Title:
firefox icon frequently replaced by placeholder

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Several times over the last week I have noticed that the when I start
firefox, the default icon is replaced by a grey square with a question mark in
the center as shown in the attached image.
The only fix I've found is to unlock firefox from the launcher, quit the
program, search for "firefox" in the dash, manually drag the icon onto the
launcher, and then open it(i.e. if I start firefox directly from the dash, the
grey icon appears on the launcher again).
I haven't noticed this occurring with any other program.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

The upstart script for unity-gtk-module causes it to run under all
desktop environments indiscriminately when it should only be running
under Unity. It does this by adding unity-gtk-module to the
  environment variable GTK_MODULES.

In Xfce, this causes the panel to crash when trying to add Unity
indicators, as well as other related side effects (see: LP: #1314782,
  LP: #1347272).

The fix to ensure we only modify GTK_MODULES under Unity is already in
  14.10.

  [Test Case]

Log into a Xubuntu session on a machine that has both ubuntu-desktop
and xubuntu-desktop. Add the Indicator Plugin to the panel and open a
terminal window. A crash dialog should appear notifying the user that
the Indicator Plugin unexpectedly left the panel.

  [Regression Potential]

The potential for regression is low since the only change is to
preserve the original value of the GTK_MODULES environment variable,
as well as to never set UBUNTU_MENUPROXY. The fix restores the desktop
environment to its intended state of not running unity-gtk-module.
Also, I've tested the change under Unity, and application menus still
work properly under the global menu without regression.

  === original bug report ===

To reproduce: either start with a fresh Ubuntu install and then
install xubuntu-desktop, or start with Xubuntu and then install
ubuntu-desktop - ie have both Xfce and Unity installed on the same
  machine.

Xfce now has support for gtk3 indicators launched by upstart, but
indicator-appmenu is totally broken - it will constantly crash the
panel and applications. Xfce has a mechanism to hide indicators, and
then the frontend UI will not be loaded in the panel, but it seems
that UBUNTU_MENUPROXY is still being set in Xfce, which causes menus
to disappear from applications, even though nothing is available to
  receive them.

I discussed this with tedg and he suggested that the problem may be to
do with the upstart service which sets UBUNTU_MENUPROXY, ie
  /usr/share/upstart/sessions/unity-gtk-module.conf

We may in future get the appmenus working in Xfce, and then we would
need some way to turn the menuproxy on and off depending on the user
configuration. But for now, since they are broken anyway, it would be
easiest to simply blacklist xubuntu desktop completely.

1.8.0_25-b17, Ubuntu 14.10, and Eclipse. However, after upgrading to
Java 8, the seg faults I'm seeing have moved to from g_str_hash() to
g_type_check_instance_is_a()

Gmail webapp stops working and can't recover

Bug description:
  ubuntu-rtm image 184 on Krillin

Was using the phone a lot during the break and experienced Gmail
getting into a state where it would launch and have a white screen.
You could not recover even after killing and restarting the app. This
happened mulitple times. I believe the online account service possibly
is getting killed by the OOM killer and trying to launch Gmail after
  this occurs does not work.

If this is the case, we should a) try to not let account service be
killed by oom killer and b) recover gracefully if the service is not
running and still allow the app to be launced.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) setup online account for Google and Gmail
  2) unplug the phone from USB
  3) launch gmail webapp and a lot of other apps
  4) kill gmail but leave other apps running
  5) use the phone for a while and let it suspend for a while (5-10 minutes)
  6) try and launch gmail and you get a blank white screen, see the log below.
  7) kill and restart gmail with the same error

The only way I could make it work again was to delete the online
  account or reboot

  3. Notice that windows that are not in the focused workspaces have no
decorations

  [ Test Case ]

See above: decorations should be present with fix.

  [ Regression Potential ]

Decorations in the Spread could be drawn incorrectly.

  [ Other Info ]

Fix for Ubuntu 14.01 LTS was cherry-picked from upstream Unity where
it has been in production testing in Ubuntu "Vivid Vervet" dev release
for a few months with no regression.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1407694] Re: Gmail webapp stops working and can't recover

2015-01-05 Thread Alberto Mardegan
I've seen this happening before. It's not due to the OOM (and in fact,
all the Online Accounts daemons automatically quit after a few seconds
of inactivity), but rather to the service being stuck due to bug 1377968
(see comment #2 there).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1059275] Re: reset now deprecated, man page not updated

2015-01-05 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Attached debdiff between trusty-updates and SRU.

** Branch unlinked: lp:~unity-team/unity/trusty-1059275

** Patch added: "debdiff between unity_7.2.3+14.04.20140826-0ubuntu1 and
unity_7.2.4+14.04.20141217-0ubuntu1"

** Description changed:

- Run "unity --reset" as recommended by the man page:-
+ [ Impact ]

- "ERROR: the reset option is now deprecated"
+ The manpage for the "unity" command reflects the actual available
+ options.

- Man page says:-
+ [ Test Case ]

- " --reset This option allows the user to reset profile
- parameters in compiz and restart the Unity shell with default settings."
+ Run "man unity". It should not say "--reset" is a valid command-line
+ switch (option).
+
+ [ Regression Potential ]
+
+ This is a change to the man page. I suppose it might be a regression if
+ the man page still does not match the option available in the 'unity'
+ command. Not terribly serious.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1358340] Re: [Indicators] Complete greeter profiles

2015-01-05 Thread Olga Kemmet
"And the default for A should be off and the default for B should be on?"
I would say yes, at least for the time being.
Maybe an easier overview of these settings for the user is needed.
[A] - always allow
[B] - restricted access
[C] - no access
They obviously will need better wording and some explanation to users what they
set. :)
The default would be [A]. And anything else can be set by the user. I feel that
currently it is rather confusing.

Bug description:
A recent change in the interest of security removed access to the
indicators when the phone is locked and the greeter is showing.

This was an accentual change based on a misunderstanding

There had been a plan to support media playback control via the sound
indicator. Without this the user must unlock the phone in order to
simply pause the music or change songs, etc.

  Desired resolution:

  - Revert the change that caused this issue

  - Add a switch to System Settings to enable security conscious user to
switch off Launcher and Greeter access while the phone is locked.
This setting should *always* be off by default.

I agree with Ted, if the media player should never "be" an app, it needs
to be a trusted prompt, overlaying the originating app, not its own
separate app in the spread etc.
