on bootup wrong keyboard layout is recognized

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  This is a regression.
I have two keyboard layouts activated, the Dvorak and the English US. The
Dvorak should be the default keyboard. That is the way I have it set up, and it
shows up in the task bar on top as En1, which is the Dvorak.
However, when I start to type, it starts in QUERTY.
  ??
To correct this, I go to the task bar (where it shows EN1, or Dvorak),
re-select the Dvorak, and then everything is fine.
  ??

I have another minor problem which should probably go on another bug, but
happened at the same time.
CTL-ALT-T doesn't bring up the terminal any more. No matter what keyboard I'm
using.

I'm not sure if this adds any context, but I was using a LibreOffice

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1241324] [NEW] openmotif application's window shrinks in Ubuntu 13.10

2013-10-17 Thread john ferrier
Public bug reported:

Nedit is a text editor based on Motif.

After I ugraded my OS from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10, I noticed some wierd
things related with Nedit's dialog window. For example, if I press
"ctrl+F" (shortcut for Finding string in file.) for the first time, the
dialog appears normal. However, as I use the finding function more and
more, the dialog window would become smaller and smaller.

So for me it seems something wrong with the new Unity in Ubuntu 13.10,
becuase I don't have such a problem in Ubuntu 13.04.

You can find Nedit in Ubuntu's Software Center.

This bug is very repeatable.

"ctrl+F" (shortcut for Finding string in file.) for the first time,
the dialog appears normal. However, as I use the finding function more
and more, the dialog window would become smaller and smaller.

So for me it seems something wrong with the new Unity in Ubuntu 13.10,
becuase I don't have such a problem in Ubuntu 13.04.

You can find Nedit in Ubuntu's Software Center.

  This bug is very repeatable.

Keyboard shortcuts to switch workspaces borked

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The keyboard shortcuts to change workspaces have been ctrl-alt-arrow
for a long time now. As of 13.10, the shortcuts for up/down have been
changed to Super-pgup/pgdn. This change makes it exceptionally
cumbersome to quickly switch between different workspaces to the
extent that it is essentially broken and one is limited to either
  vertical or horizontal workspaces.

Whereas one could previously cycle through all 4 workspaces in the
default 2x2 grid, this is now practically impossible without a level
of finger dexterity I doubt anyone short of a concert pianist
  possesses.

I realize that one could argue that this is not a bug, but rather an
"opinion". That would be naive, however, as using all four workspaces
with just keyboard shortcuts is not effectively broken.

The fix is easy. Either revert to ctr-alt-arrow or switch to super-
  arrow (in all four directions).

The currently 13.10 mix-and-match approach, however, is a usability
  nightmare.

Bug description:
This looks like a regression. Bug 88 describes what we now have
  in current trunk again.

  STR:

  1. Open 2 application windows, e.g. gnome-terminal
  2. Alt-tab to show desktop
  3. Click on gnome-terminal icon with 2 pips on the launcher

  Expected results:
Two windows are displayed in spread.

  Actual results:
One window is displayed in spread with another one still being there, the
outline appears on hover but the window itself is not displayed.

  ADDITION:

Furthermore "Show desktop" shows desktop on all workspaces which is not
desired behavior. This makes the issue even worse, because you can only use the
launcher and alt-tab to navigate between the windows which results in a big
usability bug.
  The following video demonstrates this:

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1241245] [NEW] non resizable window stuck on magnetic borders

2013-10-17 Thread dronus
Public bug reported:

On current 13.10 release, when trying to move around non resizable
windows (eg. system settings) they seem to react to magnetic borders.
Sometimes when the pointer hit the screen border while dragging and the
button is released then, the window is stuck and cannot be moved
anymore. No "grab hand" appears on pressing the mousebutton while on the
title bar anymore. Double clicking the title bar makes it movable
again.

So I guess the window reacts to the magnetic border, even if it is not
resizeable and no visual resize-effect is shown at all. But it behaves
as it would be enlarged to fullscreen or something after that, until it
is restored to normal state by double clicking the title bar.

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)

To reproduce: Start VirtualBox, select Windows 7 or Windows XP machine

as like there exists other panel.

I found that this problem appears when updated to 13.04. I used VB
version 4.2.12 that time. Updated to 4.2.14 then to 4.2.16, but
problem still exists. Tried Lubuntu, and this problem does not exist
there. Also this problem exists in Unity from official repository. So
I think it is general Unity bug.

  TEST CASE:
  1. Ensure mir is enabled on device, as described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/TouchTesting#Enable_MIR_by_default .
  2. Send an SMS to self.
  3. Wait for notification of message.
  4. Swipe open the messaging indicator.

  EXPECTED RESULT:
The message appears in minimized view.

displayed correctly in the messaging menu.

After a debug session with Lars, we verified that the icon was being
correctly sent from the the application and arriving correctly on the
  indicator-messages service.

According to Lars, the problem is that libmessaging-menu is packing
the icon in an additional gvariant, and then when unpacking indicator-
messages doesn't get the correct data.

sure. When using default icon themes, I have a normal speaker icon
(which does not work) but when I use Oxygen or Gnome icons, I get a
white box with a red circle and a slash through it.

2013-10-17 Thread gexplorer
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1219330 ***

I had the same problem. I also noticed that I couldn't write accents, so
I checked:

System settings/Text entry

And the "Input sources to use" list was empty. I added "Spanish" and I
was able to type in the dash again.

Bug description:
using ubuntu touch image 82 i see the session init consume about 10MB per
minute as long as the screen is on with Mir.
running the same session with surfaceflinger only consumes 1MB per minute.

in both cases the system starts to swap heavily at some point, making
  the UI unresponsive.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/6196223/ has the top output of a Mir session
after 30min, the UI just got completely unresponsive when this
  snapshot was taken.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/6196332/ is the top output of a surfaceflinger
session where the screen was off for about 10min

apparently the leak only occurs while the screen is on, it seems to be
permanently there but in the case of surfaceflinger it hits less hard.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1240595] Re: Unity launcher is gone after fullscreen windows are minimized!

2013-10-17 Thread Christopher Townsend
Hi Klavs,

Thank you for reporting this bug. This is very strange. I reproduced
the issue the first time I tried, but I have not been able to ever
since. I also tried on a different machine and could not reproduce.
Unfortunately, without being able to reproduce again, I'm unable to
debug the issue right now.

Does this happen every time for you? Which application(s) are you using
full screen? Are you using Ctrl-Super-Down to minimize the full screen
window? I'm going to mark this bug Incomplete pending your response.

Thanks!

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1240957] Re: Scrolling behaviour and window focus has changed and is inconsistent

2013-10-17 Thread Christopher Townsend
Hi Lem,

Thanks for reporting this bug. I believe this is due to some changes in
scrolling behavior in Gtk+3.0. I've been trying to work with the Gtk+3
upstream to fix some mouse wheel issues, but it's slow going.

** Package changed: unity (Ubuntu) => gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

Title:
Scrolling behaviour and window focus has changed and is inconsistent

Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I wasn't sure which package to file this bug against, but seeing as
it's a general desktop usability/consistency bug, the top level
desktop environment seemed like a good target.

On Ubuntu 13.10, AMD64, everything default (Unity 7 on X.org etc),
except for installing nvidia-319-updates, all current packages as of
  now (2013-10-17; unity 7.1.2+13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1), I now have
this behaviour which is different from Ubuntu versions up to 13.04,
and, is also inconsistent within itself. Here's what I've found:

The scrolling behaviour has changed, and seems to be different per
  application in Ubuntu 13.10.

The old behaviour (up to 13.04): mouse pointer above window would allow
scrolling, regardless of focus
Apps that use the old behaviour: libreoffice, firefox, gnome-terminal

The new behaviour (13.10): window must be focused, and pointer hovered above
to allow scrolling
Apps that use the new behaviour: nautilus, gedit, ubuntu-bug, software-updater

  STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  1. Open gEdit, press enter until the window is scrollable.
  2. Open Firefox, go to a webpage that's scrollable.
  3. Place gEdit above Firefox but off to the right side so gEdit's scrollbar
is still visible, have gEdit focused.
  4. Position mouse pointer above gEdit, observe scrollwheel causes gEdit
window to scroll.
  5. Move mouse pointer above Firefox but do not focus Firefox, observe
scrollwheel causes Firefox window to scroll.
  6. Focus Firefox, leave pointer above Firefox, observe scrollwheel causes
Firefox window to scroll
  7. Move mouse pointer above gEdit but do not focus gEdit, observe scrollwheel
FAILS to cause gEdit window to scroll.

This behaviour is the same with any combination of the above apps
(libreoffice, firefox, gnome-terminal all scrollable as long as pointer is
above them; nautilus, gedit, software-updater, ubunut-bug will not scroll
unless focused *and* have pointer above them)

What *SHOULD* happen, is that any window will scroll as long as the
pointer is above it. That's how it's always been in Ubuntu.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1240977] [NEW] some modal dialog windows such as chromium-browser get stuck/lost/do not raise if on different desktop

2013-10-17 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Long bug title, but I see some issues with dialog windows and unity (or
compiz) and multiple desktops.

I have 6 different desktops and typically leave a chromium-browser
running in one. I'll have full screen windows in the others, and

To reproduce my initial problem:
 * run a chromium-browser in one desktop
 * switch to a different desktop
 * get an alert (such as calender notice) from chromium
 * click on a different window (ie, "lose" that window)
 * try to find it

Clicking on the chromium icon in the launcher focuses the primary
chromium-browser window, which is not usable because the dialog was
modal.

I can see other similar issues even with 'ubuntu-bug's dialog windows.
 * run 'ubuntu-bug unity'. That openes one "Apport" window with "Collecting
problem information" and then another with 'Thanks for reporting'.
 * put both windows partially hidden by a different window (browser or
gnome-terminal, it doesnt matter)
 * try to click on the exposed portion of the initial Apport window. it will
not raise. If you can't see its title bar, and cant see the 'Thanks' window
(or do not know it even exists), then you cannot get it to raise.
 * Move the 'Thanks' window to a different desktop (alt-space to bring up the
menu). Then try clicking on the Apport icon on the launcher, and see that it
does nothing. Worse, if you switch to a different desktop (even the one with
the 'Thanks' window) it switches you back to the 'Apport' window and raises
that window, which is modal and thus cannot be used.

If you hvae lots of desktops and lots of windows, it can be very hard to
find the modal dialog. I've given up before and just killed chromium-
browser.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1240957] [NEW] Scrolling behaviour and window focus has changed and is inconsistent

2013-10-17 Thread Lem
Public bug reported:

I wasn't sure which package to file this bug against, but seeing as it's
a general desktop usability/consistency bug, the top level desktop
environment seemed like a good target.

On Ubuntu 13.10, AMD64, everything default (Unity 7 on X.org etc),
except for installing nvidia-319-updates, all current packages as of now
(2013-10-17; unity 7.1.2+13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1), I now have this
behaviour which is different from Ubuntu versions up to 13.04, and, is
also inconsistent within itself.

The new behaviour (13.10): window must be focused, and pointer hovered above to
allow scrolling
Apps that use the new behaviour: nautilus, gedit, ubuntu-bug, software-updater

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

1. Open gEdit, press enter until the window is scrollable.
2. Open Firefox, go to a webpage that's scrollable.
3. Place gEdit above Firefox but off to the right side so gEdit's scrollbar is
still visible, have gEdit focused.
4. Position mouse pointer above gEdit, observe scrollwheel causes gEdit window
to scroll.
5. Move mouse pointer above Firefox but do not focus Firefox, observe
scrollwheel causes Firefox window to scroll.
6. Focus Firefox, leave pointer above Firefox, observe scrollwheel causes
Firefox window to scroll
7. Move mouse pointer above gEdit but do not focus gEdit, observe scrollwheel
FAILS to cause gEdit window to scroll.

This behaviour is the same with any combination of the above apps (libreoffice,
firefox, gnome-terminal all scrollable as long as pointer is above them;
nautilus, gedit, software-updater, ubunut-bug will not scroll unless focused
*and* have pointer above them)

What *SHOULD* happen, is that any window will scroll as long as the
pointer is above it. That's how it's always been in Ubuntu.
