[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle - King Mountain

2017-11-16 Thread Brian Young via ONTBIRDS
Hello,

I was able to watch an adult Golden Eagle from our patio today, as it
soared, hawking in the wind, finally landing on an out crop at the top of
King Mountain. American Crows and Common Ravens mobbed it for over an half
hour before it few in a southern direction.

King Mountain is situated on the southern face of the Gatineau Park, and can
be viewed anywhere in the vicinity of the Mountain and Kelly Roads, in the
municipality of Chelsea, or the northern boundaries of Aylmer.

Cheers,

Brian Young

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle Cape Croker

2017-01-03 Thread Cindy Cartwright
I had an excellent experience this morning shortly after 10 am on Cape
Croker on the Bruce Peninsula.

I located a Golden Eagle sitting near the road and pulled over to admire it.
The eagle was making soft vocalizations and staring intently across the road
at the hedgerow. It flew about 100 feet away and landed in a tree just
before eleven Wild Turkey walked along the edge of the field into the
scruff.

I got out of my car to have a better view of the eagle and watched it turn
its head from side to side, even almost completely upside down twice, eyeing
up the turkeys.

Suddenly it launched out of the tree, wheeled around and dove down at the
turkeys. There was a warning shriek and a lot of crashing in the hedgerow
before the eagle flew out without a meal. It landed across the field and the
turkeys hunkered down, each trying to outwait the other.

Very exciting for all of us!

Come down 59 South through Walsingham and turn right on the 2nd. Opposite

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle Mulmur

2016-02-23 Thread Judi Parker
I was thrilled to have a very brief but close encounter with a Golden Eagle
today. I was driving westbound on the Mulmur/Nottawasaga Townline when the
eagle flew across the road about 10 metres in front of me at approximately eye
level. My first thought was juvenile bald eagle but as it flew, it caught a
beam of sunlight and the tan/gold on his head and neck was crystal clear. The
bird continued maybe a 100 metres or so and flew into some fairly dense
deciduous trees. Of course I had no camera or binocs with me. Went back a
couple hours later with binocs and saw an eagle-sized bird sitting in a tree
about where it entered the woods earlier. It did fly (but stayed in shadows so
I could not pick up any colouration) and quickly disappeared. I was not able
to lock the binocs on it. Cross roads are Mulmur Centre Line and Mulmur 2nd
Line East.

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle, adult. Minesing Wetlands CA (off George Johnston Rd)

2016-01-11 Thread fpinilla15
Birders,

I decided on a lunch drive up George Johnston Rd and then decided to walk a bit
of the Willow Creek trail. Within 2 minutes of walking I spotted a distant
buteo-like bird. I watched it climb quickly on a thermal and as it came closer
I saw it was much too broad/bulky for a buteo. Smallish head compared to Bald,
and it was all dark at a distance, once a little close there was a little bit
of lighter feathers on back of wings and still quite dark underneath.

No doubt it was an adult Golden Eagle. It headed in a WSW direction once it
got some height.

Frank

George Johnston Rd (CR28) runs north from Cty Rd 90 just west of Barrie. The
access point/trail is on George Johnston about 6-7km north of Hwy90

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle + over 100 hawks and some unusual ducks at Cranberry Marsh, 9-Oct-2014

2014-10-10 Thread Geoff Carpentier
Sixty-four species of birds were observed by myself and 5 others at
Cranberry yesterday:

Highlights include 1002 hawks, eagles, falcons, vultures and allies:

Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) 780
Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) 1 (2nd year - photographed)
Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) 13
Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus) 109
Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) 2
Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) 6 ( 4 immature, 1 @ 4th yr. subadult
and 1 adult)

Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) 19
American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) 63
Merlin (Falco columbarius) 7
small falcon sp. (Falco sp. (small falcon sp.)) 1

Additionally, 20 species of waterfowl were noted, including one Cackling
Goose, 4 Canvasbacks, 1 RN Duck and a male White-winged Scoter.
The Canvasback and scoter are rarely seen in the marsh and the high winds on
the lake may have driven them "inland". A single Horned Grebe in the marsh
was also unexpected.

Five egrets did not sport wing bands. 150 American Pipits represented a high
count - flocks moved through between 9 and 11 a.m. - estimate likely
conservative.

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle, Blue-winged Warbler, etc. - Toronto Islands

2013-05-20 Thread Norm Murr
Today Ian Cannell, Alfred Adamo and I birded the Toronto Islands and it was a
beautiful day to be down there but when is this heat going to end :>)).

We came up with 80 species of birds including 17 warbler species.

Here are some of the birds we saw – Horned Grebes, Golden Eagle, Alder
Flycatcher (calling loudly), Yellow-throated Vireo, 22 Red-eyed Vireos,
Philadelphia Vireos, Gray-cheeked Thrushes, Carolina Wren, all 6 swallow
species, Blue-winged Warbler, 19 Tennessee Warblers, Northern Parulas,
Bay-breasted Warbler, Blackpoll Warblers, Lincoln Sparrows and Orchard Orioles.

DIRECTIONS TO THE TORONTO ISLAND FERRY DOCKS

TORONTO ISLANDS - SPRING SCHEDULE NOTE – Summer Schedule starts on May
24th

Note:- Fare :- Adults $7.00 - Seniors / Students $4.50

If you are on the subway southbound get off at the TTC’s Union Subway Station,
walk south on Bay Street (on the east side of the station) for about 1 km to
the ferry docks at the foot of Bay Street at Queen’s Quay and you are there.
The entrance to the ferry docks (well signed) is on the west side of the Westin
Harbour Castle Hotel.

To get to the Toronto Islands from the TTC’s Union Subway Station on the TTC
you may transfer to the #6 or the #6A Bay St. TTC bus on Bay Street just
outside of the east entrance to the GO Station. Note:- This bus stop is
temporarily moved to the northwest side of Front St. They both go down Bay
Street to Queen’s Quay. Go passengers arriving by train or bus must pay a fare
to use the TTC bus or streetcar.

When running there is a street car (#509 Harbourfront) that goes from inside
the TTC’s Union Subway Station to Queen’s Quay (no transfer from the subway
required). Note:- This streetcar is not running for the foreseeable future
due to construction on Queens Quay.

For those who choose to head down to the docks on Sunday before the Subway
opens at 9 a.m. you can catch the #97B Yonge St. Blue Night bus (Steeles Ave.
to Queens Quay). This bus will let you off right across the street on Bay St.
only steps from the ferry docks entrance.

For ferry schedules - check -
http://www.toronto.ca/parks/island/ferry-schedule.htm

You may also want to visit the TTC web page http://www.ttc.ca/ for trip
planning assistance.

If in an auto on the Gardener Expressway or on Lakeshore Blvd, then exit at Bay
Street and drive south to Queen’s Quay, there are very few parking lots nearby
(all for a fee). One of these parking lots is located just a block north on of
the ferry docks on Bay St. with at least one more (for now) a block or so west
of the ferry docks on Queen’s Quay.

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle, Great Gray Owl, etc. in Algonquin

2013-04-06 Thread Norm Murr
Good evening.

This morning Ian Cannell and I birded Algonquin Provincial Park and though we
missed a Spruce Grouse that was reported wandering along Opeongo Road we did
okay anyway.

At approximately 6;30 am we spotted a Great Gray Owl on a hydro wire along Hwy
60 at KM 10.5 and we then headed for the Spruce Bog area where we had the first
of 4 Black-backed Woodpeckers and the first of 3 Boreal Chickadees. We also had
several Common Redpolls and a Sharp-shinned Hawk there and on the boardwalk Ian
spotted a tiny moth, our first of the season.

It was then off to Opeongo Road where we found another Black-backed Woodpecker
and 2 more Boreal Chickadees along with a few more Common Redpolls.

We then headed to the East Gate so Ian could buy a park pass and on the way we
stopped at KM 53 where Black-backed Woodpeckers had been seen earlier in the
week and we lucked into a pair of them along with a Pileated Woodpecker.

Our last stop before heading down to the Carden Alvar was the park Visitor
Centre. At the centre feeders behind the building were about 35 more Common
Redpolls and as I stood there looking at them a very noisy Common Raven flew
over heading south and it rose up and joined what I thought was another Raven
that turned out to be a juvenile Golden Eagle that slowly circled as it drifted
north overhead giving us nice views of the Golden Head as the sun shone on it.

Now it was time to head south, see my next posting.

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle near Seeley's Bay

2013-02-12 Thread Michael Runtz
This morning Rory MacKay and I observed an immature Golden Eagle on Highway
32 one km south of Highway 15. At first it was soaring high in the air,
then it went into a power dive with talons extended, eventually swooping
down into a field behind some shrubs. It apparently missed whatever it was
after and soon returned to the sky, soaring eastward and eventually out of
sight. A few minutes earlier around 20 Wild Turkeys were seen very close to
where the eagle went down; quite possibly it was after one of them.

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle - Grand Bend lagoons + OFO FT addendum

2012-10-29 Thread Maris Apse

Hi all,
I just saw a juvenile Golden Eagle flying low over the woodlots south of
GBSL as I was southbound on Mollard Line. I stopped and scoped it as it
disappeared behind the woodlot adjacent to the lagoons before emerging over #3
and continuing north, staying low so I believe it was hunting the area.
I received a note from Steve Thorpe that he and Ken Clarke had actually
observed 2 Mourning Dove nr. Tim Hortons in GB and a Sandhill Crane off Hwy #21
appropriately on the golf course south of Northville(it's called Sand Hills
G.C.). This brings our group total # to 63 for the OFO FT yesterday.
For the trip participants I have 'irrelevant' info that at my feeders this
morning I had 3 White-throated Sparrow, 2 Pine Siskin and a very bright Purple
Finch - kind of typical of a 'listing day' eh?Cheers! Maris

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle, Eastern Towhee, American Pipit etc Long Point area

2012-03-10 Thread Andrew Don
South Peel Naturalists' Club had their annual Long Point field trip today and a
great day was had by all participants.
Highlights were Juvenile Golden Eagle flying north up the causeway at Old Cut,
also Eastern Towhee singing at Old Cut and Swamp sparrow seen among the usual
chickadees, nuthatches and juncos. On the causeway Sandhill Cranes were seen as
well as 19species of ducks and Tundra Swans. 500 or so swans were sitting in a
field on the south side of Concession 1 but other than that swans were not as
plentiful as other years. Other birds seen driving around included American
Pipit, Horned Lark, Bald Eagles, Turkey Vultures and Northern Harrier. Many
thanks to Joyce LeChasseur for organizing and leading the trip

Direction from Ron Rideout's post:

Hwy 59 south from the 401 (or Hwy 24 south from the 403 to Hwy 59 and then
south) to the shore of Lake Erie. Travel past the flashing yellow light at the
intersection of Front Rd. (into Port Rowan) and continue south to Lake Erie.
Upon driving down onto the causeway, you enter the Big Creek NWA (marsh on both
sides). Front Road going west is Lakeshore Road and the fields along here can
be quite good.

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle Near Havelock

2012-02-17 Thread Marg and Ian Sturdee
It was a surprise to see a juvenile Golden Eagle north-east of Havelock. It
showed white patches on both upper and lower wings, although the lower wing
patches were smaller than shown in Sibley's Guide to Birds. It had a white
tail, with a wide dark band at the tip, and dark undertail coverts. It was
harrassed by 2 American Crows which helped to confirm its size. I had many
looks as it flew back and forth near the road.

It was overcast, so there was no chance to see the colour of the nape.
When it glided its wings were in a slight dihedral.

Directions from Peterborough: Havelock is about 40km east of Peterborough on
Highway 7. At the east en.d of Havelock there is a flashing light at Mary

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle, NW of Strathroy, January 4th

2012-01-04 Thread Ken Burrell

Hey Birders,

I had some work in the Strathroy area today. While working, I had a number of
interesting sightings. Most exciting was a Golden Eagle which appeared to be
hunting, near the intersection of Sylvan and Elm Tree Road's. It was observed
heading west, not too high up.

Other interesting sightings in this area included:
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 bird perched along Hwy. 402 at km marker 78
Bald Eagle - 1 adult
Northern Harrier - 1
American Kestrel - 3
Red-tailed Hawk - 12
Rough-legged Hawk - 11 (all light morph's)
Ring-necked Pheasant - 1
Great Black-backed Gull - 1 adult in field at Hwy. 402 and Kerwood Road
Brown-headed Cowbird - flock of ~50
Northern Shrike - 4

The location of the GOEA is best gotten to, by exiting Hwy. 402 at Kerwood
Road. Take Kerwood north to Elm Tree, turn left. Heading west on Elm Tree,
Sylvan Road is 2/3 roads west of here. The Golden could be anywhere in the area.

For some distant and poor quality pics of the Eagle's check my blog out.

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle, Bowmanville, Snowy Owl, Whitby

2011-12-02 Thread Jim Yaki
Hi All

As of 12 noon today the snowy owl at Whitby Harbour was still present on the
rock wall on the south west part of the harbour, near the small green and white
lighthouse looking thing(not the red and white lighthouse at the lake end of
the groin)

Also at 3:15 today a Golden Eagle migrated over my house in north Bowmanville,
near the corner of Liberty and Concession 3. It is probably west of Toronto by
now.

Directions to the Owl

Exit the 401 at Brock St. in Whitby. Turn south on Brock and continue south
across the small bridge with water to the east and west. At the next point
where Brock St. is right beside the water you should be able to see the "green
and white lighthouse" to the south west. The owl was on the rocks very near to
the light. There is parking a couple of hundred ft. farther along on the right.

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle at Long Point

2011-04-03 Thread Paul FJ. Eagles
On Saturday April 2 I spent much of the day in the Long Point area.

Attached is a few of the better sightings.

1) There was an immature Golden Eagle moving along the forest edge of the Big
Creek National Wildlife Area. It could be observed from the top of the sand
dunes at the end of Hastings Drive. I had a good look at a 1.5 km with a 60X
Leica scope. The partial white tail was easily observable. Interestingly the
bird has a whitish wash over its wings while sitting. This is only shown well
in the Sibley Guide. Also the lighter feathers on the crown give the bird a
light-capped impression when observed at distance.

2) There was a Bald Eagle adult in the same general area as the other Eagle.

3) The Blue-winged Teals were back.

4) The Sandhill Cranes appeared to down to only the local nesting pairs. But
these birds were active and highly visible as they made big sweeping flights
over the Big Creek Marsh.

5) At Lee Brown's Pond there were 8 White-fronted Geese resting with many
Canada Geese. About 10 AM they left the pond and moved into Big Creek Marsh
with about 100 Canadas.

6) I found a Ruddy Duck in the main marshes.

7) There were a few Tundra Swans in the Inner Bay. I saw about 50. It is
interesting to see them still around in April.

8) Both Common and Red-breasted Merganser were found Lake Erie.

9) There were masses of Redheads on the Inner Bay. They were accompanied by
thousands of Baldpate, plus both Scaup species and many Canvasback.

Today went down to the Long Point area with Margaret Bain, Paul Riss and
Richard Pope and unsuccessfully looked for the Greater White-fronted Geese
reported earlier in the week.As a consolation we did see a juvenile Golden

seen was a Hoary Redpoll in with Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins along
Hastings Drive. Other birds of note include Rusty Blackbirds, Sandhill Cranes,
Tundra swans flying everywhere and a Winter Wren and Eastern Meadowlark at Old
Cut station.

To get there take highway 59 to Long Point and turn right onto Lakeshore

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle at Turkey Point marsh, 2 March 2011

2011-03-02 Thread Gregor Beck
A first year Golden Eagle was observed hunting over the Turkey Point marsh
between 10:40 and 11:00am this morning, 2 March 2011. The bird was spotted
by Kevin Kavanagh at 10:40am and we continued to observe it for about 20
minutes. The eagle appears to be actively hunting, sometimes flying low over
frozen ponds, landing briefly, then flying high over the western tip of
Turkey Point. The typical juvenile pattern with white in wings and at base
of tail is clearly seen, as is a bit of the golden wash. (Note: there is
also at least one dark-phased Rough-legged Hawk hunting the marsh this
morning for contrast and comparison.) We observed the Golden Eagle from 1634
Front Road, but if it remains in the area it should be visible from the
public roadside lookout a few hundred metres to the west of that address.

For Tundra Swan watchers, we have also observed the arrival of numerous
flocks this morning and in recent days. The inner bay of Long Point remains
largely ice-covered, but the strong north-westerly wind this morning has
cleared the outer bay of most ice. Ice cover may change rapidly today so
waterfowl numbers could increase as a result.

Directions: Follow Highway 24 south and then west from Simcoe. Turn south
onto Turkey Point Road (Reg. Rd 10). Turn west onto Front Road. The Turkey
Point marsh roadside lookout is approximately 2.5km west of Turkey Point
Road on Front Road.

While photographing Redpolls and Goldfinches in my yard in Orleans ( Eastern

soaring high up. I turned my lens in its direction and it continued to come
closer ...a Juvenile Golden Eagle . Quite a surprise on this freezing cold day.
I managed several photos and then lost sight of the bird when I fumbled for an
extender in my coat pocket to bring the bird in closer. I think it flew west of
my position because a few minutes later 6 crows were hurrying in that direction
with a few others heading that way moments later. For those familiar with
Orleans it looked like the bird was looking down on the lands behind the
Walmart on Innes and Belcourt ( behind the woods and the water tower)

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle - Royal Botanical Gardens, Hamilton

2009-11-01 Thread Kevin Kerr
Hello Ontbirders,

Evan Timusk and I birded the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton early
this afternoon. The highlight of the outing was an immature GOLDEN
EAGLE that was spotted soaring over the trail to Bull’s Point
traveling southwest. The other notable raptor sighting was an adult
male MERLIN, which put on a show by picking off a Cedar Waxwing in
front of the Nature Interpretive Centre.

Other sightings included the area’s more usual fare of Red-bellied
Woodpecker, Carolina Wren, and Purple Finch. Cootes Paradise was
filled with Green-winged Teal and Northern Shoveler.

Good birding,

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle, Brant - Constance Bay near Ottawa

2009-11-01 Thread Jeff Skevington
There appears to be a good migration going on along the Ottawa River today. We
are stuck in the yard doing yard work, but nonetheless managed to see a flock
of 400 Brant and a subadult Golden Eagle go over. There was an albino Brant in
the flock with the others.

Constance Bay is west of Ottawa. Take the March Road exit from Hwy 417 in
Kanata. Turn off onto Dunrobin Road. Take this to Constance Bay Drive. Follow
this to the river and start birding.

Good birding,

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle over Brighton

2009-04-16 Thread Doug McRae

Hi Ontbirders,

I saw an adult Golden Eagle flying east, low over my yard at the north
end of Brighton this morning, at about 930 a.m. While I get an east

frequent or directionally focused. This is my first spring Golden in
14 years of living here.

Cheers,

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle Follow-up

2009-03-29 Thread Mark Haw
On Saturday I was in the same spot where I had seen the (possible) Golden Eagle
on Friday. This time I saw what I assume was the same bird, perched, with it's
back to me. When I saw it Friday I could see that it had a dark brown head and
chest, with what I can only describe as gold highlights. From the back, the
bird was this same colour all over. This time I saw the bird fly. I could see
that it had white under it's wings and tail. It's wingtips turned up as it
soared and it remained aloft for the entire time I watched it. Just passing
along more detail because from the second sighting this still doesn't look to
me like an immature Bald Eagle. (I've seen immature Bald Eagles and the head
and beak of this bird appeared much smaller)

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle, Shallow Lake, Grey County March 17th

2009-03-17 Thread Jerry Walsh

At about 315 this afternoon we had outstanding looks at an immature Golden
Eagle near Shallow Lake. The bird was first observed perched in a tree near the
roadside and we were able to approach in a car to about 30 yards distance
before the bird took flight and flew low to the east. It was exciting to see
the 'field marks' at close range, rather than high overhead as we usually see
them in migration. Quite an unexpected discovery, and, I think, my first-ever
March Golden Eagle in Ontario.

A few other raptors were sighted, including one Red-shouldered Hawk and a few
Red-tailed Hawks, but no Turkey Vultures at all.

To reach the location where we saw the Golden Eagle travel north from Owen
Sound on Hwy 6 to Shallow Lake. Just after descending the small hill into
Shallow Lake turn right on to Cruickshank Street. This becomes Grey Road 170.
Driving along here you will see a large, mostly ice-covered, wetland on your
right. We saw the eagle on the left side of the road about 1/2 km beyond this
point and just before McNab Lake Conservation Area.

[Ontbirds] GOLDEN EAGLE, GOSHAWK among 73 raptors at Cranberry--Nov.2/08

Weather conditions-- medium NNE wind(becoming E by mid-day), rising/then
falling BP, TUV=2, 4C; 5% cloud-cover

The north-easterly winds carried most of the migrating hawks directly north off
Thickson Pt., hence at considerable distance from our platform. The keen eyes
of Brian, Rayfield and Stuart were major contributing factors to seeing a good
number of Red-tailed Hawks (see table below). We were happy to have Frank and
his crew from Rosetta McClain to help us. It was cold and blustery at times.

At 1110 a wonderful grey ghost spectacle came rapidly very low right across the
wetland, through our perched owl, and on westward. Many photos were taken of
this immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK.
After many people had left a wide wingspanned raptor appeared over the north
edge of the wetland--I do not recall any flapping as this adult GOLDEN EAGLE
moved through.
At 0915 an adult PEREGRINE FALCON (a resident) perched in a willow tree.

Among non-raptors--pine siskins, both kinglets, yellow-rumped warbler.

[Ontbirds]Golden Eagle south of Cambridge

2007-10-21 Thread Mark Cranford

Posting for the Burrells

This afternoon about 4:30 Jim and Kenny Burrell had a juvenile Golden
Eagle flying west over Bannister Lake, south of Cambridge. The bird
flew west flushing 12 Sandhill Cranes and the local Trumpeter Swans.
Shortly afterwards an adult Bald Eagle was seen flying east.

This morning at about 11:30 Nigel Shaw and myself observed a Sub-adult Golden

direction and proceded to Glide and Circle in a South Westerly direction. We
lost site of it as it probably reached the Intersection of Hwy 11 and Hwy 89.
This is the 2nd GOEA observed by myself in Innisfil in the last 3 years.

We were near the Intersection of the 2nd Line of Innisfil and the 20th

[Ontbirds]Golden Eagle near Grand Valley

2006-11-22 Thread brett woodman
Unfortunately this post is for yesterday. For some reason my email was not
letting me deliver message yesterday and this is the first chance I have had to
get it out today.

The highlight of my afternoon (yesterday) was observing a first year Golden
Eagle flying west. The bird was first seen around 1:10 p.m. west of Highway 25
on Concession 12-13 (just south of Highway 89). I followed it south and west a
number of concession blocks were it perched in a maple about 200m west of the
road and afforded me nice looks in the scope. After about 5 min it took off
and continued flying southwest.

Of interest, to me at any rate, is the fact that I saw a Golden Eagle about
10-15 m south of here last Oct 27, 2005 while visiting another job site in this
vicinity. These are the only Goldens I have seen in Ontario.

The Black Guillemot in Massey west of Sudbury was last seen on
Tuesday morning, 21 November, about 8 a.m. by Erwin Meissner. When
Erwin saw the guillemot it was flying upriver about 6 km from the
bridge in Massey, where it was seen by about 100 people on Saturday
and Sunday. As the guillemot flew by a perched adult Bald Eagle, the
eagle stooped and in two flaps was close behind it with its legs
extended. Erwin didn't see the outcome. About 10 birders, including
us, searched the river yesterday, but we could not relocate the Black
Guillemot. Today (Wednesday afternoon) Erwin had not seen it as of
3:15 p.m. For current information, please phone Erwin at 705-865-1970.

Age and Plumage: In Monday's post, we incorrectly aged it as a winter
adult in definitive basic plumage. However, it is a young bird in
juvenile/first basic (first year) plumage. We have since examined
four excellent photos taken by Joe Houle which show dark mottling and
barring on the mostly white wing coverts, which we did not see in the
field. Adults have pure white wing coverts. Also, its leg colour is
orangish (brighter red in adults) indicating a yearling bird. First
year birds are more likely to wander than adults. See photos
http://www.jeaniron.ca/2006/BlackGuillemot1.htm

Subspecies: We are tentatively identifying it as the Eastern Arctic
subspecies 'Cepphus grylle ultimus' rather than the Atlantic
subspecies 'C.g. atlantis' because of its extreme whiteness. The big
Sibley Guide (2000) on page 245 shows a comparison between Arctic and
Atlantic birds. The Massey bird agrees more closely with the whiter
northern birds. The subspecies 'ultimus' is most likely in Massey
because it breeds south to James Bay (Godfrey 1986, The Birds of
Canada). Ross James (1991, Annotated Checklist of the Birds of
Ontario, ROM) assigned the Toronto specimens to 'C.g. ultimus'. See
photos showing overall whiteness of this individual
http://www.jeaniron.ca/2006/BlackGuillemot1.htm

Previous Inland Ontario Records: There are two specimen records for
Toronto and two sight reports for Kingston. There is an old report
for Hamilton which was accepted by Bob Curry (2006) in the recently
published "Birds of Hamilton and surrounding areas." Black Guillemots
seen on Lake Ontario could originate from either Hudson Bay and James
Bay or from the St. Lawrence River estuary where they also breed.
Although not an inland report, Doug McRae and Alan Wormington saw one
or two birds on five days between 23 October and 14 November 1981 at
Netitishi Point (not far from Moosonee) on southern James Bay (Speirs
1985, Birds of Ontario).

Breeding Record: No breeding evidence was found during the two
Ontario Breeding Bird Atlases. There is very little suitable rocky
coastal nesting habitat in Ontario. The only breeding record for
Ontario was on the Hudson Bay coast published by Harry Lumsden (1959)
in the Canadian Field-Naturalist 73(1):53-55. However, it b

2006-10-31 Thread Lloyd Paul
Birders:
I was out birding in Prince Edward County near Belleville on Monday, October
30th. I had an excellent view of a juvenile golden eagle flying over Picton.
A very disturbing experience happened when I was birding along the shores of
Lake Ontario at Sandbanks Provincial Park. Along a half kilometre stretch of
what is called "Campers Beach", going south along the shore from the Outlet
River, I counted 51 dead common loons.
They did not appear bloated. There was blood coming from the mouths of many of
them.
I reported it to the staff at Sandbanks and they may send some to Guelph for
testing. They suggested it could be bocilism. If anyone reading this can help
me understand what may have caused this I would much appreciate it if you would
email me privately at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Directions to Picton: 401 to Belleville South on 62 to Hwy.33 and along that

[Ontbirds]Golden Eagle-Elgin County

2006-01-13 Thread Melisse D.
I observed an adult golden eagle at 8:15 am on Jan. 13, 2006 on Fingal Line in
Elgin County. It was observed at very close range.

The bird was feeding on a road-kill raccoon in the middle of the road
immediately adjacent to the Talbot Estate property. Due to the hilly road, I
was only 40 feet away when I spotted it and immediately pulled to the side of
the road. It continued feeding for a few moments before being frightened off
by a passing car. It flew a short distance and perched in tree in the ravine.
I left the area in the hopes it would return to its breakfast.

This is a relatively quiet road and the bird may still be in the area
provided road crews have not removed the racoon.

Excuse my hyperbole, but this is my first close-up encounter with this
species and I am still in awe. It was an absolutely magnificent bird! An
auspicious beginning to Friday the 13th!!

  Melisse DeDobbeleer

Directions: From the 401, take Iona Road south to Fingal Line. Turn right
on Fingal Line and proceed approximately 5 county roads south west. You will
encounter a deep ravine with the Talbot Estate property on the opposite side.
The racoon is on the road.

The Ivory Gull was found at Wheatley Harbour this morning. It had
apparently been there all night, as it was initially found by a birder
from New York at daybreak. I got there shortly after 8:00 a.m., along
with birders from the greater Detroit area and one from Tucson, Arizona.

The bird was sitting on the sand about 15 metres from the shoreline and
probably 20 metres or so east of the easternmost break wall to the
Wheatley Harbour. It remained there until at least 9:15 a.m. when I
left.

Directions:
>From the west: from Windsor take Hwy 3 east past Leamington and when it
ends at County Rd 34 (Talbot Trail) continue east on Talbot Trail to
Wheatley.=20
>From the east: from Hwy 401 get off at exit 63 and follow Queen's Line
(Chatham-Kent Rd 2) west to Tilbury. At the intersection of Queen's
Line/Mill Street East and Queen Street (Chatham-Kent Rd 1) in Tilbury
turn south on Queen Street to Wheatley.=20

>From the main intersection at the traffic light in the town of Wheatley
take Erie Street (Chatham-Kent Rd 1) south and follow it straight to the
lake. Park at the end of the road in the parking area on the left and
carefully walk over the sand and rocks to the beach.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds]Golden Eagle near Thornbury

2005-12-15 Thread matthew.graham
Yesterday Dec. 14 while driving on coutny rd 13. just north of the village of
Kimberly, I saw a large black bird being harassed by a crow. The crow was
dwarfed by this other bird so I got out of my truck and found the bird in
question was an immature Golden Eagle! The crow left and the eagle banked and
turned our way and flew right over us, giving a great look, back dropped
against a clear blue sky.

Kimberly is on county road 13 about 25 km south of hwy. 26 at Thornbury (which
is about half way between Collingwood and Meaford). The bird was seen just
north of Beaver Valley ski club.

I have seen reports that the Black-tailed Gull has been seen numerous
times yesterday, Oct. 19, and all morning to-day the 20th, in Charlotte,
Vermont..

For directions, see the notes below.

=46rom Matthew Medler :

=ABThe following is a link to a "big picture" map of the Burlington area,=

with the village of Charlotte marked with a red star:

ory=3D&searchtab=3Dhome&address=3D&city=3Dcharlotte&state=3Dvt&zipcode

Zooming in two levels provides the detail necessary to follow roads to
the town beach. From the red star, go west a short distance on Ferry
Road until the intersection with Lake Road. Turn right (go north) on
Lake Road and follow it until you come to a 25 mph zone and then go
under a covered bridge. The parking lot for the town beach is on your
right almost immediately after coming out of the covered bridge.=BB

=46rom the message of Martin Bowman :

=ABIf you go and can't find the bird at the suggested spot, go further
along
the road and take the first left. On your left at some distance is a
house under construction on the shore. Ask the workmen if you can go to
the
shore; they certainly agreed today. It was there we had the bird in
flight.

If you do decide to go, I suggest going down the New York side of Lake
Champlain and taking the ferry from Essex to Charlotte. This avoids
difficult roads north of Philipsburg, QC, and construction in Shelburne,

VT. Ferry cost about $12 USD one way . . . don't know about return
fares.=BB

[Ontbirds]Golden eagle, Brewer's blackbird, Bruce P.

2005-04-11 Thread Paul Kron
On Saturday, April 9 at approx. 2:00, an immature golden eagle was
flying high, north to south along the Georgian Bay shoreline of the
Bruce Peninsula, at the Stormhaven camping area south of Cyprus Lake P.
Park.

On Sunday, April 10, at least one male Brewer's blackbird was singing
from a fence post along Hwy. 6 north of Wiarton, also on the Bruce
Peninsula.

Directions: Travel north on Hwy 6 to the Bruce Peninsula. Brewer's
blackbirds: Approx. 23 km north of Wiarton, along Hwy 6, there is a
long stretch of road with open pastures on both sides and numerous

[Ontbirds]Golden Eagle; Cackling Goose @ Long Point.

2005-03-18 Thread smacke03
Fellow Birders,

This afternoon, an adult Golden Eagle was sitting in the field adjacent to the
corner of the East Quarter Line Rd. and Concession A., just west of Port Rowan,
probably investigating some carrion. 5 Turkey Vultures were also in the area.
Earlier that day an adult Bald Eagle was in the same field.

Last night, (March 17) a Cackling Goose was observed at the Bird Studies Canada
headquarters. There are a large number of Geese around so it's worth giving
them a second look.

Although Tundra Swans do not appear to be at their peak, highest counts in the
past few days have been anywhere from 5000 to 7000, mostly on Big Creek and in
the surrounding corn and soy bean fields. The mouth of Big Creek has also been
quite productive for waterfowl, mostly Canvasbacks and Redheads.

For more details on the current bird activity at Long Point or a number of other
bird observatories across Canada, check out the Canadian Migration Monitoring
Network Sightings Board at http://www.bsc-eoc.org/national/cmmnsightings.html

Ian Cannell and I did a full day of birding today, starting at Fisher's Glen on
Lake Erie, crossing westward to Long Point, doubling back to Fisherville later
on, then eventually heading north to Newmarket. The overlap between
early-arriving migrants from the south and late-lingering visitors from the
north allowed for sightings of a wide range of bird species.
.
Interesting spring arrivals along the Lake Erie shore included:

Fisher's Glen - KILLDEER (2), RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (3), WILD TURKEY (9),
HORNED LARK (6), plus numerous Grackles, Brown-headed Cowbirds, and Red-winged
Blackbirds (by day's end we had seen literally hundreds of the three latter
species, especially RWBB).

Turkey Point to Long Point - SANDHILL CRANE (4), BALD EAGLE (1), RING-NECKED
PHEASANT (1 male), TUNDRA SWAN (7000... they just kept coming in!), NORTHERN
PINTAIL (25), REDHEAD (100+), CANVASBACK (100+), NORTHERN HARRIER (2). At Big
Creek on both sides of the Long Point causeway the water was open, so many
waterfowl were concentrated in that area, allowing for very good

[Ontbirds]Golden Eagle west of Newmarket

2005-03-15 Thread RON FLEMING
Searching for my first Red-winged Blackbird of the spring this morning, I was
certainly not thinking about eagles. When an anomalous-looking raptor (i.e.
not one of the many local Red-tailed Hawks I have seen) appeared in the sky
circling high over a woodlot on the east side of Keele Street at 9:40, I pulled
over to take a look in case it turned out to be a Northern Goshawk or
Red-shouldered Hawk doing a display flight over local territory (like many
birders over the past four years, I have become conditioned to default into
atlassing mode).

Even after I got my binoculars on the bird I was not thinking about eagles.
From a distance, the bird appeared to be a dark buteo. It clearly showed a
dark "vest" and a dark terminal band on its two-toned tail, so I began to think
that it was a dark adult Rough-legged Hawk. As the bird slowly descended from
the thermal it was riding and, in the process, flew closer to where I was
standing, I began to re-evaluate this identification because the bird looked
very large. Still, I had to remind myself, it is easy to misjudge a bird's
size in the sky when there are no other birds to compare it to.

Other anomalies presented themselves, however: for one thing, the contrast
between the vest and tail were obvious in the clear sunlight, BUT it was not
the bold black-and-white contrast that shows up on a Rough-legged Hawk. Also,
there seemed to be a shiny part on the head, which at first puzzled me (insert
"duh"). When the bird finally started to flap its way back up to a higher
altitude, the wingbeats were slow and the wingtips bent upward, suggesting a
larger, longer wing surface and a different "gestalt" altogether than a
Rough-legged Hawk.

It finally hit me as I watched it climb: I was looking at an adult Golden
Eagle! The "shiny part on the head" was its golden nape and - yes - the bird
was indeed very large! It flew with a slight dihedral when it was not
flapping. I watched it slowly moving north-northwest over the Holland Marsh
area until it was lost from view. This is only the fourth Golden Eagle I have
observed in York Region in the past twenty years. I imagine there are more
sightings than that in this area, but it is not a species that is observed
often in this area.

I still haven't found my first Red-winged Blackbird of the spring, even though
they have been seen both north of me (in Keswick) and south of me (in
Concorde). But I shouldn't complain.

Of additional interest today was a displaying male Cooper's Hawk crossing
Bathurst Avenue just south of Mulock Road in southwest Newmarket at 10:00 a.m..
The white, flared-up undertail coverts used in accipter displays puzzled me
for years until several contributors to this website informed me that what I
was seeing was not so much an odd field mark, but a behaviour linked to
courtship. This flaring up of the undertail coverts can create a white-rumped
appearance to some accipters, sometimes leading to misidentifications of these
slim hawks as harriers.

Ron Fleming, Newmarket

DIRECTIONS: Although the eagle is likely many miles north of Newmarket by now,
it was seen just north of Highway 9 on Keele Avenue, near where the Cardinal
Golf Course maintenace road meets Keele. this is just a few kms east of Hwy.
400. The Cooper's Hawk
mentioned above is, I suspect, one of a pair of local Cooper's that patrols the
vicinity of Bathurst and Mulock in the southwest part of Newmarket. I am
guessing, but I believe they nest in the woodlot along Old Bathurst, or in the
much larger woods that is part of the Joker's Hill property on the west side of
Bathurst.

[Ontbirds]Golden Eagle - High Park - Sat Oct 16

2004-10-17 Thread Frank Pinilla
On Saturday at 1:30pm I watched as an immature Golden Eagle circled over High
Park's "Hawk Hill" in intermittent heavy rain. When I first arrived there were
2 people standing at the hawkwatch station, by the time I walked up there was
nobody around, nothing else of note was seen in the 30 minutes I was there.

Good birding,

High Park's "Hawk Hill" is located at the north side of the Grenadier
Restaurant Parking lot. The entrance to High Park is located south off Bloor
Street just west of Keele/Parkside, in Toronto.

[Ontbirds] Golden Eagle (Chaffeys Locks), Orange-crowned Warbler (Ottawa)

2004-05-02 Thread Jeff Skevington
Hello Ontbirders,

On Saturday, May 1st, Angela and I saw an immature
Golden Eagle near Chaffeys Locks (flying over the
entrance to the rail trail a few km west of Queens
Biological Station on Opinicon Road). Other birds in
the area were all as expected (lots of Red-shouldered
Hawks, both species of waterthrush, gnatcatchers,
Yellow-throated Vireos, etc.).

Today, we saw an Orange-crowned Warbler at Britannia
(Mud Lake) in Ottawa. The only other birds of note
seen were 2 Northern Parulas. Britannia is along the
river, north of the intersection of Carling and
Richmond Roads in western Ottawa.

Hi Birders,
Of special note today, Jim Burk and I found a male SUMMER TANAGER on
Spicebush Trail this Sunday morning. It was about a 10 minute walk from
the parking lot.
Warblers were hard to find, and were in small fast moving flocks. Of note,
we found Bluewinged and Hooded Bennett Ave. Also 2 Bluewinged were near
the old Pony Barn (north end of Harrison Trail), as well as a White-eyed
Vireo.
Other things were seen and I'm sure they well appear in the daily report.
