Since you are on the Azores group I assume you have a connection there. A lot
of people from the group have done Family Tree DNA. You have a greater chance
of matches and Cheryl Mello is very helpful.

I'm new to this group and my family is from Terceira. My Great Grand
Father was Jose Coelho Pinheiro and his father was Vital Pinheiro
Lourenco. So I know that there are quite a few Pinheiro's there. My
family was from Altares.

As I said, I'm new to this but hopefully this might help.

This looks like it could be St. Cruz. Don't know what Bria is? This
was written by a non-Portuguese who was spelling from a broken English
pronunciation at best. I ran into this with one of my family's
records and they really slaughtered the spelling.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Fregoisia on Faial for Bria St. Cres. residence

2010-01-08 Thread cnsport

 Group,

My cousin found out her grandmother Mary (Pine) Anselmo was from the island of
Faial. A great uncle Manuel Pine was naturalized and had come from Faial 10
Dec 1883 to New Bedford on the Whaling Bark Commodore Morris.

His residence in Faial was listed as Bria St. Cres. Is that recognizable to
anyone? We are trying to find the fregoisa they came from. The whaling crew
records are only until 1860. He came to California in May 1884.

She only listed the Azores on her records. We can't find any ship records.

Thank You for any help,

 Pat (Dutra/Anselmo) Nostrome

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Pico

2010-01-07 Thread cnsport

 Hi Gayle and others,

I am starting to try and research Pico from microfilms.

My grandmother Mary Dutra came from Silveira, Pico as did at least three
sisters and brothers.(Manuel, John, Mariana,Catherine and Frances)

The father's name was Joao Pereira Dutra and the mother was a Brum. We think
Catharina.

Just got a microfilm to see if I can find them. Just had census records and
now since to this group have some passenger lists and NEPS information.

According to the Biblioteca Genealogica de Lisbon website this was just

Kaylene,

In order to
research Azorean records, you need to know the freguesia (village) where he
  was born.?

You'll need to use NZ sources to trace your immigrant.
I've never had to use those records, so I'll just have to guess.? You'll
want to find his obit and death record from NZ.? If he naturalized, you'd
want to order those records.? If you can trace him on censuses there,
look at those too.? Get his marriage record from NZ as well as the
  church.

I'm pretty sure Sim miss is an Anglicization of Simas.? He
chose to honor his mother's line.? Portuguese people did
  this.

This is written from an American point of view but may give you
other ideas of what to look for, but you'd do it via the NZ records
  instead.

Marianna was there but Jorge may have died in Sao Jorge.
Most are buried in the cemetary on the hill outside of Sausalito.

>From my grandmothers side:

Joseph Oliveira and Contancia de Azevedo married in Sao Jorge and went

Sausalito where her father worked for the city street dept.
Contancia's sister married a Teixeira. They are buried in the same

My question is how do I find the town they were originally from on Sao
Jorge? I've hit a brick wall on both families. By the way I remember
hearing as a child that the Azevedo families were not related. But
perhaps they are.

 Shirl,

The Susana Goulart Costa book 'Azores, Nine Islands, One History' mentions the
Bensaude family in Sao Miguel arriving in the 1820s and paying a central role
in the economic activity of the Azores.(page 309)  She mentions a study
conducted by Fatima Sequeira Dias demonstrating their success.  They expanded
into Faial and made inroads into the navigation business.  The patriarch of the
family, Abraham Bensaude, began by investing in trade with England.

If you haven't seen it you may want to and look for the study.

together to the US (Boston) about 1858, and eventually settled in
Hamburg, IA where Immaneul died. Anna left Iowa with son, George
Nathan Gracier Serpa Davina and moved to Oklahoma.

All of the DAVINA children had "Gracier Serpa" as their middle names.
Could that be a family name? Two REIS cousins came to America with
Anna to care for the children, but I don't know their names.

I am interested in any others researching these names to help find
their parents in the Azores.

Thank you -
Kim Bierbaum

Hi Pat,

My first reaction to Mary Bell Pine is that maybe Bell is an
anglicized/simplified version of Botelho? Mary Botelho Pine?
Familysearch.org has a Maria Pine born in 1890 in Ribeira Quente.

You'll have to wait to hear from

I

Hi,

I have PEREIRA's from Sao Jorge, too. This info is taken from ship
manifests.

Ermelinda Beatriz PEREIRA, b. 22 Dec 1896 (later Americanized to
Emily B. Perry)
from Urzelina, Velas, Sao Jorge

arrived Boston, MA 3 Sep 1913 (age 16y, 8m)

lived in New Bedford, MA until 1918

moved to and spent the rest of her life in Oakland, CA

d. 27 Aug 1989, in Oakland, CA

Her Mother:
Guilhermina Gloria PEREIRA. Her maiden name might have been FREITAS,
but right now I'm not 100% sure. I have no idea what the
Americanized version of Guilhermina would be.

b. 1865
from Calheta, Sao Jorge

arrived Providence, RI, 17 Jul 1915 (age 50)

lived in New Bedford and then went to CA. My last record of her is
the 1920 Census when she is living with her daughter (Emily) and
granddaughter:

Patricia PERRY, b. 16 Apr 1919 in San Francisco, CA, and d. 20 Oct
2003 in Danville, CA

Patricia's sister: Marie PERRY, was b. 23 May 1921 in Oakland, CA

I don't know what happened to Guilhermina after 1920. She may have
moved elsewhere or passed away.

Does anyone recognize these people? And does anyone know what the
Americanized version (if there is one) of the name Guilhermina would
be?

Thank you,

Ginger

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: researching Frias, Victorino from Sao Miguel

2009-03-02 Thread cnsport

 Cheryl,

You could go to the LDS center (Mormon Church no charge) near you and ask for
help in ordering a microfilm for Matriz,Lagoa, Sao Miguel, Azores.  They filmed
alot of these areas.  They charge six dollars and change to rent the use of a
microfilm.  After it comes you can read it on the readers.  It is tough work
but fun when you find something.

Did you look on the Islandroots.com for Medeiros and Frias.  You can look by
the village or town name and hopefully find the ship Antone came to Hawaii on.

On the Azores archive you can look at the passports for San Miguel.  They don't
have the other things for San Miguel online yet.  If you find the ship and
dates on Islandroots then it is easier to look at the passports.

Hope this helps alittle,
Pat (Vieira Anselmo) Nostrome

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] My Dad - Anthony de Sousa Furtado from Ribeira
Grande, Sao Miguel

My father is now home with me again and we
have hospice coming in. I went through this with my mom seven and half years
ago.

He will be the last that I know of on my
Furtado’s line since my brother, male cousins did not have sons or did
not marry. One brother is left at the age of 77. The female lines are carrying
down the Furtado’s at this point. My grandson is due Monday though he
knew he was going to be a ggrandfather, but unfortunately will not be there
since he is making his transition to the other side as I write this email. Life
will go and yet another life will come.

I am missing him already, but he will be
at peace and with my mom since he has had a long poor health history.

I wish he was much healthier when I
started with this group because he would have been able to help me and others
on our ancestory. He didn’t really know his background as I would have
liked him to, but like we all talked about that they never discussed their
heritage. It wasn’t somethi
ng they did or was important I guess.

Hawaii index to passengers put in name may get record

It brings your name up on a different ship.? Try it.? You can contact the
Portuguese Genealogy people in Hawaii and ask them to check the passenger lists.

My Anselmo's come up on the Highflyer 2nd voyage.? The dates vary on different
sources and which end of the trip.? You probably saw this list.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Baptism time lapse question

2008-10-06 Thread cnsport
Kathy,

One of the Vieira Anselmo family brothers that I could translate from Ribieira
Seca, Ribieira Grande Sao Miguel? waited?from December?24 1871 until Jan 28
1873?to baptize him.? This was at the church of San Pedro.? So they did
sometimes delay it.
I haven't translated the other two yet that I can actually read most of.? I
don't know too much of the history but I?know they stayed on San Miguel until
going to Hawaii in 1881 and Pleasanton, CA in 1893.

This spurs me on to try to translate more.

Hope it helps alittle,
Pat Nostrome

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Baptism time lapse question

Hi Everyone

I have a?question?for the group to see if a certain scenario is plausible...

A child is born around 1894 in Santa Ana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is not
baptized at that time, but only after the family returns to Terceira about 9
months after his birth. I always thought that?baptisms?were usually done fairly
soon after a child's birth. Do you think it s possible that a family, maybe
knowing they planned to return to their homeland of Terceira, would wait and
NOT baptize the child until they did return to Terceira?

This person is my husband's grandfather. He was born Joao Cardozo Esteves,
according to his Naturalization and Alien Registration papers. I have searched
for his baptism for years in the microfilmed records of Rio, but have not found
him. A baptism back in Terceira could explain not finding any records in Rio.
Of course, it could just mean I haven't found the right location yet. ?:) He
left Angra, Terceira in 1914 and immigrated into Boston, settling in Alameda
County, CA under the name of John Cardoza.?

So, anyone have any thoughts on this? I'd sure appreciate the feedback.

Thanks.

Kathy

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Problem (?) on ancestry.com

2008-09-03 Thread cnsport
Yes this happened to us.? Someone saw a similar name and took our whole tree
except for my great grandfather and attached it under hers.

I contacted her and asked questions.? I found information on her real
connection and gave it to her.? I explained why we could not be on the same
line and how the ages etc were impossible.

She then removed it.? My cousins were very upset.? It happened after one had
made our tree public.? Ancestry will do nothing.? It's up to you.? It was a
different island and part of the name was different.

My cousins tried to remove our trees then but Ancestry still keeps
connections.? I hate the hints for this reason.? Everyone is not careful.? Also
our pictures.? I have Ancestry but was reluctant to put our information out
there.

Good luck,
Pat (Dutra/Vieira Anselmo) Nostrome

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Problem (?) on ancestry.com

Has anyone else had this experience on ancestry.com?

I have a family tree online. When you bring up your, tree ancestry has
links to "hints" for information that might apply to a person in the
tree. This last time I found the "hints" were actually my ancestors
that someone else had put in their tree. They didn't appear to be
linked from my tree but the information was exactly as I have it.

There is no way my ancestors can be part of this family (unless they
are very distant cousins, of course). In fact, the way they are
presented, some of the parents started having their family of six
children when the mother was in her 40s and the father much older.
It's so scrambled that I think the person even linked these same
people to a previous generation.

I'm tempted to just ignore the whole thing. But I wonder if I should
contact the maintainer of that tree to see if they can verify the
relationships?

I'm thinking that people may see these "hints" and just automatically
accept them. I know that some of the "hints" that have been presented
to me are not even from the same island and even a similar name from
the mainland. I must also add that the "hints" have provided useful in
finding the people in census and other documents.
