battery indicator and brightness settings should have brightness
  slider; battery settings shouldn't

Status in “indicator-power” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “ubuntu-system-settings” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The current phone design has three brightness sliders that do exactly the
same thing:
  * System Settings > "Brightness"
  * System Settings > "Battery"
  * the Battery menu.

This is kind of ridiculous. We should get rid of one or two.

  : "'Display brightness' should
navigate to a mirror of the 'Brightness' screen."

  : "The brightness slider
should exactly mirror the one in the Brightness settings panel."

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1315369]

2014-09-12 Thread Rodrigo-vivi
Hi Maarten,

Our QA couldn't reproduce the issue here, Paulo couldn't reproduce the
issue as well. I tried with IVB, eDP+HDMI and couldn't reproduce.

Then I went to our lab and got a SNB with LVDS and DP, installed a fresh
14.04, configured the external monitor to the left side and waited 5
minutes and also couldn't reproduce the issue. after 5 minutes it is
lock and black and after I move the mouse everything just light up and I
can normally log in.

On launchpad bugzillas I've seem people reporting the issue with non intel gpu.
or with hibrid using fglrx.

Please provide more info here. Can you double check if this happens even
without hibrid and without the fglrx driver and provide the logs?

Thanks,
Rodrigo.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1330037] Re: [FFe] upower 0.99.1 transition

2014-09-12 Thread Stephen Michael Kellat
As a member of Xubuntu Team, I'm objecting to this landing as a Feature
Freeze Exception as there is inadequate time to test this to ensure it
works for 14.10. This is landing awfully late and as this is only a 9
months of support release we could avoid risks rushing it out now by
having it wait for 15.04.

Final Beta Freeze is September 22nd. To test something new this late
that would be added effectively across all flavors does not seem
socially appropriate. I understand this may block GNOME 3.12 landing
but Ubuntu's archive is shared among many desktop environments. There
are always setbacks and things we do not get accomplished during semi-
annual cycles. We can best look at this again during Victorious
Velociraptor or whatever we name the next cycle.

Bug description:
upower 0.99 needs uploading for gnome 3.12 to enter ubuntu. It drops
the suspend/hibernate functions, as logind now does that. All major
DEs have support for this,so nearly everything just needs a rebuild.
  This bug tracks the transition.

A transition is required as some features were removed and the SONAME
  was changed

All packages (and build logs) are staged in
  https://launchpad.net/~noskcaj/+archive/upower/+packages

sugar will probably need removing. If a package only needs a rebuild,
mark it fix commited, if something else is needed, in progress.

  cairo-dock-plug-ins: needs rebuilding
gnome-shell - ready, just need to drop upower revert.
  gnome-control-center: WIP
gnome-packagekit: Upower dropped from newest upstream release.
gnome-power-manager: Fixed in newest upstream release. Merge from debian
gnome-session: Done in ppa, needs patches from git or new upstream release
gnome-settings-daemon: 3.12 is ready out of the box, however that also
requires gnome-desktop transition. 3.8 and also u-s-d: I have a package that is
mostly working, however had to cherry-pick quite a few patches and may just be
better to backport 3.12 power plugin. (considering g-s-d patches will be
temporary, but u-s-d not so)
kde: works fine with systemd, suspend broken with upstart, no rebuilds needed
  cinnamon: Rebuild
mate: all mate packages need rebuilding
  python-dbusmock: needs rebuild
sugar: Upstream bug now filed. Unlikely to be ready in time for 14.10. We
should remove this from the archive till the next upstream release

  wmbattery: needs rebuild
  xfce4-power-manager: Needs rebuilding

[Dx-packages] [Bug 874211] Re: mini-preview of minimized Google Chrome windows blank

2014-09-12 Thread Greggth
Hi,
I think I'm having the same problem, as well as another related one.
1) I see similar, but slightly different behavior with the preview:
"Use system title bar and borders" *checked* -- preview broken sometimes.
"Use system title bar and borders" *unchecked" -- preview broken sometimes.

2) The other problem: After being minimized, the window comes up all white
except for the title bar. It doesn't re-render the screen until it's resized.
This is really annoying, but I don't know if should be considered part of the
same bug. There's another bug in Chromium that sounds somewhat like this, but
maybe not exactly the same either
(https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=340138)
"Use system title bar and borders" *checked* window restores as blank white
window.
"Use system title bar and borders" *unchecked* window restores properly

  Hi,

I've found several general usability issues using Unity (over the last
couple years). I didn't think I could explain the issues in text, so
I just drew up some quick mockups here for this bug report:

  http://sevkeifert.blogspot.com/2014/08/ubuntu-1404-unity-usability-

How these issues are interpreted, of course, contains a subjective
element. Though how an interface conforms to a given set of design
principles can be given a more objective measure. Hopefully something
  is useful here ...

  thanks,
  Kevin

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1364453] Re: Brightness setting does not persist across reboots

I agree that this should be a systemwide preference and that it's not in
this patch.

In this patch it's grouped with the existing auto-brightness setting,
which should probably *also* be a systemwide one post-RTM.

Bug description:
Section bullets are hard to discover and confusing, in both unity 7
  and 8.

Unity7+8: A small set of applications/icons are shown under each
heading making it look like that heading is already fully expanded.
Result: The user never thinks to tap on the heading (like "Installed")
  again to see more apps/icons.

Unity 8: Arrows next to headings are misleading:
  Collapsed: Heading v
  Expanded: Heading ^
Again, the down arrow suggests the list is already fully expanded so users
don't think to tap on it again to further expand the list. Many people will
expect the more familiar convention:
  Collapsed: Heading >
  Expanded: Heading v

On a touch image this leads to simple but frustrating problems like
the user never finding "System Settings". Because it's non-obvious
they need to tap on "Applications" which looks like it's already
  expanded.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1364453] Re: Brightness setting does not persist across reboots

2014-09-12 Thread Michael Terry
This isn't a deal-breaker, but consider the future case of a Touch split
greeter (or the desktop case where it's a current reality). What should
the starting device brightness be on boot?

It seems like you are intending to store this value per-user inside the
user session's gsettings database, which may not be accessible by boot
time (in the split greeter cases -- encrypted home directories and all
that). Even storing in AccountsService would feel weird, since this is
kind of a device-wide setting, right?

Imagine a scenario where you have a calendar event or a clock alarm to
go of at 10:00. If you get a call at the same time, then obviously the
call gets the highest priority and the alarm or calendar audible
notification is suppressed by the system. So a phone user can actually
  miss the event.

This can be resolved by turning the alarm icon shown in the indicator
to blue similar to messages to indicate that an alarm or event was
  missed by the user.

  Desired solution:

The alarm icon turns its state to active like notification
center/messages indicator as suggested in the bug description.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1350952] Re: [Indicators] replace the text "Empty!" with something more useful

2014-09-12 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I think we're confusing three issues here.

First, the Transfers menu should show something more appropriate, like
"No active transfers" or something, when there are none. That requires
design work.

Second, the Notifications list should show something more appropriate,
like "None" or something, when there are none. That requires separate
design work.

Third, some code in the indicator system itself is inserting the word
"Empty!" into empty indicator menus and should not. For example, right
now I'm getting "Empty!" in, of all places, the Network menu (bug
1368675). That should never happen ... but when it *does* happen, for
whatever reason, it should be something more elegant, like a silhouetted
error icon, or even nothing at all.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1346355] Re: 14.04 power-cog does not turn red when restart is needed

2014-09-12 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Greg, there are two misunderstandings here. First, it is not always true
that "The power-cog is where users go to shutdown/restart their
computer". Some people only ever put their computer to sleep and wake it
up again, by closing and opening the lid; they don't shut down or
restart unless explicitly prompted, so futzing with the cog icon would
be meaningless to them. Second, it is not correct that "the user needs
to go to the Power-Cog to accomplish" the restart. There's a much more
obvious "Restart Now" button in the restart-required alert. If Software
Updater is crashing somehow before it displays that alert on your
parents' computer, please report that as a separate bug. Thanks!

Bug description:
In ubuntu 12.04 the power-cog turned red when a reboot/restart was
needed. This was a helpful feature because it informed users that they
needed to restart the computer. But this helpful indicator is gone in
14.04 and it has resulted in me never remembering to restart my
computer because there is no helpful feedback from ubuntu that a
  restart is needed.

In 14.04, I will perform an update and a popup tells me a Restart is
needed but I usually select to restart-later because I am in the
middle of working. By the the time I am done working I have forgotten
that a restart is needed. Later when I am working again a popup occurs
informing me that a restart is needed (but again I am in the middle of
working so I don't restart). Bottom line: when the power-cog turned
red, it reminded me that I needed to restart the computer. When I
finished my work I look up and see the red power-cog and "Oh yeah, I
need to restart. Now is a good time." In 14.04 this doesn't happen.
Instead I'm perpetually bugged by a popup (which is useless because
it's never a good time to restart when it pops up). The red power-cog
was a much BETTER design choice.

The removal of the power-cog turning red has negatively affected the
management of ubuntu updates and it should be fixed so that it behaves
  like 12.04.

There are a number of workarounds. Sometimes I can use ctrl-alt-f7 or

Sometimes it is necessary to switch to ctrl-alt-f1 and restart

  4. powerd-cli display on bright # leave running, also unlock the screen so
that lenses are shown
  [terminal 2]
  5. phablet-config autopilot --dbus-probe enable # wait until finishes
  6. phablet-test-run ubuntuuitoolkit

A full test suite run will take around 0.5h and should produce a bunch
  of 'Application failed to start.':s.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1368620] [NEW] Hard to tell which dock apps are running / not running

2014-09-12 Thread mcandre
Public bug reported:

The colorized background of dock icons makes it harder for me to tell
which apps are running. I would prefer that the dock icon backgrounds
remain the same color regardless of icon content, and that the same
color is used across apps to indicate a running app. This would make it
easier at a glance for me to tell which apps are running and which are
not.

Similarly, some applications have rather large dock icons, such as the
Wunderlist browser app. When this happens, there is very little room for
a background color, so any such change in the dock icon when the app
launches / quits is barely noticeable. In the future, could Ubuntu scale
down all dock icons to the same size, allowing for some padding for
background colors?

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Tags: dock icon icons

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1368615] [NEW] Alt+Shift+Tilde (~) should switch windows in reverse order

2014-09-12 Thread mcandre
Public bug reported:

There's a GUI convention for navigation: adding the Shift modifier to a
hotkey is typically interpreted as 'do the same thing as the hotkey,
except in the other direction'. Control+Tab+Shift may visit the previous
Web browser tab. Control+Z+Shift may redo the last edit, and so on.

Ubuntu offers Alt+Tab for switching between windows, and Alt+Tilde for
switching between windows of the same application. Ubuntu also offers
Alt+Shift+Tab for switching between windows in reverse order.

However, Ubuntu, or some odd dependency, neglected to make a
corresponding Alt+Shift+Tilde hotkey for switching between windows of
the same application in reverse order.

Please add this missing hotkey.
