Bug#254113: New version of ttf-freefont to test

It makes the font ugly to the point of unreadability when used as a
primary font, such as for a web browser. That's how many of us are using
it from prior experience with this problem. It's bad enough that the font
is basically unusable for me as long as it has this bug, which is the
criteria for grave.

This bug was fixed and stayed fixed for a long time, but was just
reintroduced in the upload of a new version.

Hmmm, doing so gives me what is probably this line spacing problem. A
random text switched from DejavuSans back/forth FreeSans has a nearly
doubled line spacing, yes.

So, I can only confirm this problem. However I really fail to see why
this should be release critical. One may certainly tag it as
"important" but I somewhat object to it being "grave".

This looks like a dupe of #309507. Which you reported. And which got
fixed.

Bug#346907: marked as done (libast: FTBFS: build-depends on removed xlibs-dev)

Package: libast
Version: 0.6-0pre2003010606.1
Severity: serious

Hello,

This is a serious bug filed against your package because it
build-depends on xlibs-dev, which as announced in [1] a while ago, is
no longer available in sid. This makes your package fail to build from
  source.

[1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/11/msg00022.html

To fix this bug, you need to update your build-dependencies and
substitute xlibs-dev for the list of individual X development
libraries that your package needs to be built. You can find detailed
information about how to do that in the DependsXlibsDev wiki page [2].

[2] http://wiki.debian.org/DependsXlibsDev

As indicated by the Release Team [3], the full transition from XFree86
to Xorg is a release blocker for Etch, which means that Etch will not
be released until this bug is fixed (or your package removed from
testing). So, please, try to fix in a timely manner.

[3] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/10/msg4.html

The number of affected packages by the xlibs-dev transition is huge,
so if you feel like helping with patches or uploads, feel free to
follow the instructions contained in the wiki page above. A list of
affected packages can be found here [4].

[4] http://people.debian.org/~adeodato/release-usertag/transition-xlibs-dev

Finally, if there's a strong reason for which your package should not
be NMUed, please note so in this bug report. Prospective NMUers will
read your reasoning, and will decide if it's strong enough to delay
  their upload.

  Thanks for your collaboration!

Ok, then passing the bug down the line to passwd.

In that case, I suspect that this is an issue related to waldi's chroots not
having /etc/shadow, which I seem to remember is the case.

Bug#352905: gnomesword: Crashes immediately on startup

2006-02-14 Thread Peter Chubb
Package: gnomesword
Version: 2.1.5-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I type:
   gnomesword2

I see:

Initiating GNOME session handler

and then a popup that says
The Application "gnomesword2" has quit unexpectedly.
with two buttons: Restart Application and Close.

I ran gnomesword2 under gdb:

(gdb) bt
#0 0xb6f02cd3 in strlen () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6
#1 0xb6f029c5 in strdup () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6
#2 0x0808ddff in main_init_backend ()
#3 0x08083716 in main ()

I suspect there's a problem in my installation; but in any case, there
shouldn't be a segfault here.

(and, btw, I consider the list of dependencies for gnomesword excessive. Why
is all that sound stuff in there?)

Bug#323706: [Fwd: Remotely exploitable gaim security issues]

2006-02-14 Thread Ari Pollak

package gaim

tags 323706 +patch
thanks
--- Begin Message ---
Hi Security Team,

There is a planned release of gaim 1.5.0 this Thursday. It will fix
three security issues:

1. CAN-2005-2370
The gadu-gadu protocol plugin. There was a memory alignment bug that
apparently can not be exploited on x86. You can grab a patch for Gaim from:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/gaim/gaim/src/protocols/gg/libgg.c?r1=1.21.2.1&r2=1.21.2.2
This has already been publicized in libgadu, but gaim is not dynamically
linking against the library so it still has to be updated manually.

2. CAN-2005-2102 gaim UTF8 filename crash
There is an oscar remotely exploitable crash bug. A remote AIM or ICQ user
would need to compile their own client and send a specially crafted IM
(basically an IM containing lots of %s, and flag it as an away message). It
results in a buffer overflow. A fix for this has not yet been commited to
CVS, and the issue should be fairly unknown. A patch for this is
attached. Hopefully it will apply against gaim 1.2.1 with minimal
modifications.

3. CAN-2005-2103 gaim away message buffer overflow
Daniel Atallah fixed a crash in oscar dealing with invalid file names. It
is remotely exploitable by anyone sending you a file with a non-utf8
filename.
It sometimes causes a crash in pango. It might be depending on the version
of gtk you're using. And seems to crash Linux machines less than Windows
machines (if ever). This has not yet been fixed in CVS, but it IS in
the wild and you can get a client from http://www.sevenz.net/ to exploit
it. A patch is attached. Again, hopefully it will apply against gaim 1.2.1.

Debbugs-CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello. I will be requesting removal of xerces25 shortly. Please
upload a new version of anon-proxy that build depends upon
libxerces27-dev instead of libxerces25-dev. Hopefully, this should be
the only change required to get the new version of xerces. As of this
writing, xerces27 is built on all architectures except arm and built
and installed on all architectures except hppa. (Okay, it's in
Dep-wait on m68k, but that's not impacting testing at the moment.)
You probably will want to check its status:

http://people.debian.org/~igloo/status.php?packages=xerces27

and wait until it's "Installed" on all architectures before uploading
so your package doesn't get stuck in dep-wait unnecessarily.

2006-02-14 Thread Ari Pollak
The fix as of now, if you're running sarge, is basically to get the gaim
backport from backports.org. The security team was aware of this issue
months ago, so it's up to them to release fixed packages.

Bug#352902: CVE-2006-0481: PNG_Set_Strip_Alpha Buffer Overflow

2006-02-14 Thread Geoff Crompton
Package: libpng
Severity: grave
Justification: user security hole

As seen on http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/16626, there is a buffer overflow.

Redhat have a patch available at:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=179455

However security focus lists versions 1.0.16, 1.0.17, 1.2.6, and 1.2.7 as
vulnerable, but I see we've got higher versions in sarge.
But I'm unsure if 1.2.8rel-1 is a pre-release version of 1.2.8, and hence
whether it will have this fix or not.

Debian is applying human judgement when interpreting a set of guidelines.
Only the OSI has ever claimed that the DFSG are a suitable set of rules that
can be applied literally and mechanically to licenses to determine their
freeness; Debian never has.

I admit that the log excerpt I provided was rather confusing and did
not contain the pertinent information. The issue I was aiming to
describe is unrelated to LVM as far as I can determine. That vgchange
not found error occurs in both successful and unsuccessful boots.

I've attached two separate logs - one from a successful boot and one
from a failed boot. It hope it is clear that these two logs show sata,
megaraid, aic79xx and USB modules scanning for devices in a different
order. This means that on some boots the boot disk on megaraid is sda
and on others it's sdb. I see no reason why this randomness could not
also occur between SATA, and on/off board SCSI devices but don't have
the hardware available to prove this at the moment.

Package: gnuboy

Bug#254113: New version of ttf-freefont to test

2006-02-14 Thread Jan Willem Stumpel
Josh Triplett wrote:

Interesting .. I have spacing problems (line spacing, and, with Freemono
when printed by means of Mozilla/xprint, also character spacing) both
with this version and with the current version in Sid. But the November
2005 version (ttf-freefont_20051102-2_all.deb) is OK.

How did you test it?

[IMHO the most reliable way to test the 'line spacing' issue is to use

Yes, please provide the tiff file; feel free to mail it as an
attachment to the bug report if it's small or to give me a URL to grab
it from if it's large. Does this problem still happen with 3.8.0-2 in
sid? There's at least one segfault patch available from upstream that
I was thinking of uploading after 3.8.0-2 transitions to etch in a
couple of days.

Quite simple: I want to be able to set up a server, putting "main" into
sources.list and not having to wonder wether I just submitted myself
under the jurisdiction of Kiribati (taken from the member list of the
United Nations by pure coincidence). And this can happen if choice of
venue clauses are allowed in main.
And please stop telling me that I don't like the CDDL; this is not about
the CDDL which can be used without a choice of venue clause.

In any case, this is totally unrelated to star, CDDL and choice of
venue. Who was the first one to use the word "FUD" in this discussion?

> Let us wait what whether Debian will accept a GPLv3 licensed project..

Why, do you plan to relicense star under GPLv3?

It will happen among devices handled by different drivers.
The solution is to use the /dev/disk/ persistent symlinks.

Well, then you obviously need to remove _all_ GPL packets as any
person could sue you anywhere in the world because of the _missing_
choice of venue.

Please don't tell me you would never travel to "Kiribati" - do you know
for shure that you will not like to visit your new mother in law (located
in Kiribati) next year?

Of course, I cannot speak about you, but looking at the recent CDDL shows that
most people who did post did not give real arguments but rather seem to be
anti CDDL.

Definitely not as long as the GPLv3 still contains the permission to
discriminate people.

I did chose CDDL for two reasons:

- Star is using source from Sun that is licensed under CDDL

- I like to have star under a more kliberate license than the GPL.

As a note:

The CDDL is a reworked MPL and I have been in heavy discussion with
Sun lawyers to make the choice of venue part modified in a way
acceptable by "joe author".

Debian currently includes MPL based packets in "main" and the MPL is definitely
less DFSG compliant than the CDDL.

>From the MPL:

11. MISCELLANEOUS.

This License represents the complete agreement concerning subject
matter hereof. If any provision of this License is held to be
unenforceable, such provision shall be reformed only to the extent
necessary to make it enforceable. This License shall be governed by
California law provisions (except to the extent applicable law, if
any, provides otherwise), excluding its conflict-of-law provisions.
With respect to disputes in which at least one party is a citizen of,
or an entity chartered or registered to do business in the United
States of America, any litigation relating to this License shall be
subject to the jurisdiction of the Federal Courts of the Northern
District of California, with venue lying in Santa Clara County,
California, with the losing party responsible for costs, including
without limitation, court costs and reasonable attorneys' fees and
expenses. The application of the United Nations Convention on
Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is expressly excluded.
Any law or regulation which provides that the language of a contract
shall be construed against the drafter shall not apply to this
 License.

As you see, all MPL programs have the choice of venue set to Santa Clara.
I believe this is completely inacceptable and I am sure that private
authors who use the MPL are not aware of this problem.

If Debian would like to remove star, then they need to remove these
packets too: http://freshmeat.net/browse/189/
Freshmeat lists 230 projects licensed under MPL.

The fact that nobody seems to start a MPL related discussion looks like
the CDDL discussion on Debian-legal has been started by some trolls who
just like to discriminate against the CDDL.

No. The wording in the CDDL is:

Any litigation relating to this License shall be subject to the
jurisdiction of the courts located in the jurisdiction and venue specified
in a notice contained within the Original Software, with the losing party
responsible for costs, including, without limitation, court costs and
  reasonable attorneys’ fees and expenses.

There is nothing in the CDDL that prevents *you* as a copyright holder
from using this clause to harrass users you don't like. Exposing our users
to this added risk in order to give copyright holders an additional legal
protection that people have been doing fine without for decades is not a
decision Debian is going to make lightly. Indeed, the list archives of
debian-legal are full of in-depth discussion of this issue over the past
year.

> Conclusion: if Debian would act this way, Debian would be anti-social and

Um, I call bullshit. There are thousands (millions?) of Free Software
contributors who have no problem licensing their code under the terms of
GPLv2 or the BSD licenses, and we have a long precedent of these software
authors largely *not* getting sued frivolously by users. In contrast,
licenses with choice of venue clauses are relatively new, and some of them
have been advanced by corporations that have a history of overt hostility
towards Free Software, so the risks to our users of being sued by copyright
holders are a complete unknown.

> Free Software is a curtesy of it's authors. If you take away all rights

You know, some of us actually contribute to Free Software because we believe
in its goals and its methods, not because we think we're doing users a
favor...

did you try to regenerate the image with latest udev 084-4
can you still reproduce it with it?
(use update-initramfs -t -u to regenerate your image)

it includes the device ordering features of udev,
they produce different error messages which are mostly harmless.
should help on your setup.

Package: mono-apache-server
Version: 1.0.5-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Seems all the mod-mono functionality is now broken, and apache returns a
code 500 (internal server error) for all of it.

So in order to find out what was going on, I started mod-mono-server by
hand, thusly:

su www-data -c '/usr/bin/mono /usr/share/dotnet/bin/mod-mono-server.exe
  --filename /tmp/.mod_mono_server --nonstop --appconfigdir
  /etc/mono-server'

I then hit the web server (http://localhost/samples) and got the
following output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/mono-server# su www-data -c '/usr/bin/mono
/usr/share/dotnet/bin/mod-mono-server.exe --filename /tmp/.mod_mono_server
--nonstop --appconfigdir /etc/mono-server'
mod-mono-server
Listening on: /tmp/.mod_mono_server
Root directory: /etc/mono-server
In ModMonoWorker.Run: mod_mono and xsp have different versions.

And yet, both mono-apache-server and mono-xsp packages are at 1.0.5-2!
However, the mono framework itself is now at 1.1.9.1.

In any case, this situation renders mod_mono completely dead, hence the
"grave" severity of this bug.

This bug is actually probably a dup of 303755, but the submitter of that
bug marked it as "normal" and didn't give any useful information.

If I am not doing business there and can still be sued *without* having
agreed to this choice of venue, than I am lost anyway -- a court there
could very well override the choice of venue clause.
A license can't protect against arbitrary jurisdictions.

Just for the record: MPL is considered non-free by most Debian
Developers (not sure about an official statement):
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/06/msg00221.html

Could you please name a package which is
a) in Debian under MPL
b) not in non-free
c) is not being worked on to get another license.

Please note that e.g. firefox is actively being worked on (in this case:
by upstream):

MPL was considered non-free even before CDDL was published. There are
some very practical matters with it (keep source code online for a
certain time) which make MPL a pain for every distributor, leaving
issues of freeness aside.

I don't mind continuing this discussion, but I suggest dropping the
@debian.org addresses from CC.

Package: x2x
Version: 1.27-8

Bug#254113: New version of ttf-freefont to test

very appreciated: thank you.

I tried to rebuild the package starting from the files on [1] and it
fails for me with the following:

./convertfonts.sh
./FreeMonoBoldOblique.sfd
./convertfonts.sh: line 11:
/testing/home/zino/temp/deb/ttf-freefont-20060126/scripts/ConvertFont:
Permission denied
[...]

which was fixed by hand with a "chmod +x scripts/ConvertFont"

> G-I people, can you also have a look at it?

I wanted to create a g-i image using the udeb you provided in place of
the tarball [2] currently used in the official iso: since it's not so
immadiate it's going to be one of the next things I'll work on.

I've created an iso [3] which oncludes _only_ the unstripped version
of the FreeSans fonts; this obviously means that some languages have
no glyphs at all.

I performed some tests using Attilio's application and Soumyadip said
the pics ([4], [5], [6]) look good for Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi; if
this is true also for the iso (and I see no reason not to be that
way), it means we can get rid of

MuktiNarrow.tgz
ttf-devanagari-fonts.tgz
ttf-punjabi-fonts.tgz

please try the iso and let us know.

Bug#352753: udev: ide-generic no longer loaded on boot

2006-02-14 Thread Frans Pop
tags + patch
thanks

Hi Marco,

We've done a debugging session today involving Otavio Salvadore (who also
saw the issue), maks and myself.

There are two possible solutions, both involving modifications in
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/udev.

1) revert inclusion of *_id scripts
Commenting out the three lines at the end of the current file lets the
   system boot again.
2) add 'copy_exec /lib/udev/ide.agent /lib/udev' at the end of the file
Apparently some _id script calls ide.agent and this makes sure
ide-generic is loaded at the correct time.

An lsmod after both boots shows ide-generic loaded after the piix driver,
AFAIK this is correct.

The second solution has our preference.
Basically ide.agent does the same as what's currently in
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-premount/ide (which could probably
be cleaned now).

The comment at the top of the ide.agent seems to imply that this whole
ide-generic issue will be fixed in 2.6.16 kernels, which would be great.

With my d-i release manager hat on, I would suggest uploading -5 with this
fix at MEDIUM urgency. I would be very unhappy with -4 in testing in the
middle of preparing for D-I Beta2. I will make sure that udev gets into
testing before the final build for Beta2.

One other thing.
With the patch applied, most errors that are shown with -3 are gone (there
were screens full of them!), but I still get 2 times the following error
on the console during a boot:
(...) exec of program /etc/initd.d/hdparm failed

IMO it would be good to suppress such messages as, in my experience, they
will only lead to unnecessary installation and bug reports.
maks suggested to re-add the "silence_exec_error" patch for Beta2 and
maybe come back to this issue after that?

Thanks,
Frans Pop

It doesn't depend on itself, the unpatched version of setup.py
modified sys.path and imported simpletal from lib/. However,
I accidently forgot to remove the import line (it just worked,
'cos I've already had simpletal installed in my sid chroot).

Thanks for pointing it out.

As long as the installer knows to do that when it writes /etc/fstab
then users won't be shocked by a system that sometimes won't boot.

Another workaround is to use yaird rather than initramfs-tools because
it only loads stuff that's necessary for boot from the initrd.

Thanks for your help.

Bug#350624: star: acceptance of CDDL is undecided

2006-02-14 Thread Joerg Schilling

Let us try to avoid generic discussions that are not related to star.

Show me the exact art of the DSFG that you believe is incompatible with
the CDDL and explain why exactly you believe that this part of the DSFG
is incompatible with the CDDL.

As it seems that most people do not know the text, here are the links:

The CDDL has been approved to be compatible with this:

http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php

The DSFG is here:

http://www.us.debian.org/social_contract

If you compare the both texts, you will find that the CDDL has been
verified against a text that is gradually more strict than the DSFG.

Note that in case Debian tries to enforce rules that are not written down
properly, it looks as if Debian is acting with arbitrariness.

The first solution is obviously unacceptable because supporting
persistent disk names in the initramfs has been a planned feature since
they were designed.
The second solution means that I would need to add to my package code
whose purpose I do not understand (which systems do need ide-generic,
when and why?). Also, I cannot see any way for the *_id programs
called by persistent.rules to prevent init-premount/ide, which contains
an unconditional "modprobe -q ide-generic", to load the module.
This is too much close to cargo cult programming for my taste.

> Basically ide.agent does the same as what's currently in

What happens if you rearrange your initramfs to run this script before
the udev script instead of later? If you are right and ide-generic needs
to be loaded before other drivers (which is totally broken and is not
something udev would support) then this would be the correct fix.

> The comment at the top of the ide.agent seems to imply that this whole
> ide-generic issue will be fixed in 2.6.16 kernels, which would be great.
No. It means that in 2.6.16 the ide subsystem will generate requests for
the high level drivers and that they will provide proper module aliases
to allow autoloading them with $MODALIAS, but I doubt that the
ide-generic module will.
And if all uevents will have a $MODALIAS variable then ide.agent will
never be run and ide-generic will not be loaded again.
BTW, I would really really like to see the content of an uevent which
causes ide-generic to be loaded.

When is the deadline for entering testing for Beta2?

I fully agree, but I need to find a clever way to do it. Can you suggest
ways for udevd to detect if it's running in an initramfs?
Like checking for a specific environment variable or a file.

Maybe, but I'd rather to fix this once for good instead of hiding all
errors again.

"fakeroot debian/rules binary" (or debuild binary) fails as the
binary-arch target does not depend on the build target.

Trivial patch: add this dependency!

What is your intention with this attempt?

The current release is 1.5a70 and a71 will come up shortly.

If Debian really goes this way, it seems that I need to make public that
Debian is anti-social and supporting people who like to infringe the copyright
and license.

Note: the CDDL clearly is a license that follows the rules from Debian.

If you believe otherwise, tell me exactly _what_ you don't like and _why_ the
CDDL is not following Debians rules.

Note-2: While the CDDL is OK, the current GPLv3 draft is definitely
allowing discriminaton and for this reason not DSFG compliant.

Let us wait what whether Debian will accept a GPLv3 licensed project..

Bug#352243: Will be solved soon (libsysfs2 on its way)

2006-02-14 Thread Santiago Garcia Mantinan
Sorry about this, I just thought libsysfs2 was already on unstable and that
I was late about the libsysfs2 transition already as we had talked about a
shorter timeframe, so I didn't check to make sure libsysfs2 was there.

Anyway, Martin is about to upload libsysfs2 this week (around tomorrow) or
so seems to be the plan if he doesn't delay it :-) When that happens this
bug will disapear an we'll all be happier.

Sorry about the inconveniences, if somebody wants to install previous
unstable version of bridge-utils, which has all the dependencies correctly
satisfied in unstable, he can get the version from testing, which is the
same one as we used to have in unstable previous to this premature upload of
mine.

Again: if you believe that Debian should rightfully forbid a choice of venue
to authors, it does implicitely at the same time require a choice of venue
for people who are infringing the rights of the author and like to sue the
author.

Conclusion: if Debian would act this way, Debian would be anti-social and
put the authors off Debian. As a later result, there would be no free
software anymore.

Free Software is a curtesy of it's authors. If you take away all rights from
the authors, you loose anything you have.

Bug#254113: New version of ttf-freefont to test

2006-02-14 Thread Christian Perrier
I just built a new upstream version of ttf-freefont. As Konstantinos
is mostly away currently, I wanted to give a try for getting a new
version in as the graphical installer could benefit it.

I am not at all a font guy...I just took some time to build this new
version.

Can people who experienced spacing problems with former versions test
that one ?

http://people.debian.org/~bubulle/ttf-freefont

G-I people, can you also have a look at it?

Please keep me CC'ed to answers.

Bug#352834: abuse: Cannot climb ladders

Package: abuse

Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I have installed and run abuse as usual at an i386 (the bug occurs at
amd64). In the game I cannot climb any ladders. The character climbs
to the top of each one of them and when he is just about to get on the
top platform, he starts to kind of jump a little and cannot go on. I
would guess it is some kind of timing issue.

Huh? *You* were talking about the Debian rules, now you are switching to
legal backgrounds? Could you please decide what you want?

I suggest you don't take this stuff personally; perhaps you sell the
rights on the software tomorrow to someone else, who could then start to
sue the users based upon your choice of venue of today.

Yes, so? This is Debian, not OSI.

> Please don't try to create FUD on the CDDL.

I suggest you reread my statements. I didn't say much about the CDDL (in
fact, nothing at all; perhaps I should have chosen a clearer subject).
However, you have chosen a choice of venue -- and that is the point of
my bug report.

OTOH, I seriously wonder why the maintainer didn't react on this one,
one way or another.

Thomas

I'm sorry I see absolutely no way dpkg could have just decided to
overwrite your config. You must have some setting somewhere that tells it
to do this.

I'm not going to close the bug report because there may be something I'm
missing but I'm reducing the severity. Dovecot will not be able to enter
testing otherwise.

I would appreciate it if you would keep me informed on any new info you
find about this bug and I'm sorry we cannot come to a definitive
resolution yet.

This aplies _only_ to users who like to sue _me_, so this only aplies to
_BAD_ users.

The CDDL is an aproved OSS compliant license.

Please don't try to create FUD on the CDDL.

That's OK - it's already marked as found in both KDE 3.5 and 3.4.

There do seem to be more reports of the problem since KDE 3.5,
interestingly, but the bug reports (KDE #104956, KDE #114163, not to
mention Debian #332473) also describe the same basic problem in KDE 3.4,
sadly.

I know that this is an ocamlopt bug (which appears only with big
executables on alpha), but I think it could easily be worked around in
mldonkey (coq already does this IIRC), either by using ocamlc on alpha
or by falling back to ocamlc if ocamlopt fails.
2.7.3-1 still fails to build in the same way.

The indep pacakges are always built together with the arch-dep packages, the
question is, are there arch indep packages, and if so can the arch-dep
packages be built without buildind the indep packages, they could not be
indep then I guess.

I haven't looked at the rules at all, I am just guessing here.

If your package is _not_ building an _all.deb using fig2dev, typically a
pacakge called *-doc_all.deb, just change the build-depends.

If it is building an all.deb, then you should fix the rules, otherwise you
would just receive another bugreport that the package is building all.debs
in the binary-arch target, which is a waste of CPU time on the buildds, plus
it leaves _all.deb lying around in the build directory, since those debs are
never uploaded by the buildd, but only by the maintainer during the initial
upload of source and debs, which includes _all.debs.

fig2dev is probably in the transfig package, if you build the doc files in

fig2dev in Build-Depends, not in Build-Depends-Indep.

Christian

We have 2 of these bugs now (#352775 and #352779). According to
debian/rules:

# We aren't actually able to build arch-indep independently from
# arch-dep, so we guarantee that the arch build has been done first
build-indep: build-indep-stamp
build-indep-stamp: configure-stamp build-arch

Thus, our indep target can not be built without the arch-dependent
target, and thus we need the Build-Depends-Indep dependencies to be in
Build-Depends, or to fix the rules. I did the first with r195. If this
solution is acceptable, can we have an upload soonish? If we'd rather
fix the rules file (probably a better solution, although I'm not sure
why this was done in the first place), I don't know that I know I trust
doing it myself without any guidance, so someone would either have to
give me a hint or do it themselves.

Cheers,
Benjamin

Bug#350183: Bug #350183: this isn't limited to network devices

2006-02-14 Thread Mike Crowe
I don't think this issue is limited to network devices.

I have a machine with onboard SCSI, SATA and RAID on a separate
card. Even though the onboard SCSI and SATA have no drives connected
the machine fails to boot and drops me at a busybox shell prompt
inside the initrd:

Begin: Mounting root file system ...

I also get the network interface reordering problem described in this

I've worked around the problem for now by disabling the unused
facilities on the motherboard.

The machine is running sarge/amd64 with 2.6.15 kernel and associated

Bug#271051: Bug#342249: Help proposal :) [u]

2006-02-14 Thread Ralph Passgang
Hi,

I really would appreciate a recent xen3 debian package as well, so I am
willing to help as good as I can to get this on track. I have created an
alioth account for me (called: "tha-guest") and will subscribe to the
mailinglists to keep me up to date.

As Saku already said, I have already working xen3 packages (at the moment xen
3.0.1) which could be a good base for further development. There are some
aspects that could be made better and some aspects that may not be 100%
compatible to the debian policy right now, but that should be only some minor
issues.

If someone not already saw the packages, take a look yourself:
http://packages.debianbase.de/sources/xen3/

I also have a package for a xen dom0/U kernel, but this is more or less only a
hack so that I can compile xen kernels for all debian distros (and for i386 +
amd64) on my personal autobuilder. If the plan is to have a xen kernel in the
main debian repository, then this would really need a lot work.

if there is something I can do to help this project, let me know!

regards,
 Ralph

Bug#352103: NMU Patch to fix this bug

Agreed.

Why doesn't --make-pidfile work?

In any case, about put_pid():

* /var/run should not be harcoded, it should be #DEFINEd (that way the
patch is usable for other distros)

* it should return an integer to determine if it is succesful or not (the
main program could, or could not, care about the pid file
creation and check the return value)

* there's a buffer overflow if 'fname' is longer than 512 chars. buf should
*not* be of a static size

* it should refuse to run (or create a pidfile) if the pidfile already
  exists.

Also the program should remove the pidfile on exit. Otherwise the init.d
file will not be able to start it up properly if it gets killed for some
reason.

You also get a conflict if root runs 'portresevere' manually after the system
started and might end up with two copies of the daemon.

Have you reused code from somewhere or is it your own?

I suggest you reuse a pidfile creation function from some other tested
program, there should be plenty of examples around. If you don't find any
then I suggest you change the put_pid() function to just drop in
PIDDIR/PROGNAME where PIDDIR is #DEFINEd to /var/run and PROGNAME is #DEFINEd
to portresever. The funcion should check if the file exists and abort if it does
(maybe through a negative return value that the main program uses to abort
instead of doing it from put_pid())

I don't like the patch to portreserve.c and I object to this NMU. You *can*
NMU, however, to include the changes to the init.d script.

Regards

Javier

Bug#352811: emacs21: Font problem - characters displayed as boxes

2006-02-14 Thread Joakim Lundborg
Package: emacs21
Version: 21.4a-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

All normal sized characters (i.e. the default in buffers) are displayed
as boxes. Some other font sizes/faces seems to work, like the startup
screen and the menu. But these look blocky and ugly, and the menu font
seems stretched out vertically.

When I try to change the font from the menu, emacs segfaults.

Bug#352103: NMU Patch to fix this bug

2006-02-14 Thread Matt Brown
Hi,

I have prepared a NMU patch to fix this bug as a part of the T & S
portion of my NM application.

As described in the original problem report there were several fairly
trivial fixes required to to the init script.
1) Incorrect test when checking for valid service files - fixed by using
-z not -n
2) check running function needs a call to basename to match value in
$NAME variable

Additionally the running function never succeeded because portreserve
doesn't create a pid file. This is fairly impolite for a daemon.
Unfortunately the --make-pidfile option to start-stop-daemon is not able
to create a pidfile in this situation so I have patched the portreserve
binary to create a pidfile.

Obviously I'm not yet a DD so this NMU will be made by my AM (formorer)
at a later date. In the meantime packages are available in my repository
at http://www.mattb.net.nz/debian/

Kind Regards

Dear maintainer

Please upgrade the build dependencies of your package to use
libmysqlclient15-dev

We do not need to hurry with this as the MySQL libraries have versioned
dependencies. Just remember to do this when your doing the next upload
anyway.

(If this could happen within six weeks or so, I would appreciat it so that
I can finally get completely rid of any MySQL 4.0.x and 4.1.x packages
leaving Etch only with 5.0.x.)

thanks,

 Thanks to Guy Coates
   * Move hacluster user and haclient group creation (don't ask me why the
user and group names are different) from preinst to postinst.
Once upon a time there might have been a need for it in preinst,
but the current packaging changes files to have the hacluster user
and haclient group as neccessary in the postinst. So there is
no need to create them before postinst.

 heartbeat (1.2.4-4) unstable; urgency=low
 .
This is a better fix to #352027, and the pre-depends on adduser
has been changed to a depends accordingly.
