Which D-Link router? I'm using a DI-624 with WPA-PSK without any
problems whatsoever. As long as SuperG and Turbo are disabled, the SB3
can connect just fine with WPA, at least in my case.

Well excuse me for not knowing that AAC is the same as Apple Lossless.
Personally, I don't care that this product doesn't appear able to do
two things at once. Just one, done properly, would be fine.

[slim] Re: Rhapsody Coming to Squeezebox According to PC World

2006-03-25 Thread scthom

For those who may be new, and for the completeness of the thread, there
used to be a Rhapsody plugin. It worked with several of the version 5
SlimServers, but is not being maintained and no longer works with
version 6.

It was one of the reasons I bought the Squeezebox to begin with, though
the loss of Rhapsody is not sufficient for me to stop using it :-)

Hi,

As nobody else is experiencing slow performance using Squeezebox with a
remote I can only come to the same conclusion as others have and that is
that downloading torrents at the same time as using SlimServer will have
a performance impact.

Yes the TS-101 can handle multiple operations at once but please keep
in mind the specification of the box when trying to push it too hard.

I will try downloading a few torrents myself via my box and see how it
impacts the SlimServer operation and come back to you.

As for assigning drive letters to shares, nobody else has indicated any
problems with this so please email me with further information about
your setup.

OK, I got the CPU and Ram today so I'm trying to get this AOpen mini-pc
set up and running. I seem to be having thermal problems. The machine
is shutting itself down after 10 minutes or so and the heatsink for the
cpu (Pentium M 740 1.7ghz) is getting really hot. There is a fan on
the heatsink, but I haven't been able to tell if it's running or not.

There's no IDE connection to the HD or the DVD if you have the case
open, so I have to run with the case closed if I want to set up an OS.
I wish AOpen would post a manual for this beast. The only manual they
have available is a really lame one designed for OEMS to ship with
finished machines.

Does this mean slimserver has its own version of lame somewhere? I

The reason I updated to FW35 (from FW28) was because I was constantly

Installed a TS-101/500Gb firmware 1.0.0.0317; no problems mapping to it
as a drive or bulk general file copy. Copied a single Apple Lossless
file to the music folder and logged into SlimServer using port 9000,
rescanned the music libary.

All looks fine, track can be seen in the SqueezeBox but when you try to
start plaing it, you get the message "Problem: Can't Open File

Is this a known problem? Seems like the 0317 firmaware version is the

the point is that the button was intended to jump to favourites mode
when pushed, and add 'anything' to the favourites using press-and-hold.
however, the hold function does not work, mainly because the
'anything' can be just that, anything. It is a case of docs and intent
being well-ahead of implementation. Not the common way around for
slimserver, but it does happen. I've been slowly playing with a patch
to get it working, but the different items is a bit like wading through

I've almost got my status page working. But I'm hung up on one last

Here's the offending code:

objXMLDoc.SetProperty "ServerHTTPRequest", True
objXMLDoc.Async = False
objXMLDoc.Load ("http://localhost:9000/xml/status.xml";)
objXMLDoc.setProperty "SelectionLanguage", "XPath"

If I double-click on the script, the XML loads almost immediately and
the script completes processing. When I execute the script from Kevin's

SlimServer is meant to feed players inhouse. There's very little security,
nobody knows about vulnerabilities. It's really not meant to be opened to
the world. If you have another computer or (good) router on the player's
side you could build some kind of VPN or SSH tunnel to protect your
server. Or install a real firewall which can limit access to the server to
certain IP addresses.

Still there are people who do it:

downloading a torrent isn't like gownloading something through a web

BTW the final options I ended up with:

Code:

robocopy k:\ m:\ /mir /xd "System Volume Information" /log:"C:\Documents
and Settings\Mark\Desktop\Music Backup.log" /np /tee

So that's:

- copying from k:\, my internal 250 GB music drive, to m:\, my external
backup drive
- /mir: mirroring the drives, which entails copying over all new files,
any file that has changed and deleting files in the destination that
have been deleted in the source
- /xd: ignoring the "System Volume Information" directory that Windows
XP puts in each drive yet is locked out
- /log: logging to a file on my desktop
- /np: don't show progress bars in the log (kind of useless after the
job is finished and you look at the file, no? :-) )
- /tee: display the progress on the screen. Useful to see what it's
currently doing. I suppose that might make the progress bars useful
again, but now that the bulk of my music collection is backed up there
will only be incremental changes from now on.

I am happy that somebody does take on Appel and DRM in general.

Most people reading this forum will know the difference between DRM and
NON DRM. But also the difference between lossy and lossless.

I am not against DRM but I want to be able to play the PC for as long
as I want and as may different devices as I like.

Hopefully this will educate the broader population about booth issues.
I know many people who have no idea that there is difference between a
CD and an MP3 and the limitations of Itunes or other on line stores.

Any store that does provide legal FLAC Download for songs or albums
will get my vote of the wallet. Ideally I would love to see Amazon
provide it because I like their rating engine.

[slim] Re: Budget SlimServer Hardware

2006-03-25 Thread Harani

I too have built a shuttle slimserver box

it also acts a printer server and stores all my other media files such
as movies and digital photos

it has two 250GB SATA hard drives in a mirrored RAID 1 configration (so
only 250GB usable space)

it does not have a monitor or Keyboard, it's purely used as a network
attached Storage device. I just VNC into it if i need to make any
configuration changes.

the 5 1/4 bay is unused (I had a CD drive in it but removed iit after
initial configuration) so there is space in there for two more 3.5"
drives and the next stage will be to put a RAID 5 card into the unused
PCI slot and another 2 250Gb drives to give me 750 GB of usable storage
spacee redundantly striped across 1Tb in Total

To keep the OS seperate fromn the data drives this is stored on a 6Gb
2.5" laptop HD which is small enough to sit in caddy which Velcro's to
the underside of the HD bay (no more room for anything bigger once all
4 drives are in)

The RAID 1 (and later the RAID 5) give me redundancy in case of a HD
failure. And the OS drive backs itelf up to the data Array
periodically

the box is of course firewalled and does periodical shcheduled
antivirus updates and checks

The whole thing so far has cost me around £290.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-25 Thread hfu1

Thanks to Paul of ProgressiveAV for getting the firmware sorted -
appears to copy files fine. However after testing the unit for 3-4 days
now, I have noticed the following:

a) REALLY slow performance with SlimServer - the remote control is
laggy, takes a few seconds to respond to any button push. the web
browser takes ages to respond (10-30 secs). This can't be normal. Yes I
might be downloading torrents with the QNAP at the same time (only 1 or
2) but surely it can handle multiple tasks. As it stands, I don't
regard the SlimServer setup suitable for use.
I have no such performance problems running SlimServer on my laptop.

b) Still can't map to the drive using a driver letter, still having to
use an IP address.

Any ideas welcome. Apart from this, the box works fine, and the torrent
downloading facility is absolutely brilliant, what a godsend!

[slim] What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision - 5 out of 5

2006-03-25 Thread paz

The UK magazine 'What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision' have reviewed the

of 5).

There is an excerpt of the review here:

[slim] More router problems... Buffalo Airstation G54 WHR-G54S

2006-03-25 Thread mwoodroof

Hi, now on my 3rd router/modem. This time I have finally got it all
working fine, with WPA encryption, so I am very happy.

But there is still one problem!! When I open the slimserver web
interface, it flashes up, but then the router kicks in and directs the
browser to its auto connect page, saying "Detecting Internet connection
(Resetting)". This is very frustrating - the SqueezeBox is working fine,
but I just can't get into the SlimServer interface!! Does anyone have
any idea why this might be happening and how I can stop it?

So close and yet so far...

Aaagh!

Any help very much appreciated and could well save my sanity!

[slim] RSS Plugin "Failed to retrieve RSS feed"

2006-03-25 Thread lordypieman

Can anyone help me with this problem? I have just upgraded slimserver
from 6.1 to 6.2.1 and everything is peachy apart from *some* of the RSS
feeds. I had no such problem previously.

I can connect perfectly to RSS News Feeds from CNET, New York Times,
RollingStone and Yahoo. But the feeds from Slashdot BBC World don't
work. When I hit on my remote it says "Loading RSS Feed..." for
about 1/4 second, then displays "Failed to Retrieve RSS Feed" for about
1/2 a second before returning to the RSS menu.

Lordypieman

Slimserver 6.2.1 downloaded and installed yesterday.
with latest AlienBBC, Mplayer, codecs etc.
Slimserver running on Windows 2000, Piii 800MHz with 384Mb RAM
SB2 player has firmware v40 and is connected via cat5
No internal firewalls, no software firewalls, but I do use Trend
Officescan A/V.
Previously, everything worked fine with Slimserver 6.1 which I used
previously. Nothing other than the server software and SB firmware has
changed.

You're using the mailing list aren't you? :-)
I guess this would have sorted out my problem and was the ony way I
could have done it as I was not on the same network and without Remote
Access (so neither DJanGo or bpa's suggestions would work for me)
Still, I don't think that a simple "Restart Server" button on the
"Server Settings" home page would go amiss.

Cheers,

I think it works if you set "Load Plugins on the Fly", then disable the
plugin (and click change), then enable the plugin (and click change).

This should force the plugin to be reloaded (I think).

To all intents and purposes, the QNap is just a hard disk...

Thanks, it was just that I couldn't find the links to the plugins as
they are not where I expected to see them (might be worth mentioning
where they are on your plugin page as I see others have not found them
too).

Hi,

if the Slimserver is started as service you can start and stop the
Service from another Computer - but not via a Webfrontend.

In Windows you can go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools -
Computer Management.
Start this and with a right klick on Computer Managment [local] you can
connect to another Server and start / stop Services.

You had to login on your pc as an Admin and both Systems in the same
Workgroup.

On Linux there are much easier Ways to do the same - but i am now in
hurry - had to go to work now.

Hope another Slimuser would help you - if you use a Tuxbox

[slim] Can't find iTunes music (6.2.1 on WinXP)

2006-03-25 Thread Rob Meades

Slimserver can't find any of my iTunes music anymore. It used to work
fine, but after I did a "clean and re-scan" last night it now shows
zero songs. I've tried both specifying the paths and leaving it on
auto-find with no success. Attached is a debug log, probably with way
too much debug switched on, in which I can't see any sign of Slimserver
actually looking for my iTunes music when asked to do so. I'm using
iTunes version 6.0.1.3.

There's nothing obvious on the bugs database about this and I don't
want to simply install the latest Slimerver without a sign that it
would have a positive effect. Is there an expert here who could take a
glance at the log and tell me if they can see anything obvious going
wrong?

Apologies in advance if I have posted this in the wrong forum etc, -
please point me in the right direction. :-)

Sorry, I should not have mentioned rescanning my music files. It was a
Red Herring.

No I needed to restart SlimServer to pick up some newly installed
plugins. Due to change of physical location I did not have physical
access (or even Remote Desktop access) to my SS PC so I opened up
the web interface from another PC to restart SS.

Hope that's clear. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: [slim] Re: How do I stop/start SlimServer from web interface

2006-03-25 Thread Michael Herger

The reason I want to restart it is because I've just installed your
Biography and Album Review plugins.

Now _that_ would be a good reason :-)

To get them to appear on the SS
interface I need to restart the server.

You can set the server to recognize plugins without restart (top option in
the plugins section).

Anyway, I've restarted SS (the hard way!) and I can't see any links to
your plugins. I guess this requires another thread in the third party
plugins though.

Please do so (and answer the following questions over there: check the
d_plugins output - do you have the additional modules installed (see my
web page)).

Funny Michael,
The reason I want to restart it is because I've just installed your
Biography and Album Review plugins. To get them to appear on the SS
interface I need to restart the server. It would have been easiest to
do this via the web interface and I was somewhat surprised to see that
there didn't appear to be a stop/start function on the web iterface.

OK, what I want is a restart function I guess. Once it's restarted the
web interface will continue to work (I magine?), won't it?

Anyway, I've restarted SS (the hard way!) and I can't see any links to
your plugins. I guess this requires another thread in the third party

You can't.

Even if you could stop it using the web UI, you certainly wouldn't be

[slim] Mac OS X nightly not 100% universal?

2006-03-25 Thread Chippy

Hi -
I've been running various 6.22 nightly builds on my new Intel Mac Mini
over the past few weeks. And everything's working great! Thanks so much
for getting a universal version out so quickly.

One question: it appears that whichever nightly version I use, there is
always one process spawned by SS - mDNSResponderPos - that is a PowerPC
process (according to activity monitor).

Shouldn't this process be Intel also? Although it has a small
footprint, this is the only PowerPC process running on my Mac. I'm
therefore guessing that it alone is forcing me to use Rosetta - and
draining system resources unnecessarily?

cheers
Chippy
