I installed a demo of "system access" today and it is really good.
i would not say its awesome because there are a lot of things that could be
done better.
but it is really good!

yes they have a video on their website with a demo. it can launch outlook
internet explorer etc from voice command. looks very nice. they just need
to add a good screen reader to the internet explorer part to make it more
complete... and add access to some specific websites like facebook etc.

2011-03-21 Thread John Justice
Brad, take my word for it, it isn't anywhere near as good as they'd like to
think it is.
Oh, don't get me wrong. It's a great program but it's difficult to use and
because of that, it can be frustrating.
I'll bet there's someone on this list who can make it jump through hoops but
I have tried at work and we've finally decided to shelve the idea for the
time being.
I suppose it's what you need from a program that makes the difference,
though.
The great thing about that company is that they've always tried to improve
their product. In another couple of years, it will probably be everything
we want it to be. The thing is, Dragon naturally Speaking is not written
with a blind user in mind. That makes it a bit tough to navigate.

dragon naturally speaking premium can open some programs via voice command
then type etc. so all they need to do is program some of the major sites
into that same technology.

Many of the problems around this technology is the complexity of the
vocabulary desired. The less commands you want to recognize, the better
the accuracy. From a practical standpoint I always had problems with
Dragon while taking dictation or recognizing commands and controlling
the computer because of family interruptions or background noise. It
can give you strange results and take longer due to undoing and
editing! It was kind of cool, but very frustrating!

Recently, several mainstream devices have come closer to your ideals.
There is the Ford in car electronics which uses voice control of the
audio, temperature read email from your bluetooth phone, or send a text
message through your phone, and so on for a hands free experience. It
sounds pretty imprressive! It almost makes me want to drive. It is
even in their low end Focus cars. Smart phones are surprisingly getting
pretty good at this as well I hear. Google has many projects that allow
voice input and recognition for search and translating voice mails to
text emails on Android phones. Most of the heavy processing in these
cases is performed on their servers.

Re: [Blind-Computing] new to blind computing and searching

2011-03-20 Thread john justice
Your question brings up a load of questions, Kenny.
What exactly do you mean by a "voice controlled " computer?
Although some computer programs promise to be able to allow the user to
perform certain functions by using the spoken word, The reality is,
unfortunately, nowhere near what the designers promise. Some success has
been achieved by the use of programs like Dragon Naturally Speaking but
even there, there are limitations, confusion and serious frustration. The
days of computers which respond directly to the spoken word are coming but
they're not here, yet.

You seem to be of the opinion that blind people need a "voice activated
computer" in order to function. In a recent survey, 99.18% of the blind
use standard computers which have been equipped with screen readers. I
agree with you that to a novice, most screen readers are cumbersome and
difficult to learn. But the world makes no promise of fairness or equality
to the blind. At worst, we are tolerated. At best, you may find many types
of adaptive equipment which will help you as a blind person. If you can be
more specific as to what you are trying to accomplish, there are many people
on this list with vast experience and knowledge that they are willing to
share. Please provide specific questions so that we can give you specific
responses.

Re: [Blind-Computing] new to blind computing and searching

2011-03-19 Thread Dan Rossi

Kenny,

Ah, I see. What you are looking for is an artificial intelligence. They
don't exist yet. Although, Watson made it look pretty real.

Just because a computer can turn your speech into machine readable text,
doesn't mean it understands what you are saying.

If you wanted to tell your computer "go to facebook", "update my status",
then someone would have had to program all the commands that it requires
to do those things, then program the speech recognition system to execute
those commands when it receives your commands.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but for that system to work for more than
a couple of web sites, or a few dozen commands, it would be pretty
complex.

Sorry, but computers just aren't quite that smart yet.

Re: [Blind-Computing] new to blind computing and searching

2011-03-19 Thread Mich

Hello kenny
to my knollige there is no such thing as a voice activated computer if you
mien a computer that is able to be activated by your voice and is usable for
blind people. how ever there are several programs that make using the
computer easier for the blind these are screen readers and the most popular
screen readers are jaws for windows and window eyes. there are also a few
open source screen readers like nvda and system access. I hope this helps.
from Mich.

Actually if used correctly they can be quite helpful. When I use jfw at
least you can go by headings or tab through links. You can also go to edit
fields or just do a text search. There are many ways to speed up internet
browsing.

thanks for the reply and the info! i saw something by dragon naturally
speaking that was sort of voice controlled. if you said "write email" it
would open a new email. all those screen readers leave a lot to be desired
when it comes to surfing the internet. you have to go through all the links
at the top of the page to get to the content... thanks again for your time!

right it needs to a combination of voice input from the user, and digital
voice output from the computer. so you can say "use facebook" then say
"update status" then just say what you want your status to be. i am very
surprised that there is not already a system like this. thanks for your
time.

Re: [Blind-Computing] new to blind computing and searching

2011-03-19 Thread Dan Rossi
Since most blind people have fingers, voice input isn't really necessary.
Voice input is more for people who have paralysis or issues with
dexterity.

As far as screen readers being clunky, this is true for some situations,
but notthe for the one you mentioned, having to navigate through all the
links at the top of a page. Most screen readers have many navigation
functions that allow you to quickly and easily navigate a page, including
jumping over that first, usually a frame, to get to the body of the page.

A voice input system won't change that for you. You will still need a
screen reader to get information out of the system. Speech to text is
merely for putting information into the system. So, you would still have
to learn to navigate a web page even if you were using a voice input
system.

2011-03-19 Thread Jacob Kruger
Not quite since we use a lot of hotkeys to quickly navigate to relevant
content etc., and here's a link to jaws' own bit of tutorial material
relating to using the 'net :

http://www.freedomscientific.com/training/Surfs-Up/_Surfs_Up_Start_Here.htm

While some guys do use things like dragon naturally speaking, I think most
of us just touch type as such, but anyway...and there are free typing
tutorial bits of software out there that include their own spoken/audio
prompts.

Stay well

it really isn't voice controlled. It is speech output grin. There are a few
and it really is a personal and financial choice. There is jaws by fs or
freedom scientific or window eyes by gw micro. These are the two big one.
There is also system access to go and NVDA.
