[Dx4win] dx spots window

2020-03-06 Thread ON5GM
Hello everyone,
I have a small problem with dx4win. At the bottom I have the dx-spots
window. When I click on the sign, the window is gone, which is normal. But
after that I can't find it anywhere. No, it is not hidden behind other
windows. Previously with windows 7 I could find the closed window at the
bottom of the taskbar, but now with windows 10 not. I now have to close and
restart dx4win. Does it depend on the program or on windows 10?

Of course if you do that, you'll no longer be able to go click on a spot
and have your radio automatically tune to the frequency and correct mode of
the spot ( if you have your radio linked to your computer).

Go to your preferences, Packet 2 tab. Look for a box called "DX
spotting patterns". Remove (erase) this one:

f|c|d|tZ|q|

Then Save Changes and Exit.

Also, can two BandMaps be seen at the same time?

Press the INSERT key while focus is on the DX Spots window. This will
stop things from moving around.

[Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-10-11 Thread Gary Strong
I am using DX4WIN version 8.05 and use the dxspots window get info from
either a direct telnet link to a cluster or the VE7CC cluster / software
program.

I like to see spots sorted by frequency, but when I do this and I scroll to
the top of the window to grab a spot, the curser immediately goes down to
the bottom of the window showing 10 meter spots. Is there any way to limit
the spots shown to just one band, or if not how can I use the window sorted
by frequency without it jumping down to the bottom each time.

While I can easily do this in the VE7CC program, it won't change the radio
frequency by double clicking on the spot.

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-15 Thread Mel
You might consider using something other than K1TTT. It's an extremely
busy cluster, best to spread the activity around. Using telnet you will
receive each spot exactly once. With a Web server, you are receiving
them in fixed batches. If activity is low, you will receive spots
multiple times. If it gets busy... more than 25 per minute, you may miss
some. I would turn the question around... I would is ask is why use HTTP
(DXSummit)? It's a sub-optimum solution. The only reason I can think of
is if you are behind a firewall such as at work where telnet access is
restricted... but I wouldn't think that is the case for most of us. Who
gets to operate at work? ;-)

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

One disadvantage of using DX Summit with for DX4WIN spots is that frequency is
only accurate to the kHz. A spot that shows up on 14200.4 on a browser will
display as 14200.0 in the DX4WIN spot window.

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-15 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
The spots that you get from a cluster come in as a steady stream, in
essentially real-time. Most, if not all, cluster systems on the Internet
are interconnected so the old concept of connecting to one close to you
to pick up locally spotted DX doesn't apply. Some clusters do have
filtering on them so that they only display spots from a particular
country, though I don't think that the one on K1TTT does that.

I'd turn your question around and ask why you'd want to use a web-based
one with only periodic refreshes? The one possible reason would be if
you were behind a firewall that blocked access on the ports required for
use by the cluster nodes themselves. While I don't normally use the
K1TTT node I do use it as a backup for when my "primary" one goes down.
I've never found that it's missing spots so I'm not sure why you are
having issues.

I had initially suggested that you use the K1TTT node because I use that
myself (occasionally, as noted) and I know that it's well connected with
a steady feed, but you might want to pick another one and see if that
seems to work better for you. I'd just pick one off the list that seems
to be close to you. As I mentioned, most these days are very
interconnected and you should have no trouble receiving spots.

On the other hand, if you're happy with the spots from DX Summit then I
can't really think of any reason to change.

No, it's the 25 spots that refreshes. You can make any line auto refresh
by appending a | and the number of minutes.

However, you should *NOT* auto refresh large numbers of spots as this
would be an inconsiderate waste of the spot server's bandwidth.

If you want history, initially download 1000 spots then switch to the 25
spot feed.

Frankly, unless you are behind a firewall, you should use the telnet
clusters not the web server.

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-13 Thread Mark K3MSB
DX Summit will not refresh in DX4WIN, but it refreshes if I am parked on
the web site.

Been using DX Summit for years, and it works fine for me, but (for me) it
will not update in DX4WIN.

K1TTT (non skimmer setting) updates, but looking at the DX4WIN site, it's
missing a lot of stations.

How do you have your DX4WIN configured so that DX Summit updates?

DX Summit is supposed to refresh every minute, at least the latest 100
spots one does. There are others, they may not refresh.

I just tried this in both DX4WIN and the web and the new spots were
coming in as expected.

Just came back from watching a DVD; the entries in my DX Spots had a
"Time" value between 99 and 116 minutes; nothing sooner.

I was using DX Summit.

I'll try K1TTT and let you know.

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-13 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Keep-alive is only an issue if the cluster you connect to requires it.
Basically, some clusters will disconnect you if they don't see anything
from your system within a certain amount of time. If that's the case,
you'll need to have a keep-alive set, but you'd still see spots coming
in for the first few minutes until the time-out kicked in.

Which cluster are you connecting to, and do you see spots coming into
the packet window?

You might want to try something like the K1TTT-1 cluster which is tied
to a skimmer, meaning that you'll get a pretty much constant flow of
spots, especially now with the WAE CW contest in progress.

Re: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2011-08-13 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Assuming that you're seeing spots coming into the packet window (if not,
then the problem is with the cluster you're connecting to), you need to
make sure that the DX Spots window is sorting by arrival time. In that
window, right-click and select Sort then click on Arrival. (You can also
look at the window title, it should say something like "DX spots [DXCC]
sorted by Arrival".

Also, make sure that you haven't accidentally held the window, it'll say
"(HOLDING)" if it is. If it says that, press the Insert button on your
keyboard when you've got the window in focus.

Hi --

How does one get the window to refresh in real - time ?

In the packet window, I select the internet connection I want, and the
spot that shows up are all 9 minutes old.

Checking DX Summit, there are a lot of spots that are more recent than 9
minutes.

Open the preferences window ("File" menu on the main screen,
"Preferences" selection.)
Click the "Packet2" tab on the right.
Click the "No interest" field, which will pop up a "Get font color" box.
Click the "Font" button and you'll get a color selection screen. Pick
one of the standard colors, or use "Define Custom Colors" if you would
like a color that's not shown. Use "OK" to close the color selection
and font color windows, then "File/Save Changes and Exit".

are there any method to read them? I only found postings

[Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2003-02-21 Thread Erik Hyllander
Thanks to everybody answering my original question about saving spot info.
It seems that there are two opinions
1. it works without problem
2. it doesn't work but can be solved checking Save DX Spots in
Preferences/Packet1

When I compare v 5.03 and 6.02 it works OK in 5.03 without having checked
Save DX Spots.
In 6.02 I can get it work IF I check Save DX Spots. I have set update to
every 10 min and it is interesting to note that if I have spots coming up
in the window say after only two minutes after start of DX4WIN and exit ,
they are still saved and appear when reloading DX4WIN again.

So in my view there is bug here introduced with v 6.02 (or 6.01 for that
matter).

It would be fine to have Paul's opinion on this matter, please.

It almost seems that DX4Win is not saving your spot file on closing DX4Win.
Ted... Did you check and see if when the backup box is checked that spots

[Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2003-02-21 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
I just went in and unchecked the "Backup DX spots" box. And, it went
back to clearing, i.e. deleting the .PUT file, with spots still in it
when I exited DX4Win and restarted.

[Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2003-02-21 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Roger Borowski)
Mel and others, Jim-AD1C informed me that checking the "Backup DX spots" box
doesn't have anything to do with this problem and the spots should be saved,
regardless of this box being checked, when you exit DX4WIN. That wasn't
happening for me, and apparently for some others. It started working after I
checked the box, but I don't know if unchecking the box now would cause them
to stop being saved as I have reverted back to using V5.02 due to other yet
unresolved issues in V6.02. that make it more difficult to use with Kenwood
radios as well as those who have CW keying and PSK31 PTT on different COM
ports. 73, -=Rog-K9RB=-

[Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2003-02-21 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Mel, I may not have been clear about this last night.

"Backup DX Spots" is supposed to use the backup timer to write the unsaved
spots to disk at regular intervals. Just like it does for the open log. I
asked for this a while back, so that a DX4WIN crash would not delete all the
spots that were only live in memory. You would only lose any unsaved spots
since the last backup interval.

However, it seems that Paul may have broken something in the latest versions,
which cause the spots to NOT be saved to disk when you exit the program, and
"Backup DX Spots" is not enabled.

Hello!

I have the same problem with lost spots from internet.

Just found that I don?t have any dxwin.put file. Simply copied the file from

2003-02-21 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
You will note that the DX4WIN.PUT file comes and goes. It is only
there when there are spots in the DX spot window. If you exit DX4Win
without clearing the spots the .PUT file remains with spots. If you
clear the spots and don't exit DX4Win the .PUT file remains. If you
clear the spots and then exit DX4Win the file is renamed to
DX4WIN.~UP, thereby effectively deleting it. You can delete the ~UT
file and the .PUT file will be recreated the next time a spot is
placed in the DX spot window. At least that's the way it works here.
BTW, I use the DX-Telnet interface.

[Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2003-02-21 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
I installed DX4WIN in Demo mode at the office.

With "Backup DX Spots" unchecked, the spots are NOT saved. The installation
includes a default packet spot file from Paul, it reverts to the original list
of spots when I exit DX4WIN and start again.

I do not understand at home why it appears that my spots are kept. I had
turned "Backup DX Spots" off because I didn't want the PC writing to my backup
ZIP drive every 2 minutes with the last saved spots.

It seems like there may be a bug here. The spots need to be saved when you
exit DX4WIN, regardless of whether "Backup DX Spots" is checked or not. This
is certainly the way 5.03 used to work.

I will check a little more at home this weekend to see exactly what's happening
in the shack. If I've made anyone crazy, I apologize. I'll stick to callsign
to country mappings in the future! :-)

Roger, that does not do what you think. "Backup DX Spots" writes the spots
to the disk at every backup interval, just like the log is written to disk
at every backup interval. I do not have "Backup DX Spots" checked, yet when
I exit DX4WIN and restart, all my spots are still there, because DX4WIN
writes them on exit.

Check that the DX4WIN.put file isn't set read only (right click it in
explorer and check the attributes, or use the 'ATTRIB DX4WIN.PUT'
command in a DOS window.
If it's read-only, DX4WIN can't update it.

Now, I got the idea to reinstall 6.02 and found that it didn't help. In

spots added, coming from internet or local 144 MHz link, are gone after
restarting DX4WIN.

I got one answer from AD1C/Jim who has not this problem. Are there no
others but me having the problem?
Using W98SE.

[Dx4win] DX Spots window

2003-02-15 Thread Erik Hyllander
Hello everybody,
in an earlier post I said the following:

"Another observation is that all spots from internet are lost after exit
from DX4WIN. When I use my "normal" set-up to the local DC-cluster via 144
MHz spots remain."

Now the two cases are identical i.e. spots are lost when opening DX4WIN
again, v 6.02. I have the impression that it was ok in the beginning, there
are spots saved from from Feb. 9 and 10. This has nothing to do with
checking 'Leave all windows in original position' in Preferences/Screen.

I think it is of value to save earlier spots in this window to check where
a station has been operating etc.

Paul, please put it back in the next version, it works ok in v 5.03.

[Dx4win] DX Spots Window Question

2003-02-08 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Mark,

it indicates the priority of the spot.
I had a fair number of requests to do this for folks who have difficulties
distinguishing the colors
(the so called 'color challenged users')

That is a "priority listing" for the spot...based on your setup.

[Dx4win] DX Spots Window Question Answered

2003-02-08 Thread Mark
Thank you all for the answer to my question. Apparently the number in the
"P" column signifies the priority of the spot for those of us who have
problems in distinguishing the colors.

Does anyone know the significance and meaning of the first column in the DX
Spots Window? The title of the column is "P" and a single digit number
appears for each entry received from the packet cluster.

Tnx & 73,
