This will likely be my last contribution post. I am no longer giving unity a try. Even if parts of it weren't acting buggy on my setup, the very premise of UI evolution is to remove clicks and mouse strokes. Some of Unity does that other parts like the global menu adds extra clicks and mouse strokes. I've even searched on google for any official statement regarding the philosophy behind the global menu and have come up empty handed. if anyone has a link to such a document, I would enjoy reading it. Technical update: Last week my laptop started working half-and-half. on the laptop screen the global menu hides from me and on my extra monitor connected to the back of my laptop via a VGA port the global menu works just fine. One system, 2 displays, and 2 different unity global menu behaviors. I have installed the classic gnome in order to improve my productivity since this setup is a work setup not just a toy to waste time on. Resolution: For anyone that stumbles on this post and doesn't know how to get rid of the Unity monster, here is the command to install the gnome fall back session which looks like the classic gnome. $ sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback You then simply select this as your login session when you login into ubuntu to take advantage. I hope they will get rid of some of the bad Ideas and release a retry version of Unity! Update: Both of my systems are now working as designed. the hiding global menu symptom is gone. both of these systems have the unattended-upgrades package installing security updates without my attention, but other then that, I have not knowingly made any changes to either of these systems which might explain the improvement. Hello JoLiSh, thanks for the reply. Also, thanks for the update on your status. 13.04 as a possible explanation is disheartening. I upgraded to 13.04 a month ago and had a great deal of trouble so I fell back to the LTS 12.04. this time around I was determined to give Unity a fair shake so I haven't yet installed gnome-classic as I did before. Just to be clear 12.04 is a fresh install on an empty partition. all of this is the reason why I'm just now finding this glitch/bug. But because I'm having this same issue on 2 machines with different setups I'm shocked that it's just you and me having this trouble! anyhow here are the 2 machines that I have Unity on right now, both with the hiding global menu problem. I'm about 1 more week from going back to gnome-classic. I've worked through all of my Unity challenges so far except this one. Any thoughts you have would be appreciated. Hi Steve, I think this won't be fixed. You're the first person to notice it as far as I can tell. It doesn't affect me anymore, but I can't tell if it's the fact that I use a different computer now or that I have upgraded to 13.04 What version of Ubuntu do you have? Menu is hidden normally, moving the cursor to the top edge makes it appear. But placing the mouse over it makes it disappear again so I can't click on any menu item. Wow, this bug report is quite old! Does this mean that there is not going to be a fix? Does the lack of interest in this ticket ultimately reflect that most are returning to gnome-classic to get away from Unity? I am trying Unity on 2 different computers and both of them have the same symptoms with the hiding global menu. aka 2 for 2. command mentioned above does also alleviate my hiding-global-menu symptoms. '$ unity –replace' but this is hardly a fix.
