FrameMaker Server "User Interface"??
Hi Randy, Don't overlook FrameScript as an automation tool for FrameMaker Server development. FrameScript is only $149 per seat (http://www.framescript.com). Even adding the cost of custom scripts, your total investment can be a fraction of what some of the other products cost. Rick Quatro Carmen Publishing 585-659-8267 www.frameexpert.com A few years ago, we installed a server-based version of Frame: No documentation, little product knowledge on the part of the Adobe customer service folks. Now, new company, same need. This time, our IT department tells us that we need "software programming to build the interface for the control/security/access features." to the tune of $25,000 worth of software programming consultant time. This floored me since the last time it was a single CD that a one-person IT department installed in a few hours. Has the Server version changed? And the Adobe site says that Server needs a companion and "must be integrated into a solution before it is ready for use. You can either purchase third-part solutions (From Datazone or Finite Matters Limited) or you can build your own solution using Frame Developers Kit." I don't recall us using FDK or third-party solution before. What experiences do other Listers have for FM Server? TIA, Randy

RE: QuarkXPress to FrameMaker
That makes sense - I was looking up a Quark-MIF solution I recall from a company called Goldwein, and their product page now redirects one to DTPtools page. It appears that DTPtools is a brand under Goldwein, and I presume they enhanced it for bidirectional use. Hence, if you really think conversion to FM > format offer sufficient value to you, then you have to face a manual process. Each version of QuarkXPress can only save one version back, so if one only had version 6, one can only save down to version 5. Version 7 files can save down to version 6, but (potentially) with significant losses depending on the features used. However, these loses will not affect the ultimate conversion into FrameMaker, as they are mostly graphic-related. As mentioned, Markzware does make Quark XTs that allow one to save back to earlier versions, but this presumes one has QuarkXPress to begin with. If I recall correctly, QuarkXPress (and PageMaker) conversion was introduced in FrameMaker 7.1. If the Quark document is one long text flow, it might be easier to simply Save Text (export) as a Word or RTF file. Quark always links to graphics (unless someone used the undesired method of copy-and-paste), so you might want to do a Collect For Output first. If you don't have Quark and only have a couple of files, let me know and I'll see if I can convert it to a lower version for you (or export the text). Don't quote me on this but I think the registered version turns off the "Jabberwocky" text.
