Title:
A single misbehaving application using too much memory can hang the
whole system into unrecoverable unresponsiveness, forcing you to turn
  power off

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
It is too easy to put the whole system into an unusable state. Just try the
following:
  - figure aout a webpage which is a little heavy to render in Google Chrome
(just a page with a few hundred images will do)
  - open that same page in several tabs in Google Chrome, e.g. by ctrl+clicking
the same link a few times.
(I guess any other browser will do)

Even though there is an issue in Chrome not detecting and preventing such a
sudden explosion of memory usage (warning the user and letting him cancel or
continue), the window manager MUST always maintain the responsiveness to mouse
and keyboard. No matter how disastrous a sudden increase in cpu or memory
consumption an application may have, it must never compromise the whole system
stability.
You should always be able to:
  - click on the offending application's window's close icon, so as to close
the application (and if it doesn't respond, be prompted whether to kill it)
  - open a terminal to kill the offending process

Not only I couldn't do any of those as the system would not respond to
keyboard nor mouse (while it was probably swapping huge amounts of
memory, which I infer from high disk activity and relatively low cpu
activity) but I couldn't even hit ctrl+alt+f1 to open a virtual
terminal and kill some process, because most keystrokes wouldn't be
  caught.

It can't be accepted that a single misbehaving application can put the
whole system in such a state that the only thing you can do is a
  hardware power off.

I don't know whether this is an issue in the kernel, X.org, the window
  manager, or all of them.

Title:
Notifications use the wrong text size

Status in Notify OSD:
  New
Status in “notify-osd” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
The Universal Access control panel lets you change the system font
size. If you do this, notify-osd does not respect the selected size -
it seems to pick up the second-to-last font size selected, but not the
last (current) font size selected by the universal access control
  panel.

  To reproduce:
  1) Note the font size of a notification (trigger by adjusting brightness on a
laptop display
  2) Open the universal access control panel (e.g. by searching for 'font' in
the dash)
  3) In the "Seeing" tab, change "Text size" from "Normal" to "Small". Note
that the text size in open applications and in the panel changes
  4) Trigger a notification. Note the size of the notification - it is the same
as the size of the notification in step 1
  4) Change the text size back to "Normal"
  5) Trigger a notification. Note the size - it is small

  Expected results:
  1) The notification in step 4 is small, since that's the system font size
  2) The notification in step 5 is back to normal, since that's the system font
size

This behavior seems consistent - the size of the notification always
seems to be the size of the previously-selected system font, not the
  current system font.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

Guys, can't we close this bug now that an update fixed it? No need for
further discussion as I see it.

Title:
Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to
  re-enable

Status in Ubuntu Documentation:
  Confirmed
Status in “indicator-session” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Summary:

The issues stopped appearing from 2013-11-07 onwards. The menu is
built correctly now, but it is unknown which version of an updated
package from that timeframe actually fixed the menu issue.

The documentation needs to be updated with the instructions from the
solution below to reenable hibernation in 13.10.

  -

Solution to reenable to hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

[Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

[Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was enabled
and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I followed the

[Dx-packages] [Bug 968533] Re: Alt-tab to Firefox sends Firefox to 100% CPU; unity-panel-service to 80% CPU and hud-service to 20-80% CPU

@pieleric If Ubuntu 13.10 you have, new bug ticket you should make.
Related but not the same as this Ubuntu 13.04 bug, it is.

I've been seeing UI hangs after switching tabs in Firefox, and
switching from other applications to Firefox.

It can take 3-8 seconds to change *tab*. During this time the CPU is
maxed out; typical output from 'top' during this period shows 'hud-
service' and 'unity-panel-service' combined using about the same CPU
  as Firefox itself:

   100 10.4 26:07.73 firefox
53 0.6 6:14.86 hud-service
38 1.5 6:42.14 unity-panel-service

I suspect that the change is causing a (an inefficient) re-index
related to updated menu structures. (Eg. something like the history
menu, although I can't see what it is as don't currently have a menu
  bar).

It makes no sense to put "Restart" in the power-cog menu only to have

[Dx-packages] [Bug 938758] Re: AutoHidden launcher reveal sensitivity adjustment should allow disabling push-past for wacom tablets

2013-12-06 Thread Martin von Gagern
Almost a year later, and two release cycles. I observe this problem on
ubuntu 13.10. I consider it a real papercut kind of problem, beacuse if
some new user accidentially hides the launcher, he might not know how to
get it back if he already closed the settings window.

Since tablets are set to absolute, one cannot invoke a hidden launcher

End result, I cannot use autohide with a wacom tablet.

Expected behavior: Maximum sensitivity == disable pushpast so that
behavior is pre-12.04 where simple edge-detect reveals.

Bug 1116289 made the BT indicator disappear when there is no hardware.
However, with that version I now also have it disappear when my
existing BT hardware is merely disabled. I. e. I disable BT from the
indicator, then it disappears, leaving me no obvious method to turn it
back on again. I can re-enabble it in control-center, and then the
  indicator comes back.

I think when it sees no actual BT hardware it ought to check rfkill
whether there is disabled BT hardware:

  $ grep -r . /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/{type,state,soft,persistent}
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/type:bluetooth
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state:1
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/soft:0
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/persistent:1

After disabling BT from the indicator, "soft" changes to 1:

  $ grep -r . /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/{type,state,soft,persistent}
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/type:bluetooth
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state:0

2013-12-06 Thread Stephen M. Webb
This bug describes an error when trying to run new version of graphics
drivers on too-old versions of the kernel. Are you sure you are seeing
the same bug?

If you're not seeing the same error message ("Error: command
['/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test', '-p', '-f'] failed with exit code
-6: Gen6+ requires Kernel 3.6 or later.") then reopening this bug is the
wrong thing to do. Please open a new bug so we can get the relevant
configuration information.

If you're getting the same bug, you do not have an up-to-date system.
Ubuntu 13.10 runs Linux 3.11, not 3.4.

Bug description:
Semi-maximizing a window and then restoring it does not return the
window back to it's original place before semi-maximizing it.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Place window somewhere near the left side of the screen.
  2. Press Ctrl-Super-Right to semi-maximize the window to the right side of
the screen.
  3. Click the restore button.

Observe the window is restored to near right side of the screen
instead of back where it was originally near the left.

Note: Dragging the window to the left/right edge to semi-maximize
*will* restore the window back to its original position. It's only
  the shortcut that causes this.

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Hud can't work properly with Thunderbird (11).

Happens all the times. Start Thunderbird, press alt, try a command
like "preferences", nothing is shown. Open edit from global menu,
press alt, try same command, it appears (edit-preferences). Close
Thunderbird, repeat, still not working. Can't say if the same happens
for Firefox, because global menu don't work there, but it used to do
the same in the earlier versions I tested.

Works fine with Gnome applications like evince and file-roller.

I selected "I don't know" because if I select package "HUD" from the
chooser, Launchpad gives me an error (???)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 998285] Re: Tapping alt-tab switches between windows of the same application sometimes

2013-12-06 Thread stef
This issue creeped up on me in 13.10. It's SPER
annoying!!

Let me explain. It's the inconsistency that's the problem. It took me
several month to even conceptionalize why I am subliminally irritated by
Unity. I use alt-tab and alt-backtick all the time to navigate between
apps and windows. For the most part it works well but after a alt-
backtick the behavior of alt-tab changes. Even after month this is never
what I expect. It's subjectively totally erratic. When I press alt-tab I
always want the "previous app." I have this intention a lot. I need a
"get me to the previous app" key, not a "sure back to previous app in
most of the cases" key.

I get the idea of focusing on the last window no matter what app it was
from. This feature may be a ok o the alt-backtick key. It actually
makes a lot of sense there because I almost neve switch between windows
of the same app after switching the app. For this reason "take me to the
last window" feature would usually not interfer with what I expect the
button does.

I think way more people would complain about this if it wasn't sucha
subliminal annoyance.

Title:
Tapping alt-tab switches between windows of the same application
  sometimes

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Normally, tapping alt-tab switches between applications, and tapping
alt-` switches between windows of the front-most application. However,
if the two front-most windows are from the same application, then alt-
tab will switch between these windows instead, instead of moving to
the second-front-most application. Hence, in this case, alt-tab
  duplicates the action of alt-`.

  Here is an example:
  1) create the stack with two nautilus windows at the top, e.g. Nautilus
window 1 (N1), Nautilus window 2 (N2), and Firefox window (F1) (but you can use
any applications). Create the stack either by [clicking F1, N2, N1] or
[switching to Nautilus with alt-tab, then alt-` to the other Nautilus window].
  2) Tap alt-tab.

What happens: I switch to the other nautilus window.

What I expected: to switch to the other application (i.e. Firefox).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2013-12-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
oriolpoint, Notify OSD implements the FreeDesktop Notifications spec,
and also provides synchronous feedback for volume and brightness (and
soon, for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi hardware switches as well). It is quite
common for a computer program to implement a specification, and also to
do other things.

Bug description:
I've been seeing UI hangs after switching tabs in Firefox, and
switching from other applications to Firefox.

It can take 3-8 seconds to change *tab*. During this time the CPU is
maxed out; typical output from 'top' during this period shows 'hud-
service' and 'unity-panel-service' combined using about the same CPU
  as Firefox itself:

53 0.6 6:14.86 hud-service
38 1.5 6:42.14 unity-panel-service

I suspect that the change is causing a (an inefficient) re-index
related to updated menu structures. (Eg. something like the history
menu, although I can't see what it is as don't currently have a menu
  bar).
