I think it's good that you are allowing everyone to come and see Dukee.

Hideyo and I were just talking about how when kitties get cold to the
touch like that they sometimes don't seem to want to be warmed up.
That the do just the opposite and go and lay down on tile or some such
thing.  I don't understand why that should be either.

Terry, his pulling away is no refection on his love for you, or even if
he's "happy". Sometimes they just need to distance themselves from
those of us still firmly connected to the earth plane. He's spending
time in and out of his body and it may just be that the touch of his
loved ones brings him back to awareness, when he's spending time
adjusting to being "out of body".

It depends on what is causing the anemia.
If it is either an auto-immune reaction or lymphoma in the bone marrow,
steroids should help (though a stronger steroid like dexamethasone would help
more, probably).  If it is leukemia the cancer it might help also.
It probably will not help for any other cause of anemia.

In addition to what Michelle said .. I
think many people on the list are not egotistical for some reasons.. we don’t
really care about “being right”—we just want to help others
in any way we can.. lots of people on the list don’t even have felk
kitties but still stay on the list because of the nature of the group of
people..

so nice?

I think that the reason this list is
different is that it takes a different sort of person to want to and be willing
to care for cats with FeLV.  It takes a lot of compassion, and also a lot
of willingness to face hard things, and also a willingness to have an open mind
and do some research. All of this makes the list self-selecting, I think, to
people who are more generally compassionate and less combative than on other
lists. And people withh FeLV positive cats also have to deal with the fact that
most vets are just abysmal and clueless on this subject, which makes us really
need to depend on each other to learn the information that we all need to take
care of our cats.  Which, I think, also makes us nicer and less combative
than people on other lists, because we really NEED to be here for very
practical reasons, and we really need, and recognize that we need, each other's
advice and information.  With FeLV we do not have the luxury of alienating
each other in order to have a petty argument.  I am not sure that people
on other lists feel so dependent on each other.  In fact, on one of the
IBD lists a woman really, really tore into me for questioning something that
another member had been told by a vet.  She wrote that it was completely
inappropriate for me to do that because I do not have a veterinary
degree.  It was one of the reasons I left that list. I can not imagine
anyone on this list writing that. We have all had such bad experiences with
vets, so we don't put them on a pedestal. Which does make us need each other
more.

Just my thoughts.  I have spent some
time thinking about the subject, because this list really is so amazing, and so
much better than all the others.

said she would be more than glad to help in this matter on giving Dukee his
Interferon treatments.
She is also retired Manager and Vet Tech of a huge animal
clinic.
I have a lot of confidence in her. She is always rescuing
animals.
She has a heart of gold. She has animals that are throw-aways
from humans. Many that have special needs.
She is familiar with Interferon, that is why I trusted her in
helping me on this since I didn't have any experience with it. She doesn't have
access to it like you do Hideyo. She also said thank you for what you do as
well.

2006-10-26 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto

Terrie – I am so sorry what Dukee
and you are going through ---I don’t know if this is going to help you or
not --- but from what my AC has told me .. usually when our babies are close to
passing, their soul actually goes in and out of body, and they may not feel
that pain as you may observe everytime I was losing my babies, I always talked
to my AC and they are usually very perceptive  and objective – they start
seeing their body from outside of their body—and that’s what made
me go through with Tsubomi – her last day or two was very hard for me..
because she seemed in pain.. but at the same time,, her soul was ready to
transit and she was so very happy once she passed.. as she became free from the
body which limited her to do things she wanted to do..

Terri, no matter what happens to Dukee –
please know that his soul will still be with you – so please don’t
forget that….

Love and hugs to you and Dukee.

Hideyo

As I
sit here I'm crying my eyes out having problems typing this to you all. My
husband keeps checking on us see how we are doing. We are in my computer room
with his best buddy "Vinnie".

I have
soft lights, food and water along with their beds in here.

Can
anyone tell me what tranquilizer to give to help him to the Rainbow Bridge?
Otherwise I will wait until early morning to let him go.

So
this will be a long night for me.

He is
crying and very weak. He has never been one to cry. He is such a good boy just
like my original Taz. Poor guys have never done anything wrong in their lives.
God they are about the same age too when it was time.

God
this is so heartbreaking!

I have
given him his doses of his meds and the Interferon nothing is working for him.
Force feeding isn't a option here because I don't want him throwing up what
little he has eaten.. I have given him everything I can possibly think of even
cans of Tuna with juice.

Thank you
Yes, I seen the messages that's okay. Rudy my Siamese does that
to me sometimes.

The answer is yes Hideyo he was given the Interferon by my best
friend that is a Vet Tech. She is familiar with it.
There is damage to his system I guess was too late for it
to work.
He is slowly leaving us. He doesn't want to be touched by me or
his family of kitties. I have noticed to he is limping on the left rear leg.

That's unlike him so that tells me he isn't happy.

When in general he is a happy kitty.

well.
I held him a few minutes ago felt him all over. He has no tummy
and I don't hear any rattling in his lungs. I don't feel any tumors or anything
out of the ordinary.
I think it is his heart since I did mention he had a heart
murmur.
I have also included another kitty with us which is Buggy my LH
Torti PT. She was like his mom when he was a baby.
She is washing him right now as I type

I have told Dukee that if he wants to go it is okay and if I
have to I will help him go to the bridge.
I will be close by to my computer so I can do my business and

Re: o/t ideas please for my ex-foster cat

2006-10-26 Thread Peggy Ankney

We’re having similar problems with Montana and
Scooter.  Scooter is our new adopted
FeLV+ kitty, and before Scooter came to us, Montana pretty much
slept on our bed at night, hung out with me while I was working, and generally
was the boss of the place.  Years
ago, when I adopted Karma, they fought (hissing and some batting) but
eventually became civil enough to both sleep on the same bed at night (much to
my husband’s dismay at times!).
But now that Scooter is here, Montana is making himself scarce, and I do worry about him.  He’s a big baby, and I don’t
want him to feel unwelcome in his own house, but at the same time, Scooter
needs us.  Part of the problem is
that Scooter is so young and playful and shows no fear of the others, but they
just don’t like him yet.  He’s
not exactly working hard to gain friendship either - if Montana is sleeping
in a chair, Scooter will approach the chair, Montana will growl
a warning, Scooter will continue approaching, and eventually there’s hissing
and batting.  (I am slightly worried
about the hissing, but it’s mostly by Montana, who is
negative, as I’ve yet to see Scooter hiss at either cat.)  So at times it’s less than
peaceful and although it’s hard for me to see Montana avoiding
being inside, and I miss him at night, I know that eventually they will all
learn to get along.

Maybe if Molly knows that other people who take in cats have
to go through the same sometimes painful period of adjustment, she’ll be
willing to give Katya another chance.  I hope so!

mouth problems

2006-10-26 Thread Lernermichelle

I just read the vetrinary guidelines and noticed that they say AZT can help

■ Cats infected with FeLV or FIV may live for many years.
A decision for euthanasia should never be made solely on the basis of
whether or not a cat is infected.

So maybe one of the questions we should advise new people to ask their vets is if they agree and abide by these guidelines...

Re: OT: Why is this list so nice?

2006-10-26 Thread Lernermichelle

I think that the reason this list is different is that it takes a different
sort of person to want to and be willing to care for cats with FeLV.  It
takes a lot of compassion, and also a lot of willingness to face hard things,
and also a willingness to have an open mind and do some research. All of this
makes the list self-selecting, I think, to people who are more generally
compassionate and less combative than on other lists. And people withh FeLV
positive cats also have to deal with the fact that most vets are just abysmal
and clueless on this subject, which makes us really need to depend on each other
to learn the information that we all need to take care of our cats.  Which,
I think, also makes us nicer and less combative than people on other lists,
because we really NEED to be here for very practical reasons, and we really
need, and recognize that we need, each other's advice and information.
With FeLV we do not have the luxury of alienating each other in order to have a
petty argument.  I am not sure that people on other lists feel so dependent
on each other.  In fact, on one of the IBD lists a woman really, really
tore into me for questioning something that another member had been told by a
vet.  She wrote that it was completely inappropriate for me to do that
because I do not have a veterinary degree.  It was one of the reasons I
left that list. I can not imagine anyone on this list writing that. We have all
had such bad experiences with vets, so we don't put them on a pedestal. Which
does make us need each other more.

Just my thoughts.  I have spent some time thinking about the subject,
because this list really is so amazing, and so much better than all the
others.

Tsunade, question, and Samantha

2006-10-26 Thread Chelsea Bennett

Tsunade is doing much better. She has really gotten into playing with
toys (was not interested at 1st). I bought some new toys yesterday, put
4 of them in her porch and she went wild knocking them everwhere. She
even brought me a present, she carried her fish plush toy, and dropped it
on the mat next to the door that leads inside. When she was staying
outdoors, before I decided to keep her, she would bring a half-eaten vole
or sometimes whole voles as presents. I like the toys much better, its
cute and the rodents can live in peace now.

My question is HOW can a cat that is leukemia positive make the virus
go away or become dormant??? I understand a false test result, but I
thought once a cat gets the leukemia there is no way to truly get rid of
it. Please clear this up for me.

This is for Samantha. If her totth roots are showing why not just do
surgery to pull the gums back up over the roots??? The tooth roots of
all of my bottom teeth are showing, and they are getting lower and lower.
I will probably have to have gum sugery within the next year because my
lower gums continue to recede. My dentist is puzzled by this as I am
young, 23, and have never had a cavity. Go figure.

It depends on what is causing the anemia. If it is either an auto-immune
reaction or lymphoma in the bone marrow, steroids should help (though a stronger
steroid like dexamethasone would help more, probably).  If it is leukemia
the cancer it might help also.  It probably will not help for any other

Re: To Kat: Oregon Grape... flower essences

2006-10-26 Thread Nina

Hi Ioana and Kat,
I got my Oregon Grape fe online through Earth Spirits:
http://www.earthspirits-herbals.com/Americart/AllEssences/allessences.htm

They distribute for several different companies, the Oregon Grape is
offered through Flower Essence Services (FES):
http://www.earthspirits-herbals.com/Americart/AllEssences/QuinetessentialsFE/QuintessentialsFE.htm

Australian Bush FE has a combination essence, (RR is a combination
essence), called Relationship, that might be more appropriate for normal
"fussyness" between family members:

http://www.earthspirits-herbals.com/Americart/AllEssences/AusBushFE/AustBushFE.htm

The nice thing about fes is you can either apply them directly to the
inner tip of the ear, in between the pads of their feet, or add just a
few drops to the communal water bowl. There are no adverse reactions to
them as far as I've ever heard. Results seem to be very individual.
For instance, some of my animals react more favorably to Rescue Remedy,
whereas others do better with the Australian Bush combination essence
"Emergency".

I use fes with the feeling that they can't hurt, and just might help.
They aren't an instant fix kind of solution, so I never know if my
behavior modification attempts are what's working or a combination of
both. I figure what the heck.

If you google it you should come up with quite a few sites.

Re: Acemannan availability

2006-10-26 Thread etrent

I think my ear is purple from being on hold and I am quite dizzy from the "run-around".

That being said, I am still awaiting calls from the CEO of Carrington Labs and from the FDA.  I contacted the USDA and talked to the main office, USDA-Veterinary Services, USDA-APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Investigative Services), USDA-Animal Care, and finally a member of the senior staff at USDA-APHIS, Dr. Davis.  Dr. Davis was very helpful and he has worked in this office for many years.  He tells me that injectible Acemannan falls outside the jurisdiction of the USDA.  They handle vaccines - but no other veterinary medicines.  He checked his resources and said that this drug was approved by the FDA and that it would fall under their jurisdiction.

I asked Dr. Davis if the USDA removed products from commerce while conducting audits.  He told me that he has never heard of that happening in all his years working for the USDA.

After my conversation with Dr. Davis, I called Dr. Nicholson at Veterinary Products Laboratories and told her what I had learned from the USDA.  I asked her if they had documentation that informed them of the audit and if she could check that for me and verify the initiator of the audit.  She told me that this information was passed down to them from Carrington Labs.  I asked Dr. Nicholson if she thought it would be helpful for me to write my congressman.  She told me that a lot of people were doing that and it could only help.

Meanwhile, we wait to talk to the FDA and Carrington Labs (or rather, the appropriate office for redirection of blame).

Stay tuned for another episode in the continuing saga...

Dr. Nicholson at Veterinary Laboratories returned my call a moment ago.  The organization responsible for this audit is the USDA.  She gave me some contact numbers there and I am going to do my very best to be professional when I express to the USDA my displeasure with knowing that there are cats whose lives may have depended on this product while they took their time doing their audit.  Dr. Nicholson told me this one man who is in charge of the veterinary division may not even know about this but I assured her that he would after I spoke to him.

The mixture used in the injectible Acemannan (pronounced like it sounds - "Ace manan") is proprietary and so there is no generic and they have people from over seas calling everyday trying to get the product.  Right now, it simply isn't available.  Dr. Nicholson did not know why Acemannan Hydrogel is not subjected to the audit when it contains the same raw ingredients.  There is another lab right now that has an audit going on but the product being audited is not currently withheld from commerce.  The USDA has some questions to answer.

Meanwhile, I asked Dr. Nicholson if there was a human equivalent to Acemannan.  She told me that Manapol Plus (by Carrington Labs) is used for people.  It is taken orally rather than as an injection.  She was not sure if this product had been studied for use in cats but she thought it may have been.

Basically, you have to go back to square one and start all over.
Keeping them in seperate rooms, swapping their bedding each day,
swapping their rooms every 4-5 days, using cooking vanilla dabbed
on each one (both the head and the tail) to make them smell the same,
and using the appropriate flower essences in each one's water (in
addition to continuing with the Feliway). But this will take time.
Do you think "Molly" will be open to this or does she think it's too
late to start over?

Here's hoping she's willing to give it another try.

Subject: o/t ideas please for my ex-foster cat

Hi all
I just got an email from the adopter ("Molly")of my former foster cat
("Katya"). Molly emailed the shelter and copied me in part (see
below--I've changed all names to protect privacy!). It seems she's about
to give up Katya because of the effect it's having on her own cat,
"Amber". Molly, I believe, is a good person, and I'm frantically casting
around for ideas to fix the situation. I would foster Katya again in a
heartbeat, and have already let the shelter know this, but it would be
better if we cd resolve the situation. I'm scheduled to speak to Molly
tonight on the phone. I thought if I could give her some hope, maybe
that would encourage her to keep trying. I already encouraged her a
couple of weeks ago to buy Feliway diffusers. I believe she's done this.
All ideas gratefully received.
Kerry

Amber and Katya's relationship isn't getting any better. I
basically didn't see Amber for two days. She didn't come out from
underneath the bed except to eat and use the litter box. Now she
sleeps on the bathroom rug and not in my room because Katya is in there.
I put up the gate keep Katya in the living room to allow Amber time to
roam a bit, but she doesn't. I'll put her in the kitchen and she'll see
Katya and immediately either run back into the bathroom or underneath
the bed. It breaks my heart to see Amber like this and I miss my cat.
I'm sad on so many levels. I don't think I can keep Katya... I just
don't know what to do anymore. Kerry, I'll definitely give you a call
tonight. Right now, I just keep crying. I'm so heartbroken, but I
don't know what else to do.

Re: o/t ideas please for my ex-foster cat

2006-10-26 Thread Nina

Kerry,
I feel for Molly and the cats. Maybe you can help her to understand
that it's not uncommon for acclimation to new homes with adult cats to
take months not days or even weeks. I would suggest she go back a few
steps and confine Katya to a bathroom with a screen door. Tell her to
shower Amber with attention. Amber will soon realize that she has
nothing to fear from a Katya and relax back into her old behaviors.
Katya might be unhappy about this new development, but tell Molly to not
feel guilty about this. She will be providing the best chance for Katya
to keep her new home and not have to go through the distress of bouncing
from foster to placement again, (a far harsher fate). Poor Katya has
been through enough upheaval, enough people have let her down, try to
convince Molly that she will be her savior if she sticks by her long
enough to help her fit in.

When she wants to give Katya some freedom and attention, just have her
put Amber in her bedroom and shut the door. She can give Katya
"exercise" periods the same time everyday and the cats will soon realize
the pattern and not stress out about it. If she really wants to speed
the process along, she can invest, or borrow a 3' x 2' wire cage for
Katya. After Amber is once again feeling comfortable in her home, she
can put Katya in the cage in the living room, or bedroom, or wherever,
to give them a better opportunity to get used to each other without
threat. Tell her to put a small litter box, a bed, food and water in
Katya's cage to help her feel more comfortable.

I've told you, (and the list) about our resident PTSD kitty, Matilda,
(remember Matilda the Hun?). Well, even I, who have sworn to never say
never again, was having my doubts that Matilda would ever get over her
fears and be safe enough to mix with my household. Unlike Katya,
Matilda poses a real danger to others, humans and animals alike. I keep
her segregated, (it's been a couple of months now), in the bedroom
during the day, (screen door so she can see the activity), and in a cage
by my bed at night. I bought a service cart to put the cage on and I've
been wheeling Matilda out into the kitchen when I make everyone's dinner
and into the living room to watch TV with us all at night before bed.
It's made a difference. At first her eyes were wide as saucers watching
all the dogs and cats parade under her cage. Now she's relaxed for the
most part. If she gets stressed, I wheel her back to the bedroom and
she calms down. I also drape a sheet over part of the cage so she has a
place to retreat to. Anyway, a couple of days ago I let Matilda loose
in the bedroom thinking everyone else was out of there. About an hour
later I noticed Timmy standing by the screen door waiting to be let
out. There was Matilda just two feet away, looking scared, but not
attacking him, (I tell you this is huge progress!). Idiot that I am, I
did the same thing this morning with Kimba Cat. Again, Matilda did not
attack him, she just huddled in the corner and watched and waited while
I let Kimba out.

Please tell Molly that there is hope. If she's willing to do what's
necessary and give these guys time to adjust, I'm sure they will figure
out a way to not only coexist, but that having another animal of their
own species has it's benefits. If she's willing to try segregating them
again, encourage her to put a time limit on the experiment. That will
help her to keep her resolve when she gets discouraged. Try for 3
months. I promise you, she'll start to see progress much sooner than that.

Re: Acemannan availability

2006-10-26 Thread etrent

I asked her if the USDA had given any indication of how long this audit would last - and she told me that the last she heard, they hoped to be through in November.

What I want to know is what gives the USDA the right to remove a proprietary product from the market that has been proven to save cat's lives?  Even if lives weren't at stake - what gives them the right to shut down this company's bottom line?  What if this were the only product they made?  This goes against everything our system stands for and I refuse to sit passively while this happens.  I'm wondering if I need to write my congressman.

Kiss the kitties for me,

elizabeth

2006-10-26 Thread Nancy Schneider
The thing about Samantha is that she does eat the hard food and doesn't
seem to experience any discomfort when eating it.I believe she is
actually eating less because of the weight loss as I'm not home during
the day. I know what you mean when you say that you have to be happy
knowing you did your best. I used to beat myself up when I lost a cat
due to kidney failure last year. I had her for 15 years and I felt that
she took a part of my life with her when she passed. I felt that I
should have done more. Sometimes nothing you do can help. You have to
accept that fact and let go.
>>> Tad Burnett <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 10/25/06 5:48 PM >>>
Nancy
An average cat needs to eat about one 5.5 oz can of food each day..
If she is eating much less than that than that explains the weight
loss...

FeLV is spread in the saliva so it is possible to spread by grooming
or food and water... It dies as soon as it dries out but if it is kept

moist ...
If the neg. cats are healthy and a year old or older they have a good
resistance to FeLV... It spreads among strays that are in run down
condition
and under the stress of being homeless...
It is very unpredictable and you have to be happy knowing that you gave
them
all the good life that you could within your means... It may be a good

long while
and they may be happy right up to the end and pass in their sleep or it

can be
a long illness and you may have to make the decision that you will have

to help
them to the Rainbow Bridge... This is a great group and we are all here

to help
each other with much experience and to be with you during the sad times
when
we are loosing one of our babies...

Re: Acemannan availability

2006-10-26 Thread etrent

You are so welcome!  Interesting.  I just contacted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine and talked to a very nice lady there.  I told her the situation and the experience I had with VPL and Carrington Labs and told her that I didn't know if their office was the correct organization to contact for more information but hoped that if it wasn't they could direct me to the appropriate office.

The lady told me that she has worked for that office for over 10 years and has never heard of anything like that...that she has never heard of an audit that took a veterinary product off the market and that she seriously wonders if that is the truth.  She wrote down all the information and she is discussing this with others in the office.  I got the impression that they might think this is quite curious as well.

Thank you so much for the article. It answers more questions than any
vet. The vet does suggest three tooth extractions although she said this
would buy the cat only 3 to 6 months. Eventually all the teeth will have
to be removed. The article mentioned irritability because of the mouth
pain. That is very accurate in Samantha 's case. She definitely is
irritible. I noticed that ever since I adopted her.
