Re: [Framers] Maker.ini - Language Setting Question

You will need to reinstall FM. When choosing ”custom installation”, you can
choose a number of languages that FM will install the dictionary for.

Re: [Framers] Does new FrameMaker actually split footnotes across pages?

2021-06-08 Thread Ragnar Hanås
I'm still on 7.2 and don't intend to switch. No problems printing a 20-chapter
book to a ps file (although FM insists calling it .prn which I change to .ps).
I then use Distiller X and get a nice pdf file for printing. I must remember to
uncheck "Rely on systems fonts only, do not use document fonts" in Adobe PDF
settings. I also like IXGEN and use Trados S-Tagger for translations so don't
want to lose these if upgrading. And no subscription fees 😊

Subject: [Framers] Does new FrameMaker actually split footnotes across pages?

Hi, Framers!

We have been using Frame 7.0 forever and it has always been stable and worked
for us, so we never upgraded (especially after hearing complaints from this
list about the interface, problems, etc. of subsequent versions). We do have
font issues in creating PDFs with the latest Acrobat, where switching printer
drivers (we print to Postscript and distill to PDF) can cause slight font
differences. Most of the time it doesn't cause any problems, but there have
been instances of some bumped text.

I think we finally may switch to the latest Frame (will be using unstructured).
I looked at the website demo and it looks like the basic product is the same;
we just would have to get used to the different UI with its pods. But I
couldn't believe they actually have fixed the footnote problem where the
footnote bumps to the next page if it won't fit on the same page as its
reference number.

I'm still a little skeptical, though, whether the new version actually "splits"
the footnote like Word does and puts part of the note on the next page or
whether the new Frame just moves the whole note to be on the same page as the
reference number, leaving a big ugly gap on the page.

I'm also worried we'll have to go without IXGEN anymore, as I understand it
only works with 32-bit and the new Frame is strictly 64-bit.

I love our good ol' Frame, but am tired of worrying about the font changes in
PDFing and having to manually wrangle footnotes. Can anyone give me any advice
on how good the latest version is? Now that it's subscription only, will we be
stuck having to upgrade as new versions come out, whether we want to or not?

Re: [Framers] Unlearn FM 7.2

2021-06-02 Thread Ragnar Hanås
Thanks for the links. I found the “guilty” word when I wrote the personal
dictionary to a file and opened it in FM 7.2 (forgot to mention version). After
deleting this word, I saved it as a text file according to instructions and
renamed it to .dct from within FM. However, changing the personal dictionary to
this new file did not change the function of the spelling checker, i.e. it did
not identify the word, just said “Spelling ok”. Same thing if I marked all
paragraphs for rechecking. Something seems to be strange with these dct files
as I cannot see them in Explorer, only from within FM?

If I go into Character Designer and change language of the word, it will be
identified by the spelling checker. That would indicate that the word is
correct Swedish, ie passed through the default dictionary, but it is definitely
not.

Likely the wrong spelling is in one of the many dictionaries that FrameMaker
has. This article gives a good summary of the dictionaries:
https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/2015/using/using-framemaker-2015/frm_text_tx/Dictionaries-.htm.
It does not say which versions of FrameMaker it's for, but it's likely
relevant for version 7.2?

[Framers] Unlearn FM 7.2

2021-06-02 Thread Ragnar Hanås

Hello,
I am updating a book and cannot get rid of an obviously misspelled word in the
spelling checker, i.e it does not catch it. Same result if I copy the word to
another book file or add it to a new standalone file, so obviously must be
outside document level. If I change one letter in the word, it is immediately
identified as misspelled.
I have tried:
Unlearn
Mark all paragraphs for rechecking
Rehyphenate document
Write document dictionaly to a file (it was empty)
Clear document dictionary
Deleting user.dct so FM creates a new file
Searching maker.ini for other dct
It finds only site.dct which does not contain the word
Checked language on paragraph and character level: Swedish on both
Saving the file as mif and opening again.

Any ideas appreciated.

I have been using FM 7.2 with Win 10 for almost a year now without problems.
There are 2 patches, and which you should install depends on which version of
FM 7.2 you are installing. I can't remember exactly what I did, but got it
working after some experimenting. Even less crashes than with Win 8.1

I do not think Frame 7.2 is supported on Windows 10.

I used it on Vista! With a windows XP emulator (of some type)

Re: [Framers] Fwd: Compatability with FM11 non-structured files

2019-02-11 Thread Ragnar Hanås
Trados S-Tagger can convert FM files to rtf with formatting tags to be used for
translation purposes. You then import back the translated text into FM and get
back all the formatting. I don't know if you can export it from S-Tagger into
another program but at least you would get the text out. I'm still with FM 7.2
doing a good job for me.

How does this sound to you?

One of the participants on the Frameusers list is asking if there are any
applications that can import a FrameMaker binary file for the purpose of
editing it. The company is an anti-money-laundering company (AML) and doesn't
want to have programs on its network that have to "call home" for
authentication.

For whatever reason, they've been unable to get either his previous version of
Frame (11) to work or to get the most recent version (2019) to work, but I am
unclear as to why they haven't been able to.

They are no longer using Frame at his place of business, so all new work is in
a different application. However, he still needs to be able to update old files
and convert them into the new format.

I am unaware of any application that can import .fm files, but that doesn't
mean they don't exist. I'm hoping someone here either knows of one or can help
provide him with a way to get either his old or new version of Frame working
without the need of an internet connection to authenticate it.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Crashes

2017-05-15 Thread Ragnar Hanås
I had the same issues on W7. With W8.1 on a new computer it happens very
seldom. I still use FM7.2 (unstructured) as it has all I need. I did purchase
both FM9 and 10 but didn't find them good enough to go through the learning
curve with the new interface.

Now that you mention it, in my previous encounters with FrameMaker 7.2, I was
using a 32-bit Windows XP/SP3 PC. It would be relatively easy to move this
project to a PC that I have sitting around here. Is that likely to solve the
problem and make life a whole lot easier?

I don't recall encountering this issue is my previous applications.

Did they switch you from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows? The latter is much less
compatible with legacy software.

You might try XP Mode. It's a virtual machine running XP within Windows 7.

There are a number of people on this list (I believe) who have dealt with
issues using FM12 on retina MacBook Pro laptops. I know it's not exactly the
same thing, but it's well beyond the "compatible" resolution for FM. You might
search the archives for "retina" or perhaps those people will chime in with

Good luck!

Hi Tim,

I prefer to do my versioning at the folder level. That way, I never have to
rename .book or .fm files. When I am ready for 1.1, I create a folder and copy
all of the 1.0 files to it. You can rename book components and FrameMaker will
resolve cross-references, etc. but I prefer filenames that I can leave
unchanged.

Subject: Basic question: Book revision best practices

Hello,

I'm a long-time lurker sometime poster. Not particularly active on the list
because my use of Frame is pretty limited. (I am a technical trainer and I do
not follow strict version control practices, so some of this will probably make
some folks on this list bristle.) But I would love some input on this
particular issue. I'm using Frame 9 on Windows 7 but I doubt that is relevant
here.

I have a book file that contains several chapters, a TOC, and a title page.
Very simple. The book is version 1.0. The book file and all other files contain
"v1-0" in the filename. All files have "Version 1.0" in the footer, and the
date of release.

Now I want to make changes, so it will become version 1.1. What do best
practices say to do? I assume save all content, TOC, and title files as new
"v1-1" files. Should I create a new "v1-1" book file into which the v1-1
content goes? Or should the book file itself be version agnostic?

Depending on answers to these questions I may have other questions so feel free
to be exhaustive. Or, if you can provide a link to such information all the
better.

Thank you,
Tim

RE: fuzzy fonts in W 8.1

I just found the answer here:
http://superuser.com/questions/643443/how-to-set-systemwide-xp-style-dpi-sca
ling-in-windows-8-1

In W 8.1 "Use Windows XP style DPI scaling" checkbox in the Custom DPI
Setting dialog has been removed.

So you need to do this for every program:

Right-click on icon before opening program

Properties tab

Compatibility tab

check "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" box

Works fine for FM7, 10 and Acrobat Pro

Hello,

I just upgraded to a new computer with W 8.1 and installed FM 7.2 and FM 10.
Both have fuzzy fonts in the documents AND file names in book files, text
boxes, menus etc. I also noted that when I open a pdf in IE 11 the text is
crystal sharp. But if I save this file and open it in Acrobat X, the fonts
are fuzzy. Text in Office 2013 is sharp. So it seems the fonts are
interpreted differently in different programs. I remember in XP there could
be an issue with blurry fonts that was cleared by going to Display
Properties -> Appearance -> Effects and then unchecking the top 2 boxes
(transition effects and smooth edges). Any ideas how to change the settings
in W8? I tried to uncheck “smooth edges of screen fonts” under performance
options, but this had no effect. On my previous W7, the fonts in FM turned
sharp when I selected “Adjust for best performance”, but then the whole
display of Windows changes.

RE: Translating FM files into Japonese

2013-06-30 Thread Ragnar Hanås
Hello,

He probably refers to the Trados filter S-tagger that converts FM files to
Word (rft) files with colored tags. The translator will just translate the
text in between the colored tags, and then you can convert back into
Japanese with S-Tagger. I did that with Japanese many years ago. The
learning curve can be a bit tricky, bit is really rather straight-forward
once you get used to it. You would need to install Japanese fonts as well.
The problem is that Trados does not sell this as a standalone program
anymore, so you would have to purchase the whole Trados package. Therefore
is seems better that the translation agency who probably already has a
Trados license does the S-Tagger work as well.

Hi,

We have located a translator in Japan to translate a 300-page training
booklet written in English. The document is very largely table based with
typically an image in row 1 and the caption underneath in row 2 with
straddled narrow columns containing arrows to show a sequence of actions.

The translator is charging reasonable translation costs and then there is an
additional 12$/page cost because the files are from FrameMaker. When we
questioned that cost, he asked if we could provide files in Trados format.
Maybe he is not familiar with FrameMaker files.

Anyway, I find this strange as in the past I have always provided FM files
and the company doing the translation took care of everything else on their
side. I received my Fm files translated into the target language from which
I made PDFs.

Can anyone familiar with translating FM files explain why the individual is
requesting files in Trados format? Can that be done – just pay a company to
generate Trados files from FM files?

Many thanks (cold and wet here in Quebec City at 10 Celcius),

I agree, this manual work of inserting soft returns to the index is very
irritating.

Your solution didn´t work for me. On the reference page I have

I tried

>\t<$pagenum> and >\t\t\t<$pagenum>

But it did not change the index output

Still looks like this:

Nhgjgkjgjhgkh ghgjhg …..154, 217
   232

And for other entries:

Nhgjgkjgjhgkh ghgjhg …..154, 217
   232 .268, 395

Any ideas?

The Problem with Long Titles in Generated Lists

2013-06-16 Thread Ragnar Hanås
I agree, this manual work of inserting soft returns to the index is very
irritating.

Your solution didn?t work for me. On the reference page I have

><$pagenum> (the first ?>? is a tab stop)

I tried

>\t<$pagenum> and >\t\t\t<$pagenum>

But it did not change the index output

Still looks like this:

Nhgjgkjgjhgkh ghgjhg
..154, 217
   232

And for other entries:

Nhgjgkjgjhgkh ghgjhg
..154, 217
   232

.268, 395

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hi Ed,

Frame 7.0 didn't support Unicode. As I recall, when we were faced with a
similar problem, we had to perform some registry editing to get Frame to see
Arial TUR. You'll have to search online for the coding because it's been long
enough I've forgotten how we did it. Even there, because Frame allocates
certain key codes to internal functions, some letters consistently mapped
incorrectly and had to be edited manually.

- Turkish text is being transfered from TTX (Trados) format to MIF. The
characters get lost in the transfer. We found a font called Arial TUR for FM.
Once we have the text in MIF, we change the font to Arial TUR and it is working.

- Destination paragraph style font is Arial TUR. Check and see that you have
Arial TUR in your list of fonts for FM.

RE: Translating English to Portuguese

2011-11-12 Thread Ragnar Hanås
Depends on the budget you have. I've done all my books (300-400 pages) with
colleagues translating the text in the S-tagger produced rtf files - no
professionals involved, and quite straight forward. Producing the rtf
S-tagger files is no problem, the filter is easy to use even for an amateur
(I am a doctor, but have used FM for writing books since the FM3 version).
I have done Russian in FM 7.2 with the Arial CYR and other CYR fonts. A bit
tricky to set up into the first place, but then it works very smoothly.

Yes, but you should leave the S-tagger part and translation to a
professional translator or bureau. Don't do it yourself. It's their job.
Just provide MIF files and receive MIF files back.

Note that for Russian you'd need at least Framemaker 8 - and instruct the

The S-Tagger filter from Trados is a very convenient way of translating from
FM. I have used it for 10 different languages, including Russian. You export
rtf files with color-coded tags from FM, so it is very easy to see what to
translate, and what not to touch. Cross-references (like "page 65") are
colored, so the translator knows that that should be left as is. When
importing the translated file, S-Tagger provides you with a list of any
errors that have been made (like deleting a tag by accident), so you can
easily fix it. With mif files it is much more difficult to see what to
translate, and what is code text.

Hi dave,

What exactly are you looking for in terms of consideration?

Translating FM files from English to Portuguese shouldn't be any problem for
a translation agency. Framemaker will support Portuguese in any FM version.
The specific availability of Portuguese dictionary and hyphenation in FM 9
and higher only gives you more control on spelling and hyphenation, but as
Portuguese fits in the basic latin character set it will be displayed ok I
any FM version (5.5, 6, 7, ..).

The procedure for creating HTML help or CHM is the same as you would use for
your English source files. When compiling the CHM set the language to
Portuguese to get Portuguese hyperlinks (for Next, Previous, etc).

If you've never translated FM files before, my advise is to find a
translation agency nearby. Save your FM files as MIF and send that to them.
In return you'll receive MIF files with Portuguese text, open these in FM
and save as FM. That's it. Again, this will work for any FM version.

To create Help you'll need another tool, like Mif2Go, webworks, robohelp, or
other.

Translating English to Portuguese

2011-11-11 Thread Ragnar Hanås

Note that for Russian you'd need at least Framemaker 8 - and instruct the
translation vendor to process the MIF (with S-tagger) as Unicode, not
default FrameMaker as up to FM 7.

Stupid question #843: Importing a SINGLE paragraph style from another FM file?

2011-08-22 Thread Ragnar Hanås
I?m using the Frame Script SuperImportBundle which does exactly what you ask
for. You can also import single formats as below:
ImpSelMasterPage (Imports master pages)
ImpSelRefPage (Imports reference pages)
* ImpSelPgfFmt (Imports paragraph formats)
* ImpSelCharFmt (Imports character formats)
* ImpSelVarFmt (Imports variable formats)
* ImpSelTblFmt (Imports table formats)
* ImpSelColors (Imports colors)
* ImpSelXRefFmt (Imports cross ref formats)
* ImpSelCondFmt (Imports condition formats)
* ImpSelRulingFmt (Imports ruling formats)
* ImpSelMarkerType (Imports marker types)

See http://framescript.natebus.de/index.php?navi=superimportbundle (in
German, but the script is in English). It is worth every penny if you have

Not a stupid question at all. In addition to Fred and other's responses, if
you want to import a single (or multiple) style across a whole book or
books, try this:

. Copy the document that contains the style you want to propagate. This will
be your 'seed' document for the new/revised style.

. Open the copy and delete all the styles except the one of interest
('Delete' from the relevant palette).

. Import across the book(s) from that document, choosing character,
paragraph or table format import as appropriate (File > Import > Formats).

. Discard the copied document that acted as the 'seed' for the new style
definition.

If the style doesn't already exist in the book(s), it will be added to the
relevant catalog for each document in the book. If the style does exist in
the book(s), the imported style will overwrite the existing style of the
same name.

Obviously you can do this as well for multiple styles.

If you find yourself doing this a lot, SiliconPrairie's very reasonably
priced plug-ins (Character Tools, PAragraph Tools and Table Tools) offer a
command to delete all styles of the relevant type that are not used in a
document.

[These instructions are for pre-FrameMaker v 9 versions: I'm not
sufficiently familiar with the new interface to know where you go to delete
styles in v 10, but it'll be somewhere.]

Characters changing when moving from FM7 to FM9

2011-06-19 Thread Ragnar Hanås
Hello,

I raised this topic previously and have given it some more thought. The
problem is that for certain symbol fonts (Dixieland, Geographic Symbols,
Symbol Prop BT among others) the character displays incorrectly when a FM7
file is saved as FM9. Saving as FM7 mif gives the same result. With some
experimenting, I have found a fairly easy way to determine which character
change will take place. When replacing the hex code in the FM7 mif file to
that of the corresponding character, it then opens correctly in FM9. The
result is consistent over fonts, so if all characters in the ascii table
were mapped, it would be possible to find a universal hex replacement
procedure for all these fonts. Someone knowledgeable in hex could possibly
see a system in the replacements, and understand why this problem at all
takes place. The problem fonts may originate from Corel, but I don´t really
remember where I got them from. I have mapped those 25 characters I so far
have found in my FM7 files that behave incorrect.

My question is therefore if someone can write a script that saves a FM7 file
to mif, does a multiple find and replace for the hex codes in the mif, and
then saves to FM7 again. When this new FM7 file is opened in FM9, the
characters will display correctly. I can send the character file off-list.

Thanks,

RE: FrameMaker9 Character Set - Dixieland problems

2011-06-13 Thread Ragnar Hanås
Thanks for the replies. However, I have many overriders in my paragraphs, so
this will include a lot of manual work in a 460 page book. There must be some
explanation for the switch in interpretation of some picture fonts when moving
to FM9. When I choose a Dixieland symbol from scratch for a bullet in FM9, it
uses the same letter coding as in FM7. So the problem seems to appear when
opening a FM7 document in FM9. The problem also appears in body text, i.e.
another Dixieland symbol shows in FM9 than in FM7. When changing the font to
Arial a different letter appears.

Ragnar

Hi Ragnar,

The solution from Jim is a good one.

Also, my current work group uses Century Schoolbook as our standard Body font.
The symbols are still as I originally described, but FrameMaker 9 has a
built‑in Character Palette.

With your cursor in the desired location, open the palette by using:

File ==> Utilities ==> Character Palette...

The top list box in the palette displays the font, and you can select from the
list of those available on your computer. You can select more than one
character from the palette and can type in between those characters, but if you
use the mouse to move your cursor, the palette closes.

Century Schoolbook includes the Less-Than-or-Equal and the
Greater-Than-or-Equal as characters within the font family (not symbol fonts).
On my system, some of the palette characters work, and some do not. I do not
know how the FrameMaker interface is intended to handle these symbols, so I
just accept those that work with gratitude8-)

Your standards fonts my have the characters you desire. And you can also
select from the Symbol font family (you will need to apply symbol from your
Character Catalog).

Best of luck,

Ed DeRosier

Ed, I ran into something similar to this with my migration from FM 7 to FM 9 in
docs I've been working on this week. All of my bulleted lists were messed up
because of FM 9's "translation" of certain characters into different characters
and the ensuing "loss" of the appropriate font to be applied to the symbols
(Wingdings, in my case).

I consulted the following two resources:

http://iconlogic.blogs.com/weblog/2010/08/adobe-framemaker-9-but-i-dont-
want-a-plain-round-bullet.html
http://www.io.com/~tcm/etwr2472/guides/frame9/frame_tags.html

These should get you on the path.

Long story short: I defined a font-specific character format for each of my
bullet symbols and applied it to each of the five different bullet styles that
needed it. I did this in a clean doc created from a virgin, minimalist template
and further stripped everything out of the new doc that I possibly could that
wasn't related to the formats I desired. Then I stored this in my templates
folder and imported this stripped-down, format-specific template into my book.

I have two variables, one that uses the LTE symbol and another that use a
hollow arrow symbol. I took a similar approach with that.

That's as much detail as I can give you on this hectic day, but it worked well.

Good luck!

Hi Framers,

I am haing a problem with the character set in FrameMaker 9 (TCS2).

The character set document lists the same keystrokes as in previous FM sets
for Greater Than or Equal To (GTE).
The GTE character is created in standard font, and is then changed to
"Symbol" font.

[Ctrl][q] [3] => GTE (this produces a small box) or
[Alt][0179]=>  GTE  (this works)

[Ctrl][q] [#]  =>  LTE  (this works)
or
[Alt][0163]=>  LTE  (this works)

Problem:
[Ctrl][q] [3] ==> S with caron, but not GTE in Symbol font
[Alt][0179]==> superscript 3, and also GTE in Symbol font

In my past experience, the S with a caron accent was changed to GTE in
Symbol font.
Now, however, this produces a small box in Symbol font when created by using
[Ctrl][q] [3].
While the ASCII character work-around is available, I am concerned with
opening FM7.2 documents in FM9. Will previously created GTE characters be
lost?
This is important because we are just beginning to use FM9, and all of our
previous FrameMaker documents were created with FM7.2.

I have opened a book of files (created with FM7) in FM9, updated the entire
book and saved all files. Then I checked the GTE characters, and they
looked fine. Trying to add additional GTE symbols resulted in the same
problem when using [Ctrl][q] [3].
This seems to indicated that the GTE symbols are "safe", but I am suspicous
of this new behavior and seek assurances.

RE: URGENT: Need help in using fonts in FrameMaker

2011-03-21 Thread Ragnar Hanås
For Russian, you need to have the font Arial CYR installed. Times new Roman CYR
and a few other fonts are also available. I remember downloading these from
Microsoft. The Arial font is in a file called arial32.exe. I have published
several books in Russian with FM6 and FM7 without problems.

I also got the Simsun font to show Chinese characters nicely for FM6, but don´t
remember exactly how I did this. But I found an old e-mail saying:

You don't specify which version of FrameMaker you're using,

Dear Keerthi,

As far as I know, FrameMaker 7 is not Unicode-enabled. Try turning on support
for each language in Control Panel of your OS, or try upgrading to FrameMaker 8
or higher.

Hi Frame users,

I am Keerthi and working on multiple languages. I need to copy the different
languages and port it to FrameMaker 7.1. I am facing the following issues:

Language

Issue

Korean

The Korean fonts (Gulim, GulimChe, Dotum, and DotumChe (True type)) are
available in the FrameMaker font list, but when I copy and paste the content in
FrameMaker and apply the fonts, the content is not the same, there are “?” in
between.

Russian

The Russian font (Arial) is available in the FrameMaker font list, but when I
copy and paste the content in FrameMaker, the content shows “?”

zh-hans

The Chinese font (simsun) is available in the FrameMaker font list, but when I
copy and paste the content in FrameMaker, the content shows “?”

zh-hant

The Chinese font (mingliu) is available in the FrameMaker font list, but when I
copy and paste the content in FrameMaker, the content shows “?”

Can any one help in resolving these issues?

Thanks,

Keerthi

So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

2011-03-01 Thread Ragnar Hanås
7.2 was fine for me until I upgraded to Windows 7. I then began to
experience a lot of crashes, most of them when highlighting text or moving
borders of frames. Adobe wouldn?t upgrade to FM9 when I tried 2 days after
the release of FM10 (FM10 wasn?t even available in Sweden at that time), but
I was lucky enough to get hold of an unopened FM9 box at a very good price

7.2 here. FM10 has not really met my needs (spellchecking and hyphenation in
Icelandic), so I can just as well continue with 7.2 until FM breaks free of
the bonds that is keeping them from expanding these tools to other languages
than the few they are supporting.

I am in a small company with not really any justification to move to Frame 8
or 9. Frame7 seems sufficient for what we need, and they do have quite a
tight budget.

However, now I understand that even if I want to, moving to Frame 10 is not
an upgrade, but purchase a new license.

Are others in the same boat?

Is there any point in trying to get an upgrade to version 9, and then at a
later point upgrading again?

FM6 on Vista and MicroType Toolbar Express

2007-10-10 Thread Ragnar Hanås
Hello,

I?ve just began using FM 6 on Vista and the program runs fine after
installing the Adobe fixes. But I cannot get the MicroType Toolbar to work
(I downloaded the free version some years ago and have had great use of it).
I copied the maker.ini and the files to another computer running XP and now
the toolbar shows nicely. Am I wasting my time trying to get the Toolbar to
work with Vista or??

(In Vista, the list of fonts from the Menu row lists a huge number of fonts
but stops at those beginning with M so I need the drop-down list in Toolbar
Express)

Thanks,

Ragnar Hanas

Uddevalla Hospital, Sweden

PS I still use the good old 6.0 for compatibility with a lot of co-workers
around the world
