[Dx-packages] [Bug 739184] Re: [Libreoffice] Mnemonics do not work in Unity

2013-11-09 Thread Eric TF Bat
Confirming that the workaround from comment #52 works, making the
Alt+key shortcuts ("mnemonics", if you must abuse the English language)
work happily in Unity in Ubuntu 13.04.

To recap and update slightly, do this:

1. Completely remove LibreOffice: sudo apt-get purge libreoffice*
2. Go to www.libreoffice.org and download the correct .deb.tar.gz for your OS,
either 32 or 64 bit.
3. Unzip the file.
4. Change to the DEBS directory in the unzipped archive: cd [name of
newly-created directory]/DEBS
5. Install every one of the sebs as superuser: sudo dpkg -i *.deb

To test, at the prompt type libreoffice and press Tab. As of 10
November 2013, the above process installs a program called
libreoffice4.1, but presumably the name will change with the version.

I can report that:
- unlike the standard LO, this one responds when you press Alt+F, Alt+E and so
on;
- it also handles the defined shortcuts as expected, for example Ctrl+D is fill
down (which it isn't in OpenOffice, unless you change it - I hated that!);
- unlike standard LO with the libreoffice-gtk package removed, this does allow
the window to work properly (eg maximise, minimise, etc) and uses the proper
Open dialog box and so on;
- unlike OpenOffice, this doesn't have the irritating display bug where every
item you select from a dropdown or type in an edit field remains and the fields
get steadily darker as they're used because, apparently, the function to clear
the rectangle before updating it is broken -- this may be an NVIDIA issue, but
it's irritating nonetheless and I'm glad it's gone.
- the menus aren't integrated with the Macintosh-like top bar of Unity, which I
don't care about but YMMV.

Only downside appears to be the icons for the software, which look like
a standard Windows 3.1-era "text file" icon. Meh, I can live with a
little ugliness.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1245473] Re: Binding ctrl+shift, alt+shift, etc for switching keyboard layout makes shortcuts with ctrl+shift, etc not working in any program

2013-11-09 Thread Lockal
Highly important for blender. Blender uses all kind of keyboard
shortcuts: ctrl+alt+key, ctrl+shift+key, ctrl+alt+key,
ctrl+alt+shift+key, control+space, shift+space, alt+space,
ctrl+alt+space... There is an alternative way to get access to these
functions, but shortcuts are essential in blender (like in vim). List of
keyboard shortcuts in blender (only for 2 modes, while blender has about
10 different modes):

[Dx-packages] [Bug 987060] Re: massive memory leak in unity-panel-service and hud-service when invoking the hud on Firefox profiles with large amounts of bookmarks

2013-11-09 Thread David Turner
Gimp seems to be causing lots of problems. Right now unity-panel-
service is sitting at around 343 MB (it was in the 200s a few minutes
ago after running gimp for a little while, but re-opening it increased
the memory by about 100MB). It seems whenever the menu is accessed it
increases memory usage slightly. I should also point out that the menu
has started to behave very sluggish, and using up 100% of one of my
cores.

Gedit also seems to do this while editing either lots, or very large
files.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2013-11-09 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
You know, if they could at least do post #335, it would make up a lot
for the inconveniences of the title bar being integrated into the top-
panel.

Due to "Title Bar Integrated in top-panel", these additional steps are required
to minimize and application (using the mouse):
1) Click on application window you want to minimize
2) Hover your mouse all the way to the top-left panel (that doesn't show you a
minimize button until you hover over it)
3) Click a very tiny red circle with a "X" (why do precise an effort for my
tastes)

Now, if they'd grant post #335, you could click on a very blunt fat icon
(require less precise effort) that's
1) Visible even if the application doesn't have focus.
2) All three of the steps listed above could be achieved with less mouse
movement:
 a. You don't have to mouse to the unfocused window and click it to make it
gain focus
 b. If the window you are trying to minimize doesn't have focus, you have
one location that both
  i. Gives it focus
 ii. Minimizes it

This is so clear for everyone to see. But someone (in control), at this
point, is too proud to admit that this is indeed a clear ENHANCEMENT.
Post #335 could be implemented in about 15 minutes and put this bug to
rest once and for all.

And absolute no one would complain about this enhancement to the degree
that everyone here is complaining about the enhancement not being there!

  mlaverdiere's futher addition:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/733349/comments/2

  My suggestion would be to modify the interaction-design/process like
  this (*=my modification proposal/2 cents!):

  1) start it, if it hasn't been started yet;
  *2) restore it, if it is minimized;
  *3) focus the app, if it's started, not minimized and has not the focus yet;
  4) spread windows (of app), if app is focused and has multiple windows open;
  *5) minimize it if it is in spread-mode (see 4).

  Note that this bug has over 300 comments and several working but
  rejected patches. This means that this feature probably will never
  land in official Unity! So if you want it, you have to use a patched
  version of Unity.

  There is a working patch for 13.04 ( from comment #322,
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-
  design/+bug/733349/+attachment/3573380/+files/minimize.patch ).
  Somebody should set up a PPA (and note it here) to make it easy to

[Dx-packages] [Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2013-11-09 Thread Sam Lesher
Please reconsider adding this feature. It is the biggest factor keeping
me from embracing Unity as my daily desktop environment.

  Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

Status in Canonical Design:

Status in Unity:
  Won't Fix
Status in Unity Tweak Tool:
  Won't Fix
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  What I do miss in Unity is the possibility to click on the app. icon on the
Unity launcher bar to minimize all windows of that application, not only to
launch/restore it.
  mlaverdiere's futher addition:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/733349/comments/2

  My suggestion would be to modify the interaction-design/process like
  this (*=my modification proposal/2 cents!):

  1) start it, if it hasn't been started yet;
  *2) restore it, if it is minimized;
  *3) focus the app, if it's started, not minimized and has not the focus yet;
  4) spread windows (of app), if app is focused and has multiple windows open;
  *5) minimize it if it is in spread-mode (see 4).

  Note that this bug has over 300 comments and several working but
  rejected patches. This means that this feature probably will never
  land in official Unity! So if you want it, you have to use a patched
  version of Unity.

  There is a working patch for 13.04 ( from comment #322,
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-
  design/+bug/733349/+attachment/3573380/+files/minimize.patch ).
  Somebody should set up a PPA (and note it here) to make it easy to
  install the patched version.

Same here. bluetooth-applet is just missing. And many problems getting
bluetooth devices to work that used to be just working in 13.04!

  does not even open nautilus or a file browser to explore the device.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1249608] Re: When opening fullscreen windows, window buttons disappear

2013-11-09 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Still not entirely clear, but let me offer this and you can confirm if
this is your problem.

(1) Open a terminal.
(2) Maximize the terminal window using the "maximize" button or
control-super-up key.
(3) Make the terminal window fullscreen using the F11 key.
(4) Do something in the terminal.
(5) Un-fullscreen the terminal using the F11 key again.

At this point the window controls normally present in a maximized window
do not get drawn.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 793450] Re: Calendar doesn't show today's date until opened a second time today

  3) Open the calendar applet by clicking the clock. Although the date in the
text field is correct, the graphic calendar still shows the date at which you
either originally logged in, or clicked the calendar before.
  4) Hide it, and show it once more. The calendar now shows the correct date.

  The conflicting visual data can be very confusing if you only summon
  the calendar to find out what day it is. (I don't get much sunlight.)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1249531] Re: RV350 Radeon 9550 not supported by Unity 3D in Saucy

2013-11-09 Thread Elven Decker
This was not a clean install... The hard drive (before 10.04) was
associated with an nvidia card. I see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bugs?field.tag
=possible-manual-nvidia-install in the tags, and maybe this could be the
root cause.

Don't work on this until I report back in... I'm going to do a search
and destroy on all things nvidia to see if this fixes the problem.

Thanks

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1249608] Re: When opening fullscreen windows, window buttons disappear

2013-11-09 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Fullscreen means the buttons are supposed to disappear. Fullscreen is
not the same as maximized.

In the attached screenshot the window appears to be maximized, not
fullscreen. Can you please confirm this is the case?

I think this still appears at Unity 7.1.2 in OS: Saucy 13.10 64bit

  "Show copy dialog" right click launcher entry doesn't work (on

Bug description:
  Impact:
  the nautilus copy dialog don't get properly focussed by unity

  Test Case:
  - log into an unity session
  - copy a not too small file (so you have time to interact with the copy
dialog)
  - minimize the copy dialog
  - right click on the corresponding unity-launcher's icon, and pick "show copy
dialog"
  -> the dialog should be displayed

  Regression testing:
  Check that there is no focus issue with that dialog and the launcher

  --

  While copying a large (8 gig) file across an SMB network, I minimized
  it. The right click on the Nautilus Unity bar showed a "Show copy
  dialog" item. Clicking on that item did nothing. The only way to get
  the dialog back up was to open one of the two minimized Nautilus
  windows and then minimize the one on top. After that minimize, then
  the copy dialog was displayed on top of the other Nautilus window. I
  couldn't find any way to get the copy dialog back on screen without
  clicking around somewhat aimlessly displaying and minimizing Nautilus
  windows until it appeared. The "Show copy dialog" right-click menu
  appeared to have no affect.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1228360] Re: No clock in menu bar and can't edit Clock settings

2013-11-09 Thread Freeman
Same problem here, clean installation of Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy and after
the upgrades the clock disappears but the rest of the icons are still
there. As stated in a previous post, running 'killall unity-panel-
service' will bring the time indication back to the panel. Let's hope it
stays after reboot...
