[Callers] woodrow wilson

absolutely excellent article; thanks Michael. I was, in a past life, a
"Woodrow Wilson fellow" at Princeton and never knew this but I surely agree
with the articles conclusion (and its relevance to the gypsy discussion)

Yes Lissa, that's sad. I get the impression the the majority of dancers here in
the backwards southwestern states (dancers of many colors and persuasions, the
potential 'offenders and offendees') have been oblivious to these things as
well but everyone seems to be having fun together just enjoying the dance for
all it is.

Thank you for the clarification from the Voice of Roma.
Having learned the dance move and the term, and used it in complete ignorant
innocence, I feel sad that it's leaving.

But I'm sentimental about the Confederate flag, too and sad that my high
school's arch-rival will no longer be Robert E Lee High School. I've just been
living my life in a pool of ignorance and not realizing I'm offending people
right and left.

[Callers] Sticky floors

2015-07-20 Thread jean francis via Callers
another option is to buy shuffleboard wax (ebay or large janitorial supplies)
aka ballroom wax. This is a fine powdered wax that comes in various
"slipperiness" grades...a tiny bit of a moderate slipperiness goes a very very
long way. A container the size of a kitchen cleanser 'can' could last an entire
dance community a year. Since it is a wax, I imagine it is good for wood
floors, however the venue must be consulted and there is some danger from
exuberant use such that folks could end up horizontal. Sprinkling it evenly
around the floor and then sweeping it off before the dance will generally leave
a beneficial amount.
Alternate solutions might be to offer a 'step in' tray of it, where those who
found the floor too sticky might smoosh their shoes in it briefly or a bottle
could be passed around so dancers could put a pinch in their palms and rub it
on the bottom of their dance shoes from time to time. I suspect this works best
on smooth soles (suede, leather, composite) and not so well on 'tread' soles
like athletic shoes. I carry a small plastic bottle of this to all dance events
to rub on my own shoe soles.

[Callers] Lost a posting, please help

2015-05-19 Thread jean francis via Callers
I thought I'd saved a fairly recent discussion on 'transgressive
contras'...there was one posting that had a link to a video of 2 contra lines
where the 1's bounced back and forth from line to line in subsequent verses.
Could some kind soul who did save that please email me the link and any
relevant discussion they saved at catherinea...@yahoo.com. Sadly I do not know
how to access any archives...tried googling 'transgressive contra shared
weight' and just brought up a long discussion from 2006
Many thanks!
