  indicator-datetime uses excessive memory

Status in Canonical System Image:

Status in indicator-datetime package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  On my Aquaris 4.5, OTA-13, indicator-datetime
15.10+15.04.20160820.1-0ubuntu1, it uses too much RSS. A typical RSS
is 315892, almost three times as much as unity8.

I believe this is an OTA regression. I'm not sure if it regressed from
  OTA-11 or OTA-12.

Just now, I got caught in an oom killer loop with constant killing of
unity8-dash because of this, making my phone unusable. I had to kill
indicator-datetime manually. It then restarted automatically and now
uses 80456 RSS only. I see bug 1633319 exists complaining about a
memory leak. It's not exactly the same version since mine is
  15.10+15.04.20160820.1-0ubuntu1 and that one is
15.10+16.10.20160820.1-0ubuntu1. But perhaps the upstream versions are
the same or something? Perhaps the two are dupes, but I'll let someone
  more familiar make that determination.

I have only a handful of alarms (perhaps five on average; rarely more)
but I do have my Google calendar syncing with perhaps hundreds of
events. However, there's no reason that this should cause indicator-
datetime to use more RSS; it shouldn't be keeping these in memory.

I am currently in Spain, and unity-control-center datetime is
configurd to automatically update the timezone based on IP
  geolocation.

This does not work (and honestly hasn't worked for quite some time,
  well before 16.04).

In one screenshot, you can see that my timezone is set as New York,
and the "Automatically from the Internet" button is selected for "Set
  the time".

In the other screenshot, you can clearly see that my geolocation shows
that I am in Spain, but the time has NOT updated to reflect that I'm
  on a different European timezone.

This has never worked in Ubuntu that I can recall, I always have to
  manually change the location.

  Expected Behaviour:

Timezone is updated automatically whenever I am connected to the internet in
a different timezone.

  Tolerance for diagonal mouse movement

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
If you click an indicator icon, then attempt to move the mouse from
the icon to the menu, it could momentarily hover a neighboring
indicator icon if the movement follows a diagonal path.

For example (see attached image), if the messaging icon is to the left
of the sound icon, and the user clicks the sound icon, then moves the
mouse diagonally to reach the volume slider, the mouse will briefly
  pass over the messaging icon.

  Current behavior:

The sound menu closes and the messaging menu opens (this is very
  frustrating).

  Desired behavior:

Keep the sound menu open and ignore the messaging menu.

If you're not convinced that this is important, check out the normal
application menu: if you open a submenu, then move the mouse
diagonally, the open menu doesn't change. Contrast with the behavior
of the classic start menu in old versions of windows (e.g. windows xp)
where diagonal mouse movement changes the active submenu.

the whole bar of indicators does jiggle as before

  The docs say:

  gchar*"label-guide"read/write

An optional string to provide guidance to the panel on how big the
#AppIndicator:label string could get. If this is set correctly then
the panel should never 'jiggle' as the string adjusts through out the
range of options. For instance, if you were providing a percentage
like "54% thrust" in #AppIndicator:label you'd want to set this string
to "100% thrust" to ensure space when Scotty can get you enough power.

Removing indicator-application. Problem here is that nm-applet is

[Dx-packages] [Bug 779782] Re: Mouse release does not activate playback control buttons

2017-01-12 Thread Rodney Dawes
Moving to ido where the widget is implemented. The indicator itself
doesn't know anything about mouse button press state, menu position or
such, as it doesn't render the widgets. That's done on the unity side.

** Package changed: indicator-sound (Ubuntu) => ido (Ubuntu)

  indicator-sound 12.10.2+14.04.20140401-0ubuntu1, Ubuntu 14.04

In maverick's sound menu, it was possible to activate the banshee or
rhythmbox play/pause, back, and forward controls by pressing the mouse
on the indicator applet sound icon, dragging to the chosen control
with the mouse button held down, and releasing the mouse button. It
looks like the sound menu spec at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoundMenu is
ambiguous as to whether this should activate the controls, but all
other menu items in the indicator applet can be activated in this way
(as an example, the mute option in the sound menu). The fact that this
no longer works for the playback control buttons seems like a bug.

To be clear, click/release on the sound menu icon followed by
click/release on the playback buttons works perfectly well. The
inconsistency is in the playback buttons being more picky than other
menu items, in that they can't be triggered by just a mouse release.

  : "Conversely, clicking
on a different menu item (or any menu title), moving to a button, and
  releasing, should activate that button."

That has various benefits, counting the two more important:
  1. Only need to supply one theme between Ambiance/Radiance whatever.
  2. It's way easier to deal with situations like when the unity dash is
opened, and icons should turn white: you just need to set the white color and
it'll be recolored.

UT does not discover bluetooth smart (BLE) devices

Status in indicator-bluetooth package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Same as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-system-
settings/+bug/1576986 but I thought I'd also post it here.

I am actually typing this on a Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard
  connected to my M10 tablet.

  Device: Bq Aquaris M10
  OS: OTA-10.1

Generally bluetooth devices that are not version 4 or bluetooth smart
(BLE) seem to work and pair fine with the Aquaris E4.5 and the M10.
However, when it comes to BLE/version 4, things obviously get too
complicated for the system bluetooth settings because it doesn't even
  manage to discover these devices.

OTA-10.1 uses Bluez version 5.37, which is perfectly capable of
discovering and pairing with BLE devices, but in Ubuntu Touch it
requires the use of "bluetoothctl" in the terminal. I will describe
  the steps needed below:

  phablet@ubuntu-phablet:-$ bluetoothctl
  [bluetooth]# scan on

wait for device to show up in list, typically:
  [NEW] Device 01:02:FF:A8:BB:00 DeviceName

  [bluetooth]# discoverable on
  Changing discoverable on succeeded
  [bluetooth]# agent on
  Agent registered
  [bluetooth]# default-agent
  Default agent request successful
  [bluetooth]# pairable on
  Changing pairable on succeeded

Now tell bluetoothctl to pair the device
  [bluetooth]# pair 01:02:FF:A8:BB:00
  Attempting to pair with 01:02:FF:A8:BB:00

If pairing with MS Universal Foldable Keyboard, you will probably see
a 6-digit code, punch that code on the keyboard and hit return.

  [CHG] Device 01:02:FF:A8:BB:00 Connected: yes
  [agent] Passkey: 123456

You should be good to go.

However, the MS Foldable Keyboard does not show up in system bluetooth
settings (see attached screenshot) and getting the M10 to recognize
that the Keyboard is turned off seems to require a reboot (and
possibly also bluetooth turned off). Otherwise, the onscreen keyboard
  doesn't show up.

if the icon would turn blue when there is actual traffic happening.
This is something I've been used to from previous phones and it helps
greatly to identify the state of the connection. For instance, the
Music player playing music to a Bluetooth headset would be immediately
visible when you've put the headset away already and forgot to stop
  the music player.

Also, it causes bug reports of failed connections to be more detailed
as this gives details to the developer whether the connection failed
when establishing the ACL link or if something failed after a profile
  has been connected already.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1606463] Re: Battery and Bluetooth indicators visible when the hardware is not present

2017-01-11 Thread Rodney Dawes
The indicators *do* hide themselves (they set the visibility of their
root item to false). This works fine in unity7, and in unity8 it only
works half-way.

In unity8, when an indicator sets its root item visibility to false, the
icon disappears from the top panel in general, but when the drop-down
for indicators is opened, the indicator is still shown anyway, and any
visible children are also shown, though they shouldn't be.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1620596] Re: [Desktop] Suspend takes around 10 secs to apply in unity8

2017-01-11 Thread Rodney Dawes
Moving this to the general tracking project for now. I don't think this
has anything to do with the indicator, which simply calls the
appropriate method to initiate the suspend, when you click the menu
item, and that sounds like it's working. Not sure what in the Unity8
session would cause this to be slower there than under Unity7 though.

The preferable behaviour would be for the print indicator to appear
only when there are jobs (active or inactive) in the queue, and to to
disappear entirely from view when there are no print jobs in the queue
(so as to save panel real estate). I'd further suggest that the
indicator should be dimmed (or else suitably coloured) when only
inactive jobs remain within the queue.

The indicators aren't really designed to be used in osx-style docks like

be considered a bug in the indicator itself.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1482551] Re: "External" app setting -> System Settings -> Back doesn't return to "External" app

2016-12-05 Thread Rodney Dawes
OK. I'm going to remove the indicators from this as it really doesn't
make sense there. When you open a settings panel or app from the
indicators, the indicator itself is closed. It would be very weird if
when that app was closed, the indicator automatically opened back up
again.

An appropriate action in system-settings though when a panel is opened
via the URL directly, rather than from within the app itself, is to just
exit when the user presses the back button, assuming the system-settings
app was not already running (which complicates things).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1646517] Re: In unity8-session snap on Core 16, no battery icon is shown

2016-12-05 Thread Rodney Dawes
I think we need to do a bit more here to really make this right. The
reason the indicator isn't showing in the top panel normally in this
case, is because your VM doesn't have a battery. So not showing a
battery icon on a system without a battery, is totally expected.

However, it is still being run, and due to the indicators drop-down
panel design of Unity 8, normally accessible, despite it not being
particularly useful for certain systems.

Even more fun is that the "Battery" panel in System Settings is already
being hidden, but clicking on "Battery settings..." in the indicator
will open it anyway.

We need some way to hide certain indicators from the drop-down as well
as from the panel.

snap?). But I bet that the indicator is giving back an absolute path
  that points outside the snap.

2016-12-05 Thread Rodney Dawes
Just tried this in my VM and it is opening very quickly. I don't see
anything in the attached syslog that would indicate this is an issue
with the indicator. The logs that would be helpful should be under
~/.cache/upstart/ here. There should be a log for the system-settings
app itself, and any logging from the indicator should I think be in its
own log as well, or maybe in unity8-dash.log there.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1638708] Re: Hardcoded paths in desktop files need to be processed need $SNAP prefixing

Yeah, the indicators all ship upstart jobs, systemd units, and autostart
.desktop files.

There are some cases where indicators need fixed in other ways to deal
with similarly related issues (parsing other .desktop files), but
generally the data/*.desktop.in files aren't a problem here, from what I
can see.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1638708] Re: Hardcoded paths in desktop files need to be processed need $SNAP prefixing

2016-12-02 Thread Rodney Dawes
I'm not sure how much of this is valid. Most of these are .desktop files
that are installed in the XDG autostart directory, and thus only used in
environments which use that, of which Unity8 is not one, especially so
in its snap form.

I suppose this also begs the question of whether Unity 8 should
implement the XDG autostart spec?

Bug description:
I'm seeing rightly on forums and generally the Internet that 100scopes
previews are slow, combined with the fact that we now have the left
click showing the preview by default frustrate a lot of users.

On my beefy machine (i7, 8G of rams), the preview for an application
takes 3/4s to show, you can't do anything meanwhile as there is no
button to launch the application (because you didn't double click,
just left click and thought "argh, I should have double click").

Because of this, we are making the 1st landing of 100 scopes
experience bad and we should fix it (at least, in that applicatoin
lens) by either preloading the software-center-dbus (/usr/share
/software-center/software-center-dbus) daemon (we can't have it always
running as it's taking over 100MB of memory) when hovering an app lens
result, or when it's the first result (so can be directly triggered by
  pressing [Enter])

[Dx-packages] [Bug 702452] Re: [launcher] Wine applications are wrongly matched

2014-12-02 Thread Rodney Dawes
This problem is made much worse when one needs to use the "[] Emulate a
virtual desktop" option in wine to make an application work;
particularly when that application works using multiple different .exe
files, and the setting must be enabled globally.

Program Loader" instead of the proper application name.
It can't be favorited since it will favorite the wine executable itself.
And obviously different wine apps are all grouped under the same launcher
icon.

See also bug #635223 about Wine applications not showing up in the
  dash.

-

A way to fix this is to make all the Wine generated .desktop file to
include a StartupWMClass value that matches the instance name of the
related program (generally the .exe file name to be executed).

So for example, a "Mozilla Firefox.desktop" file can be easily fixed adding
this parameter:
   StartupWMClass=firefox.exe

Wine should try to add this information at file generation time.

Where is the rationale for this?

Can we please have bugs filed where they state a problem, and not a
description of a task the reporter expects developers to do? And if the
problem is related to design, please provide the appropriate links to
rationale of why the design is changed, so that the developers can
understand things better.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1265630] [NEW] unity-webapps-service Depends on webbrowser-app rather than Recommends

2014-01-02 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

The unity-webapps-service package has a hard Depends on webbrowser-app,
rather than a depends on webbrowser, or an OR depends on firefox |
chromium-browser | webbrowser-app. This results in the following
situation:

apt-get remove --purge webbrowser-app
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  autopilot-desktop* bamfdaemon* libunity-webapps0*
  lightdm-remote-session-uccsconfigure* unity* unity-webapps-service*
  webbrowser-app*
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 7 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
After this operation, 7,871 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

A reasonable solution would be to change this dependency to be
"webbrowser" (the virtual package provided by many web browser
packages), and add that Provides to webbrowser-app as well. Another
option would be to introduce a new virtual package "webapps-browser"
which is added to the Provides of firefox, chromium-browser, and
webbrowser-app (and any other browsers that can be used for webapps).
And yet another option is to simply use an OR depends instead, so that
any of the supported browsers may satisfy the dependency.

Title:
unity-webapps-service Depends on webbrowser-app rather than Recommends

Status in “libunity-webapps” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The unity-webapps-service package has a hard Depends on webbrowser-
app, rather than a depends on webbrowser, or an OR depends on firefox
  | chromium-browser | webbrowser-app. This results in the following
  situation:

  apt-get remove --purge webbrowser-app
  Reading package lists... Done
  Building dependency tree
  Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
autopilot-desktop* bamfdaemon* libunity-webapps0*
lightdm-remote-session-uccsconfigure* unity* unity-webapps-service*
webbrowser-app*
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 7 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
After this operation, 7,871 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

A reasonable solution would be to change this dependency to be
"webbrowser" (the virtual package provided by many web browser
packages), and add that Provides to webbrowser-app as well. Another
option would be to introduce a new virtual package "webapps-browser"
which is added to the Provides of firefox, chromium-browser, and
webbrowser-app (and any other browsers that can be used for webapps).
And yet another option is to simply use an OR depends instead, so that
any of the supported browsers may satisfy the dependency.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1265628] [NEW] libunity-webapps0 Depends on unity-webapps-service instead of Recommends

2014-01-02 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

The libunity-webapps0 package is declaring a hard Depends on unity-
webapps-service, though the latter is not actually required by the
library. For someone who does not need or want any webapps, it is
feasible that they would want to uninstall this service, and not have it
waste CPU and memory.

A reasonable solution would be to move the necessary pieces of that
package (the crashdb conf file for apport, and the gsettings schemas) to
a unity-webapps-common package which the library can hard Depends on,
and have unity-webapps-service be a Recommends instead.

I notice something which could be improve for Oneric .

Once we have installed an application and choosed not to create an
entry to the launcher, it would be better for us , users, to have an
entry for most recently installed applications. We need it beacause
we always don't remember good about the difficult name of the app we
installed. An entry forthe recently installed app will be a welcome.

  --
  Desired Solution:

As soon as an application gets completely installed, the software
center should log a Zeitgeist event for that application so that it
will be moved on top of 'Recently Used' category. That category header
excludes applications that are currently in the Launcher, so recently
installed applications *should not* show up underneath this category
header by default (And this won't happen because applications are now
automatically pinned to the Launcher after install).

It's still to define whether a zeitgeist event should be fired also
when a user unpins the app from the Launcher.

Bug description:
As discussed in bug #739469 "Dash search unavoidably returns offensive
results" the Apps Available for Downloads section can contain apps
that may offend different demographics. Apps can be offensive because
they are explicit such as PornView or because of religious reasons or
  other.

It's probably an impossible task to come up with something that is
100% safe all of the time, but we should at least reduce the risk of
embarrassing moments to an absolute minimum.

One solution could be to have the popcon ranking from the Software
center index influence the weight of the document.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1180860] Re: Session (gear) indicator not changing to red when restart required

2013-10-11 Thread Rodney Dawes
This wasn't necessarily about security updates, but any update that
requires a restart. For example, all kernel updates require a restart,
even if they are not security updates. Most security updates don't
require a full restart of the system, as they only require individual
services to be restarted.

Really, most times when a user updates, the installation of the updates
will require at least a log out/in of the user's session, as core
components of the session or libraries they use, are very often included
in the list of updated packages.

There probably isn't a good way to distinguish between session restart,
and system restart, in these cases though, so a system restart being
recommended would take care of both cases.

Session (gear) indicator not changing to red when restart required

Status in “indicator-session” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
I just installed a set of updates, which included the kernel. After
the updates were installed, update-manager showed me the dialog
stating that a restart was required, but the session indicator did not
change at all. It was not red, and there is not "restart required"
type of item in the menu. It used to always do this, and no longer
  does.

Also, the kernel updates were listed in update-manager as "security"
updates, but the session indicator had not turned red to indicate they
needed to be installed. I thought it was supposed to turn red and add
an "Updates required" menu item in such a situation, as well.
