well, I think "messed up" is too strong. when viewing it in muytt,
it's all indented the same, and the "> " markers mutt put in the
previous mails are all gone.

I hate stupid email tools that don't follow net conventions.

my guess is that it depends on which ISO image you used.

I iinstalled a non-productized version from a DVD that installed Gnome,
then I added the epel repo and installed Mate which then was made the
default desktop.

As an aside, I'm wondering if you removed all the "quote" marks in my
first reply (the "> " starting each line). Replies without such quote
marks are awfully hard for others to read...

I iinstalled a non-productized version from a DVD that installed Gnome,
then I added the epel repo and installed Mate which then was made the
default desktop.

available for Gnome is that Gnome already has compositing stuff built in.
But I could be wrong about thatl.

I noticed that too.  When I installed centos 7 the second time, I noticed a kde 
desktop and a gnome desktop in the offering.  If you don't select either (my 
first try before selecting kde), what desktop is installed?

The compiz project is run by Canonical now, and is not seen very much
outside of Ubuntu. Whether that is for technical or licensing or
political reasons I do not know.

For KDE 4 users, the native window manager has many features found in
compiz. GNOME 3 has a compositing window manager built into the
shell(!), so compiz wouldn't work with it anyway,

It seems to be a centos 7.1 “no support” thing.  I installed 6.3 (did updates 
and it took me to 6.6) and did yum install compiz after installing epel repo 
support and it found it within centos 6.6.
