2006-10-02 Thread Andrei Emeltchenko
Package: gdm
Version: 2.14.5-1
Followup-For: Bug #390607

The reason why I have submitted bug for GDM is that other WM start
session OK (i.e. wdm)

I can also start session with startx without problem.

Best regards

Are you 100% sure you tried with 0.10.5-5? I fixed this particular bug
in 0.10.5-5, and it works now (at least on my system I could reproduce
the bug in the past, and I now have both bindings installed, and
 quodlibet starts).

I'm closing the bug as I think you reported against the wrong version,
but please reopen if you still get the bug with 0.10.5-5 and send me
 the output of:
import pygst
pygst.require("0.10")
import gst
print gst.gst_version, gst.pygst_version

This ends up being the key: scrollkeeper depends on both libxslt1.1 and
libxml2, and the sarge libxslt1.1 seems to be incompatible with the etch
libxml2 but only libxml2 is upgraded as a dependency of synaptic.

Upgrading libxslt1.1 to the etch version makes the problem go away.

So the etch version of libxml2 needs to conflict with the sarge version of
libxslt1.1, since libxslt is known to use internal interfaces of libxml2.

Hi

Your package FTBFS because libgnustep-gui0.9-dev is not available
(anymore). You might want to update the build dependency to
libgnustep-gui0.10-dev.

So, this is indeed a bug in libbonoboui2-dev. The package contains ELF
binaries, but -- as a -dev package -- it isn't pulling in dependencies from
dpkg-shlibdeps. That needs to be corrected, which will conveniently also
fix the need for libdbus-1-2 itself since on rebuild it will pick up
libdbus-1-3 instead.

Bug#390796: no nvidia-graphics-legacy-modules packages for current nvidia-glx-legacy

2006-10-02 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: nvidia-graphics-legacy-modules-i386
Version: 1.0.7182+1
Severity: serious
Tags: sid patch

Hi Randall,

The nvidia-glx-legacy package is uninstallable in unstable, and not being
updated in testing, because there are no nvidia-graphics-legacy-modules-i386
packages built for the current version. As this prevents bug #372252 from
being fixed in testing, this will most probably result in nvidia-glx-legacy
being dropped from etch if new binary packages aren't made available soon.

Does the module/driver ABI really change so frequently that each upstream
version needs its own ABI declaration? Oh well, assuming for the moment
that this is the case, attached is a simple patch to update for the latest
kernel version and the latest nvidia ABI. I'm happy to NMU for this if you
don't have time to get to it.

BTW, are there any plans to provide prepackaged modules for the amd64
n-g-d-l packages?

Cheers,

I didn't found any related bug to this particular case. #390113 looks
the same but isn't, it didn't eat my CPU to 100%. Feel free to merge
it.

By the way I'm able to open and work on the same files on PowerPC,
same version but no localization packages installed.

Rudy

I agree, but was hesitant to assert this without some corroboration.

If this file is a non-copyrightable interface definition, the bug here is
the presence of a copyright notice and license statement where there should
be none.

Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.4-2
Severity: grave

cupsys-1.2.4-2 was compiled against libdbus-1-2 which is not available
in the archive anymore. This makes the package uninstallable.
Scheduling binNMUs for i386 should be sufficient.

Cheers,
Michael

I uploaded binNMU'd cupsys 1.2.4-2+b1_i386 made by my own sbuild

Sorry for making noise, but I believe this problem is solved.

I actually was interested in your bug, as a co-maintainer for the
util-vserver package I am interested in resolving all bugs as quickly as
possible. However, your hostile tone, and accusations of me being a
troll, when it appears I was just pointing out something you didn't want
to hear -- had a highly demotivating affect on my desire to help you.

Bug#354622: Using Firefox as the app name without official branding is still a trademark violation

The argument for fixing upstream is that by taking a fix for a bug
that's unpatched upstream, you will call attention to that potential
exploit, and thus put non-Debian users at risk.

Are you suggesting we don't patch the branches you don't support any
more ?

Not sure why you got that impression. I think it'd be better,
assuming anyone aside from Debian still cares about 1.0.x, to patch
mozilla.org CVS and share the goodness. But that's going offtopic,
and I've fallen into that trap too much in this thread.

The "GLX Public License" appears to be gone from the Mesa sources: all
the files which contained it are simply gone.

I've summarized the status in the other two bugs (368559 and 368564)
which resulted from the Xorg package split. It's still present in those
packages, albeit in one file each. It may be easier to rewrite those
two files than to get the code relicensed.

The SGI Free Software License B is still present in all three packages,
and in substantial quantities.

Perhaps you have handbuilt modules littering your kernel's module libdir, or
you did not first remove all previous modules from kernel space before
loading new modules?

Bug#390786: apache2.2-common: cannot touch /var/log/apache2/error.log

2006-10-02 Thread Russ Allbery
Package: apache2.2-common
Version: 2.2.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

apache2.2-common won't install, at least within a pbuilder chroot.
The postinst aborts with the following error:

touch: cannot touch `/var/log/apache2/error.log': No such file or directory
touch: cannot touch `/var/log/apache2/access.log': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing apache2.2-common (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

This prevents building packages against Apache 2.2, since
apache2-threaded-dev depends on apache2.2-common.

A missing directory in the package or mkdir in the postinst, maybe?

2006-10-02 Thread Chip Salzenberg
Package: madwifi-source
Version: 1:0.9.2+r1710.20060914-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The drivers seem to build OK for kernel 2.6.16-2-686, but when I try to
actually use them, I get a raft of "disagrees about version of symbol"
reports, and some of the modules in the package refuse to load. To wit:

/etc/inetd.conf is currently created by netbase, if hurd does not use
the netbase package then its replacement too should create inetd.conf.
Or at least it should do this until a better solution is designed.
So far it's not obvious which package should create inetd.conf, so I
think that we can safely continue ignoring the issue for a few more
months since it does not affect real systems anyway.

Adding a dependency on netbase to update-inetd would create a dependency
loop, which I understand is a bad thing. But this does not really matter
because post-etch netbase will become an essential package for unrelated
reasons.

Package: binutils-multiarch
Version: 2.17-2
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/objdump

Hi,

the latest upload of binutils (2.17-2) breaks the objdump in
binutils-multiarch on amd64:

% objdump -a /emul/ia32-linux/lib/libc-2.3.6.so
objdump: /emul/ia32-linux/lib/libc-2.3.6.so: File format is ambiguous
objdump: Matching formats: elf32-i386 elf32-i386-freebsd

Reverting back to 2.17-1 gives:

# objdump -a /emul/ia32-linux/lib/libc-2.3.6.so

/emul/ia32-linux/lib/libc-2.3.6.so: file format elf32-i386
/emul/ia32-linux/lib/libc-2.3.6.so

Ari (irc nick), who initialy notice the bug, mentioned that it also
works on i386 so this looks to be arch specific to amd64.

Hello James,

There is an error when attempting to purge gnus:
  Removing gnus ...
Purging configuration files for gnus ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/gnus.postrm: line 14: ucf: command not found

The postrm script cannot rely on ucf to be available when purging.

See Policy 7.2:
Note, however, that the `postrm' cannot rely on any non-essential packages to
be present during the `purge' phase.

The connection was very slow, so it maybe ran into a timeout. A second

These errors are all occuring on a machine that only has 64Mb of real
memory. When retried on another buildd they succeed. These kind of
(C++) packages shouldn't be building on the low memory buildds anyway,
so I'm going to downgrade the bug for now.

I am talking strictly about the core.schema file as shipped. The
Internet Society license in the file says: "this document itself may
not be modified in any way". Which means it's not free. I don't know
how that got there or to what extent it applies, but that's what it
says, so I have to assume it's true. If it is not applicable, the text
should be qualified or removed. The earlier bug thread contains other
suggestions on how to deal with this.

Significant parts of core.schema are hard coded into OpenLDAP. And I'm
pretty sure just about all LDAP servers implement core.schema. And
amazingly, no license problems.

And, as I read it, it doesn't say the document can't be modified. In fact,
it quite clearly says the document *can* be modified:

Bug#390773: apparently missing python-gst conflict

2006-10-02 Thread Joey Hess
Package: python-gst0.10
Version: 0.10.5-5
Severity: serious

After upgrading this system from unstable circa 6-9 months ago,
quodlibet failed as described in #390309.

Turns out that I had python-gst installed, and removing it fixed the
problem.

I don't know if this is really a bug in python-gst or even in quodlibet,
or whether python-gst0.10 should conflict with python-gst.

Hello,

while building libept at home I noticed that it suddenly and obscurely
cannot link to -lapt-pkg anymore.

mvo told me that the bug has already been found on ubuntu:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gcc-4.1/+bug/62461
and that doko is looking into it.

Just rebuilding apt with the newer gcc fixed the problem for me as well.

Ciao,

Internet Society license in the file says: "this document itself may
not be modified in any way". Which means it's not free. I don't know
how that got there or to what extent it applies, but that's what it
says, so I have to assume it's true. If it is not applicable, the text
should be qualified or removed. The earlier bug thread contains other
suggestions on how to deal with this.

Since this was fixed on the libselinux side (#388375), you need to either
use pkg-config to get the proper dependencies, or else insert -lpthread
manually.

I will modify the source tarball name or version. If you can suggest
me your preference on that, it would help me a bit. :)

I've seen several packages that used 'dfsg' in the version field, but
none that used a modified package name. I don't really know, but it
seems that using the version field would at least be consistent with
other packages.

Thanks for working so fast on this!

apt-listbugs is a tool which retrieves bug reports from the Debian Bug

Many developers and users prefer the unstable version of Debian for its new

   installing a buggy package.
   .
apt-listbugs lists critical bug reports from the Debian Bug Tracking System.

Package: uuid-dev

Severity: serious

Hi!

It seems your package contains non-free RFC/I-Ds:

/usr/share/doc/libuuid1/draft-leach-uuids-guids-01.txt.gz

The license on RFC/I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810
http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation

I believe the options are:

1) Remove the file from the package (which may include re-packaging
   the source code).

2) Move the files to a non-free package (which may also include
   re-packaging the source code).

If you disagree with this, because this bug is reported for several
packages at once, it seems better to discuss this on debian-legal, in
this thread:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.legal/25993

The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy
.

I'm sorry if this report is filed in error, I went over many packages
looking for suspicious filenames, and there may be false positives.

Thanks,
Simon

Package: debsecan
Version: 0.4.2
Severity: important

For the last couple of days, I've noticed the 'debsecan' cron
job bombing out, with the following message mailed to me:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/debsecan", line 753, in ?
rate_system(target, options, fetch_data(options), history)
  File "/usr/bin/debsecan", line 698, in rate_system
pkg_version = Version(contents)
File "/usr/bin/debsecan", line 92, in __init__
self.__parsed = self.__parse(version)
File "/usr/bin/debsecan", line 111, in __parse
raise ValueError, "invalid Debian version string"
ValueError: invalid Debian version string

This started happening shortly after I upgraded the system from
Python 2.3 to 2.4. After running 'debsecan' by hand, I noticed a tiny
diagnostic (not included in the emailed output) suggesting that
installing 'python-apt' would be helpful. I did, and the problem
immediately went away.

Checking with 'aptitude', I see that 'debsecan' merely Suggests
'python-apt', and does not Depend on it, thus resulting in the unhelpful
output. Barring other considerations, I would recommend upgrading
'python-apt' to a Dependency and not simply a Suggestion. Either that,
or fixing 'debsecan' such that it doesn't bomb out completely if
'python-apt' isn't present.

Doesn't the copyright in question apply to the RFC only? AFAICS, core.schema
basically reads:

  1. Part of OpenLDAP, with the following license:
  2. OpenLDAP license (see license.html)
  3. Based on an RFC, with the following license:
  4. RFC license
  5. Specific RFC attributions
  6. The schema itself

Or are you claiming that anything implementing the schema from a copyrighted
RFC falls under that license?

Hi Manuel,

I recently uploaded a 2.8c package to Debian, and although it builds on
all architectures, it may be that the jvm tests reveal a problem on 64bit
platforms.

OTOH, you may have tested it with Sun's jvm, and I have configured the
package to use gij to run the tests, so it may be a gij problem instead.

Have you seen any similar problem already ?

Best regards,

Hi

Your package fails to build from source for alpha, amd64, hppa and ia64. So it
seems there is a problem for the 64-bit architectures.

Bug#390357: 64-bit specific error in bigloo, or in gij ?

2006-10-02 Thread Yann Dirson
Hi gij maintainers,

Since that error the bigloo "jvm tests" show only occurs during, well,
the "jvm tests", I am wondering if it could not be a gij 64bit issue.

For the background, the bigloo scheme compiler, among other target
runtime environements, can generate JVM bytecode, and it is the
testsuite exercising this backend which shows the problem.

Could someone with access to several jvm's on a 64bit machine please
give a try at building the bigloo package with them ? The build
procedure takes whatever "java" is in its $PATH, only the build-deps
(sort of) make sure that gij is selected.

Best regards,

Yann.

Hi

Your package fails to build from source for alpha, amd64, hppa and ia64. So it
seems there is a problem for the 64-bit architectures.

The build logs can be found on [1] as usual, though below is a transcript of

Hi,

jsut some more info for this.

dpkg-reconfigure doesn't work when the package is in this broken state
so one can't even switch from a (non existing) local db to a remote db
to fix the failure.

Bug#390581: segfault on amd64

2006-10-02 Thread Ola Lundqvist
Hi

Thanks for the help. I have now unapplied that patch and will upload
a new version in a short while.

To Truxton Fulton: Could you revise this patch to determine why
it do not work on amd64. I liked it. I assume that it can have something
to do with the fd_set calls that you mentioned in the mail to me.

Unfortunatly I have to remove it right now in order for it to not
segfault on amd64.

Roland and Per: Please try this new version that is uploaded to
debian today.

// Ola

Bug#390693: gcc-4.1 fails to build the glibc on ia64 (forwarded from Aurelien Jarno)

2006-10-02 Thread Matthias Klose
gcc-4.1 uses the backport of PR 26208 from the trunk.

--- Begin Message ---
Package: gcc-4.1
Version: 4.1.1-14
Severity: serious

The latest version of the glibc failed to build on ia64 with the
following error:

gcc-4.1 -nostdlib -nostartfiles -static -o

http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=glibc&ver=2.3.6.ds1-5&arch=ia64&stamp=1159739411&file=log&as=raw

As the only code change from the previous version (if we except the
changes in the hurd directory) are 6 lines of code in the math library,
my guess is that the bug is in gcc-4.1. This also mean that the previous
version in etch fails to build from source the same way, hence the
severity serious.

The last build has been done with gcc-4.1 version 4.1.1-11.

Hello,

`dpkg -L slice` said, there's no executable and manpage. At least in
the previous revision (-6), /usr/bin/slice and
/usr/share/man/man1/slice.1.gz were included properly.

Thanks,

Hmm, sorry, this doesn't help a lot to pinpoint the relevant file.
Could you please grep -rl libdbus-1.so.2 /usr/lib?

Please "dpkg -S" the files returned by the above command.

Dear all,
well I own a PPC machine (Powerbook G4), but at the moment of the pkg
creation I used a x86.
Anyway I tested on my G4 and I realized what you reported: but afterward I
downloaded the sources from debian official repos and I builded from them.
I deinstalled the previous pkg and reinstalled the one just compiled.
From this moment on it has worked fine without error.
Can you test a rebuild please, meanwhile I am going to investigate on this
strange behaviour?
Thanks

Well on the one hand if there's a patch available to fix a security
issue that I can get my hands on, I probably won't wait until the
official release from Mozilla to apply the fix. If I can get my hands
on it, that means umpteen many people can too, so I would see no point
in delaying even if it does draw attention to the vulnerability.

On the other hand if somehow I was privy to a vulnerability that
upstream wasn't, of course I would report it. I'm a good citizen in
this community as I'm sure nearly all of Debian is. But my point was
even if I didn't (eg, hit by a bus, had dental surgery, was mad at you
because you ran over my puppy or merely because I forgot) I couldn't
actually hide the fact that I did it effectively. It's all out in the
open, so I don't see how I could be accused of bad faith or
irresponsibility.

Exactly. If the package is called firefox then it can be perceived as
claiming it is firefox. If we provide an empty package called firefox
to ease the upgrade to iceweasel or what have you, it just looks like
we're providing an upgrade path from firefox to the new package.
