Right. It's a goal for most of them. Debian-BR-CDD is going to start
to upload their package in next weeks and we've done a nice bunch of
clean up to allow it to be more acceptable for Debian. We'll probably
don't meet this goal for lenny (to be a real CDD) release but we hope
to do so for lenny+1.

We're able to not change d-i anymore now. This is one of major steps
required. Next is to make GDM more customizable so we can avoid 'sed
hacks' on it ;-)

I do as well.

As I see it, Debian-edu (Skolelinux) has an intend of _becoming_ a CDD -
while their products released so far are _derived_ from Debian.

I do not share this view with all current members of Debian-edu.

On the other hand the name "CDD" should not be kind of a medal to wear
but a goal to reach. If a project has understand that it will profit
from working on integrating their stuff right into Debian to become a
CDD all parties have won. Finally we want something to work with and
not only a name tag and becoming a CDD might be a asymptotic process.

Kind regards

 Andreas.

I wholeheartedly agree with Otavio.

As I see it, Debian-edu (Skolelinux) has an intend of _becoming_ a CDD -
while their products released so far are _derived_ from Debian.

I do not share this view with all current members of Debian-edu.

In my POV, the only ones that are _real_ CDDs for now are the
metapackages ones (med, bio, lex, ...) but I think Lenny will be much
better for it.

My concept of CDD requires only Debian archive packages. So every
distro that modifies packages (even a single one) isn't a CDD since it
isn't really a subset of Debian.

I'd say they are a CDD. http://wiki.debian.org/CustomDebian doesnt say that
CDD cant be customized and that page also lists many other CDDs which include
modified or added packages.

On a second read, that page says

"Custom Debian Distribution (CDD): a subset of Debian that is configured to
support a particular target group out-of-the-box."

and

"CDDs released with Etch: If you will get Etch the following CDDs are
contained: [...] Skolelinux (built by the DebianEdu project): a CDD aimed at
schools."

The reality is, while Debian Edu is a CDD not all parts of it are part of
Debian etch.

Holger

In the long term this is all going to be integrated into Debian?
That'd be cool!

AFAIK they aim to be a CDD, but currently they have a number of modified
packages, mainly because (program) translations for Dzongkha are not (yet)
available in Debian Etch.
They also have some minor customizations of the installation system (mainly
some defaults) and custom tasks for tasksel.
