[DX-NEWS] AH3D update #8
Dear Editors, I just spoke with Martti and he said that the team is at 27.5K QSOs. They will have 1 and maybe 2 stations on tonight. They will be limited to 10/15/20 plus a bonus of 30 meters. Everyone is fine and in good spirits. They had pushed themselves very hard (read very little sleep) but started to relax a bit this morning. They will leave the island at 23Z on the 4th. This means the last QSO will be approximately 19Z on the 4th. [DX-NEWS] AH3D update #7
Dear Editors, The team will be on 20 RTTY for EU ONLY starting at 0700Z or a little before. The LF antennas will come down Monday afternoon and only the 10/15/20 tribander will stay up. They will have one station on Monday night but only on the tribander. Pertti stayed up all night last night for the low bands and Martti took over from Bernie in the early morning hours on 160. They are up to 22K total QSOs. Last night they made 700 Q's on 80 and 300 on 160. Martti says that there are large industrial buildings nearby that might be the source their low band noise. The buildings were shut down for the weekend and he is hoping that tonight will also be very productive on 80 and 160 like last night so if you didn't make it before try tonight. They will do some more WARC band operation and they might activate one more band mode like 17 SSB or 12 CW. They leave at 1PM (local) Tuesday from Johnston Island. [DX-NEWS] AH3D update #6
Dear Editors, Bernie said that the team has decided to give one contact per band on some bands since time is limited and they want to get as many a new band as possible. Therefore, there will be no 10 CW, 12 CW, or 17 SSB. The good news is that they will put the ends back on the 75 dipole and will be on 80 CW tomorrow night. Also there will be more 30 but not until at least 20Z 1 Feb. Martti slept on the floor of the shack until he woke up with mice crawling over him. [DX-NEWS] AH3D update #5
Dear Editors, I just spoke with Bernie and Martti and they said that they would be on 12 and 10 until the band goes out and then 17 for the rest of today. 75 again tonight and they will stay for Western EU on 75. More RTTY on the weekend but not continuously. The last operation will be Monday night on Johnston Island. The low band antennas will dome down during the day and only 20 an 10 will be available the last night. Everyone is fine but not getting much sleep. They had a good opening to EU on 20 last night and any time there is another good opening on any band they will work EU. Dear Editors, I spoke with Pertti on 75 and he said 160 at about 10Z 31 JAN. 12/17 tomorrow. [DX-NEWS] ah3D update #3
Dear Editors, I just spoke with Bernie and he asked me to pass the following info to all the bulletins: The team is experiencing multipath on 30 and 40 from EU which is making copy difficult. Slow down CW to make copy easier. The 160 antenna is going up and they might be on tonight but if not then tomorrow night. RTTY may start tomorrow on 15 and 20. The 12/17 antenna needs a truck to connect the feed line and will probably be on tomorrow. Everyone is fine, it is hot compared to Finland and the NE USA right now and they are feeling the heat. [DX-NEWS] AH3D on the air
Dear Editors, Bernie asked me to send out the following to all bulletins. Martti, Pertti, and Bernie arrived safely. The AH3D team has put up the tribander and will stay on 10 SSB until it closes followed by 15 and 20. They have a 30 meter dipole up and will have a 40 meter dipole up later tonight. Running the FT-1000 barefoot this afternoon they had S9+10 sigs on the West Coast. They will add the amps later. The 17/12 ant will go up tomorrow followed by the low band wires. [DX-NEWS] XR0X update 24 March
Dear Editors, This news just in from the San Felix Team. === The ship arrives Tuesday morning at 1230z so we should be back in Valparaiso on Friday morning at the latest. Depends on the Humboldt current, it is adverse to our course this time. We plan to start tearing down Monday morning, but will leave two high-band (20-10 including warc) stations on the air until the last possible moment. We plan to hit 160 for EU tonight (our final night, Chacabuco -the name of the ship- told us that they are arriving a day early). There are storm systems all over the area and the QRN was extreme last night and K5AB said that he could not hear any EU. Hopefully tonight ... There is a possibility that a few Q's could be missing from the posted logs. If you are not is the log on a certain band/mode don't panic. Of course try again in case your QSO is not a database transfer error, but there are a few QSOs that appear to have not been posted so there may be a reasonable explanation if you know that you had a clean contact and your QSO was not found. Every effort will be made to get the database confirmed correct ASAP before they leave. A final exact copy will be posted when the team gets back to land with a solid internet connection. === Cheers DRBILL K6GNX NA pilot --- Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems, etc DX-NEWS http://njdxa.org/dx-news DX-CHAT: http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news%40pro-usa.net/

Dear Editors, === Good news! The sat phone link is now working and the logs will be updated today. They are operating 3 SSB stations (one shared with RTTY), 3 CW stations and 6 meters. One CW generator failed and was replaced with a spare. Everyone is tired but in very high spirits and will be on 24 hours a day on all stations during the weekend. The piles are thinning out and this is the time to get those missing bands and modes. [DX-NEWS] some copy from San Felix
Dear Editors, Here is some news from Mike on San Felix. Plesae use any or all that you like. Cheers DRBILL K6GNX === Here's some info about the camps and the island. We chose the SSB location months ago, based on the Chliean chart of San Felix. It has to be one of the most fantastic radio locations in the world; wait until you see the photos. The antennas are near the edge of a 30-meter sheer rock cliff above the ocean, and they perform extremely well. The CW station is in the area that was formerly "off-limits" to us, the Commander gave us special permission to set up there, which was very generous because it turned out to be another world-class radio location. At the CW site, we are a little farther from the cliffs which are also a little lower but the antenna farm at CW is performing extremely well also, due to the slope of the island that favors all the major population centers, with all unobstructed take-offs over salt water. The stations are so far apart (and shielded by some higher land between them) that there is ZERO interference between CW and SSB and almost no interference between stations at the same location. This is probably also a function of the 756PROIIs which must have very quiet synthesizers -- thank you ICOM! The island is volcanic and very rugged in places; the high cliffs above the sea provide stunningly beautiful views of the Pacific, San Ambrosio, and the fascinating Cathedral of Peterborough rocks. The geologically complex cliffs, with their numerous lava tubes, channel the waves into thundering breakers and intersecting, dangerous rip currents. There are beautiful brown sand and black sand beaches, always deserted of course. The weather has been excellent, warm and dry during the day and cool and mostly clear at night. We had only one afternoon with light rain and fog, it blew out to sea and everything was dry again after a few hours of sun. Most of the team has chosen to sleep outside under the stars, which for an amateur astronomer such as myself is fantastic. The southern sky is rich and incredibly beautiful. We can see the Large Magellanic Cloud, a companion galaxy to our Milky Way, and Crux (the southern cross) and the associated Coalsack dark nebula are visible all night long, friendly companions when making the long walks to the operating sites. Becasue there are no lights on the island at night, our eyes become dark adapted quickly and the Milky Way blazes forth as most people will never see it. The Pacific here provides outstanding fish and small delicious lobsters. Several of the men stationed here with the Armada of Chile (their Navy) are excellent fishermen and outstanding cooks. They graciously shared their catch of corvina (a white fish) with us a few nights ago, and it had to be one of the best seafood meals I have ever tasted! 73 Mike N6MZ === --- Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems, etc DX-NEWS http://njdxa.org/dx-news DX-CHAT: http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news%40pro-usa.net/
[DX-NEWS] official press release for XR0X
Dear Editors, This press release was written by Mike N6MZ and is forwarded by Dr. Bill K6GNX, North American pilot. Cheers DRBILL K6GNX = The San Felix 2002 DXpedition is on schedule to hit the airwaves around March 17, with radio operations continuing for approximately 12- 14 days. Expedition leader Carlos, NP4IW/CE3AQI, arrived in Chile on Tuesday 5 March, and is busy making final preparations; the rest of the 13-person team will arrive later this week. Departure from Valparaiso is scheduled for 12 March, and the vessel is scheduled to make port at Isla Juan Fernandez (CE0Z) during the outbound voyage. Please see the expedition web site http://www.cordell.org/SFX for more information on frequencies and operating plans. Radio operations manager Mike, N6MZ, worked closely with the Ducie Island expedition team to coordinate frequencies and splits, given that both expeditions will be on the air simultaneously. The teams hope that this coordination will maximize the success of both operations. The web site will contain a Web Log QSO search and frequent news updates, both thanks to our USA pilot Dr. Bill, K6GNX, and our EU pilot Klaus, DL1XX. The San Felix 2002 DXpedition is being undertaken in conjunction with Cordell Expeditions (Robert Schmieder, KK6EK), a nonprofit organization that has carried out expeditions to remote sites for more than 20 years. Contributions made to the expedition through Cordell Expeditions are eligible for income tax deductions as a donation to a 501(c)(3) organization. Some expedition expenses will be quite large (for example, use of the Chilean Navy's helicopter), so your contributions are still needed and will be greatly appreciated. == --- Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems, etc DX-NEWS http://njdxa.org/dx-news DX-CHAT: http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives http://www.mail-archive.com/dx-news%40pro-usa.net/
