Re: [backstage] Google Wave - Too early for consumers

2009-12-03 Thread Matt Hammond
As the banner graphic on Wave points out: its a "preview" - in my
understanding that means it is not even something they'd consider calling
a beta.

My gut feeling is that performance issues are as likely to be down to the
client implementation as the servers - I think I'm noticing gradually
worse slowdown the longer I use a session in a tab. Also look at your CPU
usage when, for example, you use the history "playback" function, or open
a particularly complex or long lived Wave.

I can't say I agree with Andy Chesters - Google announced the open source, open
standard nature of Wave right back when the project itself was made public at
Google I/O 2009:

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/went-walkabout-brought-back-google-wave.html

No desire to "to hide the fact that the technology is not exclusive to Google"
that I can see.

I'm also not convinced that the performance issues with the Wave beta are
mainly (or even slightly) due to the fact that all the current Wave servers are
running in Google's data centres. Surely the spread of Wave servers to the far
corners of the Internet will make things worse, as bandwidths fall and latency
rises between the servers participating in a given Wave? Waves with
participants who all use the same server might see a performance increase I
guess, all other things being equal.

Right; the protocol seems sound enough, and I expect that (like
Novell) it will get picked up by projects that would have had to have
done the engineering on such a protocol themselves.

But there are relatively few of those projects, and so I don't expect
it will be soon that we see anything 'wow'-worth out of Wave. I think
it will get subsumed by projects that use it and we will know those by
their own names and indeed may come to know Wave itself by those
names; like people who use the web and that the web _is_ the
internet...

> wondered if Google had put out wave too early for consumers?

As Scot said, its hardly had a consumer release. Anyone who is
involved in projects that might make use of such technology have heard
about it, understand it, and probably by now have a beta account.
What's the fuss? :-)

"Had Google have waited maybe a year or two longer, and launched a slicker

I think Wave would never have been a slick product at release, no matter how
long they kept it either closed completely or in developer only preview. Had
they waited longer it might have been a bit quicker and a bit less buggy,
but it would still have left a lot of people confused. In order to be a
great product, it's going to need a lot of people giving it it a try and
telling Google what works and what doesn't. Which means releasing a half
baked product to relatively few people and telling them from the start that
it's half baked and that their comments and criticisms are needed - which is
what the Wave team have done.

Thinking about it, I would challenge that it has been put out to
"consumers". When Wave is open to everyone without an invite, then it will
have been released to consumers. At the moment, most of the people using are
more early adopter than average consumer.

Not yet - they've not added a 'remove participant from wave' feature yet
(hence its still preview).

You can however select the wave in your inbox and click 'trash' from the
buttons at the top. My understanding is that the difference between that
and the 'archive' button is that an archived wave will pop back into you
inbox if someone edits it; but a trashed one will not.

I guess I would have expected some sort of 'you have been added to this
wave, do you accept?' notification and a notification to all other users
that you got added

I think you have to think about it more like a wiki, where items in your
inbox are ones you want to hand. Ones you archive are ones you want to
know about changes to; and ones you trash you are no longer interested in.
Being added as a participiant is therefore kinda (not totally) like being
sent a link to that wiki page with the invitation to edit it.

One or more of the files you selected could not be uploaded. They may be

I tired larger and worked my way down, then got bored.

I’d recommend waiting for a self-hosted server for “proper” use. I’d
consider Google’s server to be more of a proof-of-concept than
anything useful for real purposes.

If the UX was cleaned up and streamlined a bit, then yeah, could
supplant mailing lists/discussion groups to an extent.

I've found it a bit problematic- there's nothing wrong with the day to

considering what it's trying to do. However, the 'contriibutor

It's really hard to find other users in Wave.

Can't say it's bowled me over - I think it's been rather overhyped. And
ultimately if it's to replace email or IM, it needs to be far simpler.
My mum wouldn't have a clue.

I also have 16 left. If you'd like one, you're welcome.

I wouldn't get excited though. I'm still not really impressed by it.

It can be really nice if you have a few friends who also have it,
conversations move from just being gimmicky fun to actually being quite
engaging if you start to use its multimedia features. However, I'm unsure as
to its usefulness as a business tool just yet - I'm open to persuasion
though as long as it's actually justifiable ;)

Not true. The 100,000 people who got invitations on October 1st all had
8 invitations to give away (presumably on the basis that a communication
tool is pretty useless unless you know other people using it).

As I understand it, the 800,000 people who got those "second level"
invitations didn't get any other invitations to pass on.

And, no, I don't have any invitations left.

I really hope it works out for you.

It's possible it will grow on me, but at the moment I
was just *bored* by it from what I've seen of it so far.

I kind of like how I have an email client, IM client and a wiki and am a
bit uncomfortable and nonplussed by them all being put in one place.

When there is a native, free software application which isn't as
resource hungry as the AJAX *abuse* going on there I might feel a bit
more encouraged.

We'll see what happens, but to be honest, if it was a choice between a
pony and a google wave invite, a pony is probably going to be more exciting.

P.s. anyone who thinks they need a google wave invite to be cool should
sign up to pokebook.co.uk - you'll be so cool you won't need wave at all. ;)

My understanding, and it could be incorrect, is that the first

that is, the original 100,000, followed by the invitations given to

I wouldn’t hold my breath for more invitations being issued any time

Now Google Wave invites are out there and more of you have had a
chance

to play with wave. What do people think? And why is no one building a

Give it time… the people most likely to do this may not even have

Nope. It shows a huge amount of potential (although it’s quite buggy
at the moment). IM+Email+Docs+…stuff, all built on XMPP? I’ll take

(I’m finding it quite buggy at the moment, though).

I’m nevalic...@googlewave.com, should anybody feel the need. A search
for “with:public” is quite a good place to start for those who are new
to it.
