I have an IA job at an interactive ad agency w/ a very diverse, creative
client listthe culture is very relaxed, casual/funky, and creative RULES
the roost like no other place. I must be demure about sharing the client's

yeah, i wasn't able to search for the ixda group either on L.I,, so I
did an advanced search for "ixda", found a linkedin member that DID
have the icon at the bottom of their profile, and clicked on the icon
itself and i was able to request to be added that way (think someone
has to approve me first tho so the jury's still out on the
successful outcome).

[IxDA Discuss] the UX hall of shame

2008-05-05 Thread Joanne Weaver
I am 1/3 laughing, 1/3 flabbergasted, and 1/3 MAD at how poorly
www.godaddy.com <http://www.godaddy.com/> is designed

(plus I am trying to use it at 130am and I am tired anyway, which is making
me even more laughing/flabbergasted/mad)

But it brings up a fun idea:

How about a UX contest to redesign that site? Or any other UX Hall of Shame
sites---altho I don't think there are any majorly trafficked sites out there
that are as bad as godaddy.com (are there??)

It would not only be a point of pride to win, but also a major service to
the public!!

OK, I may be a recruiter, but now I am also officially a UX snob.

You should all be proud of yourselves for doing this to me.

2008-05-07 Thread Joanne Weaver
It's good to know that GD causes others to have such a visceral reaction
too. Neat thread.

I have to say, tho, that offering a great customer support phone line in
tandem with such a craply design site is akin to vinnie breaking your legs
but he's also an ambulance driver so it's ok b/c he can take you straight to
the hospital.

I'd rather keep my good legs AND save time from all the hassle. The issue is
not just about design, right? It's about the overall experience---and if my
experience takes up a lot of time, it isn't serving my purposes best.

>From Dave Katten: "Might even be nice to have a showcase where IxD noobs can
post their work and receive criticism. Great way to build the portfolio and
connect with the community. "Yeah, i remember doing the GoDaddy redesign
problem a few years back. Man that was tough." "

This is a fantastic idea. who do we talk to about this???

Completely agree with you here. Infact the training and maintanence are also
part of the design only because that is actually a need for an enterprise
customer. As I said you try and sell them a product without either and they
wont take it even if the tool itself is easy to use because it doesnt
fullfil all their goals. Training helps get all the users in the company at
the same playing field and they can communicate easily. Since the only
documentation is user guides its not in the interest of the enterprise
customers to make their employees read and learn taking days together and
each will learn a different part and hence may not speak the same language.
A 2-7 day training works better and cheaper :-). They also need maintanence
because the dollars paid there ensures a time gaurantee of when a patch will
be delivered and how the new releases will come by. Without that they may
not be able to dictate an early patch release if their businesses are
waiting for it.

So now that there is a user goal, we design to it. We spend extra time and
dollars making sure we have good training and maintanence support but the
design and interactions of the product itself are not the focus area,
functionalilty is. It may come as a surprise but the total size of our
training and support teams is equal if not larger than the total engineering
teams.

Well I agree here also but then it has to be within the context of how many
more customers are available and whether you are in the consumer space or
the enterprise space. The problem in enterprise space is that the actual
user (the real engineer) is not the decision maker and however loyal he
might be the final decision (infact engineer is generally not part of the
decision making also) is made by the enterprise business teams and for
them there are more important things that loyalty of their employees for a
particular tool. It works for Apple because it works in the consumer space
and there brand loyalty and word of mouth is the king. How many enterprises
have you seen that use a Mac instead of a far far crappier Dell. Most
enterprises use Dell/Lenovo because they can (almost) gaurantee maintanence
support anywhere in the world (to enterprise customers, and maintanence
support is an important enterprise goal) .

[IxDA Discuss] JOB: Information Architect, Seattle -- contract -- UX-geared recruiter

Presented by The Joanne Weaver Group

UX + Creative Talent Acquisition

www.joanneweavergroup.com <http://www.joanneweavergroup.com/>

Hi IxDA'ers!

My client is a major, big-name player in the global design community, and
they're looking for a FREELANCE INFORMATION ARCHITECT for their Seattle
office for an immediate freelance gig.

This IA would need to be able to work approx 40 hour weeks, onsite in
Seattle, for about 4 weeks.

This would be such a major coup to nail this gig---VERY prestigious name to
have on your resume :)

Project Description: (in client's words):
"The product is an online application. It's a partner portal (b2b) for
one of our clients. The designer will be extending a set of
wireframes based on already created scenarios. So they need to have
Information architecture/wireframing skills. Most of the navigation
might already be figured out. They'll be working alongside other
designers, so they'll have direction and won't have to be on their
own. Will probably be using Visio."

This could potentially lead to more regular work.

Please email [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Include your resume, URL, rates, availability, and/or any (scrubbed) samples
that you may have handy

And as I know that the IxDA folks are infamous for being so helpful and
community-centric, I would *really* appreciate you putting that ethos into
play for me and helping me get the word out to your Seattle counterparts.
This is such a fantastic opportunity to get some high-visibility, F50? F100?
work in the ol' portfolio AND work alongside the best of the best.

Joanne

**Plea for help to the greater IxDA community: Please forward to your
Midwestern/Midwestern-minded friends---I could sure use your networking help
in our nation's breadbasket! thanks so much; referral bonus offered!**

Hi IxDA'ers---quite a mouthful of a subject line---but there's quite a bit
to squeeze in about this role..!

Ever daydream about moving out to a small town within a bigger town, in a
sleepy Midwestern slice of the world where life moves slower, the music
scene is fantastic + up + coming, the cost of living is dramatically lower,
and you could still have the opportunity to work on world-reknowned clients
(including one that creates the 2nd most downloaded widget on MySpace and
gets 18 million visitors per month)?

Even better, you could put your killer + UX skills to use within a
tight-knit family of likeminded people, working in a converted old
schoolhouse on applications and web experiences that are entirely
UX-centric, beautiful, smart and would serve as great portfolio fodder.

This may be your lucky day!

An 8 person firm in Irvington, Indiana (hip little subsidary of
Indianapolis, going through a major revitalization) is looking for an
INTERACTION DESIGNER with great UX + Design skills to join their happy team.

They did the redesign of flixster.com (that super cool search/recommendation
engine + movie player on Netflix), which gets 18 million visits per month,
and is the 2nd most installed widget on MySpace.

Relocation assistance offered.

Qualifications

. Strong visual design skills

. Strong or growing interaction design skills

. Empathy for the end user

. Proficiency with Photoshop and Illustrator (Flash is not
required but is a plus)

. Understanding and enthusiasm for the latest in web-based design
and technology

. Desire to practice and hone the latest user experience
methodologies

. Demonstrated skill applying user-centered design practices,
e.g., using ethnography data, user needs analysis, participatory design,
end-user observation data, and usability testing data to influence design
decisions

. Ability to rapidly sketch out user-flows with pencil and paper,
whiteboards or post-it notes

. Ability to develop interactive prototypes and documentation to
aid evaluation of designs for complex applications

. Excellent visual, verbal and written communication skills, with
the ability to effectively engage and convey ideas to technical and business
teams with passion and diplomacy

Responsibilities

. Collaborate with clients, team members, and other stakeholders
to translate rough ideas and opportunities into clear concept models,
tangible prototypes, and elegant screen designs

. Be a champion for users' needs from requirements gathering
through solution definition, with wireframe mockups and detailed visual
design mockups

. Participate in the full design and development cycle to ensure
that creative innovations in user-centered design are faithfully delivered
to our clients

. Contribute to the continual refinement of our company design and
development process

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction Designers: What is your elevator pitch?

2008-12-17 Thread Joanne Weaver
This is the best thread! As a UX recruiter I get asked this question a lot
too + I've always wondered how to encapsulate it best.

I usually try to frame it in context to web designers, as that's what most
laypeople seem to recognize best, ie:
"UX folks create the underlying framework and skeleton and *logic* of a
site, and work very closely with the designers, to make it not only
beautiful, but usable, too."

SR INFORMATION ARCHITECT

Temp-to-permfor boutique interactive agency in Flatiron District

--

Overview:

A boutique, premiere interactive strategy, design, and development agency
with particular capabilities in e-commerce, transactional websites, and
large site builds seeks a temp to perm Senior Information Architect to join
their team immediately and help grow their team + capabilities. Clients
include high-profile names in the consumer packaged goods, financial,
educational, nonprofit, travel, retail worlds and beyond.

The Job Description:

We are looking for a Senior Information Architect with a very, very keen eye
for detail, and the experience in working with ecommerce + retail sites,
large website build projects with lifecycles in the 6-12+ months range, and
the ability to create elegantly-constructed + highly detailed, annotated
wireframes (ie, able to depict what pops up on a rollover, right there on
the wire).

This is someone who thinks strategically and creatively, and who can focus
on all project phases from initial research through launch.

The perfect candidate will ever be attuned to strategy, best UX practices,
and ensuring the clients' and users' needs, while able to be highly
tactical, hands-on, and able to work with very little supervision and ramp
up time, and be able to walk in and "own it" themselves, earn the trust of
the client and the rest of the team, and leave any ego at the door.

The Role:

. Focus on understanding the user goals of a project, creating the success
metrics to go with them, and seeing them through all phases of the project,
often in a very hands-on capacity

. Work with clients to determine goals and present them with winning user
experience concepts

. Infuse our concepts, wireframes and designs with usability and interaction
best practices

. When necessary, be able to lead small UX teams in translating business
problems into user-focused solutions

. Partner with each department to champion and guide UX ideals

. Possess an eye for aesthetics and understand best design practices
thoroughly

The Background:

. 5-7+ years in IA or design roles with a user-oriented focus - must have UX
documentation to show (wireframes, sitemaps, personas, etc)

. Possessing a strong portfolio, including ecommerce and UI-focused
projects, and can talk to your involvement on each

. A team thinker who can work independently and collaboratively

. Self-motivated, wickedly creative, a good communicator with feverish
attention to detail

. The kind of person who gauges CVS against Duane Reade by which one has a
single snake checkout queue and not a line behind each register

This is a temp-to-perm, on-site position at an award-winning company with a
passion for smart design and fulfilling user experiences. We are located in
the Flatiron district of Manhattan, in a bright, cheerful office complete
with game room and dog.

Please email resume + $ requirements + availability to:

joa...@joanneweavergroup.com

$500-1000 referral bonus eligibility offered! Please share with your trusted
