Can you run the WWDC app on your iPod Touch? If so, you can download them from
within the app.

(Er, sry if it’s weird that I can’t remember what functionality iPods have any
more. It’s actually a while since I’ve seen one, and I tend to watch these

Wrong guess.

The content is kept in the app, it downloads just fine, still, you can even
find it on the device if you use iExplorer or similar. The app just crashes
sometimes (often) when you try to play it.

And it broke long, long before that fiasco of a weekend.

No 405. I think that session was a lab.

The issue I’m having right now with Swift is I can’t keep up with it, no pun
intended. It’s great that Apple is being so responsive developing Swift as the
community puts in bug reports and comments, but I wish at this point I could
forget everything I learned and go learn it all over again from scratch.

WWDC 2013 Core Data Earthquake Sample?

2014-02-16 Thread Rick Mann
In the WWDC 2013 video about Core Data performance, they used an Earthquake
app. But this one is nicer than the threaded Core Data sample code. The sample
you can get uses none of the optimizations shown in the WWDC 2013 talk.

Is that Earthquake sample available anywhere?

If not, Apple really should make all their WWDC talk apps available. For that
matter, they should make the WWDC app itself available as source.

TIA,

2013-11-08 Thread 2551
I have now been fortunate to receive a copy of the code from a list member. I’m
also grateful to several others that also kindly offered me the code.

I’d been banging my head on the desk over this problem for nearly a week. It
took 28 minutes for the list to answer my wishes. It took me about ten minutes
to scan the code and see where I’d been going wrong. You folks are awesome! :))

Thanks again to all who responded. :)

Apple Sample Code WWDC 2010 session 114

2013-11-08 Thread 2551
Hi folks

I’m desperately trying to track down some Apple sample code that was featured
at the WWDC 2010, related to session 114, entitle d ‘Advanced Cocoa Text Tips
and Tricks.

The video is available on Apple’s Developer forum and iTunes University, but
the sample project used in the video is not available on the site. Nor has
Google returned me any successful hits.

I think the actual Xcodeproj file is called ‘WWDC_2010_114’ and includes a
number of classes I’m desperate to get hold of (I’ve tried recreating as much
as I can from the video, but alas I’m not skilled enough in Cocoa yet and I
can’t figure out the bits I’m missing). The code pertains to implementing
editor features similar to those seen in Xcode like text folding, line numbers
and in-line contextual menus.

I’ve seen other code for line numbers elsewhere (Noodlesoft’s stuff here:
https://github.com/MrNoodle/NoodleKit) but this is not sufficient for what I’m
after.

I’d really appreciate it if anyone could provide a link to where the Apple
sample code might be available, or (long shot!!!) a copy if you happened to
have been an attendee at WWDC 2010 and downloaded yourself!

Phil

This might be a more direct location to help you get what you want:

Re: WWDC videos vs. slides?

2012-11-19 Thread Alex Zavatone
The painfully slow way is to go to locate the downloads in developer.apple.com,
then iTunes, select the ones you are interested in and let them download.

Every time I want to do this, it's not really clear how to get to the videos.

I think I end up finding them when searching for something else.

AHA. At the bottom of the web page for downloads for the Mac Developer program
is a link:

https://developer.apple.com/videos/wwdc/2012/

I'll select one, then click "View in iTunes" and then this opens iTunes and
shows the videos for that section, but not all the videos. You'll have to
navigate within iTunes to go up a level to get all the videos within the other
sections.

https://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/BrowsePrivately/adc.apple.com.16351575641

The confusing part is that iTunes doesn't bother to check if you've already
downloaded them, so you need to be careful.

Also note that there is a link to the top right of the iTunes screen to get the
WWDC source code, which will be very useful to many people.

http://developer.apple.com/devcenter/download.action?path=/wwdc_2012/wwdc_2012_sample_code/wwdc_2012_session_code.dmg

Something went horribly wrong on the iPad. It's actually very hard to get at
the WWDC videos (you have to log into the dev website, then drill down, then
open in iTunes, and if you leave iTunes you have start all over; it's
marginally better on the desktop). After a while they all started to fail, and
no amount of retrying fixed it.

Sounds like a glitch. I think that has happened to me a couple of times.
Reloading the page (or possibly restarting Safari) should fix it. Worst case,
you should be able to download it on your iPad and watch it in your video app.

Somehow I got some kind of audio-only thing. It just shows a WWDC logo, and

And that's where your choice is going to really bite you, because now you'll
rename all the legitimately named 'NS' classes you inevitably use accidentally.
Good luck figuring out a way to automatically tell apart one group of classes

Absolutely I do. In fact when I posted th ecode sample that used NS and was
clued on it I went DOH!

I was using it to distinguish from corresponding CPP classes. We have a great
cross-platform method which lets us ship a Mac and Windows version at the same
time. Why? Well we thin wrap MFC controls and use all logic from the CPP
files without significant MVC concerns. So for Mac thin wrapped code I chose
to name files as NS … easy to spot in the tree … I should have used M. I'll
probably go back and grep NS to M.

Example:

CPropMonogram.cpp implements an MFC dialog for monogramming properties.

NSPropMonogram.m is a thin wrap and calls all logic in CPropMonogram.

NOTE: Due to some cool stuff CPropMonogram.cpp, while full of MFC, compiles
without #ifdef's

MPropMonogram is more correct for naming, I agree.

They also use some three-letter prefixes, like DOM and Web. So there's really
no safety here.

The real solution to this problem is true namespaces instead of the ad-hoc
prefixing we currently abuse:

Do you understand *why* everyone was making a big deal about your choice
of prefix? It's not because people here derive satisfaction from
enforcing Apple's guidelines or documentation notes.

Apple actually reserves ALL two letter prefixes (don't have the doc link
handy, but trust me that this is the case). In addition to NS, some
others that they use: UI, CT, SK, MF, CI, CT, CM come to mind.

The main reason for this reservation is to prevent collision of a class
that might be furnished in a future SDK with your classes. By choosing
to use a two-letter prefix you are creating the possibility that some OS
update, for example, will suddenly break your application.

The same logic applies to prefixing method names in categories. Doubly
so for root classes. For example, in a category on NSObject, instead of
writing

-performBlock:afterDelay:

I opted to use:

-SQS_performBlock:afterDelay:

(Because of course Apple would *never* add a -performBlock:afterDelay:
method.)

IMHO, the "D" of WWDC should be enforced (though I don't know how)

Of the dozens of people from Microsoft who would attend regularly,
approximately 10% were developers.

The rest were PMs, Managers, and anyone else who just 'wanted to go to SF for
the week'.

I agree completely, which is why I decided to explore the idea of converting

Re: WWDC

2012-04-25 Thread Wade Tregaskis

I thought this for a long time, but then came to the realisation that what's
really valuable about WWDC just doesn't scale: access to Apple engineers.

This wasn't always the case. The WWDC presentations used to be jealously
guarded treasures. Now they're much more readily available. There's still some
benefit to actually attending - you'll be able to access sessions from the
conference indefinitely, rather than only for a year or two afterwards - and
there are networking aspects and 3rd party events etc. But I think these pale
in comparison to the exclusive utility of Apple engineer access.

I'd even go so far as to say that today, if you're not spending most of your
time in the labs or otherwise hunting down people to address specific issues,
you're detracting from the common good (in the sense that there's a lot of
others out there who missed out on WWDC tickets who would be doing just that,
in your place).

Likewise for people that walk into the labs and say things like "So I just
opened Xcode for the first time - how's it work?". As an Apple engineer
working the labs a couple of years, I have to admit I really dreaded that level
of question, on so many levels. I couldn't fathom how someone could throw down
thousands of dollars to attend a conference yet not be enough into development
to actually use and know a bit about the tools involved. Treating the
developer labs like CS 101 is the most expensive class you'll ever pay for.

Keep in mind that if you sufficiently impress an Apple engineer, whether by
being generally clever / entertaining / generous / interesting - all largely
functions of the type of problem you go to them with - then some will be
willing to give you their direct contact details, and you can follow up with
them after the conference. Maybe even on other issues, and some time later.
And they can use that time to really dig into your issue, back in their office,
and give you a precise answer you just can't get in a face-to-face meeting.

As Scott noted, this isn't as efficient, or really practical in any sense. As
it is WWDC has a huge impact on Apple's engineers - aside from the week itself
(during which only a thousand or so are at WWDC, at most, on any given day)
there's a lot of preparation for the month or two prior. Developer relations
in particular are working their nuts off to not only get the conference itself
in order, but ancillary things like make sure all the presenters are up to
snuff, that relevant sample code is ready and to a proper standard, etc etc.

Also, physical presence really isn't that useful. There is certainly a
camaraderie that comes from being physically together, which is all warm and
fuzzy and all, but for the most part boring old telepresence solutions (even
email, of all things!) is a perfectly good way to work together with an Apple
engineer. So what you really should be asking pointed questions about, of
Apple, is why you can't get in direct contact with relevant engineers
occasionally. ("Technical Support Incidents" are (were?) vaguely of this
nature, though the indirection through developer relations can be problematic
for everyone involved)

Exactly how many weeks per year do you think Apple's engineers should take away
from their primary jobs in order put on WWDCs? Or to put my point more
directly: this will never happen, for very good reasons. WWDC is very special
because Apple makes the engineers who create the OS & frameworks & tools
available for direct interaction. That makes it a wonderful resource for
developers, but also an inherently constrained one.

I'd personally rather have it this way and difficult to access, than have the
typical conference: run mostly by presenters with a week of training, and maybe
the occasional engineering manager showing up for an hour to give a speech
before being whisked back to work.

For OS X, the NSConference (UK) is one, certainly. http://youtu.be/SKaThGBuSdc
However, you are right. iOS seems to be the most energised segment at the

I suppose it is hard to rival WWDC, but not centring all interactions around

And IIRC from the plaques on the walls all over Moscone West, that
capacity is around 5,200 people including the Apple support staff.

Also, back in the day when there was overlap between JavaOne and WWDC,
to confirm what Mark Gerl mentions below, I recall banners for JavaOne
advertising it being over in Moscone North and/or Moscone South along
with lots of JavaOne attendees mingling around while we were attending WWDC.

I think an important metric for determining conference size, is (should be) how
much Apple developer-staff can be made available on-site for attendees to have
a chance to interact with Apple concerning apps and frameworks. I agree it is a
pity many who really want to go, can't. Having said that, there are a number of
community-organised conventions in the US and Europe throughout the year, if
you can't attend WWDC, those provide great opportunities to network and stay in
touch, I am sure.

Back in the early days you could get tickets for specific days, but that
depended on them releasing the schedule early so you'd know which days you
wanted.

OT but I didn't want to start another thread that might get stomped...

Anyone going to the Mothership (really to buy stuff and just see it) any
time during WWDC?

Maybe we could all arrange a time/place and a bus or something. I think I
remember hearing about someone doing that last year to make it easy? I am
not renting a car just to drive down and back. Unless I have to.

Not even close, IO was absolutely ridiculous , if you applied within 15 seconds
of the opening you were told tickets were sold out even though people 10 mins
later got them. The google io web app was a disaster in design. I think if you
were able to find out about the WWDC tickets in time you could get them and the
site was a million times more stable.

I don't think they need to increase the cost, they need to let developers know
a week ahead so you can plan for it and limit it to developers only.

Different building. JavaOne was in Moscone North and South, which is bigger
than WWDC's Moscone West. It also featured a big traditional tech show floor
(think MacWorld, not WWDC).

(When I was on Apple's Java team I worked in Apple's booth at JavaOne.)

OT: WWDC Rooms available

2009-05-04 Thread David LeBer
Sorry for the off topic post. If you have any questions, please
respond to me directly to minimize the list noise.

The WebObjects community's developer conference WOWODC 2009 is
occurring the weekend before WWDC (June 6 & 7) and we have some rooms
available in our room block at the Hotel Whitcomb. <http://www.hotelwhitcomb.com/
>

The block price is $99/night and is available for bookings from June 5
to the 12th (so it's good for the duration of WWDC).

Details are available here: <http://www.wocommunity.org/wowodc09/west/tickets.html
>

Just remember to mention WOWODC 2009 when you make your reservation.

Thanks,

;david

PS: If you are a WebObjects developer or know someone who is, WOWODC
2009 is shaping up to be an outstanding conference this year.

Re: Sample Code from WWDC 2008?

2009-01-17 Thread Brad Gibbs
I've checked there, but I didn't see the Core Data samples I was
looking for. In fact, there are only two sample code entries in the
Cocoa section that are dated the week of WWDC 2008 ( one is on
subpixel antialiasing and the other deals with layer-backed views) and
no files dated after the end of the conference. Most of the rest of
the code in the Mac / Cocoa section is documentation and sample code
dating back to 2005.

[OT] WWDC session schedule on your iPhone

2008-05-23 Thread Jeff LaMarche
I know this isn't strictly on topic, but I'm sure many list members
are going to WWDC and many have iPhones, so...

I stumbled across this today:

http://kosmaczewski.net/wwdc2008/

Adrian Kosmaczewski created a script to convert the XML data for the
WWDC sessions to iCal format, which will, of course, sync to your
iPhone calendar. Since Apple just released the final session schedule,
now would be a good time to grab it. :)

Well, it'll be interesting to see what effect this newfound
popularity has on the Cocoa community. One suspects a certain amount
of iPhone-fueled "irrational exuberance" when tickets are being
scalped at these rates. A couple years ago, scalpers were going
begging at $900 only days beforehand.

In any case, I'm skipping it deliberately this year: after attending
since the San Jose days, two years ago WWDC became, for me, just
impossibly crowded. Even answering calls of nature was a problem at
times - hate to think what that'll be like this year! (someone
mentioned Moscone West is max-rated for 6075 occupants)

Back then, difficulties with insufficient and poor food, being unable
to get into many sessions, not to mention being barked at by
overzealous "seating police" made me decide to skip WWDC until it can
be moved to a larger venue. There are only so many sessions useful to
each person, and if spending $4000+ on travel, hotel, and e-ticket
can't get you into them, and in some degree of comfort, what's the
point.

I'm hopeful the sellout will enable ADC to unleash Developer iTunes -
with the event sold out, there's little reason not to sell session
videos a la carte.

WWDC 2008 Sessions PDF Generator

2008-05-13 Thread Johannes Fahrenkrug
Hi,

I'm a regular reader but not a too regular poster here. Well, I think
it's time to give something back :)
It's not much, but here we go: Attending WWDC is great, but I need to
print the available sessions. Just looking at them online is not
enough, I need to have a piece of paper to actually circle the ones I
like.
Some browsers (Safari, for example) have trouble printing Ajax pages.
So I wrote a Ruby script that downloads the sessions.xml and creates a
PDF from it. You can find it here:

http://blog.springenwerk.com/2008/05/wwdc-2008-session-pdf-generator-in-ruby.html

I hope this is helpful to some of you guys!
