Assigned this issue to xubuntu-docs. Let's document the correct way to
handle the installation of the xubuntu-desktop package, and make it easy

libappindicator, so this should no longer be an issue for Xubuntu.

I've added this to the 20.04 development blueprint, so let's revisit and
discuss. If we can't solve the problem with packaging, let's document
the mini.iso installation process so others have an easier time.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1754872] Re: gnome-control-center is unusable on xubuntu-desktop, but called from Gear (About this Computer, System Settings) icon, Text Entry Settings, clock (Time & Date Settings)

2018-03-13 Thread Sean Davis
This does not affect a base install of Xubuntu, but one that is shared
with other installed sessions that pull in the GNOME Control Center and
the Date Time Indicator.

The GNOME Control Center only displays it's configuration tools inside
of a GNOME or GNOME-like environment, and will just show up blank
anywhere else.

To populate these settings, just launch the control center with the
below command.

env XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME gnome-control-center

Moving this bug to indicator-datetime since it could be made aware of
the running desktop and gnome-control-center since it seems to be an
intentional functionality of the GNOME desktop.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 694224] Re: Synchronous notifications briefly steal focus

2015-11-07 Thread Sean Dague
I'm definitely seeing this as new behavior after the 15.10 upgrade. In
15.04 this was fine for me on the destkop, now things that generate
notifications steal my focus so that things like F1 no longer get sent
to the window manager for things like show/hide of Tilda.

  Synchronous notifications briefly steal focus

Status in notify-osd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  It appears synchronous notifications (at least those for volume and
  brightness) briefly steal focus when they appear. This is quite
  problematic for games and some other applications that pause as soon
  as they lose focus. The focus stealing does not happen with normal,
  asynchronous notifications.

  Here's a quick Python program to reproduce this:

  #!/usr/bin/python
  import gtk
  import time
  def cb (wid, ev):
evtime = time.strftime ("%H:%M:%S", time.localtime())
print ("%s: Lost focus!" % evtime)
  win = gtk.Window()
  win.connect ("focus-out-event", cb)
  win.show_all()
  gtk.main()

  You could also just start playing Quadrapassel, then adjust your volume :)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1262022] Re: incorrect multi-arch related meta information.

2015-06-06 Thread Sean Brisbane
Health warning: You should not run any packages without security support
such as acroread. If you still want to, these are the steps which
worked for me

"acroread "will work without canberra-gtk-module, unity-gtk module,
murrine theme, and the overlay scrollbar you can ignore those messages
when just trying to get it to run (though, it will be nicer if these are
fixed, and the steps below do fix most of these warnings)

1)
apt-get install libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnss3-1d:i386 libnspr4-0d:i386 lib32nss-mdns
libxml2:i386 libxslt1.1:i386 libstdc++6:i386
apt-get install --reinstall gtk2-engines-murrine:i386 gtk2-engines-pixbuf:i386

2) To make many 32 bit programs work, you will also need the i386
versions of name service libraries:

It depends on the system how you do this:

aptitude search libnss | grep ^i | grep -v i386

i libnss-ldap - NSS module for using LDAP as a naming serv
i A libnss-mdns - NSS module for Multicast DNS name resoluti
i A libnss-sss - Nss library for the System Security Servic
i A libnss3 - Network Security Service libraries
i A libnss3-nssdb   - Network Security Security libraries - shar

I needed to make sure that the 32 bit versions of the above were installed
apt-get install libnss-ldap:i386 libnss-mdns:i386  libnss-sss:i386 libnss3:i386
libnss3-nssdb:i386

Finally:
from
http://mastro77.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/installing-adobe-reader-9-in-ubuntu-1404.html
You do not need to pull in any dependencies from precise, only acroread should
be installed by this next set of steps:

3)
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install acroread
sudo add-apt-repository -r "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"
sudo apt-get update

If other dependencies are required, to be safe, remove the precise repository
and install them from the trusty repository
sudo add-apt-repository -r "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"
sudo apt-get update
apt-get install [list of missing dependencies]
and go back to step 3)

  "multi-arch" package. This should (or so I've been told) be reflected
  in the meta information of the "overlay-scrollbar" package but isn't,
  which is why the former package fails to install.

  As a more competent person than I put it:

  "The overlay-scrollbar package does not come in i386 or amd64 flavors;
  it comes as an "all" flavor, which installs on all archs.

  It appears to be missing the Multi-Arch: allowed header so it won't
  satisfy an i386 package depending on it. You should file a bug report

Bug description:
  upower 0.99 needs uploading for gnome 3.12 to enter ubuntu. It drops
  the suspend/hibernate functions, as logind now does that. All major
  DEs have support for this,so nearly everything just needs a rebuild.
  This bug tracks the transition.

  A transition is required as some features were removed and the SONAME
  was changed

  All packages (and build logs) are staged in
  https://launchpad.net/~noskcaj/+archive/upower/+packages

  sugar will probably need removing. If a package only needs a rebuild,
  mark it fix commited, if something else is needed, in progress.

  cairo-dock-plug-ins: needs rebuilding
  gnome-shell - ready, just need to drop upower revert.
  gnome-control-center: WIP
  gnome-packagekit: Upower dropped from newest upstream release.
  gnome-power-manager: Fixed in newest upstream release. Merge from debian
  gnome-session: Done in ppa, needs patches from git or new upstream release
  gnome-settings-daemon: 3.12 is ready out of the box, however that also
requires gnome-desktop transition. 3.8 and also u-s-d: I have a package that is
mostly working, however had to cherry-pick quite a few patches and may just be
better to backport 3.12 power plugin. (considering g-s-d patches will be
temporary, but u-s-d not so)
  kde: works fine with systemd, suspend broken with upstart, no rebuilds needed
  cinnamon: Rebuild
  mate: all mate packages need rebuilding
  python-dbusmock: needs rebuild
  sugar: Upstream bug now filed. Unlikely to be ready in time for 14.10. We
should remove this from the archive till the next upstream release
  telepathy-mission-control-5: Debian has dropped upower support, so it's done
  wmbattery: needs rebuild
  xfce4-power-manager: Needs rebuilding
  xfce4-session: Fixed already, since we switched to logind
  xfce4-settings: Needs rebuild
  xfce4-systemload-plugin: needs rebuild

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1296313] Re: Thumbnails for music not generated when searching from music lens

2014-03-24 Thread Sean Rodriguez
** Description changed:

  I've been testing rhythmbox and queueing albums via the music lens and
  it looks like thumbnails are only incorporated into search results after
  they have been played in rhythmbox and the thumbnail is generated. Is
  there a way these thumbnails can be generated on the fly when they don't
  exist?

  Thoughts on expected behavior:

  Now granted I'm not asking for an online cover fetching service, I'd
  leave that the used music player if someone wants it. I feel like the
  thumbnails that rhythmbox is capable of generating would nice to call
  from within the lens. I spent a bit of time cleaning up the album art
  for my music so I'd rather not have something clobber my hard work, just
  use what can already be found ;)
+
+ Additional details:
+
+ I'm testing out a music collection that consists of opus files with
+ embedded album art if that is relevant.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-10-22 Thread Sean
jefferyto's workaround in #13 works on my Xubuntu system. Hibernate is
avaible from the Session Menu without needing to kill indicator-session-
service.

Hibernation is also availbale in the lightdm login screen ON FIRST BOOT
only. If I return to the lighdm login screen when I log out of my
session so that there are no active users then hibernate is not listed
in the lightdm menu.

Bug description:
  I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was
  enabled and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I
  followed the instructions on how to reenable hibernate
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but
  the option is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk
  works.

  File exists with proper content and permissions:
  $ sudo ls -l
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Sep 29 18:52
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

  $ sudo cat

  [Re-enable hibernate by default]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

  Solution found by Jeffery To (jefferyto) in comment #13 to enable
  hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  [Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  Then reboot and run 'killall indicator-session-service' in terminal
  from your session. For background see #13.

  However this is not persistent across reboots.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 783228] Re: Run dialog doesn't use $HOME as the pwd by default when specifying files/directories

2013-09-17 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Actually I just gave this a try running 13.04 and noticed the following:
With Alt+F2 I can type in a path, and if I hit enter at a folder, Nautilus
opens to that folder. If I enter the full path to a file and hit enter, nothing
happens - I have to click on a file.

However, this is probably a non-issue since the expected behaviour occurs if I
use the Unity dash (Super key) instead of Alt-F2.
So I'd say it's running fine: you can open folders with Alt-F2 if you want, but
documents are accessed from the dash, which by my understanding is how things
are supposed to work in Unity anyway.
