[Dx-packages] [Bug 1358595] [NEW] Unity and desktop effects are extremely slow, some windows don't show on Alt+Tab-ing.

2014-08-18 Thread NoBugs!
Public bug reported:

I noticed that operations like switching windows were taking an
extremely long time, and opacity fade in is taking 10s to a minute or
more. I quit Netbeans and Firefox, though they didn't seem to be loading
the system down too badly. Still going slow. I also noticed none of the
dropdowns from the Ubuntu status icons in upper right work.

I open Firefox again, and it slowly fades in, and works, but alt-tab
doesn't show it as available - though it is right on the (only) screen.
It seems now any window that is called up takes a loong time to go from
transparent to visible.

About this time I also saw that Nemiver debugger icon jumped up and
wiggled - like it was alerting about process needing to be debugged?

I'm still seeing this problem although no high-cpu processes are
happening. At the same time this started I also noticed that searching
in the dash was breaking - "update" couldn't even find update manager.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1358557] [NEW] Can't Drag Overlay Scroll-bar to Top on Long Files

2014-08-18 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

In multiple graphical text editors I'm often experiencing difficulty
using the Overlay Scroll-bar to drag-scroll to the very top of the
document.

I will click-grab-drag the overlay scrollbar all the way to its top-most
position and then still be about 1/3 of the way from the very top of the
text document.

I'm noticing this unwanted behavior mainly on text files that have over
700 lines. And I've experience it, so far, in both gedit and geany.

This may have nothing to do with it, but I will inform you that I am a big fan
of Ubuntu 14.04's scaling features. While running my laptop's monitor at it
highest resolution (1920 x 1080), I scale my screen larger (1.12), using the
settings that can be found here:
System Settings > Displays > Scale for Menus and Titlebars

Additionally, I use large fonts, which can be found here:
System Settings > Universal Access > Large Text > On

As I said, these "scaling and large font" settings may be unrelated to
this issue, but I'm mentioning it just in case.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1358504] [NEW] Screensaver leaks password key-presses through to applications

2014-08-18 Thread Redders
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

This is similar to the bug described in:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1306970

But as that is marked fixed, perhaps this is something different.

A few times, I have been unable to enter my password until I had clicked in the
top right corner, and back into the password box.
I hadn't suspected anything serious, until today when I tried to log in, and
eventually got in, seeing that my password had been set to my web browser.

In addition, I've also had instances where I've had to enter the
password twice, and instances when I've come to the computer and it
appeared not to be locked, until I moved the mouse, and the lock screen
displayed.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1357720] Re: when unlocking (with password) I have a black screen

2014-08-18 Thread Seth Arnold
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1357720

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance!

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1358479] [NEW] after typing password on login screen, login screen returns

2014-08-18 Thread HJZ
Public bug reported:

I am running a dual boot system.
Installed trusty (amd64) from usb stick - without formatting the install
partition.
Upon restart the login screen appears all right. But after typing the password,
the screen turns black for a split second - and the login screen appears again
- without any comments.
If I type a wrong password, I get the incorrect password message on the login
screen.
If I choose the guest login, unity appears and is perfectly operational.
What can I do?
Thanks so much!

password, the screen turns black for a split second - and the login screen
appears again - without any comments.
If I type a wrong password, I get the incorrect password message on the login
screen.
If I choose the guest login, unity appears and is perfectly operational.
  What can I do?
  Thanks so much!
  Hans

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1208019] Re: Eclipse menus don't show up in Trusty

2014-08-18 Thread Mathew Hodson
unity-gtk-module is still in -proposed and has not been moved to
-updates yet. unity-gtk-module should still be marked Fix Committed for
trusty.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Switching tabs between open source files with different file types in
Eclipse causes the Source and Refactor menus to be empty in the global
  menu bar under Unity.

This is a severe usability problem for many Eclipse users. The fix
proposed has been available in a PPA and is well-tested.

  [Test Case]

  1. Open a new project in Eclipse.
  2. Open two files: one with a .java extension, another with a .txt extension.
  3. Switch between the .java file and the .txt file and back again.
  4. Open the Source or Refactor menu in the Unity global menu bar.

Expected result: menus with menu items
Actual result: empty menus for both

  [Regression Potential]

The fix involves changes to both gtk and unity-gtk-module.

The changes to gtk are minimal and only involve the reversal of a pair
of signal emissions, in a part of the code (GtkMenuTracker) which is
normally used by desktop environments, not typical user applications.
Therefore regression potential for the gtk update is unlikely.

The changes to unity-gtk-module involve emitting show and hide signals
where they were none before has some regression potential for
applications that are explicitly watching for when their menus are
opening and closing. But this is rare for applications to do, and we
likely would have already received bug reports for those that do.
Being completely sure would require extensive testing across all gtk
  apps though.

Both changes together have been available as a PPA, thoroughly tested
  for quite some time now.

  [Other Info]

The changes to unity-gtk-module depend on the changes to gtk, so both
must be tested in simultaneity. Suggested to upload both to trusty-
  proposed at the same time.

  Original bug report follows:

  HOW TO REPRODUCE

  1. Run Eclipse, Gimp or Inkscape.
  2. Move the cursor to the top of the screen.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1343962] Re: Sound slider moves itself randomly when scrolling or moving sound pointer

2014-08-18 Thread Jussi Lind
I tested now that installing Ubuntu SDK on my Intel-based laptop didn't
trigger the bug. I believe that this could have something to do with
NVIDIA as the PC in #1344990 has NVIDIA's proprietary driver installed
(I reported that bug). My desktop at work is Intel-based and no problems
there.

  In Progress
Status in Ubuntu UX bugs:
  Fix Committed
Status in “indicator-power” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Battery icon does not reliably display correct values at low battery
  levels.

The icon works fine until you get below 30%. At 10-30% a small red
icon should be displayed, and another icon should be displayed at
<10%. Currently, the icon doesn't seem to change to anything smaller
  than the 40% icon.

I have sometimes seen the red 20% icon, but it's very unreliable, and
typically switches back to the 40% icon moments after resuming the
  phone.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1328646] Re: Clock out of sync on resume from suspend

2014-08-18 Thread Ted Gould
Just got this on my phone from letting it run over the weekend. Verified
the value passed over DBus is correct from the indicator:

$ gdbus call --session --dest com.canonical.indicator.datetime --object-path
/com/canonical/indicator/datetime --method org.gtk.Actions.Describe phone-header
((true, signature '', [<{'title': <'Upcoming'>, 'visible': , 'label': <'
9:41 AM'>, 'accessible-desc': <' 9:41 AM'>}>]),)

Where the panel is saying that it's "6:13 PM"

It'd be probably nice to also have vibration beside the sound alert

  - Design Solution --
Giorgio Venturi updated the design spec for the clock app at [1]. The
vibration will be enabled by default for all alarms. The user however will be
provided a global setting to disable that if required.

No menubar for QtQuick.Controls based applications

Status in Application menu for Qt5:
  Triaged
Status in “appmenu-qt5” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
For QtQuick.Controls based applications no menubars are shown. The
following message is printed to the console instead:

appmenu-qt: handleReparent 128 The given QWindow has no QMenuBar
  assigned

Apparently this is because QtQuick.Controls menus are built upon
  QQuickMenuBar and
  QGuiApplicationPrivate::platformTheme()->createPlatformMenuBar();
  instead of QMenuBar.

  3. Click on any of the menu items (File, Edit, Navigate, ...)

  **
  EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR
  **

  - The content of the submenus show up.

  **
  REAL BEHAVIOUR
  **

  - Only the top-level headers are available.
  - Nothing happens when clicking on them
  - They don't show up in the HUD either.

  ***
  WORK-AROUND
  ***

To modify "/usr/share/applications/eclipse.desktop" to look like this:

  [Desktop Entry]
  Type=Application
  Name=Eclipse
  Comment=Eclipse Integrated Development Environment
  Icon=eclipse
  Exec=env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= eclipse
  Terminal=false
  Categories=Development;IDE;Java;

  RELEVANT DETAILS

  - Doesn't affect Ubuntu releases prior to 13.10.

I have the feeling this is independent of the SDK as

[Dx-packages] [Bug 988072] Re: Can't remove user if they're not in /etc/passwd

2014-08-18 Thread Neil Broadley
Any manual workarounds for this? The number of users that shows up in
the lighdm login window keeps growing with each person that logs in. I'm
going to have to remove the picker if I can't delete these AD (LDAP)
based users from our laptop fleet.

Title:
Can't remove user if they're not in /etc/passwd

Status in “accountsservice” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Thanks to nss, there are many ways for a user account to exist.

If you have user accounts authenticated with LDAP (say), and use nss
tables other than passwd to store user information, then you find that
the system automatically creates an entry in the user account database
on login. This is handy: it means the user gets listed by lightdm in
the greeter, for example, and things like background and keyboard
prefs can be known to the greeter. It's all good.

However, these users cannot be deleted. If you use the accounts-daemon
from the control center to remove them, you get this error:

  Failed to delete user
  GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.Accounts.Error.Failed: running
'/usr/sbin/userdel' failed: /usr/sbin/userdel returned an error (1): userdel:
cannot remove entry 'tbushnell' from /etc/passwd

And alas, the user then stays in the system database.

Please make it possible to remove users from the system database even
if deluser and userdel don't work on them.

Bug description:
It'd be probably nice to also have vibration beside the sound alert
  when an alarm triggers.

  - Design Solution --
Giorgio Venturi updated the design spec for the clock app at [1]. The
vibration will be enabled by default for all alarms. The user however will be
provided a global setting to disable that if required.

No menubar for QtQuick.Controls based applications

Status in Application menu for Qt5:
  New
Status in “appmenu-qt5” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
For QtQuick.Controls based applications no menubars are shown. The
following message is printed to the console instead:

appmenu-qt: handleReparent 128 The given QWindow has no QMenuBar
  assigned

Apparently this is because QtQuick.Controls menus are built upon
  QQuickMenuBar and
  QGuiApplicationPrivate::platformTheme()->createPlatformMenuBar();
  instead of QMenuBar.
