[Dx-packages] [Bug 976100] Re: Time and Date Settings don't load in Ubuntu Precise and newer with Gnome Classic

2014-01-24 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Ok, thanks. Once upstream has approved this I think it would be fine to
get into the archive. I'll note that the patch attached to this bug is
different than the one in the upstream merge request. Since trusty will
get that bug fix once it is merged, I am ging to unsubscribe ubuntu-
sponsors for now, as there is nothing to sponsor. Please feel free to
resubscribe if needed (but as I said, trusty should just get the fix
through normal processes).

It is. I've proposed a branch upstream:
https://code.launchpad.net/~rtandy/indicator-datetime/lp976100/+merge/200209

> I tried to reproduce in a VM but the gnome fallback session seems
pretty broken atm. The 2D one had a lot of missing indicators

Probably bug 1256961. Give it a couple of minutes and it finishes
loading.

> and the 3D didn't come up right at all (ie, the unity launcher showed
up on the left even though I had top and bottom panels).

That's bug 1232299. The workaround is to log into unity first, let
Compiz process its upgrade scripts, and then log into Flashback
afterwards. I haven't had time to propose a Compiz patch yet, sorry.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1272540] [NEW] Global menu disappear with mouse button hold

2014-01-24 Thread Edwin Pujols
Public bug reported:

Another small quirk on Unity 7.

*Steps*

- Open an app, say Firefox.
- Unmaximize the window, so that the window buttons _do not_ appear on the
panel.
- Move the mouse pointer to the left corner.
- Now, hold the primary mouse button and move it to the right, keeping the
pointer inside the panel.

You'll notice that when the pointer reaches the first menu entry "File"
(or whatever) the menu starts flickering on the mouse movement. If you
release the primary button _in between_ the first menu entry and the
window title, you'll notice that the menu disappears and the only way to
make it reappear (with the mouse) is to move the pointer outside the
panel and then back inside the panel.

(It's very much a trivial bug, but kind of surprising :)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 976100] Re: Time and Date Settings don't load in Ubuntu Precise and newer with Gnome Classic

2014-01-24 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Is this still an issue on trusty? I tried to reproduce in a VM but the
gnome fallback session seems pretty broken atm. The 2D one had a lot of
missing indicators and the 3D didn't come up right at all (ie, the unity
launcher showed up on the left even though I had top and bottom panels).

sponsor for 12.04. Marking Won't Fix. Feel free to adjust if someone can

Title:
December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
December 2013 and January 2014 updates have caused numerous usability
problems. Some disappear, then reappear. All the following are
  current.

  1. Firefox and Thunderbird no longer find internet connection when
connected wirelessly. System reports wireless connection is
established and working, but neither FF nor TB cab find it. Wired
connection works OK. This problem first appeared in early December
and has continued to date (January 24, 2014).

  2. Booting HP Pavilion dv6 laptop fails when external power is
connected. Boots OK on battery alone. Bug reported. Problem
  appeared after January 1, 2014.

  3. Firefox loses tab history -- it's still there, but inaccessable
  unless I reboot. Long-standing issue.

  4. Right-click no longer works in Firefox. Can't copy or cut-and-
  paste.

  5. After running for more than a few hours, Firefox window frames
become transparent and Firefox no longer works.

  6. When using LibreOffice, screen updates cause brief, but very
annoying, display flashing or blanking. Blanking is sometimes
extended up to ten seconds. (AMD A-8 quad-core processor with 6 GB
  main memory!). Very alarming.

  7. Lost ability to scroll, etc. using "gestures" shortly after
  January 1, 2014.

  8. Unity magically appearing/disappearing scroll tabs replaced
Gnome's hard scrollbars. That's not nice. I don't like them.

  9. Firefox never, ever restores automagically (though it always did
in 10.04 LTS and does on Linux Mint). This issue has been outstanding
for two years, or more. No biggie, but it's annoying and very
unprofessional. Two bugs reported on this vs. Oneric! C'mon, people.
Surely you can do better than that.

This system is single-boot Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Gnome 3/Unity on an ext4
filesystem, installed about August 6, 2012 and kept up to date.

What happened to the concept that 12.04 was to be a "stable" release?
This is the most unstable *n*x OS release I have ever used since 1999
  (SuSE 5 through 8, Ubuntu 8.04, 10.04, Mint 13 and 14). This nonsense
makes Microsoft Windows almost seem desirable. I also use Linux Mint
14 on other "boxes", an HP Pavilion dv7 and a Dell Optiplex GX620.
None of these issues affect Mint 14, although it is based on Ubuntu
12.04 LTS (Mint 14 has its own issues, but none affect usability like
  these do). Unity sucks stumpwater.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-01-24 Thread octalman
And,

11. Thunderbird loses messages and/or message contents. The message
appears in the summary pane, but when I click on it to read the message,
the content is from a previously read message. This is a new problem,
just experienced today (January 24). I can read the messages on my
Android 'phone, but not on the computer using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Bug description:
December 2013 and January 2014 updates have caused numerous usability
problems. Some disappear, then reappear. All the following are
  current.

  1. Firefox and Thunderbird no longer find internet connection when
connected wirelessly. System reports wireless connection is
established and working, but neither FF nor TB cab find it. Wired
connection works OK. This problem first appeared in early December
and has continued to date (January 24, 2014).

  2. Booting HP Pavilion dv6 laptop fails when external power is
connected. Boots OK on battery alone. Bug reported. Problem
  appeared after January 1, 2014.

  3. Firefox loses tab history -- it's still there, but inaccessable
  unless I reboot. Long-standing issue.

  4. Right-click no longer works in Firefox. Can't copy or cut-and-
  paste.

  5. After running for more than a few hours, Firefox window frames
become transparent and Firefox no longer works.

  6. When using LibreOffice, screen updates cause brief, but very
annoying, display flashing or blanking. Blanking is sometimes
extended up to ten seconds. (AMD A-8 quad-core processor with 6 GB
  main memory!). Very alarming.

  7. Lost ability to scroll, etc. using "gestures" shortly after
  January 1, 2014.

  8. Unity magically appearing/disappearing scroll tabs replaced
Gnome's hard scrollbars. That's not nice. I don't like them.

  9. Firefox never, ever restores automagically (though it always did
in 10.04 LTS and does on Linux Mint). This issue has been outstanding
for two years, or more. No biggie, but it's annoying and very
unprofessional. Two bugs reported on this vs. Oneric! C'mon, people.
Surely you can do better than that.

This system is single-boot Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Gnome 3/Unity on an ext4
filesystem, installed about August 6, 2012 and kept up to date.

What happened to the concept that 12.04 was to be a "stable" release?
This is the most unstable *n*x OS release I have ever used since 1999
  (SuSE 5 through 8, Ubuntu 8.04, 10.04, Mint 13 and 14). This nonsense
makes Microsoft Windows almost seem desirable. I also use Linux Mint
14 on other "boxes", an HP Pavilion dv7 and a Dell Optiplex GX620.
None of these issues affect Mint 14, although it is based on Ubuntu
12.04 LTS (Mint 14 has its own issues, but none affect usability like
  these do). Unity sucks stumpwater.

Synaptic history below. Yesterday, I passed the time to make appear the mouse
pointer. So I've not seen this bug.
The way to get back a visible cursor for the mouse was by setting :
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.cursor active false

The bug affects :
LibreOffice, Gedit, Teminal, Image viewer, Gimp, Inkscape, Audacity, Brasero

But not :
Firefox, Thunderbird, Frescobaldi, JOSM, vlc, Scribus, Rhythmbox,
gnome-system-monitor, Rosegarden

A little more, as far as I have texted:
* Contextual menus are still available.
* Short keys are working.
* In Gedit, the problem occurs when opening gedit by clicking a document, by
opening gedit in the launche, by calling gedit in the terminalr. But not by
calling gedit as root in a terminal. In this last case, the main menu is not on
the top of the screen but in into the gedit windown.

Bug description:
Ubuntu/Unity uses GNOME Control Center as the application to configure
the Unity session. We've made a lot of changes appropriate for Ubuntu
and Unity (61 patches) which makes it hard to maintain and creates a
conflict for Ubuntu GNOME to use the control center. Unity 7 will be
replaced by Unity 8 in the future which has a new settings interface.

So we can continue to remain on the current version of GNOME Control
Center but allow Ubuntu GNOME to continue to update we will create a
new project lp:unity-control-center which is a copy of GNOME Control
Center 3.6 but with appropriate renaming so both can be installed.

A number of packages that refer to gnome-control-center need to be
updated to refer to unity-control-center (see bug tasks).

  * Use unity-control-center if it is available. (LP: #1257505)

  [ Ted Gould ]
  * Own the server capabilities so we clean it up.

  [ Lars Uebernickel ]
  * Don't write 'interested-media-players' on startup
IndicatorSound.Service read that gsettings key and inserted the
players desktop ids into a MediaPlayerList, which emits "player-
added" every time a player is added. This patch makes the service
keep track of whether players are added because it is syncing the
key or when a player appeared on the bus. .

  send -h string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:1 "bluetooth" "enable"
  -i bluetooth

In current implementation, both Summary and Body text didn't get
  updated.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The risk should be minimal, the patch should only affect "x
-canonical-private-synchronous" interface. This interface is only used
in brightness and volume hotkey, and layout is different.

   * The patch is already tested in OEM projects.

  [Other Info]

  *** Original bug description:

When you send a notification in Synchronous with another, the both
Summary and Body text doesn't get updated.

  As an example:

  while true; do
  notify-send "first title" "first subtitle" -i dialog-info -h
string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:test
  sleep 1
  notify-send "second title" "second subtitle" -i dialog-error -h
string:x-canonical-private-synchronous:test
  sleep 1
  done

If you run the above, what you should see is the Icon changing, but the
summary/body text staying the same.
Is this expected behaviour from the libnotify library? Or is this an
overlooked feature?

  Regards
  Iain

Bug description:
Ubuntu/Unity uses GNOME Control Center as the application to configure

Title:
Indicator disappears entirely when disabling / turning off bluetooth

Status in “indicator-bluetooth” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Bug 1116289 made the BT indicator disappear when there is no hardware.
However, with that version I now also have it disappear when my
existing BT hardware is merely disabled. I. e. I disable BT from the
indicator, then it disappears, leaving me no obvious method to turn it
back on again. I can re-enabble it in control-center, and then the
  indicator comes back.

I think when it sees no actual BT hardware it ought to check rfkill
whether there is disabled BT hardware:

  $ grep -r . /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/{type,state,soft,persistent}
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/type:bluetooth
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state:1
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/soft:0
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/persistent:1

After disabling BT from the indicator, "soft" changes to 1:

  $ grep -r . /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/{type,state,soft,persistent}
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/type:bluetooth
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state:0
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/soft:1
  /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/persistent:1

In UnityCore/ResultIterator.h, we have things such as:

friend inline bool const operator<(const ResultIterator& lhs, const
  ResultIterator& rhs)

  and

  bool const IsLast();

Declaring a function to return a const value is meaningless, and the
compiler ignores the const. Moreover, with -Wall -Wextra, gcc emits a
warning about the ignored const and, with -Werror, produces an error.

The const return values need to be non-const.

  1. Open "System Settings" > "Time & Date".
  2. Change the time zone. (And if bug 1102890 has been fixed, choose "Apply".)
  3. Look at the clock in the menu bar.
  4. In the "Clock" tab, toggle any of the "Weekday", "Date and month", or
"Time in other locations" options.
  5. In the "Clock" tab, toggle any of the "12/24-hour time", "Seconds", or
"Time in auto-detected locations" options.

  What happens:
  3. The clock still shows the time in the previous time zone.
  4. The clock still shows the time in the previous time zone.
  5. The clock updates to the new time zone.

  What should happen:
  3. The clock shows the time in the new time zone, just like System Settings
does.

This bug was previously fixed as bug 735445. On some systems the bug
is masked by bug 1244680, where the clock freezes instead.

A PPA for testing is https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/+archive
  /unity-control-center

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1260526] Re: keyboard entry not working correctly

2014-01-24 Thread Alan
UPDATE:

In the past, to enter Unicode characters, the process that worked for me
was...

press and hold Ctrl+Shift+U, type 00+, release
Ctrl+Shift+U, character is entered

reported bug because that no longer works.

Some searching led me to other methods. The following works to type
Unicode...

press Ctrl+Shift+U and release, type 4 char hex Unicode value, press
enter, character is entered

so... bug still extant, original method to enter Unicode characters
doesn't work

work around found and my need to enter Unicode chars is resolved. ✓

Bug description:
keyboard doesn't work correctly for two functions

  1) Manual entry of UniKey characters no longer works

In all applications Ctrl+Shift U0 no longer enters UniKey
characters regardless of application; terminal, Firefox, Chrome,
  gedit, LO Write, etc...

  2) When viewing workspaces with WinKey+S activating a workspace with
the enter key works only with the enter key on the home row. The enter
key on the numeric keypad no longer works to activate the selected
  workspace.
