system-config-printer-gnome depends on python-gobject, which means
python-gobject cannot be removed from the system. python-gobject is a
transitional package, and packages should be updated to no longer
  depend on it.

  [Test Case]

  * Install system-config-printer-gnome, and verify that python-gobject
  is not installed with it.

  * If it is already installed, you should be able to run 'apt-get purge
  python-gobject' without removing system-config-printer-gnome.

Negligible. There are no code changes. The fix only removes a

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1374451] [NEW] Unintended slow keys looks like bug

2014-09-26 Thread Fred H Olson
Public bug reported:

This is more of a "feature" than a bug... If slow keys gets turned on somehow
and the user is not aware of this,
it can look like the keyboard is not working. I spent days (10?) with the
consultation of my local Ubuntu folks before someone
finally thought of slow keys. One suggestion was to reinstall Ubuntu,
fortunately I resisted this long enough to
learn of slow keys. This has been my most frustrating problem with Ubuntu
(since 6.06)

It appears that in normal use, the chance of holding down a key long enough
that it is accepted when one
is not aware of slow keys is very small so it just looks like the keyboard
input is not being accepted.

There are a few other instances of this problem on the web but not
enough to become a prime suspect easily.

I dont know how slow keys got turned on.

I suggest having a box appear at bootup that reminds the user:

>Universal Access >Typing Slow Keys is active. Hold keys down to get
input accepted.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1243233] Re: Holding Super key doesn't bring up shortcut overlay.

2014-01-15 Thread Fred
@ Bruno,

For what it's worth, my laptop screen resolution is 1366x768 and ever
since the last Ubuntu kernel update, the overlay hints has been working
fine on my machine, granted workspaces is disabled as mentioned in my
previous post. I never use workspaces, so that doesn't apply to my
particular use case.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1243233] Re: Holding Super key doesn't bring up shortcut overlay.

2014-01-10 Thread Fred
@ Bruno,

A friend of mine also uses Ubuntu 13.10 and he brought to my attention
that he's also experiencing this same issue as you. He couldn't figure
out why my machine was able to see shortcut hints overlay but his
couldn't? He looked over my machine and his in a side-by-side comparison
since we both own laptops and he figured it out. His machine has
workspaces enabled and mine doesn't. He enabled workspaces on my machine
and the shortcut hints overlay no longer worked.

Funny thing is, the kernel update from 01-04 partially fixes this issue,
only if workspaces is disabled. I don't use workspaces and I think
starting in Ubuntu 13.04 (or maybe it was 13.10), they stopped enabling
workspaces by default? Needless to say, this issue did persist while
workspaces was disabled as you can see in my previous postings here. The
latest kernel update fixed it for me since I don't have workspaces
enabled.

So now we've narrowed down this bug being specific to workspaces being
enabled.

I also experience this same behavior as well. I upgraded from 13.04 to

no shortcut hints overlay.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1224621] Re: Removing libunity9 also removes nautilus and other packages

2013-10-16 Thread Fred
This means you can't use Brasero, Dejadup and Nautilus without having
libunity installed?

Yuck!
Good system architecture should be highly cohesive, loosely coupled.
This is tightly coupled. :(

Not everyone like Unity, and not everyone wants Unity installed.

I see, I was worried about removing that once since the package

that it not be removed."

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232301] Re: Removing Unity also removes ubuntu-desktop

2013-09-29 Thread Fred
You claim that I can uninstall Unity, but when I attempt to do so, it
also removes ubuntu-desktop.

How am I supposed to uninstall Unity?
Isn't it possible to make the ubuntu-desktop package recommend instead of
depend on Unity?

I don't want this Unity on my system.

Bug description:
The "Ctrl + Alt + numpad 4" and "Ctrl + Alt + numpad 6" keyboard
shortcuts are not working in 13.04.

See bug #878820 for the full specification of the numpad window
placement shortcuts. Quoting from this bug:

"Ctrl-Alt-Numpad 4 - Place window on the left side of the screen in
*semi-maximised* state (it is important that the window is actually
semi-maximised, not just the same size and position as a semi-
maximised window) Pressing a second time does nothing.

Ctrl-Alt-Numpad 6 - Place window on the right side of the screen (it
is important that the window is actually semi-maximised, not just the
same size and position as a semi-maximised window). Pressing a second
  time does nothing."

  HOWTO:

The solution we want here are additional shortcuts to semi-maximize
windows vertically and move them to left/right half of the screen...

The best way to achieve that:

  1. Remove the changing of the standard shortcuts by
debian/patches/ubuntu-config.patch, so the original ones will work again.
  2. Add 2 quasi-duplicated shortcuts with the functions to semi-maximize
windows vertically and move them to left/right half of the screen to Grid and
make those functions use "Ctrl + Super + Cursor Left or Right" on Ubuntu.
