Bug description:
  CID 201209-11735

For some machines, for example, HP laptop "HP 1000" has a hot key on F4 to
perform the shorcut "super + p" to switch video modes.
Use command "sudo showkey -k" to capture the key code of the hot key you will
see the key code of "super key" and "p"
This key combination is expected to change the video mode.

  platfrom: HP laptop "HP 1000"
  image: 12.04.3

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. open an terminal,
  2. plugin an external monitor
  3. press the video switch hotkey, for "HP 1000" it is the F4 key

  Expected result:
  1. Video mode is changed by the hotkey
  2. no character is printed on terminal

  Actual result
  1. Video mode is not changed.
  2. a "p" will be printed on the terminal screen

  The other information:
  1. A similar bug was reported on LP:#539477 before.
  2. The hotkey in 13.04 works

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1359299] Re: utopic 3.16.0-9 iso boots to desktop no unity

2014-08-27 Thread jerrylamos
Looked at bug #1346096. That user got success with apt-get update, apt-
get dist-upgrade. Not me.

As of 27 August updates the 3.10.0-10 kernel still fails. Of course,
booting the corresponding .iso fails no surprise.

On the same install, same everything else but the kernel, selecting
3.10.0-6 kernel out of /boot (instead of 3.16.0-10 kernel) 3D
acceleration runs fine. As it does on all previous utopic, trusty, etc.

3D runs fine on this hardware, for some reason compiz is deciding isn't
supported. There's been mention of a compiz change in August.

I don't know what test current compiz does, or where X is in
initialization when compiz does the test vs. the compiz level on July
31..

I wouldn't have a clue how to downgrade compiz for testing purposes.

BTW, running different kernels on the same install, one runs and one
fails, is compiz in the kernel?

Thanks for any ideas.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1361911] Re: I have recently rebooted after the latest software update and suddenly my laptop is running slower than slow. top shows compliz is taking between 20% to more often 130%

2014-08-27 Thread Doug Gray
I can reproduce this problem by logging out and logging in with the external
screen attached. Compiz chokes the computer running at around 150% CPU usage
alone.
If I unplug the external screen the laptop seems to get largely back to normal.
Then plugging the screen back in - the situation is as I previously noted,
compiz usage is high but not so bad.
Rebooting or logging out then back in triggers the very high compiz usage.

If the whitelist was retired, Java and Wine would be hard-coded as the

Bug description:
I think the default icon size for the application switcher is too large.
When I have many applications opened, it is very clunky when I hit Alt+Tab
with all the scrolling that happens.
Yes, I can click on the launcher, but as a developer I tend to find keyboard
shortcuts more productive.
Another way that I use the switcher is hitting Alt+Tab and quickly selecting
the application icon using the mouse, but the scrolling makes the selection
imprecise and forces me to move the cursor a lot.
I have compiled a custom version or Unity with half of the size for the
icons, and I found it perfect for my needs.
But every Unity update forces me to reapply the patch and compile all over
again. Not much fun in that.

My suggestion is to make the icon size for the application switcher
configurable like the launcher icons, saving the setting on dconf.

  Thanks!

New keyboard layout changer in Ubuntu 13.10 introduce old-new bug. Any
system or application hotkey witch use char (for example: ctrl+alt+t for
terminal or ctrl+t for new tab in browser) become unfunctional when selected
non-latin keyboard layout.
Hotkeys with F1-12, numbers and other non-character buttons works perfectly.

Window manager hotkeys not affected by this bug. All hotkeys in system
parameters->keyboard->hotkeys->windows works perfect with any keyboard
  layout.

Workaround for some system hotkeys and two layouts (english and non-
latin): rebind all hotkeys in your local layout. For example instead
of ctrl+alt+t use ctrl+alt+τ (greek tau). That hotkey still work with
english layout. If you use english and two different non-latin
layouts this workaround helps only with one of them.

  Dear Ubuntu users and developers!
Please include the following information to your comment about non-latin
shortcuts problems:
  1. What Ubuntu version do you have (Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.10 GNOME, Ubuntu
14.04, Ubuntu 14.04 GNOME and so on), upgraded (describe version) or clean
installed
  2. What keyboard layout do you have
  3. What shortcut for keyboard layout switching do you use
  4. On which session you have problems - that is one from Unity, GNOME Shell,
GNOME FlashBack/Fallback (Metacity), GNOME FlashBack/Fallback (Compiz)
  5. With which program and its version and origin (Ubuntu repositories, PPA,
non-deb binary package from some website) you have problems.

By providing this information you can make bug-fixing much simpler and

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1359299] Re: utopic 3.16.0-9 iso boots to desktop no unity

2014-08-27 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The two consecutive test results sound like the desktop shell is being
restarted after the first attempt fails.

Compiz requires hardware 3D acceleration (GPU) to be available through
the X11 server. The X11 server does not require hardware 3D
acceleration to run, which explains why the X server is running but not
Compiz. The error messages reported in the attachments to this bug
indicate the 3D acceleration is not working at the driver level, for
whatever reason.

The error described initially in this bug report resembles bug #1346096.
Perhaps the same solution suggested there will solve this problem as
well?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1346355] Re: 14.04 power-cog does not turn red when restart is needed

2014-08-27 Thread Alex Corrie
I respect the fact this is a design decision and I assume it's based on
user feedback.

That said, I don't really understand that rationale. I mean, it's
literally a power symbol crossed with a cog, which reflects the
semantics of the menu: two significant components are a UI path to
system settings and power management options. I can't think of a better
place to have a static notification of the need to reboot. I
wholeheartedly agree with the need for this as explained in the report.

In the end, I'll probably knock up a quick solution for this because I
missed it straight away, but I thought I'd throw in my 2p.

14.04 power-cog does not turn red when restart is needed

Status in The Session Menu:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In ubuntu 12.04 the power-cog turned red when a reboot/restart was
needed. This was a helpful feature because it informed users that they
needed to restart the computer. But this helpful indicator is gone in
14.04 and it has resulted in me never remembering to restart my
computer because there is no helpful feedback from ubuntu that a
  restart is needed.

In 14.04, I will perform an update and a popup tells me a Restart is
needed but I usually select to restart-later because I am in the
middle of working. By the the time I am done working I have forgotten
that a restart is needed. Later when I am working again a popup occurs
informing me that a restart is needed (but again I am in the middle of
working so I don't restart). Bottom line: when the power-cog turned
red, it reminded me that I needed to restart the computer. When I
finished my work I look up and see the red power-cog and "Oh yeah, I
need to restart. Now is a good time." In 14.04 this doesn't happen.
Instead I'm perpetually bugged by a popup (which is useless because
it's never a good time to restart when it pops up). The red power-cog
was a much BETTER design choice.

The removal of the power-cog turning red has negatively affected the
management of ubuntu updates and it should be fixed so that it behaves
  like 12.04.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1359299] Re: utopic 3.16.0-9 iso boots to desktop no unity

2014-08-27 Thread jerrylamos
Out of many boots today, 3.16.0-10 ran once. Almost all the time X is
running, desktop is fine, compiz and unity fail.

Trying to get compiz and unity running from Ctrl-Alt-F1 or F2 gets a
whole screen of messages, including:

...
Unity is fully supported by your hardware
Unity is not supported by your hardware, loading software.
-

Somehow are two consecutive tests being done?

I could do a ubuntu-bug linux at that point if it is any help.

Booted 3.10.0-6 and ran ubuntu-bug apport on the saved file.

Planet Ubuntu asked for results on 3.16.0-9 so this is my result.

In Trusty, Unity window decorator & compiz doesn't have proper support
for gtk-headerbar. As a result applications using gtk-headerbar look
  ugly & awkward.

  1. There is no re-size grip, they are inaccessible for mouse-resizing.

  2. It appears shadow-less & border-less.

  3. In gnome-tweak-tool, when toggling among tabs, the middle section
  gets transparent! (Screenshot attached).

It seems applications are drawn without any decoration properly
applied on them.It also occurs with themes which do have headerbar
support. Other desktop-shells based on compiz are affected as
well...for example, compiz session for Gnome-Flashback.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1321309] Re: [Indicators] Missed calendar or alarm events need to be properly indicated

2014-08-27 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
Here is a reply from Matthieu James,

"We chose to use the red icon. I pushed it in my bzr branch and
requested a merge: https://code.launchpad.net/~tiheum/ubuntu-themes
/suru-icons/+merge/231533. It should be available soon."

So when there is a missed alarm, the red alarm icon should be shown to
indicate the missed state. With that I am marking the status back to
Triaged.

** Changed in: ubuntu-clock-app

Bug description:
Imagine a scenario where you have a calendar event or a clock alarm to
go of at 10:00. If you get a call at the same time, then obviously the
call gets the highest priority and the alarm or calendar audible
notification is suppressed by the system. So a phone user can actually
  miss the event.

This can be resolved by turning the alarm icon shown in the indicator
to blue similar to messages to indicate that an alarm or event was
  missed by the user.

  ---

  Desired solution:

The alarm icon turns its state to active like notification
center/messages indicator as suggested in the bug description.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1357746] Re: Compiz fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on some Intel hardware

2014-08-27 Thread Doug McMahon
To clear up -
1. This bug was filed by running apport -cli from a tty, saving the report,
then filing that report from a recovery boot
(if there is a better way to use apport from a tty tell me.

2. The kernel version is *irrelevant*, compiz fails with any kernel inc.
going back to 3.13.x when xserver-xorg-video-intel is at
2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1

3. Compiz works fine with any kernel when xserver-xorg-video-intel is at
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.910-0ubuntu1

4. This bug is only being filed on Intel Haswell Mobile, in my case on a
Lenovo 510p

5. If I install xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on a
trusty install then there is no issue with compiz, so this only occurs
on utopic.

6. I don't believe this issues jerrylamos is seeing are the same, as
I've stated the kernel doesn't matter, this is not a 'sometimes' thing
& reverting the intel xserver package immediately & completely resolves
either thru a reboot or a stop/restart of lightdm/re-login

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1296431] Re: Phone doesn't alert user of critical power situations

2014-08-27 Thread Charles Kerr
Daniela's updated the notifications spec to handle this case; see
attached wireframe.

In short, we change the notification to a Snap Decision so that the
notification doesn't disappear after 5 sec. The Snap Decision's two
actions are "Battery settings" and "OK".

Bug description:
This feature replaces the old shutdown dialog with a new unity style
one. The style change greatly improves the look and feel of the
desktop. It's a feature that has been requested since 12.04. There are
over 50 unit tests to cover the UI and over 30 to cover the session-
manager in all of the new code. There is a low chance of regressions.
I've tested out each of the functionalities it is replacing and all of
them work. The code base has been well tested and missed landing by a
  couple of hours.

It adds 6 buttons Shutdown, Restart, Suspend, Lock, Logout.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1321309] Re: [Indicators] Missed calendar or alarm events need to be properly indicated

Daniela, what fix was committed? I don't see missed alarms mentioned in
the indicators UX document.

Also, the TimeAndDate spec still lists "how to show missed events" as an
unresolved issue: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TimeAndDate#Unresolved_issues

Imagine a scenario where you have a calendar event or a clock alarm to
go of at 10:00. If you get a call at the same time, then obviously the
call gets the highest priority and the alarm or calendar audible
notification is suppressed by the system. So a phone user can actually
  miss the event.

This can be resolved by turning the alarm icon shown in the indicator
to blue similar to messages to indicate that an alarm or event was
  missed by the user.

  Desired solution:

The alarm icon turns its state to active like notification
center/messages indicator as suggested in the bug description.

Utopic amd64 does not work on Lenovo ThinkCentre. Intel Core 2 duo 3.0

Just did an install here today, using the last 3.16.0-6 iso I have

Updated to latest amd64 .iso, 26 August, which includes the 3.16.0-10

3.16.0-10 kernel, boots to wallpaper. No compiz hence no unity.

Reboot selecting 3.16.0-6 out of /boot, compiz and unity running.

Whatever is wrong, it's in the ubuntu kernel. Everything else is the
same.

BTW, i386 32 bit 3.16.0-10 compiz and unity run. And of course Lubuntu
amd64 running fine, no compiz.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
The panel should have a print indicator as long as there are any print jobs
queued or processed. Currently, this indicator never appears, even though
printing works fine.

This is because the service that listens to CUPS fails to register its
D-Bus name (as of revision 68), which results in the panel component
not finding the service. The attached branch fixes this by making the
service register the name the panel expects.

  [Test Case]
Print a document from any application and check whether the print indicator
appears while it is printing.

  [Regression Potential]
Almost none. The print indicator is not working at all right now, and the fix
only touches that indicator.

  [Original Description]
even after lates updates still no printer notifications in the panel . I
checked and the package "indicator-printers" is correctly installed and the
printer prints without problems. But, there is no notification icons on unity
panel. I had no problems at all with 13.10 instead

Because WebApps don't need to be 'installed' in the traditional sense,
and they are very lightweight, we would like to ship 13.04 with all
  WebApps installed by default.

This will solve the problem of WebApps not appearing in the Dash Apps
  Lens.

We will still need the WebApps 'discovery' popup that appears under
the URL bar in the Firefox and Chromium browsers. However we will
need to change the text to say:

"This website is available as an Ubuntu webapp. Would you like to pin
  it's icon to the Launcher?"

The default button text should change to "Pin to Launcher", with a
  secondary option of "No thanks!"

This change mirrors the work we are doing with the Smart Scopes
project where all of the available scopes will be installed by
  default.

Bug description:
First, thank you very much for this option! I use (and maintain)
Ubuntu on a lot of older computers with resolutions of 1024x768,
1366x768 and 1280x800, and the first complaint I often get from new
users is "everything is so big". This is good if you have Full HD
screens with very small pixels, but bad if you don't. So I install
Ubuntu Tweak, reduce font sizes and Dash icon sizes and so on.

The "UI Scale" option is a very welcome addition to the list of
settings that Ubuntu offers. However, it is a little buggy: if I
reduce the UI scale to e.g. 0.875 (btw: why the 1/8 scaling? Why not
5% or 10% instead of 12.5%?), many things don't "fit" any more:

  - Dash tooltips
  - ubuntu-bug progress window buttons
  - etc.

It should be verified that at least the default apps' texts and
buttons still fit in their respective windows.

Also, would it be feasible to make this a "zoom factor" slider that

  - allows finer control (5% steps)? Anything below 80% and above 120% is
probably only for Retina displays. So, maybe 5% steps between 50% and 200% are
feasible?
  - automatically adjusts the "text scaling factor" accordingly, like the
Advanced Settings app and Ubuntu Tweak can do
  - maybe automatically adjusts the Dash icon size?

  Thank you!

Bug description:
Unity has recently (~2014-07-15) started exhibiting two odd behaviors that
are likely related:
  1) The launcher, which is set to autohide, will appear and disappear in <1s
(even though I hover over the launcher). It is unresponsive to clicks.
  2) All applets in the top panel are unresponsive to clicks.

1 & 2 always occur together at some point during a session. That is,
these components work correctly for hours (days?), then become
  unresponsive. I have not yet identified the trigger event;
screenlocking or suspend/resume *may* be related, but not reliably so
  (i.e., I can't reproduce it this way).

  Restarting unity-panel-service (killall unity-panel-service) doesn't
help. The problem is temporarily fixed by logging out/in or rebooting,
  but the issue recurs.

The timing of the first occurrence (in July) is probably consistent
with my first use of unity-tweak-tool to set focus follows mouse,
although this hypothesis doesn't explain why the components initially
work and then become unresponsive. Otherwise, my config is pretty
  stock.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1357746] Re: Compiz fails to load with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu1 on some Intel hardware

2014-08-27 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The logs attached to this bug indicates an error originating in the
Nouveau video driver on startup, which has nothing to do with Compiz
(other than the video driver does not then offer required functionality
for Compiz to run) or the Intel video driver.

[ 8.553] (EE) NOUVEAU(G0): Failed to initialise context object:
2D_NVC0 (0)

If the problem occurs only with certain versions of the Linux kernel,
it's likely the problem is either in the Linux kernel or in the Nouveau
video driver and not Compiz.

The original description of this problem indicates an error originating
with the Intel video driver, which has nothing to do with Compiz (other
than the video driver does not then offer required functionality for
Compiz to run). If the problem occurs after upgrading the video driver
or kernel or only with certain versions of the kernel but not Compiz,
it's likely that the video driver or kernel is the cause of the problem
and not Compiz.

It is not clear from the logs and the description of this report it two
separate and unrelated video driver problems or kernel problems are
being combined into one bug report. It's fairly clear it's not a
problem that can be solved by the Compiz package.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1362033] [NEW] Wrong date icon shown in calendar

2014-08-27 Thread David McKelvie
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 14.04.01 LTS and the gnome-flashback-session, I have an indicator
applet in the top panel.
'About' says version 12.10.1.
Clicking on the time text gives me a popup calendar showing the date and the
current month.

So far so good.

However today the date is correctly saying Wednesday, 27 August 2014,
but the small icon to the left of this text is showing '28' !

I'm not able to take a screen shot of the popup calendar.

apt-cache policy indicator-applet says

indicator-applet:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 12.10.2+14.04.20140403-0ubuntu1

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1362026] [NEW] toggle-shaded not working as it should

2014-08-27 Thread sandro
Public bug reported:

Dear admins, please feel free to move this report to the appropriate
place in case. I was waiting for someone who knows how to file a bug
report to do it, but after half a year I give up waiting.

Problem is that when you toggle-shaded, defaulting to 'Ctrl-Alt-s' in
dconf (org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings) or to double-click top-bar on a
window the window just disappears instead of showing you only the top
bar. Additionally it is impossible for me to get the disappeared window
back, for example via alt-tab.

Remark: toggle-shaded behaves like this only since I upgraded to trusty
(14.04).

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
