[Dx-packages] [Bug 1272448] Re: December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

2014-03-11 Thread octalman
Issue No. 10 has been resolved, but a new issue has appeared and an old
one (2) reappeared:

11. There appears to be a slow memory leak that manifests itself with
Firefox (though it may be elsewhere). When the system is left powered
up for an extended period (over a week, as observed in this case), one
or more of the windows become non-responsive.

12. System will not restart when shut down -- bootstrap fails with a
green screen (GSOD?). Power (the battery) must be removed to be able to
shut down and restart. This is similar to, but different in some
details, from previous shutdown/restart issues which appeared in
December, 2013. Formerly issue (2).

Issues 1 and 9 remain unresolved.

Title:
December 2013 updates to 12.04 LTS cause multiple problems

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
December 2013 and January 2014 updates have caused numerous usability
problems. Some disappear, then reappear. All the following are
  current.

  1. Firefox and Thunderbird no longer find internet connection when
connected wirelessly. System reports wireless connection is
established and working, but neither FF nor TB cab find it. Wired
connection works OK. This problem first appeared in early December
and has continued to date (January 24, 2014).

  2. Booting HP Pavilion dv6 laptop fails when external power is
connected. Boots OK on battery alone. Bug reported. Problem
  appeared after January 1, 2014.

  3. Firefox loses tab history -- it's still there, but inaccessable
  unless I reboot. Long-standing issue.

  4. Right-click no longer works in Firefox. Can't copy or cut-and-
  paste.

  5. After running for more than a few hours, Firefox window frames
become transparent and Firefox no longer works.

  6. When using LibreOffice, screen updates cause brief, but very
annoying, display flashing or blanking. Blanking is sometimes
extended up to ten seconds. (AMD A-8 quad-core processor with 6 GB
  main memory!). Very alarming.

  7. Lost ability to scroll, etc. using "gestures" shortly after
  January 1, 2014.

  8. Unity magically appearing/disappearing scroll tabs replaced
Gnome's hard scrollbars. That's not nice. I don't like them.

  9. Firefox never, ever restores automagically (though it always did
in 10.04 LTS and does on Linux Mint). This issue has been outstanding
for two years, or more. No biggie, but it's annoying and very
unprofessional. Two bugs reported on this vs. Oneric! C'mon, people.
Surely you can do better than that.

This system is single-boot Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Gnome 3/Unity on an ext4
filesystem, installed about August 6, 2012 and kept up to date.

What happened to the concept that 12.04 was to be a "stable" release?
This is the most unstable *n*x OS release I have ever used since 1999
  (SuSE 5 through 8, Ubuntu 8.04, 10.04, Mint 13 and 14). This nonsense
makes Microsoft Windows almost seem desirable. I also use Linux Mint
14 on other "boxes", an HP Pavilion dv7 and a Dell Optiplex GX620.
None of these issues affect Mint 14, although it is based on Ubuntu
12.04 LTS (Mint 14 has its own issues, but none affect usability like
  these do). Unity sucks stumpwater.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1226962]

2014-03-11 Thread Paulo Fino
Hello everyone!

After months of switching layouts and banging my head against this bug,
I thought I should check LibreOffice settings (I'm using 4.1.5.3 now).
What figures? I did find something. And in just a few clicks.

This is not a bug! It's simply a matter of configuration.

For the regular keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, etc.) to remain
operational in LibreOffice applications while using a non-latin keyboard
layout (like Greek or Russian), go to Tools -> Options -> Language
Settings -> Languages, check the Ignore system input language option,
save, and Bob's your uncle.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

PS
Technically, though, shortcuts still remain language-dependent. This means if
you enable this option, you will have to set your document languages manually.

New keyboard layout changer in Ubuntu 13.10 introduce old-new bug. Any
system or application hotkey witch use char (for example: ctrl+alt+t for
terminal or ctrl+t for new tab in browser) become unfunctional when selected
non-latin keyboard layout.
Hotkeys with F1-12, numbers and other non-character buttons works perfectly.

Window manager hotkeys not affected by this bug. All hotkeys in system
parameters->keyboard->hotkeys->windows works perfect with any keyboard
  layout.

Workaround for some system hotkeys and two layouts (english and non-
latin): rebind all hotkeys in your local layout. For example instead
of ctrl+alt+t use ctrl+alt+τ (greek tau). That hotkey still work with
english layout. If you use english and two different non-latin
layouts this workaround helps only with one of them.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 878836] Re: [FFe] Unity Greeter - Use Unity Greeter to fulfil lock screen as well as login functions

2014-03-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package unity - 7.1.2+14.04.20140311-0ubuntu1

---
unity (7.1.2+14.04.20140311-0ubuntu1) trusty; urgency=low

  [ CI bot ]
  * Lockscreen: Multimonitor support, use greeter settings and don't
paint popup windows In detail:  - Use proper fonts for text input  -
Make text cursor to blink as expected (needs
lp:~3v1n0/nux/textentry-toggle-cursor-visibility)  - Use bullet as
password char  - Support multi-monitor correctly, switching view on
mouse movement (as the greeter does)  - Fixed lockscreen not showing
on newly attached monitors  - Never paint windows that might popup
under the lockscreen (such as tooltips or notifications)  - Use
unity greeter gsettings values for painting the Background (support
color, or disable user bg)  - Don't lock guest sessions

  [ Stephen M. Webb ]
  * Bump Nux build-dep to 4.0.6 for ABI change.

  [ Andrea Azzarone ]
  * Implement the lockscreen in Unity that looks like unity-greeter.
Also allow to fallback to lightdm + greeter (tty switching) in case
you need more pam power. (LP: #878836)

  [ Marco Trevisan (Treviño) ]
  * LockScreenPanel: added a light version of PanelView for Lockscreen
only, using PanelIndicatorsView - Indicators scrubbing using mouse
works again - Indicators key navigation is supported (Alt+F10
included) - Indicators will be correctly visible in light themes as
well - Show hostname (optionally) on the top left side of the panel
- LockScreenSettings now bind settings from unity-greeter dconf path

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1291167] [NEW] Unity Launcher Icons Ignore Size Setting

2014-03-11 Thread David R. Hedges
Public bug reported:

In past releases of Ubuntu / Unity, I could change the icon size of
Unity launcher icons using ccsm 'unity' plugin or unity-tweak-tool. In
14.04, the icons seem stuck at their default gigantic size. (I'm not
sure if it's related or not, but in ccsm, the value for Unity launcher
icon size is always blank; I can populate a value, exit ccsm, go back,
and the entry will be blank again.)

Use Unity Greeter to fulfil lock screen as well as login functions.

  Desired Solution:
  - Replace the current lock screen with the Unity Greeter
  - perhaps use 'light locker', see
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/08/lightdm-session-locker-light-locker.html
  - also see https://plus.google.com/u/0/106086509626546157534/posts/5hQVYARYCkh

  [FFe]
This is a FFe to implement in unity a lockscreen that looks like
unity-greeter inside unity.

The code for unity was ready before FF, but to improve PAM support we had to
delay it

  Binary package hint: compiz

First off wasn't able to upload report while the crash occured due to
message: disk space left only 1MB.
  RAM is 1GB.
Removed .xession-errors which had more than 60MB, compiz crash report had
119MB. After that I was able to file this bug via terminal. So there is no
.xsession-errors included.
  Procedure:
  Install CCSM.
Enable Ring Switcher. Result: crash ## Popup window: Due to Compiz shutdown,
report a bug, restart or close.
I choose to restart, after this desktop reloads everthing, except CCSM in
unity pane is gone (every time after restarting compiz).

Enable Desktop Cube. Result: crash and same popup window as above.
I choose to report a bug. Result: Total freeze, probably due to less space.
No keys work e.g. to open a terminal, screen is empty, only CCSM is still open
without window borders, graphic is corrupt. Doesn't let me make a screenshot
due to less disk space. (Made it later after removing logfiles.)

Workaround: create a folder via right click on desktop, you're not able to
give it a name, because you can't type anything.
Open the folder, it opens Nautilus. Navigate to /usr/share/applications and
double click on 'compiz'. Desktop reloads, but still looks like the screenshot.
Also removed logfiles.

Change wallpaper and transparency of viewport. Result: crash. No window
borders, no key function.
  Restart compiz via /usr/share/applications.
Now everthing comes up ok and due to cleaning some diskspace able to file a
bug.

Bug description:
Use Unity Greeter to fulfil lock screen as well as login functions.

  Desired Solution:
  - Replace the current lock screen with the Unity Greeter
  - perhaps use 'light locker', see
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/08/lightdm-session-locker-light-locker.html
  - also see https://plus.google.com/u/0/106086509626546157534/posts/5hQVYARYCkh

  [FFe]
This is a FFe to implement in unity a lockscreen that looks like
unity-greeter inside unity.

The code for unity was ready before FF, but to improve PAM support we had to
delay it
  See more at

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1291088] [NEW] Doesn't unlock when coming back from the greeter

2014-03-11 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

Using the new unity-lock-screen from the current candidate version:
- run unity on a system with multiple users
- click on another user in indicator-session

-> the greeter is displayed with that user selected, so you can type the
password to log in

- select back your user and enter the password to unlock the session

-> what happens: the session is unlocked then locked again just after that
-> what should happen: the session should stay unlocked

Bug description:
I have an EliteBook 8540w with internal and external battery running Ubuntu
11.10 (oneiric).
  Linux 3.0.0-12-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 14:56:25 UTC 2011 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The power indicator (indicator-power, version 0.9-0ubuntu2) does not combine
the status of both batteries.
E.g. if one battery still has 1 hour left, and the other has 2 hours left, it
will show 1:00 or 2:00, instead of 3:00.
E.g. When the external battery is almost run out (but the internal one is
still charged), the indicator becomes red, instead of staying white/grey. It
should only be red when both batteries are almost drained.
E.g. when the internal one is fully charged, and the external one is
discharging, the estimated time show is the estimated time that the external
one will be discharged, not taking into account the internal one. see attached
screenshot (total time show should be around 4 hours)

The original applet provided by gnome (I re-enabled the notification
area) does (still) have the behavior as I expect. In other words, this
  is a regression compared to 10.10 (pre-unity).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 880881] Re: Power indicator does not combine multiple battery status

2014-03-11 Thread Rob Tongue
I will add my comments, Charles, you say this is by design, but it is a
design flaw. The battery gets down to about 5 minutes remaining, and
stops discharging. That means, it will ALWAYS show 5 minutes remaining
in the panel, but it is really only discharging from the second battery
at that point. It..never...goes.away.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1280644] Re: unity-panel-service crashed with SIGSEGV in __GI__IO_file_open()

2014-03-11 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

2014-03-11 Thread Seth Arnold
Please note that the dmesg text in your bug reports shows BIOS errors;
all your reported bugs are memory related. Please try:

- BIOS upgrade, your BIOS and ACPI firmwares appear to be broken in several ways
- run memtest86 overnight to see if your memory, memory controller, or CPU have
an easily-correctable problem

Thanks

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1282768] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in ReleaseReference()

Use Unity Greeter to fulfil lock screen as well as login functions.

  Desired Solution:
  - Replace the current lock screen with the Unity Greeter
  - perhaps use 'light locker', see
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/08/lightdm-session-locker-light-locker.html
  - also see https://plus.google.com/u/0/106086509626546157534/posts/5hQVYARYCkh

  [FFe]
This is a FFe to implement in unity a lockscreen that looks like
unity-greeter inside unity.

The code for unity was ready before FF, but to improve PAM support we had to
delay it

  the system completely unusable.

  1. run Firefox 12.0 in the foreground
  2. hit Alt to bring up HUD
  3. type any text
  4. select one proposal from HUD
  5. wait for unity-panel-service and hud-service to fill up the remaining RAM
and swap space.

This is due to a high number of bookmarks in a user profile

Selecting the mouse battery over the desktop battery is by design iff
the mouse is reporting it will run empty sooner than the laptop. From
the spec:

> "The menu title should tell you at a glance what you need to know
most: what device will lose power soonest (and optionally when), or
otherwise which device will take longest to charge, optionally how long
it will take, and optionally its current charge level. More detailed
information can be accessed inside the menu itself. "

I have an EliteBook 8540w with internal and external battery running Ubuntu

In other words, this
  is a regression compared to 10.10 (pre-unity).

  up at the panel.

Title:
In datetime indicator and control-center panel, it could be easier to
distinguish between locations that share the same name

Status in Unity Control Center:
  Confirmed
Status in “indicator-datetime” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  1) The release of Ubuntu you are using
  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
  Release: 12.04

  2) The version of the package you are using
  $ apt-cache policy indicator-datetime
  indicator-datetime:

   *** 0.3.94-0ubuntu2 0
  500 http://mirror.yandex.ru/ubuntu/ precise/main i386 Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  4) What happened instead
"Name of city/town, country" in locations for cities/towns which have
duplicate names in different countries.
It's impossible to understand which country the city/town is in locations
drop down menu in notifications area and in the settings of showing locations
in time/date settings (when locations is already selected, the only way is:
remove all current locations for duplicate cities/towns, reassign location, but
you still can't understand which time is showing in drop down menu of datetime
indicator in case of cities/towns with duplicate names but in different
counties).

  3) What you expected to happen: one of these:
   a) auto detect cities/towns, which has duplicates in different countries,
and always showing country for them everywhere.
   b) manual option to show counties for all locations everywhere.
   c) manual option to show country for user selected locations from all
locations, which user selected (and always showing countries in settings of
setup locations).

gnome-terminal has a setting that intentionally stops Alt grabs for

always used to allow me to type "Alt-F" (and others) in my terminals.
In the past, this always worked great, and I could type Alt-F in, say,
mutt, to change my From address.

As of the latest uploads, I'm now reduced to the awkward Esc-F,
because Alt-F brings up the file menu, no matter how much I wish it
wouldn't. Pretty please fix this regression.

(I assume the same annoyance would be happening on my attempts to use
Alt-[1-0] in irssi, if gnome-terminal had a menu whose shortcut was a
  digit, but thankfully it doesn't.)

Bug description:
This problem was spotted on Viking (see:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/viking/+bug/1255275).

I have distilled this down to the (I think) bare minimum valid thread
program that displays this fault (as attached).

Here the program will hang when dialog that is created via the Main Menu is
closed.
Goto Menu Bar -> File->Dialog->Close ---> Program Hangs

This only occurs under the Unity Desktop.
When run under another Desktop such as LXDE (lubuntu-desktop) then the
program operates correctly.

Thus I assume this is a fault of this Unity GTK+ module.

I note another workaround for programs is to avoid the global menu
thing by running with an empty UBUNTU_MENUPROXY environment variable.

working again. Can anyone confirm? (and/or have I borked my dconf :P)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1085169] Re: LibreOffice Menus Stop Working even with libreoffice>=1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu4 and indicator-appmenu>=12.10.3-0ubuntu2.1

2014-03-11 Thread Björn Michaelsen
Closing this as invalid in indicator-appmenu as the fix in LibreOffice
seems to have solved all remaining issues.

** Changed in: indicator-appmenu (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Invalid

Title:
LibreOffice Menus Stop Working even with
  libreoffice>=1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu4 and indicator-
  appmenu>=12.10.3-0ubuntu2.1

Status in LibreOffice Productivity Suite:
  Fix Released
Status in “indicator-appmenu” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
When using LibreOffice with Ubuntu 12.10, the menus will stop working.
That is, the menu is showing at the top of the screen, and you can
select a menu item, however nothing happens. Once the behaviour
starts, none of the menu items work, including File Exit. The only way
to get the menus to work again, is to quit LibreOffice and restart the
  program.

This has been reported in Writer and Calc so far.

This happens regardless of the video driver, and on 32 or 64 bits.

This is with libreoffice version >= 1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu4 and
  indicator-appmenu 12.10.3-0ubuntu2.1 (currently in quantal-proposed)
ONLY. If you do not have these installed, you are hitting bug 1064962
  or bug 1075263 resp..

  WORKAROUND:
  - Use right-click menus, toolbar buttons or keyboard shortcuts, or
  - Close and reopen the document

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1283723] Re: unity-scope-loader crashed with SIGABRT in __gnu_cxx::__verbose_terminate_handler()

2014-03-11 Thread Michał Sawicz
This happened to me when I was trying to use the dash under high load,
having opened the dash a few times I couldn't get any results out of the
apps scope, and subsequently this crash occurred.
