[cobirds] Brown Pelican at Lake Hasty (Bent) on 4/14

2016-04-14 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
The BROWN PELICAN found and first reported on CFO Facebook by Jill White-Smith
was still present at Lake Hasty this afternoon (4/14). Several folks saw the
bird right below the John Martin Reservoir dam with a large group of White
Pelicans. This area is between the southwest corner of Lake Hasty and the JM
Res dam and is best accessed by driving down to the campground on the east side
of the dam and then heading south to the fisherman's parking lot. Large amount
of water are being released and the pelicans are presumably enjoying a fresh
supply of fish in assorted degrees of wholeness.

Is this the Lake Beckwith bird found by Dave Silverman?

[cobirds] Lincoln's Sparrows,Loveland,Larimer Cnty.

2016-04-14 Thread Elaine Coley
Hi All,
Don't know if this is worthwhile or not, but I've had 2 Lincoln's Sparrows off
and mostly on all of today feeding on the ground where I throw seed under a
dogwood bush. It's been a while since I've had them around here -- actually
since the 2013 flood on the Big Thompson. They are pretty and dainty for
sparrows.

Observation end time: 13:00:00
Total observation time: 5 hours

Official Counter:Roger Rouch

Observers:Bill Wuerthele, Kathie Moss, Lee Farrell, Linda Farrell,
  Matt Smith

Visitors:
Many visitors all spent a few hours with binoculars helping spot and
learning about the HawkWatch. They were a gentleman named Ray, Rick and
Rachael Krohn, and four associates of Matt Smith who were playing hooky
from work. All seemed to enjoy the nice weather and good landscape views.

Weather:
A pleasant warm day with temperatures from the low 60's to low 70's with a
light wind around 2 bft from the SE in the morning and occasionally from
the NW in the afternoon. Mostly cloudless in the morning becoming partly
cloudy.

Raptor Observations:
A slow day for migrating raptors with three counted in the first two hours.
Local raptor activity also seemed relatively light with Turkey Vultures
mostly around Mt. Morrison with as many 6 in the sky at one time. Local
Red-tailed Hawk sightings often over the west ridges with a few close
fly-by's. A male Kestrel was observed a few times. Highlight of the day
was a local accipiter first sighted about two binocular fields high that
went into a hard stooped power dive to ground level SE of the ridge.

Non-raptor Observations:
Seen or heard were Spotted Towhee, American Robin, Dark-eyed Junco, Western
Meadowlark, Black-billed Magpie, Common Raven, Mountain Chickadee,
White-throated Swift, Western Scrub-jay.

Predictions:
Unsettled weather will possibly reinvigorate migration?

Report submitted by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies
(jeff.bi...@birdconservancy.org)
Dinosaur Ridge information may be found at:
http://www.birdconservancy.org/

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an
old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the
ridge.

[cobirds] Eastern Pueblo and Otero Co. birding 4/14

2016-04-14 Thread Brandon K. Percival

Stephany McNew and I went looking for some birds in eastern Pueblo County and
in Otero County this morning.
Near Boone, Pueblo County, we saw a Mountain Plover and Vesper Sparrow.
At Lake Holbrook, Otero County, we saw the adult Little Blue Heron, plus
shorebirds: Snowy Plovers, Semipalmated Plover, Killdeer, American Avocet,
Black-necked Stilt, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, Baird's and Least
Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitcher, and Wilson's Phalarope.  Also on the
Reservoir, a Forster's Tern, Bonaparte's Gulls, Clark's and Western Grebes.  We
saw a Northern Rough-winged Swallow that caused an e-bird flag.  Also, several
Burrowing Owls nearby.
Lake Cheraw, Otero County was very high with water still.  Some ducks, nothing
really noteworthy.
We drove north of Cheraw, Otero County, and saw several Wilson's Snipe, and a
Chipping Sparrow.
It was a fun morning of birding on the plains.

They usually nest somewhere around the school, sometimes right on the

Re: [cobirds] bird feed - thread closed

2016-04-14 Thread David Suddjian
Dear COBirds,

The COBirds list rules direct against discussion of bird feeding. Here,
taken from " What SHOULD NOT be posted to COBirds":

*Discussions about bird feeding technique are not allowed (i.e. what to
feed, how to place, which work best. etc.).*

So I ask that anyone wishing to help Dean with his request do so off the
list and the thread is closed.

Thanks,

[cobirds] bird feed

2016-04-14 Thread Dean Colprit
I have two feeders in my yard full of sunflower seeds. When I first put the
feeders out, I was filling the feeders every other day. In December I
bought a new bag of feed and since then the birds just aren't real
interested. Is it possible the feed is bad?

[cobirds] Prothonotary, Weld County Wanderings, Lower Lathum & BB Draw

2016-04-14 Thread Connie Kogler
Went up yesterday to see the beautiful Prothonotary. Thanks to the one who
found it and for the continued reports! Beautiful life bird #530.

I then headed ENE and as I drove by Black Hollow saw a lovely Bald Eagle nest
with eaglets. Norma’s Grove on CR100/57 had Starlings, Mourning Doves, Western
Meadowlarks and one Robin. (By the way - didn’t there used to be a cool old
rock building up at the end of that road? With diamond shaped windows? It’s
gone.)

Pawnee Bird Tour starting at 104/57, had one Swainson’s Hawk, 1 Prairie Falcon,
1 American Kestrel, a dozen or so Mccown’s Longspurs, plenty of Western
Meadowlarks and Horned Lark and maybe one Chestnut-Collared Longspur.

I did a slow loop d loop drive through Crow Valley - no small passerines noted.
Robins, Eurasian Collared Doves and two vans of traveling birders.

Heading South on CR 79 I saw two Great Horned Owls on nests, turning left on CR
74 because of the ROAD CLOSED signs when I tried to turn right yielded a very
nice surprise about a half mile down on the north side - FIVE Long-Billed
Curlews in a farm field.

I stopped at the South Platte River - finding 1 Downy Woodpecker and five Wild
Turkeys.

Lower Lathum and BB Draw wasn’t hopping but birds were hanging out. Cinnamon,
Blue-winged and Green-winged Teals, Gadwalls, Mallards, a Canada Goose. Greater
and Lesser Yellowlegs, a bunch of Wilson’s Snipe, Yellow-headed and Red-winged
Blackbirds. White Pelicans, Northern Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk.

All in all a most enjoyable day!
