[ANNOUNCEMENT] Updated: zsh-4.1.1-2

2003-11-13 Thread Peter A. Castro
[I just now realized that I never announced the initial release of
zsh-4.1.1, so, after fixing a minor layout problem in the package, I'm
announcing it now. Better late than never !-]

An updated version of zsh has been released and should be at a mirror
near you real soon.

Zsh has had some internal code restructuring to handle some newer things
which will be comming down the line later in the dev cycle. The 4.0
branch is now closed and will not be developed any further (ending with
version 4.0.7). 4.1 is the new major branch.

Changes include:

- built with cygwin-1.5.5.

- additional/new command completion functions.

- zsh now supports Large File access and 64-bit types.

- zsh is now built with the pcre regex package to handle all of your
  regular expression needs (like filename pattern matching, etc).

- zsh is now built with ncurses instead of termcap.

- files are now installed according to the Filesystem Heirachy Standard
(FHS) (meaning documentation is under /usr/share). This is actually a
fix from the 4.1.1-1 release.

To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions.

If you have questions or comments, please send them to the Cygwin
mailing list (see http://cygwin.com/lists.html).

2003-11-13 Thread koorapati, koundinya
Hey Igor and Nicolas,
Your mails gave me a pointer and I tried setting the TERM variable on
the remote host to vt220 (default was xterm) and now things are working,
although I need to explore more.

Thanks !

I have the same problem when I rlogin to AIX hosts. The TERM
variable is set to xterm. I have tried some other value, aixterm
works a little better. But the best way I found is to replace rlogin
(run xterm.exe -e rlogin "[EMAIL PROTECTED]") with telnet (run xterm.exe -e
telnet -l %2 %1).

No, the "-n" option to ls forces it to output numeric values instead.

That's the default mode Windows gives it. This should work, but somehow
doesn't... Can sshd get to all the necessary files and directories? Look
at the permissions on /etc and the files in it, as well as /bin.

Ok, looks like all your mounts are system mounts, unless you simply don't
have the permission to read the registry keys for the SYSTEM user...

Hmm, try looking for wrong directory permissions, that's my only guess at

I thought we agreed that we'd change it to be resizable to a 3.1 inch window
if there was a lot of interest in that. Then when everyone got used to that,
we'd make a 3.2 inch window available. We'd time these carefully at six month
intervals so as not to alarm anyone.

Then by 2010 we'd have something like a 4.4 inch window available.

"A 4.4 inch window should be enough for anyone."

And you can quote me on that.

Yes, it does. The version of the installer currently distributed off the
main Cygwin web site (v2.416) is non-resizeable and will forever stay that

There is one. In the "Categories" view, click on "Default" next to the
"All" category and wait a bit for it to change to "Install". That'll grab
everything, including the kitchen sink.

Hello,

  Couple of comments on the installer:

  - Does it have to be non-resizable? It's REALLY a
pain to keep scrolling left-right-left-right in a
3-inch window

  - Why isn't there an option to "get it all?" It's
REALLY a pain to have to select each and every package
.. compounded by the fact that you can't read the
entire package name without scrolling
left-right-left-right all day

   Does the installer really have to be this

Re: Perl CPAN module help

2003-11-13 Thread Doug VanLeuven
Brian Dessent wrote:

How do you list modules already installed?

There's no definitive way to do this. If you just want to see if you
have the Foo::Bar module, you can use "perl -MFoo::Bar -e 1" and if you
get an error then you need to install Foo::Bar.
You can also try the following script which uses the ExtUtils::Installed
module, but I have found that its output is sometimes misleading, in
that it will not display base (stock included) modules. And I'm not
sure if it knows about modules that are installed through means other
than CPAN (e.g. through your distro's package manager.)
I've been doing something similar.
Really it's been so long now, I forget it's origins or much of anything
about the why or how of it other than it's a comprehensive listing
that lets me know what I have & the status of the versions.
#!/usr/bin/perl

use CPAN;
# list all modules on my disk and note the newer versions
for $mod (CPAN::Shell->expand("Module","/./")){
next unless $mod->inst_file;
# here only when installed
if ($mod->inst_version eq "undef") {
printf "%s :No VERSION\n", $mod->id;
}
elsif ($mod->uptodate){
printf "%s %s\n", $mod->id, $mod->inst_version
}
else {
# here when not up to date
printf "%s %s, NEW VERSION=%s\n",
$mod->id, $mod->inst_version, $mod->cpan_version;

I've fought this for awhile now. I can't figure it out. I copied the script
to a linux machine and it works flawlessly, same rsync server. The command
that is the root of all evil (my problem, in cygwin) :

/usr/bin/rsync -qaz --partial --delete --timeout=4 \
rsync://server.xyz.com/o/test/ /cygdrive/d/remote/backup.current/o/

[ANNOUNCEMENT] New package: d-1.2.0-1

2003-11-13 Thread Yaakov Selkowitz
The package 'd' is now available with the Cygwin distribution.

'd' is an alternative to 'ls', which shows colorized, verbose file information by
default. There are several differences between 'd' and 'ls', including:

 * fully customizable through d.conf file (see /usr/share/doc/d-1.2.0/d.conf.example
for instructions)
 * option to list directories first (ON by default)
 * line space optimization
 * summary line listing number of files and total size
 * colorization ON by default

KNOWN ISSUE:

'd' may not respect your time zone settings, instead showing timestamps in GMT. This
is a problem with the upstream code, and I've been working with the author to fix
this. I hope that there will be a new version containing a fix to this very soon.

Questions on d, as always, should be posted to the cygwin mailing list, preferably
with some mention of 'd' in the header. Enjoy!

GENERIC INFORMATION:

INSTALLATION:
=
To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Save it and run setup, answer the questions and pick up
'd' from the 'Utils' category. This package includes the executable and all
documentation.

DOWNLOAD:
=
Note that downloads from sources.redhat.com (aka cygwin.com) aren't
allowed due to bandwidth limitations. This means that you will need
to find a mirror which has this update.

These mirrors already got the package, the others will probably have
the latest version of this package fairly soon:

In the US,
   ftp://planetmirror.com/pub/cygwin/ and
   ftp://mirrors.rcn.net/mirrors/sources.redhat.com/cygwin/
have reliable high bandwidth connections.

QUESTIONS:
==
If you want to make a point or ask a question the Cygwin mailing
list is the appropriate place.

No, that will work. I'd say that hasn't been done though.

I didn't create the hint, the gcc maintainer did. I was just describing
how it should work for minmal user confusion.

I didn't think version specific dependencies would be needed here. I'm
obviously not well versed in setup, but I thought that replacing the old
monolithic gcc package with an empty one and ajdusting that empty one's
dependencies to require the new equivalent packages would have done the
trick. I guess I was wrong here?

What did you put in the setup.hint that makes you think setup would do
version specific dependencies for the *old version* ?

Setup will do per-version dependencies, but it does so *for the target
version*.

Logically, I'd say all that were in the previous monolithic package, and
none that were not. That's easy.

using rsync in a sceduled script

2003-11-13 Thread Brendon Baumgartner
I have a very odd problem.

I'm using rsync 2.5.6 in a bash script that is scheduled to run using
windows XP scheduler.

Rsync works perfectly everytime from the command line, but sometimes after
the rsync operation completes when it is run using a script/scheduler, I get
this error and rsync sits running (hung) till I manually kill it.

rsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at /tmp/rsync-2.5.6/main.c(1045)

I logged stdout and stderr from the script, and here is what it looks like:
receiving file list ... done
wrote 97 bytes  read 1569 bytes  175.37 bytes/sec
total size is 1441861 speedup is 865.46
rsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at /tmp/rsync-2.5.6/main.c(1045)

Is it a bug? Is it me?

I faced the same problem. Upgrading from the old monolithic gcc to the
new separate front end packaged ones only gave me gcc-c. I had to
separately select gcc-c++.

I'm not sure whether this can be classified as a setup dependency bug,
since you always face this kind of problem when you split up a
monolithic package into separate smaller ones. Which one(s) do you
classifiy as the default successor(s)?

Well, the "partial" view tells you what would be updated/installed based
on your selections. The "default" selection means to only update what you
already have. Since you didn't already have gcc-g++, it obviously
wouldn't show up there.

However, if you already had the old monolithic gcc package when updating
to the new separate front end packages, then it is a setup/gcc dependency
bug and you should have gotten gcc-g++.

Thanks, Brian. Your suggestion to look for gcc-g++ pointed me at the answer.

I didn't realize that the backends for GCC don't show up in the "partial" view of
Cygwin Setup, only the "Not Installed" view.

I installed gcc-g++ and all is well.

#!/usr/bin/perl

use ExtUtils::Installed;
my $instmod = ExtUtils::Installed->new();
foreach my $module ($instmod->modules()) {
my $version = $instmod->version($module) || "???";
   print "$module -- $version\n";
}

cc1plus.exe not included in GCC 3.3.1-3?

2003-11-13 Thread Brian P Kasper

Folks --

I apologize deeply if this has already been fixed, but I see nothing about it in the
Cygwin list archives or the main Cygwin web page, and there isn't a later version of
gcc-3.3.1 on mirrors.rcn.net yet. I had to unsubscribe from this list for a while to
keep my email S/N down, so if this has been fixed in the last few days I missed that.

cc1plus.exe appears to be missing from gcc 3.3.1-3. I'd been running 3.2-3, and all
was well. I upgraded to 3.3.1-3 and began experiencing the "cannot exec `cc1plus'
error. I downgraded to 3.2 and the problem ceased. At the end of this message I've
attached the output of two compile attempts, the first with 3.2 and the second with
3.3.1.

REWIND on stdin in g77 3.3.1

2003-11-13 Thread pmunger . hmr
After upgrading to g77 3.3.1 from g77 3.2, some of the code I was running
sucessfully before was not running anymore on a windows 2000 workstation.
After investigation, I found that the problem seemed to be when performing
REWINDs on stdin (unit 5).

To illustrate this, I created a simple fortran program test.f:

  CHARACTER*1 LINE(80)

 10   FORMAT(80A1)

  READ(5,10)LINE
  WRITE(6,10)LINE

  READ(5,10)LINE
  WRITE(6,10)LINE

  REWIND(5)

  READ(5,10)LINE
  WRITE(6,10)LINE

  READ(5,10)LINE
  WRITE(6,10)LINE

  END

I also created an input file, test.inp:
line 1
line 2
line 3
line 4

When compiling with g77 3.3.1, and running with "test.exe < test.inp" from
a cmd window the output is:
line 1
line 2
line 3
line 4

With g77 3.2, the output is what one should expect:
line 1
line 2
line 1
line 2

It seems that the REWIND statement has no effect in the 3.3.1 version. I
tried the same with the two versions of g77 on linux and both give the
correct result.

I would appreciate if someone could give me some insight on what is going
on here ...

Regards,

Patrice

[ANNOUNCEMENT] Update: opengl-1.1.0-7

2003-11-13 Thread Andre Bleau
I've updated the OpenGL package to version 1.1.0-7 .

Excerpts from the README:

What has changed since opengl-1.1.0-6
-

gl.h and glu.h have been withdrawn from the package as they are now part of
the w32api package. The w32api package is now required.

GLUT has been upgraded from 3.7.3 to 3.7.6 . Man pages are now included in
usr/share/man/man3 .

GLUI and GLUIX are now compiled for use with g++ 3.3.1 .

Documentation has been moved to usr/share/doc/opengl-1.1.0 .

Examples are provided in usr/share/doc/opengl-1.1.0/GLUIexamples and
usr/share/doc/opengl-1.1.0/GLUTexamples .

When will there be an opengl-1.2 or opengl-1.3 or opengl-1.4 package ?
--

When Microsoft will provide an opengl32.dll for OpenGL version
1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 . Sadly, that probably means never. But if you have up-to-
date graphic-card drivers that support those version of OpenGL, you can load
1.2+ functions dynamically. Look in an OpenGL forum, such as:

n=3Dtopics&forum=3DOpenGL+coding:+beginners&number=3D2&DaysPrune=3D20&LastLo=

to learn how to do it.

* WARNING *

If you are using g++ 2.95.x to build GLUI and/or GLUIX applications, you=20
should stay with version 1.1.0-6 of the OpenGL package.

The GLUI and GLUIX libs can only be used with g++ 3.3 .

Empty /usr/local/bin in Release 1.5.5-1

Hi,

I just installed Cygwin 1.5.5-1 on my Windows XP machine. I
cannot find vi or gcc. This is a partial output from `echo $PATH`.

/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS/system32:
/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS:/cygdrive/c/WINDOWS/System32/Wbem:
/cygdrive/c/Program Files/SSH Communications Security/SSH Secure Shell

There is nothing in /usr/local/bin. Is there something that I should
have done during setup that I did not do?

How do I change to C or T shell?

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Bernhard,

The local win32 gtk can be used to compile *local* applications using
GTK+. To open a remote Mozilla (or any X app) you still need an X server.

I agree in principle (though the patch makes the script easier to read).

The offending command line cut and pasted from the makefile log looks like:

TARGET_CPU_DEFAULT="" HEADERS="config/i386/i386.h config/i386/unix.h
config/i386/bsd.h config/i386/gas.h config/dbxcoff.h
config/i386/cygming.h config/i386/cygwin.h defaults.h" DEFINES=""
/bin/sh ../../gcc-snapshot/gcc/mkconfig.sh tm.h

If I just run this command in the GCC directory then tm.h is built
correctly.

If this file is created via a "make tm.h", "make bootstrap", or just
plain "make", then tm.h is also built correctly.

However, if this file is created via a "make restrap" then the lines
between the cat <
...
EOF
get uncermoniously dropped on the floor as can be seen in this diff
comparsion.

$ diff -u tm.h tm.h.borked
--- tm.h2003-11-13 13:46:44.756119500 -0500

-# include "insn-flags.h"

 #endif /* GCC_TM_H */
The only real difference I can see is that "make restrap" adds one
additional layer of make recurrsion since it calls "make bootstrap"
which in turns the calls "make stage1" and so forth.

I tried to hack the makefile to add an strace to before the $(SHELL)
mkconfig.sh command, but that has the side effect of causing the script
to work again :).

The script also works fine if SHELL=/bin/bash.

So the basic answer to your question is I don't know exactly why /bin/sh
is borked. I am open to suggestions for checking though.

RE: 1.5.5-1 command substitution hangs (0% cpu) on XP

2003-11-13 Thread Geoffrey Ruscoe
I'm sorry I posted this problem a second time (under this new name) ... I
thought my first attempt was too shotty and was probably misnamed. I was
trying to continue the discussion that I had found that most closely matched
(blah, blah).

So I thought about trying an older version of cygwin to see if that would
cure what ails (should be ale's as in free beer in my case) me, but I
couldn't find snap shots of an older release (maybe 1.3.22-1). Is there a
way to get this or would this not be helpful.

Really, if anybody has any hints or things for me to try it would be very
greatly appreciated. It seems so strange that I would be the only one
having this problem even after the new version of bash.

Thanks again,
Geoff

Peter,

Thanks for the pointer. Both drives are DDS4 so both support density
0x25 (DDS3) which is the density of the tapes. Still no luck but am
continuing in my search for a resolution.

gtk for cygwin

2003-11-13 Thread Bernhard Windisch
I installed cygwin on my Windows XP laptop to access my linux workstation
via ssh -X. Unfortunately, when I try to open a x-window application on the
remote machine, I get the error Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display on my
laptop, if I am not running the X-server under cygwin.
I installed the gtk2-Version for cygwin which is recommended in the mailing
list archives. (So gtk2-win32 and gtk-engines-win32)

If anyone has an idea how to handle that problem or if it is not possible to
open mozilla for example without starting the cygwin X-server, please let me
know,

thanks, Bernhard

Re: Problem with Xemacs, cygwin and maybe XP

2003-11-13 Thread Yadin Y. Goldschmidt
This faq is not clear enough and should be updated. It does not give the
location of the snapshots: http://cygwin.com/snapshots/
which can also be accessed from the cygwin main page, see on the very left
the item Snapshots and click on it. Then you have to
download the file cygwin1-.dll.bz2 and install it by bunzip2 first
and then
changing its name to cygwin1.dll and replacing the old cygwin1.dll, this is
usually enough in
spite of what the faq says.

As should libuser32.a. There is no reason to include it on the command line.

You don't, sorry.  .

Alternatively, you can download everything you need to another computer
(one with a mouse), edit setup.ini to move all the packages to the Base
category, and do a local install from a shared directory (or a CD, search
the archives for caveats) by simply accepting the default selections on
your machine.

 Not that I see this to be important;

 1. I see CRLF line endings.

$ od -a Makefile.txt
...
0011340   :  sp   a   l   l  sp  sp  cr  nl  cr  nl   u   n   i   n   s
0011360   t   a   l   l   :  sp  sp  cr  nl  cr  nl  cr  nl
0011375

 2. No double linefeeds in 'less' nor
in the old Win-GUI editor I use (name: PFE).

Hi All!

I do not have a mouse attached to my computer.

After entering installation setup, I cannot choose
components to be installed ie. I can toggle between
the options on top and bottom of the window, but not
into the items list. How do I select items for
installation using keyboard?

Thx in advance.

Problems using WIN32 api

2003-11-13 Thread zze-BDE balg011 VAUCHER Laurent DvSI/SIReS/GRE
  I'm trying to understand how to build an application using
both Cygwin and (some) WIN32 APIs and I stumbled into a
problem using exactly whet the FAQ says (even if it says
it is not up to date).

 Example program : main.c
--
#include
int main(int arc, char *argv[])
{
  BOOL sm;
  /* The following function is in USER32.DLL */
  SystemParametersInfo(SPI_GETFONTSMOOTHING, 0, &sm, 0);
  return 0;
}

I tried compiling like the FAQ says I should :
> gcc -o main main.c -luser32

All I get is "undefined reference to [EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Since it seems that the 'interface' libs live in /usr/lib/w32api,
I tried to add -L/usr/lib/w32api, but the result is the same.

In last resort, I did this awful thing :
> gcc -o main main.c /usr/lib/w32api/libuser32.a

which works !! But I'm still not satisfied with it, because
it does not work on another libtool based project (pango),
saying that I'm trying to include a static lib when building
a dynamic one. So libtool refuses to pass things like
/usr/lib/w32api/libuser32.a down to gcc and I need to
repair the gcc command line manually.

And I've got some more questions :
- are the /usr/lib/w32api/libXXX.a real static libs (with code)
   or only interface to the system DLLs?
- what's the difference with libXXX.dll.a?
- why is -luser32 or -lgdi32 not honored?
- would it be difficult to create .la files for those
   Win32 api, so that libtool would be nice with them?
- is someone interested in a glib/gtk+ cygwin package
   (not a native Win32 one)?

No, your message wasn't overlooked. I recall investigating the problem and at
the time, was not able to duplicate it. I should have some time here in the

The attachment you sent has a lot of blank lines in it (at least when I look
at it on my Linux box) - is that normal? (i.e. one in two lines is blank).

Other than that, I see nothing suspicious in the file..

Could you provide a minimal testcase that reproduces the behaviour?

I don't know much about nmake, but the only reason I see for it failing under
Bash and not under cmd would be a difference in environment.. A minimal test

[ANNOUNCEMENT] Updated: lftp-2.6.8-3

2003-11-13 Thread Mark Blackburn
I've updated lftp to latest upstream version 2.6.8.

I've also fixed a buggy postinstall script that was causing setup to
lock up.

lftp is an ftp client that supports many protocols: ftp, ftps, http,
https, hftp, fish and file. lftp also has readline support (ie
tab-completion and history like bash and ncftp). Using lftp with the
fish protocol makes it a convenient substitute for sftp.

Here's a list of changes since 2.6.6 (from the lftp homepage):

#  Version 2.6.8 - 2003-10-10

Some bugs fixed, some new features added.

 * better multibyte character support.
 * experimental ftp protocol command PRET added; new setting
   ftp:use-pret.
 * unblock SIGCLD signal when running external programs.
 * fixed included readline compilation.
 * fixed compilation with socks.

# Version 2.6.7 - 2003-08-29

Some bugs fixed, some new features added.

 * new settings ftp:use-size, ftp:use-mdtm, ftp:use-telnet-iac.
 * optimized writing to local disk by increasing write size.
 * fixed size catching from 150 ftp server reply.
 * correct exit code of commands help, lftp (reported by trancefx).
 * hftp improvements from Johannes Zellner: CSM proxy support;
   colored listings; do not print hour:minute if not known.
 * translations updated.
 * fixed a bug with saving last working directory for a site.
 * fixed a bug with FXP of zero sized files.
 * fixed a bug happening when a 5xx reply is received after QUIT is
   sent.
 * readline updated to version 4.3.

Mark Blackburn, lftp maintainer.

The first thing to do when a command behaves differently
than expected is to see what it is, so try "which tail".
Is it /usr/bin/tail?

have posted to the list. When I have tried to reply to a thread, the
reply address has not been that of the list but the individual whose
message I am looking at.

In the headers for the messages from this list, there doesn't apear to
be any `Reply-to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]' which I would expect, allowing
replies to be aimed at the list by default.

Adding the Reply-to header would be helpful.

Regards,
Jeremy

lpr -l misbehaviour

2003-11-13 Thread Rodrigo Medina
Hello all!
 I have just installed cygutils-1.2.2
'lpr -l' is still repeating the last byte of a file as I have
explained some months ago in the message:
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2003-08/msg00451.html

As I don't see any mention about this problem in cygutils TODO,
I am sending this message in case my previous one was overlooked.

Please refer to attachment. But line 147 seems to the end of the file...
The Makefile is generated by qmake 1.06c.

here a the command history:
$ qmake
$ nmake clean
$ nmake

The implementation files were compiled but the link command (or before)
failed with fatal error U1054.

If i open then a cmd and switch to the directory and type nmake, the lib
will be linked.

I can reproduce this on another machine.

My compilation works fine with a normal command shell.

I diffed the generated Makefiles (under bash and cmd) and the only
difference is the uppercase of the c: drive-letter.

I have built MPICH on my cygwin installation. The building process was
straight forward. One thing to lookout for is that in MPICH, there are
many files that case sensitive (e.g. mpicc and mpiCC). Make sure you build
MPICH in a directory that is mounted with the "managed" option. You'll
also need rsh or sshd running to use it.

It works just fine on one machine, but I haven't tested it on multiple
machines. I only use it for code development on my laptop when I'm away
from the office.

You're giving us very little (way too little) information to help you in any
way. Have a look at http://cygwin.com/problems.html and perhaps post things
like:
* the Makefile (especially line 147 seems to be of interest)
* a step-by-step description of what you're doing
* whether it works when invoking nmake from the Windows command shell (will
  help to find out whether it has anything to do with Bash, Cygwin, etc.)

bash v2.05b.0 + nmake v7.10.3077 problem

2003-11-13 Thread Lars Monecke
Hello,

I updated to msvc 7.1. Before I used msvc 6.0 with no problems in compiling
from bash. Now nmake has problems to compile in the bash enviroment.
The following error occured:
Makefile(147) : fatal error U1054: cannot create inline file ''

Has anyone the same problems?
Is it a problem of nmake or my makefile (i use qmake to generate my
makefiles)?

Thanks in advance, Lars.

Building shared objects

2003-11-13 Thread Stephane ALBIN
Hi all,

I currently use cygwin 1.3.4.
I'm trying to build a shared object which uses another lib.

My object is named : mf.o
It uses the lib name : libHt.so
And for my test, they are in the same directory.

libHt.so has been generated by :
gcc -shared -o libHt.so Ht.o

If I do :
gcc -shared libHt.so mf.o -o libmf.so

I get this message :
libHt.so: fake: multiple definition of '___do_frame_init'
libHt.so: fake: multiple definition of '___do_frame_fini'
libHt.so: fake: multiple definition of '___EH_FRAME_BEGIN__'

I don't think it is a gcc problem because it works correctly on Linux with gcc 3.3.1.

If I link objects directly, it works :
gcc -shared -o libmf.so mf.o Ht.o
But I don't want this feature.

Any help is welcome.
TIA.
Stéphane Albin.

See http://cygwin.com/setup.html to learn how to contribute packages
to the Cygwin distribution and to act as package maintainer.

Re: 1.5.5: sshd problem

2003-11-13 Thread John Pye
Hi everyone

I'm still having problems with my SSH configuration. I have followed all
the steps give by Corinna earlier, plus some more, but it hasn't changed
anything. Does anyone have any more tips or suggestions?

Perhaps other files which could secretly be snarling up my SSH config,
other than ~/.ssh/*, /etc/ssh* ? The only thing I can think of is that
there are two dns entries for my machine, via dyndns.org - could that
have anything to do with it?

Here are the steps I tried for fixing the problem:

- Deinstall the sshd service: cygrunsrv -R sshd
- Edit /etc/passwd and remove the sshd account entry.
- Remove the sshd account: net user sshd /delete
- If you didn't change much in your /etc/ssh_config and /etc/ssdh_config
 files, remove them.

I deleted all those files, as well as /etc/ssh_host* and ~/.ssh

I ran a complete 'reinstall' of cygwin using the setup.exe program
(selecting 'reinstall' from the root node)

I restarted my machine

- Run ssh-host-config again.
- Run ssh-user-config for your own (and each other used) account.

I just did this for my own account, as well as for the one other account
I want to be using for SSH.

- Restart the sshd service.

I still get the error as shown

Each time there are two more lines. What's that first line then? I
delete the sshd.log file, I end the SSHD service, I look at the file
which has again been created (sshd.log). It's empty. I start the service
again, and I see it's still empty. The first line appears after I make
my first login attempt, but it doesn't appear on subsequent login attempts.

I am going to have to do a total remove-and-reinstall of cygwin?

May the merciful hacker who comes to my aid be blessed with infinite
vanilla milkshakes, or something.

Hey Cygwin Users,
I have a problem when I rlogin to other *NIX hosts from the native xterm

'vi' some file, the vi editor just scrolls past the top most lines of the
file and takes me to a point somewhere in the middle. Evening trying to
position explicitly to the first line :1, does not work. I suppose this has
something to do with the X Server configuration ?. I've tried searching
through the mail archives, but don't see anyone having a problem as close to
as mine. Any help or pointers will get me moving with my work. I have been
reluctant to using any other propritery emulation software, till now as I
really want to use Cygwin

This is just a guess, but: Does the reading tape drive support
the density you used when the tape was written? I remember seeing
strange error messages when I had written a tape with density 35
and tried to read it with an older tape drive which only supported
densities up to 20.

Apache SSL, Apache Tool Box under Cygwin...

2003-11-13 Thread Jason Boerner
When doing a fresh build under CYGWIN (i686) (install.sh -c) I do not
receive any error messages until mm & ssl are built.
Note that I can build mm fine by just doing a make; make install so I'm
sure that it's not the library. Is there a command line option I need to
set in order to delay the linking (and hence, the search for the
symbols) OR an environment variable that I need to set?

First Off:
I did notice that while install.sh is running that the following message
shows up.
[+] Configured the MM library...
libtool: link: warning: undefined symbols not allowed in i686-pc-cygwin
shared libraries

Given what follows, I think that this is not the problem and the that
the build environment is whacked. But how to fix it?

So I've triple checked /usr/lib/ , LIBDIR etc and the libs look fine.

It would seem that my build environment is NOT picking up LIBDIR which I
have worked around by changing the dllwrap command from:
$ dllwrap --export-all -o libhttpd.dll buildmark.o modules.o
modules/standard/libstandard.a modules/ssl/libssl.a main/libmain.a
./os/cygwin/libos.a ap/libap.a regex/libregex.a -lcrypt -lgdbm

to:
$ dllwrap --export-all -o libhttpd.dll buildmark.o modules.o
./modules/standard/libstandard.a /usr/lib/libssl.a ./main/libmain.a
./os/cygwin/libos.a ./ap/libap.a ./regex/libregex.a
/usr/local/lib/libmm.a -lcrypt -lgdbm

Which creats the following output.
dllwrap: no export definition file provided.
Creating one, but that may not be what you want
modules.o(.data+0x4c):modules.c: undefined reference to `_ssl_module'
modules.o(.data+0xac):modules.c: undefined reference to `_ssl_module'
Info: resolving _optarg by linking to __imp__optarg (auto-import)
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
dllwrap: gcc exited with status 1
SO CLOSE! Does anyone know how to work around this?

Thanks

That's strange. Which module is not found? Since you have
installed it, where is it? What is your @INC? You can see your
@INC with

   perl -wle 'print for @INC'

>With HTML::Parser it couldn't run gcc because it was not found.

Then you must install it. :-) Run setup.exe and install gcc.

   perldoc cpan

To fire up the cpan shell, just type, at the cygwin shell

   cpan

I found it to be quite straight forward. Please be specific and
tell where you run into problems.

>Are others having problems and how did you fix them.

We'll take one thing at a time. I've used the cpan shell a lot,
but I need some more information about where you run into
problems.

I have never used "perldoc perllocal" to see what modules I have
installed, so at this point I can't tell you what is wrong.

RE: cygwin too slow

2003-11-13 Thread koorapati, koundinya
Thanks to all who replied - Brian, Reid, Eric Rolf, kevin, shankar ; Sorry
if I have left out any, I'm glad to say that I was able to find out why and
that solved my problem. It was with the HOME variable which was by default
set to /cygwindrive/h or something like that. Being a total newbie on
Windows, I did not bother to touch this. Not I have learnt how to set
environment variables in Windows and have set it to c:\ and the problem I
was seeing disappeared. I promise to read the FAQ/Documentation do some
googling etc  :)

Thanks again !

Koundinya

He's sort of right in that often, there's a mysterious wait of a second
or two, even on a completely unloaded system, before the process starts
running.

I suspect it has something to do with our flaky network (we're in a
workgroup without a primary WINS server or a domain controller). Even if
there are no network drives in the path, I suspect that things like
looking up the local host name will also be slow if there are subtle
network problems like this, and can cause this delay on startup..
