Jim
I don't know where its laid down but arent domestic wall sockets "one
circuit double access". I would look in a UK National Electric Code. My bet
is its 13 amps total. You could also check the terminal connections of the
socket and make a determination.

Dear Fellow Listers,

Perhaps my brain isn't in gear today, but here goes..

Re UK domestic electrical sockets. Where a double electrical socket is
rated for 13 Amps, does that mean 13 Amps each side, or 13 Amps in total
?

Whatever the answer might be - where is it laid down?

Generally, if the conducted and/or radiated emissions vary by more than 2

hello Doug,
that is on my mind as well, I have recieved very good replies, but still unsure
of the EU stance in general ( As One Voice) governing all of the EU.
I realize some countries are trying harder and consious of waste as I am. But
when a directive is released by the EU, it should
be carried out by everyone and not have targets and dates from each EU member,
when there are 25 memebrs and growing.
The confusion of this directive has hit EU countries, thus they are pushing
the dates out to 2006 as noted recently
on emails within this forum, the impact to those countries is felt, so
hopefully they'll know the impact to us as producers exporting
to some EU member states. And knowing all the details is very critical at this
time.

Government is approximating the WEEE (and RoHS) Directives into UK law. Some
other Member States have already enacted the WEE Directive while others are in
the process of doing so. As far as companies are concerned, EC Directives
should be taken as pointers to what national legislation SHOULD look like.
Directives direct Member States (e.g. national governments) to pass national
laws, they do not direct private companies to do anything.

Directives contain a date by which Member States "must" pass national
legislation to place into force the requirements of the Directive. Sometimes
Member States don't comply with this date and sometimes the Commission them
prosecute as a result.

If you read the DTI announcement then you will see that far from being written
in stone, it is written in fudge. Enjoy!

Re: UK Domestic Electrical Socket Outputs

2005-04-04 Thread owner-emc-p...@listserv.ieee.org
Chris, Jim

Just taken a look at BS 1363-2: 1995, which is the part dealing with sockets -
the results are interesting!

Here are the most relevant bits (with an awful lot left out!)

13.12 "Multiple socket-outlets shall be capable of simultaneous use of all
socket-outlets"

16 Temperature rise
16.1 "Socket-outlets and their surroundings shall not attain excessive
temperatures in normal use."
16.1.1 "Compliance shall be checked by the tests described in 16.1.2, and
16.1.3 for fixed socket-outlets and portable socket-outlets respectively."

16.1.2
"……
The line, neutral and earth terminals of a single socket-outlet are connected
to an incoming and outgoing 2.5 mm2 2-core and earth PVC insulated and
sheathed cable as given in Table 5a of BS 6004:1991.

A twin unfused socket-outlet is connected with an incoming cable as described
above but with no
outgoing cable.

A multiple unfused socket-outlet having more than two sets of socket contacts
is connected to an incoming 4 mm2 2-core and earth PVC insulated and sheathed
cable as given in Table 5a of BS 6004:1991. There shall be no outgoing cable.
…."

"Socket-outlets under test shall be subjected to electrical loading as given
in Table 5. "
...
 "

Table 5 — Loading of socket-outlets for temperature-rise test

Balance of load ± 0.4 A

"

2.5sq mm cable is rated at 20A and is used for most domestic ring main and
spur circuits, whereas 4sq mm is rated at 28A and is often used for commercial
ring main and spur circuits (or so I believe).

So, it seems - quite logically - that the rating of the socket effectively
depends on the cable to which it is to be connected! Therefore it seems that
sockets intended for domestic purposes must be rated at a total load of 20A
(say 14A + 6A), whereas those for commercial circuits can be rated for a total
load of 26A (=2x 13A).

Thus you probably can both be said to be describing acceptable situations !

This brought home to me something that I nearly did wrong recently when I
nearly fitted a triple 13A UNFUSED socket into an existing twin socket wall
box - I never read the instructions, but I assume they said that the supply
cable has to be 4sq mm!

BTW: I bought that triple socket from a local branch of THE big DIY
supermarket, and it was designed to convert a twin outlet into a triple outlet
- I wonder how many people have fitted them to existing ring mains with 2.5sq
mm cable?

laws, they do not direct private companies to do anything.

Enjoy!

Richard,

You are correct that, at least in this
case, much of this is written in fudge.

On this side of the pond, to many producers
it appears that the UK
has the timeliest information and many are taking this as the norm for the
entire community.  In addition, I don’t have the resources to track
every member of the EU and their implementation dates.  So my policy has
been to use the EU deadlines, as they are published.

Last Friday, there is an interesting article
>from the BBC.  In this article both the UK
and Germany
are apparently delaying. My question is this, “How can a single nationality
delay beyond the mandated dates published for the community? “

Doug,

I'm not sure why you would expect a
statement regarding the UK
situation on the Europa web site.

I agree that it is always a good idea to
look at the source rather than relying on info 3rd hand, and since the details
of the DTI's web site have already been posted there is no reason why you and
others should not do this.

Perhaps you and/or others are thinking
that the announcement refers to what is happening in Europe generally - it
doesn't, it relates only to the way the UK Government is approximating the WEEE
(and RoHS) Directives into UK
law.  Some other Member States have already enacted the WEE Directive
while others are in the process of doing so.  As far as companies are
concerned, EC Directives should be taken as pointers to what national
legislation SHOULD look like.  Directives direct Member States (e.g.
national governments) to pass national laws, they do not direct private
companies to do anything.

Directives contain a date by which Member
States "must" pass national legislation to place into force the
requirements of the Directive.  Sometimes Member States don't comply with
this date and sometimes the Commission them prosecute as a result.

RE: UK Domestic Electrical Socket Outputs

2005-04-04 Thread owner-emc-p...@listserv.ieee.org
Jim

The answer lies in BS1363 of which I don't have a copy but from memory, BS1363
for some reason specifies that double outlets are only required to be rated at
13A in total.

However, you will find that some manufacturers rate their double sockets at
13A per outlet ie 26A in total. That was the case with some MK sockets I
installed at home (before the dreaded "Part P" I hasten to add). MK also do a
treble outlet but they added a fuse so the total in that case was only 13A.

Split ferrite core & molded ferrite core

2005-04-04 Thread owner-emc-p...@listserv.ieee.org
Dear Experts,

Compliance testing for a product has been done with a split type
ferrite core in the cable and report has been prepared and submitted to
VCCI. For FCC & CE DoC has been prepared with photos showing the split type
ferrite core assembled at the appropriate position in the cable. Now the
manufacturing wants to replace the split core with a molded core. Is it
necessary to retest with this molded core and one more test report
generation? I request you experts to point out the stand on VCCI, CE & FCC
on this.

Sincerely

Hi Folks

There ARE some sites where some of the information can be found
http://europa.eu.int/scadplus/scad_en.htm, but this is only the EU information

You can find the transposition information for many New Approach Directives
here - under "Info about Directive" - but not WEEE& RoHS (etc).

However, hopefully in time, the information we need will appear on one of
these sites.

EU government can’t make national laws (legislation) for individual EU
countries. It can however make it an absolute requirement that national
governments create their own legislation in respect of directives it creates.
It can impose penalties on EU countries who don’t comply or fail to comply
with deadlines on implementing such national legislation.

Thus if national governments fail to meet the Aug 05 deadline on implementing
national legislation in respect of the WEEE directive they will be liable to a
fine, penalty, slap on the wrist.

For “latest” info on other countries, look at the Perchards report Jan 05
on the DTi sustainability/weee web site. Unbelievably the EU can’t get their
act together to produce a web page which keeps track of where each member is
in respect of implementing directives – or if they have no-one can find it :)

As I understand it, the Basic Law at the Federal level has been passed in
Germany but the various Länder (local states) still have to pass their
enabling legislation. Can someone from Germany confirm this please? If true,
does it mean that the law could apply in some Länder before others, or is
there a synchronising mechanism?

Can anyone point me to where I might find the source of the commonly used USB
port symbol ( looks like a horizontally oriented three prong pitch fork).

I am trying to establish if there are any restrictions or requirements for the
use of this symbol.

RE: WEEE Diective

2005-04-04 Thread owner-emc-p...@listserv.ieee.org
You won’t find anything on the Europa site because this is a UK (government)
decision affecting the introduction of WEEE legislation in the UK. The
original dates still stand as far as the EC are concerned and some EU
countries will have their legislation in place. You need to comply with WEEE
on a country by country basis as the requirements may vary.

Hello all,

Be careful with this announcement. We have been unable to find collaborating
information on the Europa web site. Possibly some consultants, certain
periodicals, and the UK DTI office believe this to be true but until I see
confirmation on the Europa site and the Official Journal, it is my opinion
that the original dates are still in effect.

I also noticed that one of the announcements from an industry periodical
confused the term “take-back” with something related to dates. In
addition, concerning dates, they freely interchanged “take-bake” with
“put-back”. In the case of this directive, “take-back” is referring
to the issue of producer taking back obsolete equipment for recycling!

Hi All

Under pressure from Industry the UK Government has phased back implementation
of the WEEE Directive from August until January 2006.

Re-2: WEEE in Germany

Hello Richard,

check www.bmu.de
there is an englisch site, too. :-)
As I understood so far, the law passed on march 24st 2005 but the "Länder"
structure for taking back the equipment and so on has to be implemented yet.

Don, others,

Thanks for the link.

>From the information I have, the WEEE Directive seems to be the biggest
problem in the biggest countries (UK, Italy, France and Germany). Smaller
countries, be they older members (e.g.Belgium and the Netherlands) or recent
accession countries (e.g. Hungary and Slovakia) seem to have their legislative
act together. I'm not sure about medium sized countries, such as Spain and
Poland. Perhaps others could confirm or correct?

{To clarify, by small, medium and large I do not mean geographic area, but
rather weighted voting rights within the EU legal system (and correspondingly
within the ESOs - European Standards Organisations).}
