Ubuntu 18.04 LTS bluetooth left discoverable

Status in indicator-bluetooth package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, when Bluetooth is on, the computer stays
discoverable which opens up unnecessary vulnerability surface. There
should be a separate UI switch for discoverability with auto timeout.
Leaving bluetooth on (using a Bluetooth mouse) should not leave the
  computer always discoverable.

Current behavior does not match documentation
  https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/bluetooth-
visibility.html.en, even without Bluetooth panel open, the computer is
  still discoverable.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1770146] Re: [MIR] libayatana-appindicator

2018-08-14 Thread Mike Gabriel
A ping from one of the upstream maintainers of Ayatana Indicators.

For Debian I maintain this wiki page that documents the transition
status. There is still a lot of work ahead in Debian:

https://wiki.debian.org/Ayatana/IndicatorsTransition

Anyone chiming in (ideally on the Debian side) is highly welcome. Let's
reduce the Debian/Ubuntu delta...

Title:
  [MIR] libayatana-appindicator

Status in libayatana-appindicator package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  [Availability]
  * Everywhere

  [Rationale]
  * Appindicator is dead, we should move it to universe and switch to the
"better" and "supported" ayatana version
  [Security]
  * No security bugs found

  [Quality assurance]
  * Strongly maintained in Debian, lots of packages in main used to have deltas
to drop and switch to appindicator, I think we will save a lot of work by just
syncing stuff and not maintaining appindicator anymore (at least moving it to
universe)
  [Dependencies]
  * All deps in main
  [Standards compliance]
  * New compat level
  * Maintained in sync with Debian
  * It builds a python2 bind, maybe we can just not MIR all binaries there
  [Maintenance]
  * Debian maintains it, and is doing a port to ayatana of all packages.

  [Background information]
  * I think we can also just MIR libayatana-appindicator3-1

  reverse-depends -c main src:libappindicator -r cosmic
  Reverse-Depends
  ===
  * network-manager-gnome (for libappindicator3-1)
  * remmina   (for libappindicator3-1)
  * transmission-gtk  (for libappindicator3-1)

all the three packages are now using ayatana in -proposed pocket

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1459557] Re: partitions blacklisted in launcher keep coming back

2015-06-01 Thread Mike Cornelison
I characterized this problem more clearly. The culprit is the program
gnome-disk-utility. If standby time or APM is set to ON, all partitions
of the drive are added to the launcher. If they are removed with "unlock
from launcher" they come back with the next reboot. If the standby time
and APM are set to OFF, normal launcher behavior returns. This started
happening in May 2015. In my case the disk is /dev/sdb which contains
various rarely used Linux partitions (old versions of Ubuntu, Fedora,
Suse, Mint) and is normally not spinning (APM set for spin-down).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1438370] [NEW] indicator-datetime wrong day highlighted when you change month/year

2015-03-30 Thread Mike Pap
Public bug reported:

indicator-datetime 13.10.0+14.04.20140415.3-0ubuntu1, Ubuntu 14.04.2
LTS.

If you change the month or year while the datetime indicator is open,
the highlighted date doesn't move with the current month, but instead
keeps still on the same number as it was before, regardless of the month
and/or year selected, giving the user a false indication of the current
date. The highlighted date should always be on the current date, unless
the user selects a specific date to add an event or to open evolution by
double-clicking.

What you expected to happen:
1. Click on date-time indicator. (Current month and year is shown with the
current date highlighted.)
2. Change the month or year with the arrows.
3. If current date is not visible do not highlight any date.
4. If the current date is visible (on previous or next month) highlight the
current date on the current month.

What happened instead:
1. Click on date-time indicator. (Current month and year is shown with the
current date highlighted.)
2. Change the month or year with the arrows.
3. The highlight remains on the same number as the current date on every month
and/or year.

Ubuntu 14.04, fully up to date, Unity Version:

The Unity launcher in my setup is not hidden. It is always visible.

The current behavior of the urgent animation goes like this:

  1) An application needs attention (such as an instant message through Empathy

  2) Icon wiggles for about one second
  3) Once the wiggle is over, the icon remains highlighted

The problem is with step 2. The icon never reinitializes any sort of

very widescreen monitors and their field of vision is in an entirely
different place altogether. There really should be some sort of
repeated motion that takes place to grab the users attention, thereby
signifying that an application needs attention.

A few possible solutions would be:

  A) Let the icon wiggle indefinitely until the user clicks on it. This
is a bit obnoxious, because you have to consider the situations where
a user might notice it, but might be too deep in a specific project to
address it right away. This would stand as a potential distraction
and/or annoyance, though it *would* eliminate the chances of the
  notification going missed.

  B) To allow the user to adjust the time frame in which the wiggle
animation takes place. That way instead of one second, perhaps the
user might want it to last 10 seconds, or 30 seconds, etc. There are
times where I am engaging in an active conversation but switching to
another application frequently. At times, I miss a message altogether
despite the fact I'm looking at the screen. This is entirely due to
the short time frame in which the urgent animation is moving. The
length of time in which it moves is, more times than not, simply not
long enough to be noticed. If the one second span could be adjusted,
and say I have it set to 5 seconds, or 10 seconds, surely I would
  notice it.

  C) The most optimum solution in my opinion is to make the urgent
animation continually come up over a specified span of time. Example,
I receive a notification from Empathy, but I miss it. It wiggles and
shortly thereafter stops wiggling, thereby just sitting idle but with
the icon highlighted. A short time later, perhaps 30 seconds later, it
wiggles again, and continues onward in 30 second intervals
indefinitely until the user gives attention to the application
  requesting it.

Option C would circumvent a potential "annoyance" factor of option A,
and it would work around the fact that option B) would require another
thing to change in the settings menu. All in all, there *really*
should be a way for a user to more easily see that an application
needs attention. A simple one second wiggle is not enough. A
background highlight is not enough as it does not move to be noticed.
You only notice a background highlight if you specifically look at the
icon, whereas a motion-based notification (wiggle, etc) actually
'grabs' your attention to be noticed.

Thank you for your time, consideration, and hard work. If I can be of
any further assistance please let me know. Thank you again!

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1343552] Re: Applications filter is not selected by default

2014-09-14 Thread Mike
At first I thought that's because of Audacity lens. I uninstalled it, but the

I'm wondering if there's a setting file that I could change/delete that will
restore the default filtering.

These errors (PyCapsule errors) can be fixed by re-running the Cython

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: unity

Click the application lense to open the application dash. It is kind
of messy to visually grasp and browse, and finding something is
challenging (it looks almost like a memory game). I know there is also
the search bar to find things, but that's not the problem.

Our eyes cannot grasp too many icons on a row (that's why for example,
newspapers and articles are often in skinny columns, so that are
easier to read). At least on my laptop, I see six icons on each row
which is a lot to handle if you're browsing for something: I believe
that having 4, maybe bigger, icons would be much easier on the eyes.
This obviously has its caveats: (a) we would have less suggestions
upon opening the app dash when the 3 sections are still collapsed; and
  (b) we would need more columns in general.

For (a) we could have a longer (and skinnier) dash so that we would
have 2 rows (4x4 icons) for the "Most frequently used" and "Installed"
sections; for the "Available for download" section, one row should be
enough. Notice that this has also the visual benefit that if we have
the dash going down to the bottom, it would be in perfect harmony with
  the launcher.

For (b) we should still have this longer dash, and in addition
something like pages rather than scrolling up & down (to have visual
stability). Also, when expanding a section, say "Installed Apps", its
icons could take the whole dash space (i.e. only one section can be
expanded each time, and we could have some button to go back to the
overview): now after expanding a section, rather than scrolling, we
could have a couple arrows to move to the next and previous page. In
this way, the rows are visually still but the content changes, which
is much (much!) comfortable for the eyes (also given this stability,
we would remember where things are more easily).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1326866] Re: No menu bar !

2014-06-06 Thread Mike Miller
You're right, the height is correct but the position of the window is
underneath the Unity bar. This is almost certainly a bug in Unity, not
in Octave, since Octave is setting the right height, and I have not seen
this happen in other desktop environments.

This may be the same as bug #1166132. Reassigning to unity.

Not sure where to report this, but there are some odd "Ubuntu issues

recent app I've tried that has this issue, but changed the package to
  "I don't know" in the web bug-interface.

1 - Applications often start with no menu/title bar. They are not
maximized. Sometimes changing the size of the window by dragging a
window edge will give me a title bar.

2 - Even when a title bar is visible, it may only show the title and
the menus won't open. I click around like mad and eventually the menu
may start working. Its very intermittent.

3 - Tear-off menus never work. This has been reported seperately for
Gimp. When the menus are torn off, they don't work anymore. Gvim
used to have tear-off menus, but I can't find out where to turn them
on! Gnome-tweak tool (and other gnome apps have a transparent
background making them very tough to use).

Sorry these are all posted in one spot, but I think they are related.
If I'm wrong - I'll try posting them seperately, but I'm pretty sure
I'm not the only one having these problems!

Title:
No Autohide Launcher Bar Mouse Reveal on Secondary Monitor

Status in Unity:
  Confirmed
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since several updates performed on 1/8/2014, I am no longer able to
reveal the launcher bar on my secondary (right) display with the mouse
auto-reveal function. Under display settings, both monitors are set
to display a launcher bar. Auto reveal works fine with the mouse on
the primary (left) monitor. The sticky edge works fine with the
secondary (right) monitor, but no auto reveal for the launcher bar. I
can bring up the secondary (right) monitor launcher bar with the super
  key and alt+f1.

So far I've reverted to Nvidia 3.04 drivers from 3.19 by purging from
terminal and re-installing to no avail, and now back to 3.19 and it's
  still not working.

  Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS
  32-bit
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
  Nvidia GT630 PCIe
  2GB RAM

Any outputs you'd like from me, please let me know.

Re: [Dx-packages] [Bug 1073114] Online Smart Scopes Do Not Respect User Privacy

2014-04-01 Thread mike davis
I do not agree, this bug has not been solved and should remain open.. as titled
the “bug” is “online smart scopes do not respect user privacy”
and from what i can tell; the new setup still does not respect user privacy..
keystrokes typed in search are still sent to canonical services (correct me if
i’m wrong).
and the scopes scope is still opt-out.. and does not appear to address the
EFF’s concerns at all..

I am writing on behalf of a customer/friend who I've wiped Windows 7 in
yet another ugly mess that I come across often (Windows in general), backed up
user files' and reinstalled with “13.10, Saucy Salamander”. I myself run
Gentoo, but it's not for everybody. I will get straight to the point. He wants
his Locomotive Train Simulation Games to work. I do not like the idea of him
running Windows software under Linux (WINE), and know that can be buggy as well
working half-*** or not at all.

So what I did is, I took a Linux Live DVD (USB actually) and ran
Gparted, resized the only partition (1 Primary, no swap needed with the
amount of ram), and made the free space before the Ext4 Partition for
Linux, and placed an NTFS Partition that would be /dev/sda1. I am doing
everything possible to prevent the Windows installer from doing anything
to wipe out Linux.

I then went to installing Windows 7. Upon reaching the
partitioner, it recognized the newly created NTFS Partition, and I had
it install there. Yes, knowingly, it would wipe out the MBR of Grub2
with it's own BS that I later fixed using some Gentoo skills (refer to
the Gentoo Handbook if interested).

Skip ahead...

Windows 7 and Linux are now both dual booting just fine with Grub2.
However, a problem exists with Wifi working under Linux. I have a couple
of options:

1. Solve the problem myself, reconfigure make menuconfig, patch if necessary,
etc. etc., or
2. Make a bug report, so that when updates come in through Ubuntu Repositories,
the issue is fixed and remains fixed not only for this customer, but all others
that run into the problem and would run into the problem if a bug fix had not
been made.

Problem in More Detail:

Boot Linux to GUI desktop. Automatic connecting to the WPA2 Wireless Network by
Network Manager does not happen. Then go into Network Manager's Settings and
find out

Airplane mode is enabled. It will toggle off. Wireless is toggled off,
and refuses to toggle on.

Temporary workaround that gets around the issue:

Suspend the computer in Linux (did so through the GUI), and wake it from
Suspend. Now everything works and behaves as expected, but the problem
will persist after a reboot.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 951929] Re: Unity launcher and Alt-Tab switcher missing entry for gnome-terminal

2014-02-02 Thread Mike-coder
On 13.10 ... still present. Seems to mostly affect gnome-terminal; but
maybe that's what I have running most(?) Tends to happen when I have two
terminal sessions running. Close the newer one. The old one is still
running (shows with filled triangle on launcher) but can't switch to it
with alt-tab nor go to it by clicking icon in launcher. Right-click in
launcher does not list it either. Restarting Unity restores it to the
list.

Unity launcher and Alt-Tab switcher missing entry for gnome-terminal

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

edit: Updated title, its affecting more than gnome-terminal

  1) Description: Ubuntu precise (development branch)
  Release: 12.04

  2) unity:
    Installed: 5.4.0-0ubuntu2

  3) Gnome-Terminal to show in list of programs to alt+tab to.

  4) Alt+Tab consistently fails to show gnome-terminal for 'a while' (I
hate to be vague, I can't figure out what suddenly triggers it to
appear in the box). See attached photograph of it occurring.

I can make it happen at will:

  1) Cold boot into Ubuntu.
  2) Open gnome-terminal.
  3) Open Firefox.
  4) Press alt+tab. alt+tab window only shows Desktop and Firefox.

In attached screenshot, note that gnome-terminal has a highlighted
background and arrow, indicating an instance of it running, as is
  Firefox.

When I started my system, I was missing the clock applet from the top
panel. I found instructions on the forums to run "unity --replace"

The first time I ran it from my terminal, the screen flickered

When I hit Ctrl+C on the terminal to try and get it back, then the

keyboard input. I had to hard reboot.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1268167] Re: No Autohide Launcher Bar Mouse Reveal on Secondary Monitor

2014-01-21 Thread Mike
I can confirm the same behaviour. The "super" key method works fine.
My launcher is set to reveal when the mouse goes to the top left corner
but it does not behave that way on the external monitor configured to
the right of the laptop monitor.

The behaviour appears to be top left of the entire display area rather
than "per monitor": switching the external monitor to be left of the
laptop monitor allows the launcher to reveal as expected on the external
monitor but not on the laptop monitor.

WM_CLASS for the launcher is "not found" as shown by "xprop WM_CLASS"
and clicking on the launcher bar; presuming "unity" package.

No Autohide Launcher Bar Mouse Reveal on Secondary Monitor

Status in Unity:
  New
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since several updates performed on 1/8/2014, I am no longer able to
reveal the launcher bar on my secondary (right) display with the mouse
auto-reveal function. Under display settings, both monitors are set
to display a launcher bar. Auto reveal works fine with the mouse on
the primary (left) monitor. The sticky edge works fine with the
secondary (right) monitor, but no auto reveal for the launcher bar. I
can bring up the secondary (right) monitor launcher bar with the super
  key and alt+f1.

So far I've reverted to Nvidia 3.04 drivers from 3.19 by purging from
terminal and re-installing to no avail, and now back to 3.19 and it's
  still not working.

  Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS
  32-bit
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
  Nvidia GT630 PCIe
  2GB RAM

Any outputs you'd like from me, please let me know.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1059374] Re: Using Adwaita, many widgets are drawn with a solid black background

Hi guys, any update on this? I still have this issue in 13.10.

Bug description:
When I use the Adwaita theme, some widgets end up being drawn with a
black background after particular interactions. Here are two examples:

If I open gedit, by default I see a new black document. The notebook
widget is visible, and rendered correctly. As soon as I open another
document (no matter if I close the existing one first), the entire
widget starts being drawn with a black background.

If I open System Settings, then click the (Ubuntu) Online Accounts
panel, the box with the "Remove account" button has a solid black
background. If, instead, I open Online Accounts directly from its
launcher (run gnome-control-center credentials), everything is
rendered correctly: there are no solid black backgrounds until I click
"All Settings" and select the Online Accounts panel again.

This has been happening consistently on two very different machines,
both updated to Quantal from 12.04 using the upgrade tool.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1247574] [NEW] There is no remote graphical login tool

2013-11-03 Thread Mike
Public bug reported:

Hello,
I tried to find a working solution for remote graphical login to Ubuntu 13.10.
Found nothing working.
For me, this kind of features won't let us fix the bug #1.
While there are options for remote connection to the active session, remote
login is something hard to establish.

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Dx-packages] [Bug 987060] Re: massive memory leak in unity-panel-service and hud-service when invoking the hud on Firefox profiles with large amounts of bookmarks

2013-10-22 Thread Mike
I don't know why but on 13.10 unity-panel-service is buggy and leaks
much RAM in some cases. Sometimes I cant even shut down my computer and
need to restart this service

Bug description:
unity-panel-service and hud-service quickly racks up memory and CPU
usage until I kill it when invoking the HUD on Firefox. It's taking
anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour, but it sometimes makes
  the system completely unusable.

  1. run Firefox 12.0 in the foreground
  2. hit Alt to bring up HUD
  3. type any text
  4. select one proposal from HUD
  5. wait for unity-panel-service and hud-service to fill up the remaining RAM
and swap space.

This is due to a high number of bookmarks in a user profile
  (hundreds).
