland.

I will look up his name when I get home on the divorce index through

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Translation of Baptismal Record for Deolinda Vieira

You can also download the "chrome" browser from google.com and when you go to a
foreign website it asks you if you want the browser to use Google translate to
translate the website into English or which ever language you prefer. It has a
little difficulty when a webpage has windows within the webpage... Usually it
works pretty well.

Sorry for the topic tangent but I figure this is a good tool for translation.

I am not sure... But Cal Sate (Hayward) East Bay may have the Mercury News in
their micro film collection. If they do, and you can narrow down a date
range... I work in Hayward and can take a lunch break and see what I can
find... Printing is free...

Sorry,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Numbers and Notes

2010-06-20 Thread Eric Gomes
Hi,

I originally obtained this record from the National Archives in San
Francisco. Recently, it was scanned and put on Ancestry.com. When I
originally found this, the person at the archives that helped me locate this
document explained what the different numbers around my relatives names
meant. However, I wasn't able to write notes as he was explaining the
meaning. I was wondering if you could help me and explain them. My Great
Grandfather, Great Grandmother, and Great Uncle are line 5-7 on this
document. Can you help me decipher the notes??

Thanks,

Cindy,
I may have a lead for you. My 4G grandparents, Ursula Pimentel born
Santa Cruz Flores, married to Pedro de Freitas, born Mosteiro,
Flores, married 17 June 1734 in Santa Cruz Flores. Ursula died 08
Aug 1775, Caldeira, Flores. They had a lot of Freitas de Pimentel
descendants (who usually went by "Pimentel"), many of whom I grew
up with in the Fresno California area. One of their descendants is
my 5th cousin Dr. David Pimentel, Professor emeritus of Cornell
University who several years ago ran (and lost) on the "outsider"
ticket for some high office in the Sierra Club. He, I believe was
born in the New Bedford area. Unfortunately, I haven't ever met him.

Got a lucky break and found a marriage record in New Bedfordand it
confirmed family lore that my great-grandma Maggie Pimentel (Margarida
Ursela Pimentel) was indeed, from Flores. Also got her parents' names
on that record. Double Score. I thought my great-grandfather was
Sylvia or Silva, but no, marriage record has Da Silvawhich
explains why I couldn't find much of anything for the past 3 years.
Doh! Made a giant pot of cacciola and had the family in to
celebrate!

My family tree was written by first generation American Sylvias and a
big mistake was made in hand copying (before copy machines) and listed
Frank Pimentel and Annie Martin as Maggie's parents which did not
agree with that New Bedford marriage record at all so it's been
sitting on the back-burner for at least a year. After digging through
some family papers and carefully reading all the little pencil notes
on the original note paper, turns out, Frank is Maggie's brother, not
father. So now it all makes sense and I can put everyone where they
belong. Sheesh!

1984], Justin Gomes [b: 20 Dec 1918, d: 28 Feb 1991], and Antone Gomes [b:
Nov 1920, not sure if he is still alive]) were born in the Territory of
Hawaii. My grandfather's oldest brother (Manuel Gomes [ b: 5 Dec 1905 d: 20
Apr 1983]) and his parents (Victorino Gomes [b: 17 Nov 1882 d: 29 Jan 1952]
and Mary de Jesus Sousa [b: 15 Sep 1885 d: 6 Jul 1966] were born on the
Island of Madeira. I know that they were married in Santa Maria Maior were
born in 1905

I know that the family (Victorino Gomes, Mary Jose de Souza and Manuel
Gomes) traveled to Hawaii from the Island of Madeira on the S.S. Luveric
leaving on 10 Oct 1906 and landing in Honolulu on 1 Dec 1906. And then I
have found records that the family traveled from Honolulu, Hawaii to San
Francisco on the USS President Cleveland on 27 Jun 1923.

Any help, hints, direction, assistance would be helpful. =)

I'll talk about my paternal grandmother's side of the family at some later
point, however, I will say that my grandmother is a Rodrigues and her mother
is a Cabral. =)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: St. Joseph Cemetery in Hayward, CA

2010-04-20 Thread Eric Gomes
Actually, I was just wondering where the cemetery was in Hayward and I
actually forgot about that cemetery on Walpert. =)

I don't have any family buried there. All of my immigrant ancestors from
Portugal are burried either at Holy Sepulchre in Hayward or St. Mary's in
Oakland. I have one great grandfather, Manuel Rodrigues who passed away in
1928 in Oakland, CA that I have yet to find the gravesite.

In regards to my family travelling from the Azores... to Hawaii.

Gomes Side of the family:

My g-grandparents Manuel Gomes (b: 17 Nov 1883, d: 29 Jan 1952) and Mary
Jose de Souza (b: 15 Sep 1885, d: 6 Jul 1966) were married in the Azores in
1904. My g-grandparents and my great-uncle Manuel Gomes (b: 5 Dec 1904 d:
20 Apr 1983) travelled to Honolulu arriving in December of 1906. Seven of
my great-uncles and a great-aunt were born in Hawaii and in 1920, the family
emigrated to Oakland, CA where my grandfather was born in 1924 or 1925. All
but one or two of the children from this family are buried at Holy Sepulchre
in Hayward.

About a year ago, I found one of the regional Archive websites in the Azores
that allowed me to trace back to my gg-grandparents (Gomes Family) but I
just have names written down somewhere... nothing else.

Rodrigues Side of the family:

My g-grandfather Joaquin Rodrigues (b: 1 Dec 1897 d: 6 Apr 1978) was born in
Hawaii and his wife, Mary Anna (Marianna) Cabral (b: 9 Apr 1900 d: 25 May
1966) was born in Hilo, Hawaii. Each of their parents emigrated from
Portugal prior to their births and very little is known about their travels
because I have not learned how to research this information that occurred
prior to Hawaii becoming a territory of the US in about 1906. I do know
that this family travelled to Oakland, CA in about 1906.

I believe that Manuel Rodrigues and Mary Agrella, my gg-grandparents were
both born in Sao Miguel, Azores. I also know that Manuel Cabral (b: about
1871 d: 24 Apr 1925, Oakland, CA) and his wife, Mary Isabell Linhares (b: 8
Nov 1875 d: 13 Sep 1947) were also born in Sao Miguel, Azores. However, I
do not have any information for them in regards to their travel to Hawaii.

In regards to all the immigrant g-grandparents and gg-grandparents I don't
have much information from when they were in the Azores.
