Title:
Previews for applications are really slow to display anything

Status in software-center package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix
Status in unity-lens-applications package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
I'm seeing rightly on forums and generally the Internet that 100scopes
previews are slow, combined with the fact that we now have the left
click showing the preview by default frustrate a lot of users.

On my beefy machine (i7, 8G of rams), the preview for an application
takes 3/4s to show, you can't do anything meanwhile as there is no
button to launch the application (because you didn't double click,
just left click and thought "argh, I should have double click").

Because of this, we are making the 1st landing of 100 scopes
experience bad and we should fix it (at least, in that applicatoin
lens) by either preloading the software-center-dbus
  (/usr/share/software-center/software-center-dbus) daemon (we can't
have it always running as it's taking over 100MB of memory) when
hovering an app lens result, or when it's the first result (so can be
  directly triggered by pressing [Enter])

IMPORTANT 1: Please don't post any "me too message"; use the "Does
this bug affect you?" feature you can find a bit above this bug
  description on Launchpad.

IMPORTANT 2: Do not post anything if you haven't read all comments to
verify that your point hasn't been made. If you feel tempted to stop
reading because there are too many messages, that is a strong
indicator that you shouldn't add even more comments. Developers have a
tough time to find anything if you post redundant stuff. So please
  abstain from doing that.

  =
Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users. Please try to find a solution for it that works.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in
the duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that
tracks the implementation of this project.

The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed
  ---

Bug description:

  3) Logout and Login again will fix this problem.

Very disappointed to Ununtu X.10 versions. I ALWAYS had some troubles with
them and 13.04 is not an exception.

Title:
[power]: gnome-control-center crashes if indicator-power is not
  installed in Unity

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:
  Triaged
Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [ Description ]

  gnome-control-center's power panel crashes when indicator-power isn't
  installed.

  [ Test case ]

  1. Uninstall indicator-power
  2. Open System Settings and click Power
  3. System Settings crashes

At 3 it shouldn't crash. If you have indicator-power installed, you
should see the option to configure whether it shows.

  [ Regression potential ]

This adds some new code to check if the GSettings schema is installed, since
that's a reliable way to check for indicator-power's presence, and is what the
code modifies. It also makes the option appear in DEs other than Unity.

There's a chance that the GSettings schema-detection work could be wrong. It
also wouldn't hurt to check non-Unity environments such as a gnome-panel
  session.

  [ Original report ]

I see that unity recommends indicator-power; let's make it a depends
  instead.

In my opinion this happen because the first time the network bubble
were displayed the calculation of the top margin where made while
there was no panel because ubuntu was just starting, and the
brightness bubble were displayed after the panel were displayed and
  top margin has changed.

  2. Press the Super key.

  What happens:
  * The Dash fades in.
  * At the same time, the launcher slides in from the edge.

What should happen: When two or more elements appear because of a
single action, any animations should be the same.

Ways in which this bug could be fixed:
  * Not have a launcher, or not have a Dash.

  * Have the launcher and Dash slide in together.
  * Have no animation when either element appears.

Bug description:
Sometimes left clicking the nautilus launcher icon doesn't bring up a
minimized nautilus window. Instead of restoring the window a new
instance of nautilus is showing up.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a nautilus window by clicking on the launcher icon.
  2. Navigate to a symlinked directory whose target is located on a different
harddrive (for example: a symlink to a folder on a sd-card).
  3. Minimize the nautilus window.
  4. Try to bring up that window again by clicking the launcher icon.

  What happens:

  1. A new instance (window) of nautilus is opened.
  2. There's no obvious way to access the first window again. The only way is
ALT+TAB.

  What schould happen:

If a nautilus window is already open and minimized clicking the
launcher icon should bring up that window. This was the behavior of
nautilus windows in Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal).

Title:
Ubuntu Time & Date applet should set GNOME 12/24-hour clock format

Status in The Date and Time Indicator:
  Confirmed
Status in “indicator-datetime” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
In GNOME, the setting /org/gnome/desktop/interface/clock-format has
value "12h" or "24h" and determines whether GNOME applications such as
Nautilus display 12-hour or 24-hour time. In vanilla GNOME's control
center there's a Time & Date applet which lets the user set this
  value.

In Ubuntu's control center, the 12/24-hour control in theTime & Date
applet sets a different value, namely
  /com/canonical/indicator/datetime/time-format. This setting
determines how the clock appears in the Unity panel, but has no effect
  on GNOME applications.

This leads to a poor and confusing user experience. The format in the
Unity panel may not match that in GNOME applications. The user has no
way to control the GNOME 12/24 hour setting through the Ubuntu control
  center.

I think the best solution here is to eliminate
  /com/canonical/indicator/datetime/time-format, to let the user
configure the underlying GNOME setting and to use that to decide how
to display the clock in Unity.

Premature lock when launching guest session

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: indicator-session

When you launch a guest session via the menu item provided by
indicator-session, indicator-session locks the regular session before
  calling /usr/share/gdm/guest-session/guest-session-launch. Since also
guest-session-launch includes code for locking, the first locking is
  redundant.

So why do I bother? The reason is that I have explored various
possibilities to customize the guest session behavior, and one of the
ideas is to let the regular user select the guest session language on-
the-fly. But if I add such code to the top of guest-session-launch and
call it via indicator-session, the screen gets locked instantly, and I
need to enter the password to be able to see the list dialog box that
  is used to select language.

I believe that the activate_guest_session() function in session-
service.c needs to be altered, so that its call for lock_if_possible()
is removed. I have attached a diff that suggests just that change.

Bug description:
If you launch an application, for example the media player, and it
take a few seconds to load there is no feedback that the OS is doing
  something.

In my usual case I am launching by double clicking on a media file and
the application can take up to 20 seconds to load. I often do not know
whether I double clicked fast enough and do it again leading to
multiple copies of the application opening (which leads to a separate
  set of issues)

In other operating systems this is normally handled by immediately
showing an hour glass icon or similar while the application is opened.

Ubuntu 11.04, default setup except desktop effects are turned off. I'm
not sure if this is easy to fix or not.

  ---
  Desired resolution:

  - As soon as a user chooses to open a file (for example by double clicking on
the file in Nautilus, or single clicking on the file in the Dash File Lens),
the 'loading' Launcher effect should be triggered *if* the target application
is not currently running.
(the 'loading' Launcher effect is currently triggered when a user clicks on a
non-running application in the launcher)

  - If the target application is not pinned to the Launcher, it should
be added to the Launcher instantaneously the moment the user chooses
  to open the file.

  - The 'application loading' should always be triggered instantaneously
when ever a application starts to load, even if the application is not
pinned to the Launcher. This includes when applications are launched
via either the Dash or the command line.

  - also fix bug #893140

Title:
notification popups/baloons get blurred instead of transparent on
  rollover

Status in “notify-osd” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
You know those baloons which appear on the upper-right corner of the
screen when you are notified of something (e.g. network manager
  generates one of these when connection is established or lost;
thunderbird generate one when you receive emails, etc).

When you move the cursor over such a popup, it should _disappear_ or
become more _transparent_, so that you can see and interact with
what's behind it. This is what used to happen with gnome (but when I
used gnome I had compiz effects disabled).

Instead, when you move the cursor over it, it becomes just _blurred_,
as if being blurred would help you see through it, which it obviously
doesn't. It doesn't become even the slightest bit more transparent,
  just blurred.

Before I upgraded from 10.10, the popup used to disappear completely
when I rolled over it, which was the most reasonable thing. However, I
had compiz effects disabled, so I don't know if the blur-instead-of-
transparency is a new wrong behaviour introduced in unity or if it has
always been the (wrong) way it behaves with the effects turned on.

Title:
The icon does not change based on the actual charge level

Status in “indicator-power” package in Ubuntu:

  indicator-power 12.10.6+13.10.20130821-0ubuntu1, Ubuntu S

The icon is always the same indicating something like 10% charge even
  when 90% charged.

: "And if it is charging, the
icon interior should feature a lightning bolt emblem. Depending on
clarity and space available, the icon interior may also be filled from
left to right approximately as much as the amount charged."

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1216120] Re: Reduce distraction of Launcher items.

2013-08-24 Thread Adolfo Jayme Barrientos
Note that since Ubuntu 12.10, Launcher icons are less distracting: their
backgrounds are only colorful if apps are running, transparent
otherwise. Also, you can set the Launcher to "auto hide" mode as a
workaround :-)

  Reduce distraction of Launcher items.

Bug description:
  Hi.

Currently, when I do coding, I see huge distruction from unity
  launcher:

  http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/6715/72443267.5/0_a831c_3aaf1b16_orig

Colorful stack of icons just get's my attention. While I know there's
an options like putting your editor fullscreen or auto-hiding
launcher, it doesn't work for me, since I loose features like super-
fast visual switch to app I want (by clicking it's icon), or
notification that something happened (skype message arrived), which
brings me to unhiding launcher from time to time just to see if
anything happened. I want to have launcher, but I want it to be not so
  distractive.

So, one of solutions I came with is to desaturate icons a bit:

  http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/9356/72443267.5/0_a831b_70f2822c_orig

This looks better, but still distractive relative to my code editor.
First, I see clear need to also adjust lightness due to your apps
(code editor window is dark, so let's also darken our icons). Second,
just for experiment, I fully decolorized icons:

  http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/6704/72443267.5/0_a831a_b0f70355_orig

This seems best for me as "non-distractive mode" when I code. I know
this feature is our of priority, but maybe one of you will get excited
  of this one :)

  Thanks!
