RE: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I ""Upgrade"" to something else?
My biggest issue with DW is that it uses it's own HTTP system instead of relying on the OS, like Homesite+ does. This causes major issues with internet proxies that require authentication. There is nowhere to set a username/password for http. This effectively renders RDP dead for me. ..02 Jeff -Original Message- From: James Holmes [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, March 09, 2006 6:52 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I ""Upgrade"" to something else? Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
I am a Window's user and I use Sapien's PrimalScript, and have been since I stopped using HomeSite+ over a year ago. I also have CFE and DW8. Currently I am switching back and forth between CFE and PS on different projects, and I like alot about CFE (great job guys). But I still find myself coming back to PS. It is just lighter and quicker. Great snippet support and intellisense/code completion, auto-backups, etc. I use the enterprise version which has a killer Visual Query Builder and XML Editor in it, support for multisite deployment via ftp. I supports 30 languages including AS2 and it looks like they are gearing up to support Flex 2/AS3. It has full support for ASP.NET, C#, VB etc., so if you are in the BD.NET camp it is a good choice. Some of the best support I have ever seen. Downsides for CF'ers are that it only supports VSS for source control, and the code competion doesn't enumerate tag attributes. Also, it ain't cheap ($350 for the Enterprise version). But it is a great editor for Windows users involved in multiple development environments. 45 day free eval; might be worth your while to check it out. www.sapien.com On 3/9/06, Jon Block <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Not trying to fire off a crazy debate but this seems like a fantastic > editor... it's got all of the keystore shortcuts I need to be really > productive. Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
Rick, Do not even mention He3.. pah! ;) we have done a lot of work on CFEclipse especially recently to bring it in line with some of the HS user's expectations but we cant keep everyone happy. I have some plans for functions in CFE that will make HS look like what it is... an old editor. I prefer TextPad rather than HS. We have a browser, we have a couple... in fact we have four if you count the external setup. We 'could' add it like in HS but I I dont know about other people but if you are doing frameworks... well.. I dont know how that could help, you still need to do something like fuseaction=bla or event=bob etc. I have plans for it to figure this out automatically for you in the future as well as CFE providing function insight into CFC's for you... homesite WONT do that .. ok ok.. they will add VTMs. big deal. Anyways.. if you like what you got. keep using it.. but the question was about upgrading... and at the moment I think CFE is only other editor out there that is really focusing on coldfusion 'coders'. anyways... Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
With CFE how does the CSS work as you type it out? I always liked how DWMX deals with that. I have seen people mention plugins for CSS, so I assume there is one out there that gives you the same effect? I think that is one thing that keeps me away from CFE, not knowing what plug ins to get or not get and being too lazy to research it :) On 3/9/06, Rick Root <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Munson, Jacob wrote: > >>Oh! Yes I used the latest version of CFE. It's not that there is a bug, it's just not as robust as Homesite. I realize that Homesite hasn't released a new version in years and I would like to use CFE, I just don't like the color support. Have you checked the latest version of CFE with the latest version of eclipse? There are some minor bugs on colouring here and there, but the advantages outweigh these kind of cosmetic things IMHO, and CFE is improving all the time, when was the last new feature added to HS+? :-) On 3/9/06, Robert Everland III <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Mark, > > The one thing that has really kept me from using CFE is that the color > coding is not as robust as Homesite. Any reason I > should use > some other tool? Opinions? I've read all the other posts, and the only thing I'll add is some insight on HS's future. Before I get to that, I'll say that I'm a CFE user, mainly because I can use it to also edit XML, Perl, CSS, and just about anything else I'll need in the future. Having everything in one IDE is just awesome! Last year at CFUnited I asked Ben Forta about Macromedia's plans for HomeSite. He said they will continue to support it with language upgrades, when new versions of CF come out, but they won't continue to put out feature releases. I have to give the caveat that I don't believe Ben was speaking for Macromedia, and also Adobe is now in charge. But I have no reason not to think the above statement is still true, considering all the resources Adobe is putting into CFE (also, Flex is now an Eclipsed based IDE). That said, I don't see why you couldn't stay with HS for a long time, if you so desire. At least until CFE and/or DW come out with some must have features that you don't get with HS. Personally, CFE already has that must have feature, just by being an Eclipse plugin. :) - [INFO] -- Access Manager: This transmission may contain information that is privileged, confidential and/or exempt from disclosure under applicable law. Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
There are certain features that we just get used to having and use all the time. Recently I started using the Synchronize feature in DWMX and DW8 due to no source control here and that one feature I am growing fond of. Although I am sure I could find something to get the same result with another IDE. It took me a LONG time to get over the no ctrl-y to delete a line in DWMX like I had in HS+ and still have in Toad to this day. Matter of fact, again now I am annoyed it is missing :) On 3/9/06, Dawson, Michael <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > What I find interesting after reading tons of these messages is that > many people may not switch editors just because of one, or two, little > features to which they have grown accustomed. > > It doesn't take a whole bunch of features to want to stay, but it takes > quite a few to make a switch. > > ~| Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:234826 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I ""Upgrade"" to something else?
I seem to try every version of DW as it comes out, but quickly get dizzly looking at all the [EMAIL PROTECTED] in the GUI and go right back to HS+. I have switched over to CFEclipse for after-hour work, which I am really starting to like, but currently use HS+ for my 9-5 job. The only reason I still use HS+ for work is that I work from home in Jacksonville and all my development is in San Diego. I use a cable modem and VPN to access the network and rely heavily on RDS, which works very nice in HS+ with VPN. Mapping a drive really seems to bog things down and FTP is a pain, as I prefer to develop on the development servers instead of my local PC. Now, once RDS is integrated with CFEclipse... I'll switch over in a heart-beat! Terry > Not trying to fire off a crazy debate but this seems like a fantastic > editor... it's got all of the keystore shortcuts I need to be really > productive. Which is very annoying if you are developing CFE since you get responses such as "I wont switch until you make it work just like my old editor" Since I am not re-building HomeSite its a bit of a bummer. It doesn't take a whole bunch of features to want to stay, but it takes > quite a few to make a switch. Which is what keeps me busy, adding as many new features that are USEFUL to developers. Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
If it works for you and you never get to some point where you ask yourself why does it not have feature XYZ then I say just stay with it. About 1-2 years ago I forced myself to switch from Homesite/CFStudio to DWMX. The reason I forced myself to do it was because I saw that a lot of people were using it and did not want to get hired onto some contract where that was the defined IDE to use but know nothing about it. For a long time I was really annoyed by and to this day I miss some of those shortcut keys I knew all too well in HS. However after some time with the product and learning some of the features in it, I have no problems with it and can not remember the last time I fired up HS+ to do something. I like some of the new features introduced in DW8, not sure if I'd pay for the upgrade just for those features but luckily I do not have to purchase the software here(the company does that). I have tried CFE a few times and just can not see what the big deal about it is. I think I will end up forcing myself to switch to CFE sometime this year and for the same reasons I forced myself to DWMX. Although that really depends on how the battle against .NET pans out here since CF might be retired here. RE: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
What I find interesting after reading tons of these messages is that many people may not switch editors just because of one, or two, little features to which they have grown accustomed. It doesn't take a whole bunch of features to want to stay, but it takes quite a few to make a switch. I thought to make you all happy I added this ability to CFEclipse to drag images from a project onto a document and it gives you the image width and height (was actually quite easy, only a couple of lines of code) but it can take some time if you have a large image You would have only needed to ask me once BTW ;) MD ~| Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:234819 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
RE: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
Hmmm. I have 1GB RAM and have not seen the grayed-out problem. I have also opened Flash 8 and FW 8 at the same time just to see the memory usage. However, I didn't really do any work that would have sucked up more memory. It is a RAM pig, I can say that. I have been using TopStyle frequently just to play with it again. On opening, it only takes < 4MB of memory. After a few files, it gets between 10-20MB. Not too bad. M!ke -Original Message- From: Michael T. RE: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
I think Sandra's solution was to close and reopen the snippets pane. That is what I was doing, but I also had to open and close a CF document, in addition to the snippets pane. Don't get me wrong, I really think you have done a kick-ass job with CFE. I appreciate your devotion to that project. I'm just so reliant on snippets. ;-) I'd be happy to help you test anything related to this issue. Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
no good reason that i can think of. i have tried dw8 probably 10 times now, off an on for a month or so, and then back to hs+ and cannot find a reason to switch. i cannot drag an image to the code view, and have dw8 populate the height/width parameters like HS+ does, and for that reason alone ill not switch. i have requested that feature 1 times to no avail. i have also tried to make shortcuts for some things and it errors out on me, and then i cannot make the shortcut again, due to some error again, and i searched for it, and still canot fix it, and gave up again. what a ramble that was! :) anyway, if it works for you man, no need to switch. tw On 3/9/06, Michael T. RE: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
I used CF Studio 5/HS+ for years and years. I started with HS2.5. I also had years' worth of snippets, shortcuts, macros, code blocks, etc setup in HS. Last fall, I decided to try DW8 when it was released. I, and another developer that uses a Mac, decided to try it to have a bit of standardization here. DW is a bit slower to start than HS. It has some nice features, but I miss the snippet variables and the macros. I have not had time to really dig into customizing DW yet. The main feature that always stands out is the smart "auto-close tag" feature. DW knows the context of the tag you are closing and will automatically close the correct tag even if you are deep within several levels of nested tags. All you need to do is type: " and let DW auto-close it, DW will force the tag to either upper- or lower-case, depending on your settings, and then you will have invalid XML. The only way around this is to use all upper- or lower-case letters in your XML elements (not a good solution) or to create your own custom tags that refer to your XML elements (this is ok, but can be a pain to maintain). I tried CFEclipse, but I cannot, for the life of me, get the damn snippets to work. I have tried the stable builds, the bleeding-edge builds, but no worky. The problem I have with the CFE snippets are the main reason I will not use the Eclipse platform. My advice is that it's great to try other tools, but if you can't find a replacement that just knocks your socks off, there is no reason to switch. Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
Hi Jon, Here are some good reasons to switch to CFE. My feature list 1. popup help on the tag insight 2. attribute help as well! 3. only remaining attributes shown on insight 4. mandatory and optional attributes indicated 5. tasks - if you add this is added as a task and later if you click on the task it opens the correct file in the correct project on the correct line! 6. also all tasks for a project are shown if you have one file open in the project 7. built in compare function (not as good as some compare or diff products but useful) - you can highlight two files and compare them to each other, or compare to the local history (previous saves of the file) or if using source control with previous versions commited to the repository 8. snippets (if they are your thing) are more flexible - you can have variables and can insert them using trigger text (sorry I don't use this so I don't have full details) 9. if you use source control the integration (as mentioned) of CVS and others via plugin is very sweet. If you don't use source control yet - flag it as a 'we should do this in the future and eclipse will make it easy') 10. double click on any pane tab to expand it to full screen (same to revert) 11. fast view - right click on tab of a pane and select fast view - now appears as an icon in bottom left - this is a way to have access to panes but leave work area uncluttered 12. eclipse and cfeclipse are being actively developed and improved unlike homesite+ 13. free! unlike DW! 14. last but deffinately not least eclipse is not one tool but can be any number of tools to build the IDE you need because of the huge number of plugins available. Many have been mentioned on this list recently - I use SQLExplorer to see database structure and fire the odd query while developing, XMLBuddy to edit XML files, but just about everything you can imagine from CSS to HTML to javascript to perl editors are available as plugins. Including the flex builder (which shows Macroadobes committment to eclipse) You might also want to have a quick drool over the new features soon to be added in the next release of CFE http://www.socialpoints.com/blog/client/index.cfm/2006/3/3/CFECLIPSE--Sneak-Peak-at-new-features-for-next-release HTH On 3/9/06, Jon Block <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Not trying to fire off a crazy debate but this seems like a fantastic > editor... it's got all of the keystore shortcuts I need to be really > productive. Re: I still use HomeSite+ 5.5 - Should I "Upgrade" to something else?
I love CFE, but I can't get away from HS. It's just perfect for me. There is no way for me to be as productive and as efficient as when I'm developing with HS. I've been using it for so long that my brain automatically uses my code templates and keyboard shortcuts for all kinds of things. I've set up my snippets and what not in CFE and I'm sure that I could get to the same point with it if I used it consistently for a long time. Still, I can't seem to set aside HS for the time it'd take to make the keystrokes as second nature in CFE as they now are in HS. I don't think the changes to the CFML language are a valid reason to change, given the fact that you can download HS updates to address that issue. If you're looking for a reason though, and this is the reason I keep trying to switch to CFE, the fact that Adobe's inevitably going to stop supporting it at some point. The bottom line is, with DW out there and CFE gaining momentum, I think HS's got a very limited future in terms of viability and support. --Ferg Mark Drew wrote: > Because its 3 years old is a good reason.. to a level I guess. also if you > are using it for a language (cfml) that is changing and getting new > features. > > If you are just after an editor you can stick with it... but if you need > more of an IDE switch to CFEclipse > > MD > > On 3/9/06, Jon Block <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> Not trying to fire off a crazy debate but this seems like a fantastic >> editor... it's got all of the keystore shortcuts I need to be really >> productive. Because its 3 years old is a good reason.. to a level I guess. also if you are using it for a language (cfml) that is changing and getting new features.
