[Dx-packages] [Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu

Some news on this feature? It is my last major feature I want to see in

  IMPORTANT 1: Please don't post any "me too message"; use the "Does
  this bug affect you?" feature you can find a bit above this bug
  description on Launchpad.

  IMPORTANT 2: Do not post anything if you haven't read all comments to
  verify that your point hasn't been made. If you feel tempted to stop
  reading because there are too many messages, that is a strong
  indicator that you shouldn't add even more comments. Developers have a
  tough time to find anything if you post redundant stuff. So please
  abstain from doing that.

  =
  Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it that works.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
   [ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
  The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

  Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
  address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in
  the duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that
  tracks the implementation of this project.

  The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility:  Hidden/Always displayed
  ---

Title:
  Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to
  re-enable

Status in Ubuntu Documentation:
  In Progress
Status in “indicator-session” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was
  enabled and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I
  followed the instructions on how to reenable hibernate
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but
  the option is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk
  works.

  File exists with proper content and permissions:
  $ sudo ls -l
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Sep 29 18:52
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

  $ sudo cat
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  [Re-enable hibernate by default]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

  Solution found by Jeffery To (jefferyto) in comment #13 to enable
  hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  Then reboot and run 'killall indicator-session-service' in terminal
  from your session. For background see #13.

  However this is not persistent across reboots.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service memory leak and 100% CPU usage

2013-10-26 Thread florin
It is already some months since the Ubuntu computer gets unresponsive
and cannot be used because of this bug. Does anyone know how long it
could take until we see some permanent fix (disabling some program's
menu might be some kind of workaround, but it is not a solution)?
Thanks!

  it before my machine overheated, so I didn't attach a debugger to see
  why it was totally pegging out a CPU.

  I'm not sure if this adds any context, but I was using a LibreOffice
  spreadsheet and I could not insert a table because the menu had lost
  it's mind, and then I observed the overly loaded CPU a very short
  while after that.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1203888] Re: appindicator ignores menu entries after having sent the menu to the indicator

2013-10-26 Thread Brandon Williams
For application developers, I think a work-around to this problem might
be simply to call indicator.set_menu(menu) again after any call to
menu.append(item). Although it shouldn't be necessary, it works fine
with earlier versions of python-appindicator. Calling set_menu(menu)
with the same menu that is already registered seems to be OK.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 984916] Re: Java Swing applications do not work with appmenu

2013-10-26 Thread Hanine HAMZIOUI
Great!
#Jarded it would be nice to make a debian file available for users who don't
want to add a PPA to their software sources.
In my opinion, we should ask that Jayatana becomes a default package in
Ubuntu. Seems like Ubuntu developer barely care about Java desktop applications.
Eventually, look at this bash script that produces a Debian File from your
executable JAR file:

Bug description:
  Bug #618587 tracks integration of appmenu with SWT, but there appears
  to be nothing filed about integration with javax.swing.JMenuBar
  (mentioned at the bottom of bug #659931).

  Expected (at least ideal) behavior: when running Unity and giving
  focus to a JFrame with a JMenuBar, the menu bar is not displayed
  inside the frame, but corresponding menus are displayed in the global
  Unity menu.

  Actual behavior on 11.10: the menu bar is displayed inside the frame,
  and appmenu is empty.

  For comparison, the Mac OS X JRE automatically displays Swing menus in
  the native location. libjava-gnome-java is perhaps the place to put in
  such a fix; assuming the JRE itself is not modified, an application
  wishing to take advantage of the fix would probably need to try to
  load /usr/share/java/gtk.jar and (if present) call a simple "register"
  method.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1245040] [NEW] taking chromium-browser full-screen and then not doesn't repaint non-chromium-browser part of screen

2013-10-26 Thread Jeff Abrahamson
Public bug reported:

Making chromium-browser display full-screen (by hitting F11) and then
not (by hitting F11 again) does not repaint the part of the screen that
is no longer occupied by chromium-browser. The following events do
cause the non-chromium-browser part of the screen to repaint, as long as
they occur on the same screen as chromium-browser:

- click outside of chromium-browser
- cause a window other than chromium-browser to take focus (by mousing over it
or clicking it -- I use focus follows mouse)

In my dual-head setup, focusing a window on a different screen does not
cause a repaint.

If the mouse is over a pixel in which a non-chromium-browser window will
draw when F11 cancels full-screen mode, then the repaint happens
correctly.

This does not appear to happen in all applications. For example, gnome-
terminal also interprets F11 as full-screen, but this repaint problem
doesn't occur with gnome-terminal. (On the other hand, in the case of
gnome-terminal, if the mouse is over a chromium-browser pixel when F11
cancels full-screen, then gnome-terminal returns to normal size, then
seems to receive a maximize event.)

I am reporting all of the above in terms of compiz / unity, because I
suspect the bug(s) do not lie with apps that go full-screen but rather
have something to do with window manager / display manager events.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a
duplicate of bug 1208019, so it is being marked as such.

William: Thanks for looking into this. Btw, the eclipse package in
Ubuntu is also affected by this issue, comment #36 in bug 1208019
wonders if it might not be picked up by the blacklist.

  Since upgrade of ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10 a self installed installation of

  This makes Eclipse useless since there are common actions that can not be
activated otherwise.

  I start eclipse from the shell with

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-10-26 Thread fincsi
The same annoying bug here. Updated ta 13.10 yesterday, and previous
.pkla has no effect anymore. Editing it, and restarting indicator-
session-service fixes it. But doesn't persist between reboots...

Title:
  Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to
  re-enable

Status in Ubuntu Documentation:
  In Progress
Status in “indicator-session” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was
  enabled and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I
  followed the instructions on how to reenable hibernate
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but
  the option is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk
  works.

  File exists with proper content and permissions:
  $ sudo ls -l
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Sep 29 18:52
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

  $ sudo cat
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  [Re-enable hibernate by default]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

  Solution found by Jeffery To (jefferyto) in comment #13 to enable
  hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  Then reboot and run 'killall indicator-session-service' in terminal
  from your session. For background see #13.

  However this is not persistent across reboots.
