Maybe this is a feature(?) of Gnome3.12. Here is another thread without

Bug description:
  I am using Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 with everything functioning so far, but
  after (?) installing evolution, the OSD does not show up anymore when
  I adjust the brightness and volume. Both functions perfectly fine, but
  the OSD is missing now.
