[Elecraft] Early Notice: Elecraft Price Increases Coming in October

2024-09-18 Thread Eric Swartz
This is an early courtesy 'heads up' for everyone:

Due to steady increases in labor costs and supplier parts costs over the
past year, we will be increasing the sales price of most of our products,
options and accessories in October.

Orders placed prior to each product's price increase date will ship at
today's pricing.

(Our sales team will not have details on the new pricing until we announce
the changes for each product in October via our web page.)

One additional note: We have been working hard at our factory here in
California to improve our order to shipping times. We are now shipping
K4s, K4Ds, KPA500s, KPA1500s, KXPA100s and KAT500s, along with their
options, within 1-10 business days after order (depending on customer order
rates).

KX2 and KH1 wait times have also rapidly decreased and we hope to be
shipping them within 1-10 business days after order in several weeks.

Stay tuned!

Eric - WA6HHQ

[Elecraft] K3 Options Last Time Buy Update (9/15/23)

2023-09-15 Thread Eric Swartz
Good news - We are now moving along smoothly on the majority of our K3
Option purchasing, assembly and testing. Here is the latest status as of
9/15/23.

*KPA3A 100W PA: * These should begin shipping in the next 2-3 weeks.
We have completed building and testing the main KPA3A PA modules and are
now kitting the mounting hardware and packaging everything for shipping.
We are also now contacting those of you with KPA3A deposit orders to
confirm your order and your K3/K3S serial number. (The S/N is important to
make sure the installation hardware and PA interface I/O board match your
radio revision.)

*KXV3B Xverter interface:* Out for PCB assembly followed by factory
testing. We expect to begin shipping in the next 5-6 weeks.

*P3TXMON:* Out for PCB assembly, followed by factory testing. We expect to
begin shipping in the next 5-6 weeks.

*KAT3A ATU:* Out for PCB assembly, followed by factory testing. We expect
to begin shipping in the next 5-6 weeks.

*KDVR3A*: Out for PCB assembly, followed by factory testing. We expect to
begin shipping in the next 5-6 weeks.

*P3SVGA:* Out for PCB assembly, followed by factory testing. We expect to
begin shipping in the next 5-6 weeks.

*K3EXREF:* Purchasing final parts and PCB fabs, then out to PCB assembly,
followed by factory testing. We hope to begin shipping in the next 6-8
weeks.

*KBPF3A:* Purchasing final parts and PCB fabs, then out to PCB assembly,
followed by factory testing. We hope to begin shipping in the next 6-8
weeks.

*K3/0 and P3*. These will be the last two K3 Options we build, as they are
more complex and are taking more time to source key parts, sheet metal,
displays etc. We will update the shipping status on these after we begin
shipping the other K3 options listed above.

I'll post updates as we get closer to shipping these options. (And
if some begin shipping earlier than the above schedule. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Buying a K4 in UK

2023-08-04 Thread Eric Swartz
I am currently in contact with Justin at Moonraker. We also met at the
Friedrichshafen Ham Radio show in June. I'll report here as soon as I have
additional information on both the local sales and service for our products
in the U.K.

One note - For the reasons others have noted, we are also interested in
supporting independent repair persons inside the U.K who are familiar with
our products. Please contact me directly. eric(at)elecraft.com

Also, in addition to our in and out of warranty repair center for the Eu
since 2011, Carlo Bianconi in Bologna, Italy, who has an excellent lab and
does expert work, we have also added our Swiss Distributor, Lutz
Electronics as an additional repair center for in and out of warranty
products. The feedback from customers who have repairs done there has also
been excellent. Lutz speaks vey good English, German and French and also
has an expedited method for shipping to them from Germany.

On buying directly from us, one area of confusion among some international
buyers in the UK and elsewhere in the EU is that while quoted prices for
our products at local retail stores in Eu and the UK already include the
addition of your local VAT and the cost of shipping and insurance to them
from the U.S., the on-line prices on orders shipped directly from us do not
include the VAT or import duty. That is required by the international
authorities on your end to be paid by the buyer upon receipt. (Shipping
cost and insurance is also added by us to the invoice at the time of
billing prior to shipment.)

[Elecraft] K3 Options Last Time Buy Update and other products status:

2023-08-04 Thread Eric Swartz
I've been out of town much of this last month and I apologize for my lack
of regular updates over the past months on the K3 Options. The buck stops
here - I apologize and take full responsibility for the slow updates and
delays in getting these completed and shipped.

The bottom line: We and our vendors were overloaded and had way over
estimated our ability to build and get the options and our regular core
products products out the door at the same time. We've been 'heads down'
focusing on adding capacity to correct this situation.

In my last update I was way over optimistic about our in-house production
ramp up rate and the capacity of our Caif. based PCB assembly houses and
their ability to ramp up production of all of our main products and the
very large number of individual K3 option boards at the same time. The
ongoing semiconductor shortages, while improving, have also continued to
put sand in the gears of production as we took time to hunt down
numerous hard to get parts. We -have- been successful at getting the very
large number of KIO3B and KSYN3A options built and shipped, along with the
K144XV and K144RFLK orders. But that, combined with our post-COVID ramping
up of our K4, Amplifier and Autotuner product lines, severely taxed both
our inside final assembly and our outside PCB assembly sub-contractor's
abilities to handle everything at once. We had to pull back and reset to
add production capacity and first focus on our core Radio, Amp and
Auto-Tuner products, with the K3 last time buy options following that.

We have now qualified and added several additional CA based PCB assembly
houses to work with our parts ordering group, which greatly increases our
production capacity. We are already using them for a wide range of boards
with good results and faster delivery.

This increased capacity has allowed us to catch up with our K4, Amplifier
and KAT500 Autotuner backlogs and these products now typically ship from
stock. (or occasionally 5-10 working days after order, depending on short
term order surges etc.)
**Catching up on these products has opened up additional capacity for our
K3 Options production, where we are now heavily focused.**

We're currently working with our PCB assembly vendors to solve any
remaining parts problems and to firm up the delivery dates for the
remaining K3 options. Fortunately we have sufficient raw unstuffed PC
boards in house for a number of the K3 options, which will speed the
production process. I will report back here in about 2 weeks, during the
week of 8/21, with updated status for each product, showing production
status, open issues etc.

(I may also report earlier on a subset of the K3 Options if we receive any
of the information we've asked for early (next week or the following week.)
One item that may start shipping soon is the KPA3A 100W option. We're
currently confirming if we have all the sheet metal and other parts in
house that go with the built and tested KPA3A RF assemblies.)

One additional note:
We've also been successful ramping the KX2 production rate enough to exceed
the order rate and reduce the backlog. We are working hard to push that
higher so KX2s are shipping from stock soon. We are also shipping against
our KX3 backlog and are working hard to get that production rate up so we
can get it back into a stocking situation.

Eric WA6HHQ

[Elecraft] Starting to Ship K3 & K3S Option Last Time Buy Orders (3/1/23)

2023-03-01 Thread Eric Swartz
Some good news now as we are beginning to ship K3 & K3S Option orders! I
apologize for the dearth of updates over the weeks since our last update -
We've had our heads down solving production issues and unexpected parts
shortages with the K3 & K3S options and our main products while managing
our regular product production flow.

On top of that, the large number of last time buy K3 & K3S option orders
now shipping is putting a heavy load on our sales department as we confirm
order info and work through the shipping process, which is on top of their
daily work managing all our our regular K4, KX products and Amplifier order
& shipping flow. (Madelyn and Michelle are amazing..)

*KIO3B & KSYN3A* - Now Shipping (finally!):
We received *100%* of both items late last week from our Calif. PCB
assembly subcontractor and we are testing, packaging and shipping them now.
This quantity will cover *all* of our deposit orders and most of our wait
list orders.

Please be patient with us as both the KIO3B and KSYN3A were extremely
popular and had a very large order response - they are at the very top of
our order list in quantity. Due to the large quantity of individual orders,
it shouldn't be a surprise that we will not ship all the orders instantly.
It will require a number of weeks as we step through the process of
contacting everyone to confirm shipping info, collect their shipping costs
(and additional funds for 1/2 deposit orders) and to ship their orders. You
will know you are getting close to shipping when we contact you to confirm
everything.

Once we finish the prepaid deposit orders, we'll be contacting our waitlist
orders and going through the same process to confirm shipping info, collect
funds etc. We will post here and via our newsletter much more often as we
work through the pile of orders. (% of deposit orders, and then the same
for waitlist orders. )

*The above process will repeat as we work throughout our other option
orders.*

*K144XV and K144RFLK:*
We have shipped 100% of our deposit orders for the K144XV and K144RFLK
options along with the majority of the waitlist orders who responded to our
emails. We have a few of these left. If you are on the waitlist for these
items and have not heard from us, please check your spam folder or contact
sa...@elecraft.com

*P3TXMON: *
We are contacting customers and shipping the first batch of these now. We
also expect a second assembled circuit board delivery in 3-4 weeks that
will cover the remaining order backlog.

*KAT3A:*
We have started shipping KAT3As and expect a second batch later this month
to complete shipping the backlog.

*KBPF3A:*
In process and should arrive here and start shipping by the end of this
month.

*KXV3B: *
In process and should arrive here and start shipping by the end of this
month.

*K3EXREF:* In process. We have the raw circuit boards in house and are
sourcing a few remaining parts for this board. If all goes well, these will
ship near the end of this month.

*KDVR3:* In process. Currently sourcing the DVR flash memory.

*KPA3A:* In process. One delay is a sheet metal order delivery for the rear

More updates soon (definitely sooner than this update) as we get closer to
the assembled circuit board and sheet metal delivery dates and get more

[Elecraft] Price increases held off until after this weekend's Hamcation Show

2023-02-09 Thread Eric Swartz
We just finished setting up our booth at the Hamcation show in Orlando,
FL, this afternoon. Whew!

To give everyone a chance to benefit from the current pre-increase prices,
we will be holding off the increases for everyone ordering at the show, on
the internet or by phone until after the show. The price increases will
occur most likely by late next week or early the following week of 2/20.

[Elecraft] K4 and K4D Backlog wait significantly reduced

2023-01-12 Thread Eric Swartz
We've been working hard to get the K4 & K4D backlog down and I'm now
pleased to announce that it has been reduced significantly. Whew!

We are now contacting customers that ordered in late Dec and early January
that their orders will be ready to ship in the next 10-20 business days.

Please contact sa...@elecraft.com or give us a call (831-763-4211)if you
ordered your K4 any time before the end of 2022 and have not heard from us.
We'll get your order back into the now very short queue. It's always
possible we have an old email address for you or that our emails were
missed or sent to your spam folder when originally sent.

Thanks again for your incredible patience as we've worked through the K4
and K4D backlog. We're working now on getting the K4HD radio and K4/K4D
to K4HD upgrade options parts sourced and then into production and out
later this year.

[Elecraft] Elecraft Price increase Alert

2023-01-12 Thread Eric Swartz
This is an early price increase alert for our list readers:

We will be increasing prices across all of our product lines at the end of
this month, on Jan. 31st.
Our on-line order forms will update with the new pricing at that time.

As we all have seen on the news and felt personally, inflation pressures
have pushed up prices for everyone over the past year. In our case the
costs for electronic components, sheet metal, displays etc. have all
increased significantly. And of course, our assembly and labor costs have
gone up. We've been absorbing all of these cost increases to date, but we
are now at the point where we must increase prices in order to keep our
products profitable and to provide you with the great products and service
you expect.

All orders placed with us -prior- to the increase date of January 31st will
be charged at the lower current pricing, even if they ship after the price
increase date.
Please order soon, as that will avoid the usual last minute crush of
orders.

Lastly, please resist the urge to call or email our sales/support team
about which products will be changing price or how much the changes will
be, as they do not have this information. (We're still in the middle of
reviewing all of our cost changes.)

I apologize for the increase - We'll strive to keep the price changes as
reasonable as possible.

[Elecraft] K3 & K3S Options Last Time Buy Update (12/02/2022)

2022-12-02 Thread Eric Swartz
I apologize for the delay getting this info out to everyone. (See my final
comments below after the status section for more info on what has caused
much of the delay.)

First - The current K3 & K3S option status. The following boards are now in
process, and should ship close to these dates ranges if there are no new
parts issues or surprise manufacturing delays.

P3TXMON 6-8 weeks
K3EXREF 8 weeks
KAT3A: 8 weeks
KDVR3 8 weeks
KPA3A6-8 weeks
KIO3B8-9 weeks
KSYN3A8 weeks
KBPF3A8 weeks
KXV3B 6-8 weeks

K144XV and K144RFLK 7-10 days
We've completed building an additional batch of K144XV 2M options and
we're finishing up the matching K144RFLK lock boards, which lock the
K144XV's frequency to the K3's reference oscillator.
We'll be contacting the remaining customers for these two items in order to
confirm shipping information (and collect the other half of the funds due
for shipping and those who made a half deposit.)

---

Remaining 3 Last time Buy items:

P3: Still seeing long parts delays from Analog devices and Microchip.

P3SVGA: Still seeing long parts delays from Intel (FPGA) and Microchip (uC).

K3/0 Mini: Microchip (uC) delays plus qualifying second sources on several
other parts. We are also evaluating our demo stock of K3/0 Minis to see if
that can help with regular orders or our wait-list orders.

We will update everyone on these last three items as we get new information.

General comments:
We've been navigating a wide range of parts and manufacturing issues these
past months. The K3 Options suffered in focus as we first had to keep our
primary product lines rolling out the door to you. (K4s, KX-Line, Amps
(100, 500 and 1500W) etc.) We've been successful sourcing parts for these
primary products and keeping them shipping :-) , but its taken way more
focus and effort that anyone expected..

We've also had to contend with one of our key circuit board assembly
subcontractors becoming unavailable after being sold to another company.
(All of our boards are built in the U.S.) That resulted in our other
assembly subcontractors becoming overloaded. Fortunately we have now
qualified and brought on-line several new U.S. circuit board assembly
companies with excellent results. In addition to smoothing our regular
production, this has made it possible to get our focus back on the K3
Options.

We will be posting updates for these products as they each get closer to
shipping.

Thank you again for your patience.

Eric WA6HHQ

[Elecraft] KPA1500 Amplifiers are now shipping from Stock

2022-10-06 Thread Eric Swartz
Just a heads up that we've been working hard to catch up with our order
backlog of KPA1500 solid state amps. Interest in the 1500 has been very
strong and we have been successful getting ahead of the increasing order
rate. (The 1500 fully integrates with our K3 and K4 Product lines and is
compatible with most HF transceivers from other manufacturers.)

KPA1500s are now available off the shelf for immediate delivery from stock
:-) Get 'em while they're hot off the press!

Shipping for the KPA1500 is also free to the lower 48 U.S. states
this month.

[Elecraft] K3/K3S Options Last time buy update

2022-05-01 Thread Eric Swartz
Hi Everyone,

I apologize for not posting this update last week. It was quite busy
at Elecraft HQ, plus I had two unexpected visits to the dentist. (Lots of
fun :-)

As you know by now, the logistics and parts production shortage problems
caused by the COVID pandemic have caused huge production problems for us
and the rest of the electronics industry, car manufacturers etc. The delay
getting the K3/K3S Options status out has primarily been due to the fact
that our Elecraft production, purchasing and engineering teams, in addition
to their normal day to day tasks, they have also been heavily focused on
working together to find production quantities of parts (and alternate
parts) for our primary product lines (K4, K4D, KX2, KX3, KPA500, KPA1500,
KXPA100 etc.) This is a herculean task, with new shortages popping up
every week. Even 'confirmed' scheduled parts ordered 12 months in advance
from major distributors can suddenly not show up on time. So far we have
been successful dodging these issues, finding alternate suppliers, locating
alternate parts, buying larger quantities of hard to get parts for
inventory etc. This has kept our primary products moving out the door in
steadily increasing quantities each month, (Feb. and March were record
months) but it also has slowed us from working on finding and purchasing
all the parts for the last run of K3/K3S options. That said, we are now
focusing more directly on this and have been successful getting many of the
critical K3/K3S option parts in house. Below is our current Status.

I've initially broken the options into 5 groups with estimated shipping
dates, depending on which options we are currently focused on, parts we
already have in stock, expected parts delivery times, certainty of
acquiring parts, manufacturing time and how close we are to having all
parts for each option in house. Dates will get firmer in general as we
move forward.

We will contact customers with currently booked orders (and wait list
customers in some cases) as each option gets close to shipping. (Please
try to resist calling sales for new updates as they are heavily loaded and
will not have new K3/K3sOption information until the next update comes out.)

Group 1:
a.) K144XV will be ready to ship within the next week. (We will start
contacting customers this week).
b.) K144RFLK: 6-8 weeks if everything goes ok. This board can be
installed after the K144XV is installed. (We're working to get this one
faster, if possible.)

Group 2: (These two options received the highest quantity of orders)
a.) KSYN3A: 7-12 weeks if there are no last minute surprises. We have been
successful locating and purchasing the primary problem parts, including the
SI570, Pic processor etc.

b.)KIO3BUPKIT: 8-12 weeks

Group 3:
KXV3B, KBPF3A, P3TX Monitor, KAT3A:, KPA3A 10-14 weeks

Group 4:
K3/0-Mini, K3EXREF, KDVR3. 14-16 weeks est. This may change +/- depending
on parts deliveries and availability.

Group 5:
P3, P3SVGA: After Group 4. Working on locating several hard to get
parts. Will update with estimated ship dates in following status updates
as this becomes better defined.

I will work to post updates every 2-3 weeks as we move forward. As parts
come in we hope some items in groups 2-4 will move to shorter times.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K4 Update Talk & Demo at QSO Today HamExpo Saturday

2022-03-11 Thread Eric Swartz
I'll be giving a K4 talk on its latest features, including a Demo of CESSB
compression, at 1700 UTC (9 AM PST, Calif Time). There will also be a live
interactive Q&A session immediately following the talk.

The talk will be in the VFairs auditorium section (where all the large
talks are located).

After the talk Q&A I will also periodically be at the Elecraft Booth (K4
section) in the Ham Expo KUMOSpace Lounge interactive audio/video area for
real time questions and more live K4 demo's.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S options

2022-01-27 Thread Eric Swartz
Hi Chuck - It's better if we do the Paypal refund from this end. We can do
that today if you wish.

Sales is being a bit conservative on the lead time for the Synths. It is
probably closer to 6-8 a\weeks at this point and I'm trying to beat that.
We finally have all the difficult to get long lead time parts for that
board in house now and the remaining time is for the raw PCB fabrication
and assembly/test.

So would you like us to go ahead and issue you a refund?

Eric

[Elecraft] Elecraft will not be at Hamcation Feb 11-13

2022-01-25 Thread Eric Swartz
In an abundance of caution we made the hard decision today to cancel
Elecraft's participation at the Florida Hamcation show (a little over two
weeks from today, 2/11-13). This decision was made to protect the health
of our booth team that would have been at the show.

We will be exhibiting at the on-line QSO Today Ham Expo this March 12-13.
Their in-booth personal video interaction format looks to be much improved
from the prior show too :-) Please drop by and say hi!

Hopefully Covid will calm back down soon so we can get out to see everyone
in person. We miss you all and look forward to seeing you soon.

Must be a bad HF propagation day!

Folks, All of the 'Old DOS computers' threads are now all closed due to the

[Elecraft] Elecraft job openings. Test/ Repair tech, customer support tech.

2021-04-12 Thread Eric Swartz
Hi,

We have openings for two different technical positions at Elecraft!

1. Technician position for our product test group.
 - This position requires good analog and digital skills with debug and repair
capability to the component level. Involves use of Spectrum Analyzers,
Oscilloscopes etc. and specialized computer software used for testing etc. Good
understanding of radio transmitter, amplifier and receiver operation at the
schematic and block diagram levels is also a plus.
- This is a full time or part time position working at our Watsonville, CA
facility.

2. Customer Support
This position will be supporting customer questions via phone calls and emails
on our current products. Good social skills and detailed operating experience
with our K3 or K3s, KX line, Amplifiers etc is a plus. Should also be familiar
with reading and understanding schematics, debugging customer failures over the
phone and via email etc.
This position can be full or part time, working from our Watsonville facility,
and possibly from home.

If you are interested, please email your contact information and
resume/experience to hr@ elecraft.com, and cc: eric@ elecraft.com so I can
track applicants too.

I'l be on in the Ham Expo sessions area with "K4 Operation and Features
Q&A" at 9am PDT. (15 min from now or so.)

Its in the sessions area of Ham Expo. They left "Elecraft" off of the
title, so it will not show up if you use the search icon with "Elecraft".
Searching sessions with "k4" does work though.

Video Quality looks better today on the Expo site. :-)

See you all there!

Re: [Elecraft] Interesting article...

2021-02-10 Thread Eric Swartz
I just saw this and below is a copy of what I posted to his comments
section.

"Hi Mike,

While the last year has been challenging due to the Covid crisis, the CA
wildfires near us and related supply issues, we are not now shut down by CA
for COVID and are financially healthy. We are alive and kicking - shipping
radios, amplifiers and accessories every week.

You mentioned the backlog on the KX2, KX3, KXPA100 and K2, for which I
apologize. All of these are still in production and shipping. Orders for
all of our products surprisingly have been much higher than we expected
during the Covid crisis, which has contributed to the current backlog on
these products. (It looks like hams had more time this past year to enjoy
the hobby, which has helped sales!) I just checked our shipping report for
the first ten days of this month (through today 2/10) and all of these are
shipping along with their accessories, the KPA500, KPA1500 etc. We
certainly have seen intermittent production delays due to parts shortages,
but to date nothing has shut us down. We've gotten pretty good at quickly
finding alternate parts when one is delayed.

I see you were disappointed the K3S was no longer in production. We
formally discontinued it May of 2019 when we introduced the K4, after a
close to 13 year run for the K3 and K3S. We've also previously discontinued
the K1 and KX1, which also had a long run. In general we discontinue
products as sales decrease over time and when new products replace them.
Fortunately we've been able to continue production of the K2 since its
first ship in Jan of 1999. Now that's a long run :-)

We are also ramping up production and shipments of the K4, which also
competes for production resources. I noted in my recent live video Q&A
session on the K4 that we had just received 100 full PC board sets for the
K4 from our local assembly subcontractor and these are winding their way
through production. (See the Elecraft YouTube channel for the Zoom
recording.) We received a huge response to the K4 and as a result have a
very large number of backorders that will keep us busy and financially
healthy for some time.

Lastly you mentioned the 'TBD' on K3S option boards and accessories. We
recently asked for interest from our customers on a special run of all of
these and received a very large response, which makes it economical to
build another run of most of these. We've now received the quote updates
from our suppliers and we will be contacting everyone starting next week
who expressed interest in these items.

We're still in business, healthy and enjoying designing and building
exciting products for the amateur radio community, and we hope to continue
doing so for some time!"

For a while, the FCC declined to take action against criminal (like
"convicted") violators if the crime did not involve telecommunications
law. I don't remember the actual case that Doug mentioned other than it
wasn't one of mine :) but I do remember that there have been several.
For other violators, there is a provision in the Communications Act that
requires the FCC to determine if the conviction bears on the moral
qualifications to become or remain an FCC license holder, and there are
provisions in other statutes that bar someone from holding or receiving
a license if in arrears to court-mandated payments..

As far as the present situation, what the notice said (in plain
language) is using a radio while planning or committing a crime is a
crime itself. Has nothing to do with the content as long as it does not
involve planning or committing that criminal act. Yes, there are limits
to First-Amendment-protected speech. (Pardon me if I'm teaching
 first-year Constitutional Law.)

[Elecraft] K4 Status Update

2020-12-21 Thread Eric Swartz
K4 Status Update - from deep inside Elecraft

First I apologize for the delay getting this update out. I've been head
down, along with the rest of our team and our suppliers, for a good part of
this month working to solve problems and get K4s flowing out to you faster.

We ran into delays in December due to several items:

Our biggest problem has been due to an interruption of deliveries on
critical K4 Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs) from our primary
high-quality assembly subcontractor, who is located near us in Monterey,
CA. This was due to both an unexpected surge in demand from their other
customers, who were ramping up faster than expected, and on top of our K4
production needs, a significant increase in demand from us for our regular
non-K4 product PCBAs (KPA1500, KX3, KX2, etc.) - both from huge Black
Friday/Cyber Monday orders and our normal holiday season surge in sales.

Due to a miscommunication between us, they delayed several key K4 PCBAs in
favor of PCBAs for our other products. When we finally caught the error
(after multiple shipments were late or did not arrive) it took several
weeks to get everything straightened out. Circuit board assembly lines,
parts acquisition, etc. do not stop and start on a dime. This is
frustrating to say the least. While we may have received the majority of
the K4 PCB assemblies, if any of the other boards needed to complete the K4
100% are delayed, it holds up K4 manufacturing. That's frustrating for us
and of course you. We've corrected the issue and we will see more PCBAs
arriving late this week or next week. This should get K4 production back on
track with regular deliveries to us on a weekly basis. I'm hopeful that
January and beyond will be much smoother.

We have also just received several needed parts for a small number of
production K4s that had all their circuit boards and were already in
manufacturing. These K4s will be ready to test soon. If all goes well, they
will be out by next week. If there are additional test-related delays, they
will ship the following week.

Early in December, it took us longer to finish implementing and testing a
planned update to the K4's internal Linux OS, which slowed things a bit.
Thanks to the hard work from our s/w engineers and our Field Testers,
that's completed, and we have updated the automated s/w build process and
server along with K4's built-in s/w update process. It's very cool and easy
to use.

The other news is that due to the larger than expected surge in regular
orders, above and beyond orders and backlog for K4's, we have a very large
regular product backlog which we are shipping to you as quickly as
possible.

One last note - Elecraft will be closed for the holidays this Thursday and
Friday (12/24-25) and New Years Day on Friday (1/1), with a few employees
off extra days for well-deserved rest during that period. We hope everyone
has a great holiday!

Hi Tim,

We’re still here and have been back accepting and repairing RSAs for many
months. Elecraft is in good shape - Fortunately the fires were never close to
the factory, which is not in a forested area.

I apologize for any confusion with your repair request in May Apparently
there was a miscommunication on your request.

I’m forwarding your email directy to our support team
and they should be in contact with you tomorrow (Tuesday).

[Elecraft] K4 Update Oct 9

2020-10-09 Thread Eric Swartz
To answer the big question, yes we started shipping small numbers of our
first regular production K4s in late September. :-) We are building more
K4s now in production and we expect more to start going out late next week
or the following week.

Our production rate will be slower than we want through the rest of October
and early November as we fine tune everything
and navigate intermittent supplier delays, temporary production stoppages
etc. and as we continue to tune our production and test processes. As the
K4 production rate gets stabilized we will also be able to give better
estimates when individual orders will ship. Please be patient with us as we
work through this.

One note - initial K4 orders on 5/17 were huge, both on the Web and at
Dayton. (As were ordered the following weeks and months..) Even the first
shipping group K4 orders with large deposits from that first day were so
large that they will take some time to ship. We will email or call to
notify everyone as their order gets close.

It's been a challenge dodging all of the unexpected obstacles we've
encountered the last several months. COVID-19 shutdowns, the CA Fires and
the resulting impacts on our staff, suppliers and overall efficiency have
been challenging. Many of our team are working from home due to COVID-19
requirements (including Wayne and myself, engineering and most of our sales
staff). The CA fires had a major impact in late August and through
September. Two of our engineers lost their homes and radios, and a third
came close, with the fire coming within a mile of his location. Fortunately
everyone is OK and back at work and there is no ongoing fire threat
locally.

The Elecrft HQ and factory in Watsonville is far from where the active
fires were and was never at risk. It's in an open industrial park far from
the forests and near the coast. We have also reconfigured the factory and
test area layouts for safe operation with regard to proper social
distancing, better air flow and good workstation isolation between workers.
Our inventory is safe and our production and test teams are hard at
work there.

Several of our local suppliers (machine shops etc.) had mandatory
evacuations for several weeks as a precaution during the local fires.
Fortunately their facilities were undamaged, but that has increased delays
getting parts finished and delivered to us as they restart. Each day
presents new challenges. So far, we've been able to work through each
new surprise.

We are in good financial shape, with plenty of funds to run our operation
and fund the K4 ramp up. Amazingly, even during the COVID shut downs in the
spring we continued to receive orders for all of our products at a strong
rate. It looks like the extra time everyone had while staying at home has
increased interest in ham radio! As a result we are still running with a
strong backlog of orders for our regular products, which are shipping daily
in addition to the K4. This has helped enormously.

Thank you to everyone for your support.

73,
Eric

[Elecraft] K4 Final Retail Pricing

2020-09-30 Thread Eric Swartz
We've just posted our final retail pricing for the K4 to the Elecraft web
page.

We worked hard to keep costs under control and the final price adjustments
reasonable with a retail increase of just $100 for the K4/10 and K4/10
versus their prior max deposits, and an increase of $300 for the K4D.

K4 Retail Prices:
K4/10 $3,599.95
K4: $4,099.95
K4D: $4,999.95
K4HD ($ still TBD after final release)

The K4 general info and order page has also been updated at:

[Elecraft] N. CA Fires: Elecraft facility and employees are OK

2020-08-22 Thread Eric Swartz
We have received a number of inquiries asking if we are all safe and if
Elecraft is directly threatened by the current lightning induced fires in
northern California. (The one closest to the north of us is named the “CZU
August Lightning Complex”)

Both Wayne, myself and our families are safe, along with Elecraft. Both of us
live some distance from the active fires. I am closer in Aptos, CA, 8 miles
south of the coastal city of Santa Cruz. So far the fire is staying several
miles north of Santa Cruz in the Santa Cruz mountains. Conditions improved
somewhat today, slowing the fire with lower temps, coastal fog and the forecast
of an afternoon wind shift that may push back on the fire. Of course I am
watching this closely.

The Elecraft Factory is open and safe. It is located in Watsonville, CA, next
to HW 1, another 10 miles south of where I live. Its in a small research park
in an open area, well away from the forested areas and the mountains.

All of our employees are safe. One, who does live in the mountians up north in
the fire area, was evacuated safely ahead of the fire with his wife. We are
hoping their home survived, which has a very large permanent fire break around
it that they had previously cleared and maintained. Fingers crossed..

We will make sure to keep everyone here updated.

Re: [Elecraft] Lightning Season, disconnect COMPUTER etc.

2020-08-15 Thread Eric Swartz
One note: Keith mis-spoke when he stated "Spare K3 board supplies are low
or gone". We certainly are not stopping support and repairs for the K3 and
K3S. (Of course there are some lightning damaged radios that are not
economical to repair.) Though some repairs may take longer as replacement
parts are ordered.

What is happening is that we are pivoting from board swaps to component
level repairs on many K3 and K3S boards. Also, we will still be building
boards for these radios that can be sold for upgrades and repair swap outs
on a case by case, lot basis, based on demand. (There is a sign up list
for upgrade / spare board requests on our web page for the upgrade boards.)

Re: [Elecraft] Audio settings

2020-08-09 Thread Eric Swartz
I also use the HC-5 Heil element with my K3S.

It has a lower gain than most dynamic mics, so set the MIC SEL menu item to FP
H in the menu. (Front Panel, high gain preamp on). If you are using the rear
panel mic jack, set the menu to RP H.

Set mic gain so that you are peaking 3-5 bars on the ALC meter when talking.

I usually talk close to the mic (Within 1” or less) for best audio quality.

With my voice I run the TX EQ flat as the HC-5 already shapes the audio.

Re: [Elecraft] Alternative AMP to KX3 since Elecraft has temporarily stopped making AMPS

2020-05-25 Thread Eric Swartz
Hi Jim,

Your order came in while we we've under the shelter in place order for
Santa Cruz County, which slowed down production on the amps. We never
totally stopped their manufacture, but the rate of production was reduced.
We're catching up now with the backlog and are certainly still shipping
all of the amps (KXPA100, KPA500 and KPA1500).

I'll check tomorrow and get back to you with what we think the remaining
time will be for your order to ship.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 power supply fan noise

2020-05-23 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
Hi Peter,

If the amp is on, there needs to be at least some PS fan activity at a low
speed to cool the PS in idle.

What s/n is your 1500? On later s/ns we changed a resistor in the ps fan
circuit to slow them down a bit more.

An alternative is to swap your ant 1 and 2 connections, putting the 6m ant on
ANT 1. Then you can listen to 6m with the amp off.

Re: [Elecraft] K4???

2020-05-15 Thread Eric Swartz
Hi everyone,

At Elecraft, like many of you, we are in our 9th week of shelter in place.
This has been tough on all of us. Back on March 16th, when the initial
California state and local orders were issued with an April 11 estimated end
date, we suspected that it would last longer than that, but not as long as it
this. The majority of our production team had to be furloughed immediately,
with a few working from home. Most of our sales, support and the K4
engineering team have also been working from home. We allowed a minimal
skeleton staff on site. ( Less than you can count on one hand, with each
operating alone in large separate areas.). We've been able to ship a subset of
our existing radios and accessories from finished goods stock, which has kept
cash flow coming in. (We thank you for the continuing orders! )

We’ve also spent this time totally reorganizing our sales, operations,
production and test areas for proper social distancing along with extreme
cleaning and health screening procedures as per the new local and national
COVID-19 guidelines for manufacturers. (Wearing masks at all times, Daily
health screening upon entry to the building, additional spacing and partitions
between work stations and ‘you touch it, you clean it’ procedures etc.) I’ll
be posting links to some pictures of this in the next couple of days. This is a
required change as per our local and State health departments.

Many of our local sub-contractors (sheet metal fabrication, circuit board
assembly etc) have also been impacted by shelter in place orders. Over the
coming weeks, as the State and local health authorities slowly allow more
activity, we should be able to get better delivery estimates from them as they
are able to ramp back up. Like us, they are eager to get back on line.
National and international parts suppliers have been similarly impacted.

So what does this mean for first K4 shipments? Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic
we were projecting first K4 deliveries beginning sometime in the April - May
window this year. Obviously the pandemic has has thrown out those estimates.
Based on a gradual reopening in California and other areas, our current
feedback from suppliers, and taking into account unexpected delays, shortages,
last minute engineering changes etc., my estimate is that first K4 shipments
will begin somewhere in a window of late this July through the end of August.
We’ll keep you informed as we get better information.

As a side note, I’d like to thank everyone who has ordered a K4 for your
support. We anticipated seeing cancellations during this pandemic delay, but we
have received very few. Our K4 order backlog has actually continued to increase
over the past 9 weeks. Wow! You, as our supporters and customers, have
continued to energize and amaze us as we have created new products for you
these past 21 years. Thank you.

Also, as with all of our products, our engineering team keeps designing new
features during the product‘s lifetime. They certainly have not been idle on
the K4 during the shelter in place order. (Our DSP S/W defined radio
architecture allows us to continually give you a ‘new’ radio with each new sw
release. :-)

Keep an ear out for us on the air too. While making a few short test
transmissions with my K4 this morning I ended up in a very nice QSO on 20M SSB!
If you hear me, or others on our team, please say hello. We may be on a K4!

We hope you, your family and friends stay well during this difficult time.

73,
Eric

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Technical Support

2020-05-06 Thread Eric Swartz
Also note that support is normally active during 8am-5pm West Coast time
Monday-Friday.

Monday and Tuesday are typically our support heaviest load as we digest support
requests and calls from late on Friday through the weekend, causing a bit more
delay in response time.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Technical Support

2020-05-06 Thread Eric Swartz
We're still here and Elecraft support is definitely active:-)

Rob, Doug and and the rest of our support team are working remotely from home,
primarily via email. As a result of the shelter in place requirements
currently through the end of May, and the inefficiencies that creates, our
response times are longer, so please be patient with us.

Our email/call volume (and orders!) are actually higher than normal. Must be
due to everyone having more time for ham radio as they shelter in place at home!

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Update?

2020-03-22 Thread Eric Swartz
Hi Bill,

Yes, the abrupt statewide 'shelter in place' orders in California, New York,
New Jersey, Illinois etc. are certainly creating a lot of schedule uncertainty
for companies like ours, who manufacture in the U.S. , and for our U.S. based
suppliers and distributers.

Add to that delays in shipping of parts from offshore companies due to delays
at their factories and the worldwide reductions of air flights etc. which has
made it very hard to get solid answers to delivery questions. I believe we
have a number of weeks to go before we'll get reliable info we can believe in
so we can update the first ship dates for the K4. A lot of that depends on how
long the current state orders stay in effect. Fun, eh?

It has also played havoc with our employees as they try to navigate the impact
on their personal life of the statewide order to stay at home along with the
shut down of schools. ( Plus the stress of frantically searching stores for
toilet paper.. ;-)

Our engineering team has transferred a lot of lab and development equipment
home and is working hard there testing and adding features to the K4. Our
Production logistics, Tech Support and Sales teams are also working the phones
remotely. We're working hard in this difficult environment to keep the gears
turning, albeit a little slower than we like.

We were getting ready to film some K4 videos for an update that inclued showing
the latest features when the statewide order hit. I'm slowly getting this back
in process, in between all the other balls we have in the air. Stay tuned!

I apologize for any delays we have responding here or to direct emails and
phone calls. We really appreciate everyone's concern and understanding. The
positive feedback we have received from each of you we've talked with recently,
along with your continued orders, has been a real boost to the whole team here.

I'll try to pop up here more often with updates when I come up for air..

Re: [Elecraft] Shipping Status updates

2020-03-17 Thread Eric Swartz
Hi JC and everyone on the list,

I apologize for not replying earlier today. As you might expect, we have
been extremely busy adjusting our operations to the announcement from Santa
Cruz County to 'Shelter in Place'. Fortunately, we have been anticipating
this possibility coming to our area, both from ongoing news coverage of the
coronavirus spread and more recently when the counties in the S.F Bay Area
to our north announced their own Shelter in Place order. It has been a very
busy number of days here at Elecraft H.Q.

Yes we are still alive and in operation, albeit with the majority of our
employees working from home. We are just about to release a more detailed
update on our web page and via direct email on this. I've copied it below
for everyone here to read.

Feel free to ask me questions here or via direct email. I may not respond
immediately, but I'll try to answer as much as I can.

73,
Eric

Elecraft's priority is the safety and well-being of our employees,
customers and the community in which we live and work. We wanted to reach
out and make sure that all of you are staying safe as well as share a few
of the steps we have taken to ensure we are able to protect our colleagues
here at Elecraft while maintaining a high level of support for all of you.

*Santa Cruz County Shelter in Place *

Santa Cruz County has issued a three-week "shelter in place" order from
3/17 through 4/ 7 to guard against the further spread of the Coronavirus.
Residents have been ordered to “shelter in place” and refrain from all
non-essential activities outside of their home. Telecommuting from home is
encouraged. Employees can travel to work to retrieve equipment and
documents needed to telecommute, and companies are allowed reduced staff
on-site to support telecommuting along with protection of inventory,
security and some other business functions.

*What is happening at Elecraft*

Sales and Customer Support are setting up to take calls to Elecraft from
their home offices during our normal work hours. We will be trying our
best to maintain a business-as-usual service, but, inevitably, you may hear
kids laughing or dogs barking in the background during a call with us. We
appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate the current
reality together with all of you.

We will continue to ship products that we have in stock. Items that we do
not have in stock will be shipped later in April when we are able to
resume full manufacturing.

All of our engineers are able to continue their work on projects off-site,
including K4 development.

Manufacturing and production at Elecraft will continue when Santa Cruz
County's "shelter in place" is lifted.

*Placing Orders*

You may place orders online at elecraft.com or by calling Sales at
831-763-4211. We will continue to ship products that we have in stock.
Items that we do not have in stock will be shipped later in April when we
are able to resume full manufacturing. We will not process your payment
until we are able to ship your order. If your order is not shipped within
a week, we may have to contact you for payment information since our system
does not store credit card numbers. You may also place a note on your
order form to process your payment immediately, and you’ll receive a
shipping tracking number as soon as we’re able to ship your order.

If you have any questions regarding your order or about any of our
products, please feel free to call us at 831-763-4211 or email
sa...@elecraft.com or supp...@elecraft.com

All of us at Elecraft hope you stay safe and healthy, and we thank you for
being a part of our Elecraft Family.

Hi Lee,

We definitely do! :-)

If you emailed later on Friday afternoon or over the weekend, their response
can be delayed on Mondays as they work their way through the weekend backlog.

Also our CS team was hit hard by the seasonal flu (-not- the Corona virus..)
the last two weeks and was down to 50% staffing on a number of days.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 news?

2020-03-05 Thread Eric Swartz
Hi Irwin,

We are also concerned about the impact of the COVID-19 virus on the
shipping and supply chains we use for parts used in all of our products,
including the K4. While managing the supply chain and quickly finding
alternate parts when they go obsolete or when shortages pop up has been a
normal part of our production planning process for years, it has certainly
become more challenging as this situation quickly evolves.

We've been tracking and compensating for this on the K4 for some time.
While we manufacture our radios, amps etc. here in California, the
electronic components used by us and almost all other U.S. manufacturers
come from both the U.S. and from suppliers all around the world. (Many are
not even manufactured in the U.S.) We've been careful to source many of the
major K4 items, like the flat screen display used in the K4, from other
countries than China. The biggest area of concern recently has been with
the passive components (resistors, caps etc) used on all of our designs.
Even when purchased from U.S. suppliers, many of these parts may come from
China and other offshore sources.

We also have built up inventory on many critical K4 parts here (including
Knobs etc.) but of course, as noted by others, it only takes a single
critical part delay in the future to hold things up. We plan with
alternate suppliers when possible, but even then we have to periodically
scramble to source new parts for production. Fun, eh?

In any case, so far we have not encountered any major show stoppers, though
even prior to the current COVID scare began seeing delivery delays
increasing. We'll have a much better picture on how this will impact the K4
as major component deliveries arrive at the factory over the coming weeks.
Fortunately, we are busy both getting all aspects of production started and
we are also working in engineering every day to add cool new features to
the K4. Not much time to sleep at Elecraft these days.

Time for more coffee..

Eric

2020-01-07 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Clarification on my prior posting:

The price increase note below does not directly apply to pre-orders for the K4.
We're finalizing pricing now as we get a better feel for parts pricing, tarriffs
on parts, local assembly cost here etc.  We hope to keep it reasonably close to
the deposit amounts.

One other item: its a 28 day notice, not 30.  ;-)

Yes, in addition to using the VFO knob to change frequency, you can change the
K4's frequency by clicking on the desired signal with a mouse or by tapping on
it with your finger.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Internal and External display resolution

2020-01-02 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Hi Dave,

The K4's internal LCD has a resolution 1024x600, which is very sharp.

We also demonstrate the K4 with a large external 1920x1080 HDMI compatible
monitor. Our h/w should support up to 4K external monitors.

Note that rather than just mirroring the internal color LCD of the K4 on the
external monitor, we can display data independently from the LCD at the same
time in whatever format we wish, such as the full screen spectrum and waterfall
display we've been showing at the shows at 1920x1080.

Contact support(at)elecraft.com and request the free KPA1500 power supply load
resistor kit.  They can also tell you if your amp S/N was manufactured before we
started adding the load resistor to new units some time ago.

I was able to tighten those screws a little, but it made no difference. Adding

100 feet away: its strength depends on the antenna direction, and it is at
least 7 dB weaker with a dummy load.

I have submitted a request to tech support.

Hi Scott,

We have seen this in rare cases on a few 1500s. It appears to be caused by

Very slightly loosening (not too far!) and then firmly re-tightening all four
screws on this SO-239 connector will insure a good ground connection between
this connector and the rear panel. (There are lock washers between the nuts
and the SO-239 inside.)

If the screws are loosened too far, you may have to remove the bottom cover
of the amp to hold the interior nuts in place while you re-tighten the four
screws.  (Make sure the 50V power and control cables are disconnected when
you remove any covers on the amp.)

Me: How about a co-founder?
BRC: No...
Me: Why not? I'm about to buy a new radio, and it's down to Elecraft and you

Me:  Excuse me?

Me: Well, maybe you can find someone under him, like the VP of engineering. I'd
like to meet him. Or her.
BRC: Oh, no. That's not possible. . You see, he doesn't
actually design any of our products. He has a team working under him, and they do all the
work. He does select the knobs that go on the radios, though.
Me: The chief knob-picker, eh? Gee, I was hoping for someone who knows how to
match impedance, or optimize a sigmoid response. Got any amplifier experts?
BRC: Not really.
Me: AGC gurus?
BRC: Not that I know of.
Me: Anybody who solders?
BRC: Oh, yes! You could have lunch with Maria. She's our absolute best solderer.
Me: Can she dig a signal out of the noise? Does she like hiking?
BRC:
Me: Never mind. You know, I'm glad I called you. I think my mind is made up.
Good-bye and thank you!

Re: [Elecraft] Disparity between KPA500 remote utility downloads

2019-11-19 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Hi Dave,

These are two different programs. The first one you show in the jpg, with less
color, is the KPA500 utility, which is primarily designed for downloading code
to the 1500 and reading back status etc in real time. It also has very basic
remote control.

The KPA500 Utility is downloaded from
https://elecraft.com/pages/firmware-software
under the 'Amplifier Firmware and Software' tab.

The second 'more colorful' program you show on your webpage is the KPA500 Remote
. It is the full featured remote control program for the KP500.

The KPA500 Remote Software is downloaded from the same
https://elecraft.com/pages/firmware-software
page under the  'Logging and Control Software for the K-Line and KX-Line'  tab.
