Title:
[touch] indicator needs to be able to control volume per audio role

Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
From the Sound design for Touch (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#Phone),
we need to change the default behaviour of the indicator in order to
be able to change volume per audio roles, and not only the master
  volume.

On touch the master volume will always be at 100%, and each media role
will have its own volume values, so we can have a different volume
level for multimedia, ringtone and alarms.

This can be done using the streamrestore module in pulseaudio (via another
dbus entry point that is only enabled on touch atm):

http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/Developer/Clients/DBus/StreamRestore/

There's also a sample script on python that can be used to set/get volume per
roles:
  https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jusa/pulseaudio-utils/master/pasr.py

And the current roles supporter by touch are: multimedia, alert, phone
  and alarm.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1371645] Re: Fault in Unity prevents proper GUI start. Lightdm and Compiz work.

Here are some accompanying files: bugs.tar includes history.log and

All graphics elements that depend on Unity do not work. However I am
able to login through lightdm and compiz loads, so I can have some
GUI. (I will update with pictures, once I figure out how to access my
  system properly)

I have gone thoroughly over the updates that led to this issue and
  have narrowed the culprit.

What I did was to go to /var/log/apt/history.log and manually follow
the trail of packages (including drivers) to isolate the issue. It
turns out since the last update of unity and systemd (+related)
packages, unity does not work with Nvidia's drivers any more. (I will
update with the history.log as soon as I can find a way to upload
  without unity).

However, compiz and lightdm work flawlessly at the moment and if I
revert updates (for unity and accompanying) way back, unity loads as
  well.

Shadow applied inconsistently to windows that use XShape

Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
When using the XShape APIs*, windows that have a rectangular shape are
treated like normal windows (they get a title bar and shadow) even if
the rectangular region is much smaller than the window.

When a non-rectangular window changes its shape to be rectangular, it
gains a shadow that remains even after changing its shape back to be
  non-rectangular.

Ideally there would always be a shadow that matches the shape of the
  window.

In the mean time, the correct behavior might be to remove the shadow
whenever a shape is applied. If the application wishes to remove an
applied shape, they could do something like:

XShapeCombineMask(d, w, ShapeBounding, 0, 0, None, ShapeSet);

Please let me know if you need any more details, or if I'm missing
something. (Unfortunately, the ubuntu-bug tool wouldn't work when
  filing this bug).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1368615] Re: Alt+Shift+` (key-above-tab) should switch windows in reverse order

2014-09-19 Thread Treviño
Unity does support the Shift modifier to go back in both Alt+Tab and
Alt+` (or Alt+~ in your keyboard), but only after you've opened the view
with the normal keybinding (i.e. without shift). This actually seems to
me the same behavior of Firefox (the "shift" version of the key binding
only works after that you've initialized the switcher first).

There's a GUI convention for navigation: adding the Shift modifier to
a hotkey is typically interpreted as 'do the same thing as the hotkey,
except in the other direction'. Control+Tab+Shift may visit the
previous Web browser tab. Control+Z+Shift may redo the last edit, and
  so on.

Ubuntu offers Alt+Tab for switching between windows, and Alt+Tilde for
switching between windows of the same application. Ubuntu also offers
Alt+Shift+Tab for switching between windows in reverse order.

However, Ubuntu, or some odd dependency, neglected to make a
corresponding Alt+Shift+Tilde hotkey for switching between windows of
the same application in reverse order.

  Please add this missing hotkey.

choice is to implement the "Snooze" functionality and replace the "Show" button
with "Snooze".

However "Snooze" was decided to be implemented as part of the SDK
Alarms API which is worked on by zsombor. As per the blueprint at [1],
the snooze functionality was to be implemented in revision 0.2 (post-
RTM). However we require a solution to the above issue before RTM.

  - Proposed Solution -
It was decided after discussing with Mirco Mueller, Giorgio Venturi and
Daniela Ferrai to implement the Snooze functionality as a workaround in the
Indicator-datetime by dismissing the notification and showing it again after
the snooze duration. The full design spec is described below.

  1. Provide a settings option in dbus to set the snooze duration that
the clock app can expose in the settings page to allow the user to
choose the snooze duration. This is shown in [2]. The snooze duration
  options will be 2, 4, 5 and 10 minutes.

  2. On pressing the "Ok" button in the snap notification, the alarm
will be dismissed permanently for the day.

  3. If the user pressed "Snooze", then indicator-datetime should
dismiss the snap notification and show it again after the snooze
duration. This process will be repeated until the alarm timeout
defined by the user in the clock app settings. By default that timeout
  is 30 minutes.

This will require a Go/No-Go decision from Charles Kerr regarding the
implementation in indicator-datetime since as mentioned above this
will be a workaround and workaround are not permanent solutions.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1315434] Re: Mouse with no time remaining estimate showing in preference to battery being charged

2014-09-19 Thread Allan Barnes
I was under the impression my laptop was at 70% when it shut off just a
few minutes ago, but what I was actually seeing was my mouse battery.
Even now, it has just started charging and still the mouse shows up
first. And even if I turn the mouse off it STILL overrides the laptop
battery.

Need a way to force laptop charge considering the importance of it.

Status in “indicator-power” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
When my laptop battery is in a charging state, but is not fully
charged, I expect it to be displayed in preference to my mouse, which
  has no time remaining estimate.

  The spec here:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Power

  says:

"If anything is discharging, the menu title should represent the
component (not battery, but component) that is estimated to lose power
first. For example, if your notebook battery is estimated to discharge
in 1 hour 47 minutes, and your wireless mouse battery is estimated to
discharge in 27 minutes, the menu title should represent the mouse. "

but there doesn't seem to be any guideline to what happens when a
  battery is being charged.

I suggest the time remaining to charge a battery should be displayed
in preference to the power level in a wireless mouse.

(I will

it easier at a glance for me to tell which apps are running and which

Similarly, some applications have rather large dock icons, such as the
Wunderlist browser app. When this happens, there is very little room
for a background color, so any such change in the dock icon when the
app launches / quits is barely noticeable. In the future, could Ubuntu

Bug description:
Currently the code in zenity_question() looks like:

  if (!g_spawn_check_exit_status (exit_status, &error))
confirmed = TRUE;
  else
confirmed = exit_status == 0;

However !g_spawn_check_exit_status() call is mostly equivalent to
"exit_status != 0". Thus, confirmed will be *always* set to TRUE, even
if the user cancelled the dialog.

I have prepared a branch to fix this.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1371645] [NEW] Fault in Unity prevents proper GUI start. Lightdm and Compiz work.

2014-09-19 Thread Konstantin Gizdov
Public bug reported:

All graphics elements that depend on Unity do not work. However I am
able to login through lightdm and compiz loads, so I can have some GUI.
(I will update with pictures, once I figure out how to access my system
properly)

I have gone thoroughly over the updates that led to this issue and have
narrowed the culprit.

What I did was to go to /var/log/apt/history.log and manually follow the
trail of packages (including drivers) to isolate the issue. It turns out
since the last update of unity and systemd (+related) packages, unity
does not work with Nvidia's drivers any more. (I will update with the
history.log as soon as I can find a way to upload without unity).

However, compiz and lightdm work flawlessly at the moment and if I
revert updates (for unity and accompanying) way back, unity loads as
well.

Further updates will follow below.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1371590] [NEW] Global menu bar snatches defeat from the jaws of victory, à la Windows 95 Start button

2014-09-19 Thread Michael Doube
Public bug reported:

There is a really old usability bug relating to mouse accuracy, which
Ubuntu 14.04 has rediscovered in its global menu.

Basically, it's super easy to move your pointer fast and hard to the
extreme edge and corners of the screen, so you can hit targets placed
there quickly. But the global menu only activates if the cursor is a
pixel or two from the top of the screen. This is a massive usability
bug.

The example from the 90s (yes, 20 years ago) is that Win 95's start
button was offset from the bottom left corner by a couple of pixels.
That made it hard for people to hit, and if they'd only put it flush
with the bottom left it would have been way way easier to click. Hence
"snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" - e.g. in this post from
2000 http://www.joelonsoftware.com/uibook/chapters/fog63.html

Hopefully this is an easy fix: extend the mouseover activation area for
the global menu to the top of the screen. Right to the top zeroth row of
pixels. Please?

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

upower exposes a well-known name on the system bus, so consumers
expecting this would have to be patched. Then we'd need to either rename
the symbols or make sure that the two versions aren't going to be loaded
in the same process.

I feel like there's not much time remaining this cycle, but if someone
from GNOME wants to analyse and then do the work it might be okay.

this cycle only for Gnome to use to they won't be blocked on updating.

We've heard Xubuntu's objections. To me they seem strident enough to say
that we should delay this until the next cycle. I guess there could have
been more coordinated testing earlier on.

Jackson, Tim, are you okay with this? If everything stays ready, you
could upload first-ish thing in the V cycle. I'd help you with
sponsoring and prodding of Canonical upstreams if you need it.
