Error when Gnome2 Starts
Hi all, I just upgraded to Gnome 2, and I was wondering how to go about fixing this problem. I've erased all of my Gnome/Gnome 2 prefs, and I've installed everything I can think of that would deal with this problem. Anyway, here is the error message that pops up when Gnome 2 is starting: There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly. The Settings Daemon restarted too many times. The last error message was: Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon' GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in. I also have a problem with gkrellm2 showing up in my task bar when I have it set specifically not to. Before I forget, I'm running a Powerbook G3 Firewire under Debian Testing. (With some Unstable packages...) Thanks! -Mannequin

Still, many people have installed Debian on this machine. It's no powerhouse by today's standards. The powermac archive kernel (2.2 series) works fine; it is a 601, but it is a PCI mac, I think Jeramy was thinking about a NuBus kernel. Do you have a MacOS system CD or floppies? It's somewhat desirable to leave a minimal MacOS partition, so you can use BootX to try different kernels and boot arguments easily. If you have a System CD, that's easy; use Drive Setup to partition into one small partition (50-75M) and the rest free space, install MacOS on the small one, then boot the Debian installer either from BootX or floppy. quik will also work as a boot loader if you want a totally-free machine. But you don't have video access to OpenFirmware, so it's a bit of a hassle if it doesn't work the first time, to figure out what needs to change. -- Debian GNU/Linux Operating System By the People, For the People Chris Tillman (a people instance)

Try purging the package, downgrading to the -2 package, and then upgrading to -4, and tell me what happened to the symlink then, ideally you could also use script to send me a full log of what happened. just type script /tmp/powerpc.log before and exit afterward, and send me the /tmp/powerpc.log file. > It left my old link as it was and I made the changes by hand. > > and I've also found this in /boot/ for the first time: > > vmlinux.coff-2.4.20-powerpc > > What is it? Pre-yaboot stuff needed coff kernels. coff is i think the executable format of older macs or something such, i don't really know, but will investigate. > Anyway, thanks for correcting the problem so quickly. No problem, i created the mess for others, so i should fix it. Friendly, Sven Luther
Re: updated kernel problem
Sven, I just grabbed your 2.4.20-4 pmac build and I've rebooted and it's fine. Two things that seem different from previous kernel upgrades (I could just have missed these before): It didn't automatically create the symbolic link from /vmlinux -> /boot/vmlinux-2.4.20-powerpc It left my old link as it was and I made the changes by hand. and I've also found this in /boot/ for the first time: vmlinux.coff-2.4.20-powerpc What is it? Anyway, thanks for correcting the problem so quickly. First, is there any reason I should not use this machine? Its the only computer I have other than the family machine (WinXP). The 7200 had issues. Just for the heck of it once; I installed a cache chip, 2 256MB dimms, a voodoo3 card, a scsi card, and a 100tx network card in one. I think there were power issues causing instability (the builtin power supply is wimpy and wasn't made with all that stuff in mind). The internal scsi on this machine is 5MB/s. The onboard network chip should be fine for cable modem internet. The graphics will be slow as moses. It has no cache chip and installing one will really help the performance. One other thing is kernel support for the processor. I am not sure if the current kernel is stable on 601 or not. It should be fine if you want a machine to lynx from if you don't have a lot of money to try to upgrade it with.
New Linux Install advice?
I am looking at installing Linux on my PPC 7200/90 machine with soon to be 64megs of ram, 500MB HD with a cable modem connection. First, is there any reason I should not use this machine? Its the only computer I have other than the family machine (WinXP). Second, before I start can anyone tell me of any good books on running Linux on a Mac system? NO MAC OS installed. Third, any other advice would be greatly appreciated Thank you in advance for any help you may offer... Jacob Tennant K8JWT (Ham Radio Operator)
KDE problem on startup
When KDE is starting, it goes through like 5 stages represented by icons. Unfortunately, I can't remember them all but on the second one, where it's starting system something or other it hangs for a long time, then the startup screen disappears leaving just a light blue background and nonething else. What could be wrong? I'm using Debian stable on a PowerPC. It's been working fine for almost a year now. Curtis
