[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron

2020-07-23 Thread Leon Bright
COBirders-- Once again, Brandon Percival has alerted me to a bird species
I had not seen. I finally went to Pueblo City Park at the same time the
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was there, about 6:45 this morning. It was
perched on a branch of the dead tree on the duck pond (Lake Joy).

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron in Pueblo again 6/10

2020-06-10 Thread Brandon
The elusive adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron that I first saw back on May
27th, showed up again at Pueblo City Park, Pueblo County this morning. A
few other birders were able to see it, and many photos were taken. The
bird was standing on the island on the west side of Lake Joy for a little
while, then flew to some other trees around the pond (including a Blue
Spruce, and at one point it had a blue spruce cone in its mouth). See
photo on CFO Facebook Page.

The singing Eastern Wood-Pewee also continues in Pueblo this morning, along
the North Side of the Arkansas River, about 0.3 of a mile west of Pueblo
Blvd. It is about a 20 minute walk from Pueblo City Park.

Only of interest to me, I saw my first Eurasian Collared-Dove, at my
family's property at 9,050 feet in the elevation in the Wet Mountains,
Custer County on June 8th, it was in Ponderosa Pine and Aspen trees
mostly. I figured one would show up there at some point.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-heron at Blanca Wetlands

2019-07-10 Thread John Rawinski
Today, while conducting her shorebird surveys, Lisa Rawinski found a first
year Yellow-crowned Night-heron at Blanca Wetlands (Alamosa County).
Currently, the wetlands are closed but will be open to birders on July
16th. The bird was seen in the wetlands just to the NW of the parking lot
at North Mallard.

This will be a first San Luis Valley record, so far as I know.

Interestingly, Righter and Andrews said "very rare nonbreeding
visitor...most birds being seen in mid-July and later are probably migrants
or post-season wanderers." Looks right on.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron, El Paso County

2019-05-23 Thread Steve Getty
CO Birders,

For the record, a citizen in Monument, CO, had been trying to figure-out this
stealthy visitor to their backyard for a few days starting late last week
(their words re stealthy behavior). They are just east of Monument Creek in
Monument (north of water treatment plant). They thought it was a Yellow-crowned
Night Heron, and took this photo Tuesday AM after the snow. Not a happy heron
(yes, anthropomorphizing).

They didn't know what to do and submitted to CC library email on Tues. OK. An
astute librarian forwarded contact info to me. After some emails today, they
said that they had a photo from Tues, but didn't see yesterday. They'd phone me
right away if it showed-up again. No word so far

Very interesting possible record.

Cordially,
Steve Getty, Colorado Springs, CO

[cid:image002.jpg@01D51195.4F448EB0]

It also has some feathers coming off the head sort of like a bobwhite.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron - Yuma country

2018-09-02 Thread Gregg Goodrich
The Yellow-crowned Night-Herons continue at Stalker SWA just west of Wray.
The DFO field trip yesterday added it as well as the two Black-bellied
Plovers at Prewitt to the Colorado Big Year species list. Blowing past
David’s previous goal of 333 species for the year so far.

The herons were on the North side of the Stalker Lake roosting in the
Russian Olive trees. The adult was in the central part of the northern
shoreline and the two juveniles were East of the adult about a 100 yards.
We spotted them by moving along the South shore and scoping across the lake
thanks to the sharp eyes of Betty Glass and Chris Owens. Also heard two
Northern Cardinals on the west end of the lake. You can get a good view of
a marsh on the NW corner of the lake if you climb a little steep hill on
the SW side of the lake. From here we got good looks at three Solitary
Sandpipers. Surprised there were not more shorebirds at this nice looking
habitat.

Common Nighthawks and Red-headed Woodpeckers were seen at the fish hatchery
just north of the lake.

At Prewitt we had the two Black-bellied Plovers in glorious breeding
plumage. They stand head and shoulders above the other shorebirds and with
all black bellies and throats and then white head and neck are quite the
contrasts in colors. We were all very impressed! Definitely worth the trip.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Kiowa

2014-09-24 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All
Nick Moore and I spent the day birding in Kiowa and Bent again.

The main highlight was a first year YC Night Heron at Née So Pah Reservoir. To
reach this spot, take US 287 S from Eads s to CR A ( Kiowa)/ CR WW (Bent). Turn
to the west on this road that forms the county line.

Go N on Kiowa CR 40 (which is also called CR 39.5 in places). Go N past CR C.
You will see a track running to the east that is labelled as being closed.
Continue N on 39.5. Shortly thereafter ( within a mile) there is an unmarked
dirt track to the east (at this point reservoir obvious). Take track down
towards res. Park on grassy spot. YC Night Heron was in water under trees at s
end of reservoir.

At Jett Reservoir there was an American Golden-Plover and 9 more were at NW
corner of John Martin Reservoir in Bent. Also at Jett, a few CC Longspurs and a
Prairie Merlin and - for Kiowa - a rare Hooded Merg

Tempel Grove was birdless. Neenoshe Locust Grove was packed (49 species)
including 100+ OC Warblers. Not much unusual though with Plumbeous and Cassin's
Vireos being best finds.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Larimer

2014-09-19 Thread David Wade
I searched the Prospect Ponds Natural Area in Fort Collins today (Sept 19)
after seeing a report of a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron on the ABA Rare Bird
Alert and luckily, I found not one, but two of them. I found them in some
cottonwoods at edge of Merganser Pond which is the northern -most pond of
the natural area. The best view was from the Poudre River Trail at the 4.75
mile mark indicated by a small blue sign on the side of the trail. Nick
Komar sent me a map of the spot but it's not usable. (Can you post it here
Nick?) Here's a couple of photos:
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/11383@N05/15106986300/

As part of my search for the YCNH I explored nearby Running Deer NA and saw
15 Snipe circling the wetlands there. Shot some photos and after looking at
them I came across an intriguing bird. The underwing pattern of this snipe
comes close the pattern shown by Common Snipe. The Common Snipe should show
two white bars, white edging on the secondaries and fine lines along the
flanks. I can see two indistinct white bars but no secondary edging and the
flank barring? I'm not sure. Does anybody have any comments?

2014-06-09 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

Two or three years ago we found a Yellow-crowned Night Heron attempting to
breed with one of the Black-crowned Night Herons (unsuccessful ... 3 or 4
eggs though). I found a Yellow-crowned Night Heron yesterday at Glenmere
Park while on my birding journey. It just so happened I felt inclined to
scan all trees carefully--becaue I had not seen any "white birds" and was
determined to find one (lone Snowy Egret). While scanning on north side of
park at the bench along the shore I carefully went tree-to-tree looking at
each bird (lots of Black-crowneds). At the top of tree on west I noticed a
Black-crowned pair and next to it what looked like a smaller bird which
caused me to say "hmmm, this sleeping bird is different, smaller and I can
notice feather pattern on back more noticeably". I watched it for long
while and "wallah" it raised it's head; turned around; and even faced me--a
Yellow-crowned Night Heron! If it is the same yellow-crowned from 2-3
years ago it stayed for about a month and a half.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, El Paso County

I saw the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron this morning about 9 AM, reported by Kaye
Lafreniere a few days ago. Here is a photo I managed to get:

I agree with Joe Roller that this is a "second fall" bird by the pictures in

Exciting bird to get to see in El Paso County and am grateful to Kaye

[cobirds] YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON in Holyoke, Phillips County

2013-06-02 Thread Joe Roller
Cole Wild called at 2:15 PM, today, Sunday, May 2nd, to report a
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron in the bed of Frenchman's Creek, just
below the Lions' Fishing Hole in eastern Holyoke, Phillips County,
Colorado. There are no previous
records of this night-heron for Phillips County, according to the CFO
County Birding Website.
Nearby were White-rumped Sandpipers (10), Semipalmated Sandpipers (2), and
a Black-necked Stilt,
also a rarity in that most attractive of Colorado's many fine counties.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron and Caspian Tern, McIntosh Lake, Longmont, Boulder County

2011-08-10 Thread Todd Deininger
On my bike ride around the lake this morning I saw an immature Yellow-crowned
Night Heron on the east side of the lake in the reeds on the north side. I did
not have my bins, but it was close enough to see its dark bill and long legs. I
watched it for a few minutes before it disappeared into the reeds as a Sora fly
over. When I rode to the south side, the night heron fly to the south side of
the lake. I could not find it again on my second loop. If you search for this
bird, you might also check the small pond north of McIntosh off of Harvard.

On the west side of the lake I had a flyover Caspian Tern . As I rode around
the lake the Caspian Tern was circling the west side of the lake. Early I has a
Forster's Tern flying around the lake.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron at Glenmere Park, Weld County

2011-07-23 Thread Mary Keithler
On Thursday, July 21st, Lois Levinson, Harriet Stratton, Kate Frost and
myself visited Glenmere Park in Greeley to check on the nesting progress of
the Yellow-crowned Night Heron. We arrived around 10:40 AM and promptly
found the bird on the nest from our vantage point on the west side of the
park, near the playground. The heron spent some time sitting on the nest
and also stood around in the tree near the nest. After about half an hour,
it flew down to the ground and fed from the rocky shore on the southwest
side of the park. After 15-20 minutes, it flew back to the nest. We did
not see any evidence of live nestlings or feeding at the nest. Since the
heron was still hanging out by the nest, we assumed there still were eggs
present. We left after a little over an hour. The park has many juvenile
black-crowned night herons, as well as cattle egrets and snowy egrets. Some
snowy juveniles were still in nests, easily viewed from the south side of
the park.

2011-06-28 Thread Ira Sanders
Birders,

I want to thank Bob Shade for his description on how to find the YCNH in
Greeley. I had tried several times to see this bird without any success.
Following Bob's directions I was able to see the YCNH from the little
parking lot at the west end of Glenmere. However, the mosquitoes were still
able to find me.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Glenmere Park, Greeley, Weld County, June 26

2011-06-26 Thread Marilyn
Some friends and I observed the Yellow-crowned NIght Heron on the nest
at Glenmere today from about 11:00 am to 1:30 pm. As previously
reported, the best viewing of the nest is from the north side of the
lake facing the island. The bird's nest is in the tallest tree on the
far west side of the island. To locate the nest, point your
binoculars or scope about 3 feet to the right of the rock at the base
of the tree/island and pan up about half way toward the top of the
tree. The nest is buried in branches and can only be seen when the
wind blows the branches out of the way.

Although a number of juveniles were seen on other nests, on the ground
and flying, I assume they were Black-crowned Night Herons. The Yellow-
crowned did not leave the nest the entire we were there. She stood up
and preened and paid a lot of attention to the nest. Is it possible
she's still sitting on eggs or hatchlings?

This was my second attempt at locating the bird. Good luck!

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron - Glenmere Park, Greeley (Weld)

2011-06-18 Thread Kathy and Jeff Dunning
Greetings all –

We'll try again - this time with a subject!

Late this afternoon, Jeff and I wandered up to Greeley to see if we
could find the Yellow-crowned Night Heron in Glenmere Park. There we
ran into Shawn from Loveland (sorry, if I’ve misspelled your name) and
his family who were there on the same mission. Eventually we all got
“adequate” views of the bird which was hunkered down on its nest.

I believe the best views are obtained from the north side of the lake.
The bird and its nest are in the tallest tree at the west end of the
island. The nest is on the right-hand side of that tree about two
thirds of the way up.

The Glenmere Park rookery was a hopping place full of Black-crowned
Night Herons, Snowy Egrets (including some tiny clumsy chicks) and
Cattle Egrets.

After dinner, we returned home via Lower Latham Reservoir. At the
ditch on the west side of the reservoir we were surprised to find a
pair of Wood Ducks. The marsh areas were lush and full of blackbirds
and Marsh Wrens.

The good news: the “pond” on the SE side of the road, which had held
such stunningly low numbers of birds this spring, is still very
present and holding a nice selection of birds right now (boding well
for fall migration, which as Joe Roller points out, starts in about a
week). Most notable of the birds in the pond were a couple of
White-rumped Sandpipers (getting a bit late?). In addition, there
were a good number of Wilson’s Phalarope, American Avocet and
Black-necked Stilts. The ducks were well represented with all three
teal, Redhead, Mallard and N. Shovelers.

We were unable to turn up any bitterns (of either variety).

Good birding,

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron attempted nesting at Glenmere Park (Weld Co)

I visited Glenmere Park on Tuesday evening (7:15 pm), 7 June 2011, with Cole

scope. It was standing on a nest. Tim watched an adult Black-crowned
Night-Heron bring it a stick. The YCNH accepted the stick and seemed to tend
the nest with it. It also sat down on the nest as if incubating eggs. See
link for photos of the YCNH standing and sitting on the nest.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Fountain Creek Regional Park, Colorado Springs

2010-04-16 Thread Kara Lewantowicz
Hi all,

I found an adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron at Hansen Nature Park (southern
part of Fountain Creek Regional Park) this morning around 10:30 am.  From the
Hansen Nature Park parking lot, take a small social trail that goes north
through the woods.  When you reach the marsh, you will notice two fallen down
willow trees on your left (and a gigantic willow tree straight ahead on the
edge of the trail).  If you look west across the water to the opposite bank,
the heron was standing in the reeds.  When I left the bird was still there and
a person walking two large dogs did not spook it.

Other birds at Fountain Creek Regional Park this morning (mostly FOYs):
- Snowy Egret (South Rice's Pond)

At Fort Carson at sunrise this morning, I observed a FOY Swainson's Hawk.  A
Long-billed Curlew flew low over the airfield while I conducted a bird survey.
There is a small reservoir below the airfield that I presume the bird flew up
from.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Timnath Reservoir

2009-09-04 Thread Cole Wild
Earlier this afternoon Eric DeFonso, Gary Lefko, and myself refound the Red
Knot that Nick found earlier today in the NE corner of Timnath Reservoir
(Larimer County). It is an adult bird in mostly basic plumage, but it still had
a little bit of orange on the belly.

Then just before dark Nick Komar and I saw a juvenile Yellow-crowned
Night-Heron fly over us calling at the NE side of the reservoir. It then landed
along the north shore for about 15 seconds before a Great Blue Heron chased it
off. After this it continued north until it was out of sight.

I ended up seeing 17 species of shorebirds at Timnath with the best being the
Red Knot, 3 Pectoral Sandpipers, and 2 Red-necked Phalaropes. Other birds of
interest were 2 Common Goldeneyes and 2 Canvasbacks.

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (YCNH) in Alamosa County

2009-08-07 Thread Nick Komar
At dusk on Thursday, 6 Aug 2009, I watched a juvenile YCNH in flight and on the
ground at close range (about 20 feet!) using my vehicle as a blind. The
location was about 10 miles south of Alamosa (in Alamosa County, San Luis
Valley). More specifically, it was at a wet culvert crossing underneath Rd. S
112 a few miles north of the Conejos County line. This road runs due south for
miles through the Rio Vega Ranch, a few miles west of Alamosa NWR but with
similar habitat. There are many Black-crowned Night-Herons in this area. I
identified this individual as a YCNH from is legs dangling behind its tail in
flight (rather than just feet), its long necked posture when standing (rather
than hunchbacked), its small white markings on the wing, and most importantly
its stubby, all-black bill. Unfortunately it was too dark to get a decent
photo. I could not relocate it in the morning (Friday 7 Aug). During my search
this morning, I did find 2 singing Willow Flycatchers about a mile further
south in a cattail marsh spanning both sides of the road. Also of potential
interest for Alamosa County were several Evening Grosbeaks feeding on pinyon
nuts at Zapata Falls Picnic Area (Alamosa appears to be the only western CO
county with no breeding evidence in the published CO Breeding Bird Atlas) and
two sightings of Band-tailed Pigeon at the same location (also absent from the
first Atlas).
Anyone who wants more detailed info on any of these sightings or locations,
feel free to contact me directly (outside of this forum).
In Andrews and Righter's Colorado Birds (1992), there are no YCNH records
from the San Luis Valley. The entry is also lacking in any of the SLV County
checklists on the CFO County Birding website. Photo documentation would be
useful if anyone gets the chance to photograph this bird, given that it may be
a first area record..

[cobirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (YCNH) - Bent County

2009-08-01 Thread Brad

Hi all,

Mark Peterson and I did a little birding yesterday in SE CO, primarily
in Bent County.

The best birding was at the west end of John Martin Res. where we had
an adult YCNH amongst the double digit Black-crowned Night-Herons,
numerous Great Blue Herons, a few Snowy Egrets, and single Great
Egret. Also present were large numbers of American White Pelicans
(100+) and American Avocets. Unfortunately, we did not see the
Neotropic Cormorant that has been around that same area.

We also saw the previously reported Least Bittern at the Ft. Lyon SWA.
