[Dx-packages] [Bug 1342903] Re: unity retains focus on virtualbox session when locked

Possibly duplicate of bug 1322769? (Though that one doesn't specifically
mention that the entered password is leaked to the VM.)

Bug description:
While using virtualbox in fullscreen mode, CTRL + ALT + L, leaves
focus with the virtual machine. However this still locks the host's
unity session. This leaves all key events trapped in the virtual
machine, so typing in your password becomes impossible. After a reboot
  all functionality returned.

This could be a potential security hazard, depending on the virtual
machine being used, as it allows arbitrary commands to be executed
through a locked unity session without any authentication.

But as that is marked fixed, perhaps this is something different.

A few times, I have been unable to enter my password until I had clicked in
the top right corner, and back into the password box.
I hadn't suspected anything serious, until today when I tried to log in, and
eventually got in, seeing that my password had been set to my web browser.

In addition, I've also had instances where I've had to enter the
password twice, and instances when I've come to the computer and it
appeared not to be locked, until I moved the mouse, and the lock
  screen displayed.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1360376] [NEW] indicator-message-service health-check failures

2014-08-22 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

We ran baselines of many processes on an idle nexus4 using health-check
for the last trusty image, and some of those have regressed since then.
These could be real regressions, or they could be something that's
expected due to changes that happened since that image. We need someone
to investigate these and report whether it requires a fix, or whether
the thresholds need to be adjusted, and why.

Results from a recent test run can be seen at
http://ci.ubuntu.com/smokeng/utopic/touch/mako/204:20140822:20140811.1/9853
/health-check/

For indicator message service, we're seeing the wakeup rate at .25
wakeups/sec, quite a bit higher than what was expected. Is this related
perhaps to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-
messages/+bug/1308130 ?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1296431] Re: Phone doesn't alert user of critical power situations

2014-08-22 Thread Charles Kerr
So, the good news is that the code to pop up a notification is there and
working -- an alert does appear, as per the spec.

The bad news is that it's an interactive notification, which means that
unity-notifications hardcodes the notification to disappear after five
seconds. So unless you're looking at the screen during those five
seconds, you won't see the notification.

I'm not sure how to proceed on this. MacSlow's got a valid point about
avoiding feature creep in unity-notifications, but I don't see any other
obvious medium for this notification. I'm not sure what the Right Thing
to do is here.

Perhaps we should have a "low power" sound play, just as laptops and
android phones do?

FWIW, this bug is compounded by the power icon not showing red at low
power levels. This has a fix about to land in
, which has a fix about to land.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1208019] Re: Eclipse menus don't show up in Trusty

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Switching tabs between open source files with different file types in
Eclipse causes the Source and Refactor menus to be empty in the global
  menu bar under Unity.

This is a severe usability problem for many Eclipse users. The fix
proposed has been available in a PPA and is well-tested.

  [Test Case]

  1. Open a new project in Eclipse.
  2. Open two files: one with a .java extension, another with a .txt extension.
  3. Switch between the .java file and the .txt file and back again.
  4. Open the Source or Refactor menu in the Unity global menu bar.

Expected result: menus with menu items
Actual result: empty menus for both

  [Regression Potential]

The fix involves changes to both gtk and unity-gtk-module.

The changes to gtk are minimal and only involve the reversal of a pair
of signal emissions, in a part of the code (GtkMenuTracker) which is
normally used by desktop environments, not typical user applications.
Therefore regression potential for the gtk update is unlikely.

The changes to unity-gtk-module involve emitting show and hide signals
where they were none before has some regression potential for
applications that are explicitly watching for when their menus are
opening and closing. But this is rare for applications to do, and we
likely would have already received bug reports for those that do.
Being completely sure would require extensive testing across all gtk
  apps though.

Both changes together have been available as a PPA, thoroughly tested
  for quite some time now.

  [Other Info]

The changes to unity-gtk-module depend on the changes to gtk, so both
must be tested in simultaneity. Suggested to upload both to trusty-
  proposed at the same time.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1357252] Re: Upstart jobs specifying cgroup fail to start occasionally

2014-08-22 Thread James Hunt
After a lot of testing, I think I've found the cause - when lightdm
starts the session init, logind is supposed to setup the cgroups. But
that isn't happening.

Normally, logind would do that by asking systemd, but in our case it
talks to systemd-shim. sytemd-shim then asks cgmanager to create the
cgroups. However, currently systemd-shim does not fail if cgmanager
cannot be contacted. So I think the proper fix is to change systemd-
shim to either block or fail hard if cgmanager is not contactable or
unable to create the requested cgroups. It would also be beneficial to
arrange for systemd-shim output to be captured since currently all
stdout and stderr is discarded when it is run via /usr/share/dbus-1
/system-services/org.freedesktop.systemd1.service.

A "quick fix" however is to change dbus's 'start on' condition to ensure
it doesn't start until cgmanager is ready. The simplest fix being:

$ echo "start on cgmanager-ready" | sudo tee -a /etc/init/dbus.override

Bug description:
  A cousin of bug #1354406

Some of the early testers are hitting a use case that we didn't
account for, that of multiple alarms set for the same time.

Indicator-datetime currently tries to pull up notifications for, and
play sounds for, both notifications. That's happening by accident and
is clearly not the right approach.

I can think of a couple of approaches we might take:

  (1) Queue the alarms such that only one triggers at a time. This has
the advantage of being simple, both in concept and in code. I'm not
certain this is the most user-friendly approach, as it could be
frustrating have to dismiss a queue of alarms.

  (2) Somehow fold multiple alarms together. This has the advantage of
being friendlier to the user as only a single snooze/dismiss prompt
would be given. However it opens other questions, e.g. which of the
  alarms' sounds should play?

Of these two I slghtly prefer (1) for its simplicity; however, neither
of these options seems perfect and I'm hoping Design may have a better
  suggestion

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1311211] Re: Bluetooth icon has a padlock emblem when paired with device

2014-08-22 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
reanjr, that's an enticing suggestion. However, if you were using a
Bluetooth keyboard or mouse, the result would be that the Bluetooth icon
was blue almost all the time, which wouldn't be good. (And it would make
you even less likely to notice the messaging icon when it went blue.)

Anyway, I updated the specification back in December to describe what
the paired icon should be. It shouldn't involve a padlock, because
that's a non-sequitur.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1357746] Re: unity, (compiz) fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1

2014-08-22 Thread jerrylamos
3.16.0-9 i386 32 bit boots normally. Very rarely boots to desktop and
cursor no unity.

3.16.0-9 amd64 always boots to desktop no unity. X is up, compiz hence
unity are not.

3.16..0-8 rarely boots to unity, usually to desktop and cursor only.

Viewing utopic as a black box, characteristics are that compiz is trying
to start before X is ready, usually on amd64 and rarely on i386.

Are both amf64 and i386 using the same Intel video driver?

The icon works fine until you get below 30%. At 10-30% a small red
icon should be displayed, and another icon should be displayed at
<10%. Currently, the icon doesn't seem to change to anything smaller
  than the 40% icon.

I have sometimes seen the red 20% icon, but it's very unreliable, and
typically switches back to the 40% icon moments after resuming the

Sorry, but i don't know yet the right names.

Of these two I slghtly prefer (1) for its simplicity; however, neither
of these options seems perfect and I'm hoping Design may have a better
  suggestion

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1360102] [NEW] Unity device blacklist nonfunctional

2014-08-22 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Public bug reported:

Installing 14.04 in a classroom dual-boot environment, Unity shows icons
for the Windows partitions on the launcher, nonfunctional since they
require root to mount. Such extraneous icons only serve to confuse the
user.

Googling, I found out about the com.canonical.Unity.Devices blacklist
gsettings entry. I made a script that generates a schema such as this,
for internal drives:

[com.canonical.Unity.Devices]
blacklist=['F236BFEF36BFB349','1A98C11998C0F473','c251a534-47dd-4ecb-a62c-2ced6914ef4a','122357ec-3130-482f-b20e-a4c6522e0873']

Here's the corresponding output of blkid -o list
device fs_type labelmount point UUID
---
/dev/sda1ntfsSystem (not mounted)F236BFEF36BFB349
/dev/sda2ntfsOSDisk (not mounted)1A98C11998C0F473
/dev/sda3swap
c251a534-47dd-4ecb-a62c-2ced6914ef4a
/dev/sda4ext4 /
122357ec-3130-482f-b20e-a4c6522e0873

I put the file in /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas and ran glib-compile-
schemas on it. The entry _does_ show up in a user's session as evidenced
by gsettings get and dconf-editor. dconf-editor also has a documentation
line for the entry that indicates that this _should_ indeed prevent the
named drives from appearing.

However, the icons persist in appearing, even on a clean home directory
(no old user configuration to confuse anything).

Can this be fixed, or is there another way to prevent Unity from showing
local internal drives to users who have no means of accessing them?
Disabling drive icons altogether would be suboptimal but perhaps
workable too, though it'd be preferable that the removable drives would
get icons. However, even removing unity://devices from
com.canonical.Unity.Launcher favorites didn't prevent the icons from
appearing (though the same edit did succeed in removing other
application icons, so the setting itself went through properly).
