Krikket wrote: Err... Excuse me while I'm a little bull-headed here, and attempting to adjust from the linux world. The reason I was thinking of using the -r option is because it pulls from the ftp site. It does. You should realize though that what you pull from the FTP site is no different/newer than what would be on the 4.9 release CD. It also isn't any different that the version you would install via the ports tree. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the various versions of freeBSD (3.x, 4.x, and 5.x) are still being worked. Needless to say, 5.x is the bleeding edge, but 4.x hasn't been left to go stale. (Or else how would security patches get done, when needed?) 4.9-RELEASE is actually only a couple of weeks old, so hardly 'stale' by any stretch of the imagination. Therefore, the thought was to get the latest and greatest from the net. No, it's not as bleeding edge as the 5.2 stuff, but if a patch was done since the 4.9 iso's were made, it would be a good idea to have that on hand. So I thought it would be a good thing to use -r as a default option. Or am I just using an incorrect line of thinking, due to the flux that I got used to (and wish to avoid) from when I was dealing with the Linux world? I think you're confusing the differences between third party package versions, FreeBSD versions and what is bleeding edge or not. You can update your ports tree via cvsup (read the handbook for a guide) and after that your ports tree will contain all the latest available versions of different software. Whether you're running 4.9 or 5.2, when you update to the latest version of the ports tree it's the same either way. So, given that I should have the ports installed from my initial install phase, all I have to do is the make install clean? Too cool. Thank you for the pointer! Yep, that's right. Keep in mind, though, that most of the ports probably have newer versions out by now though. So you might want to look into the cvsup I mentioned above so that when you make install clean, it's not installing an 'old' version of that port. --roop ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

installing an package pkg_add -rv cvsup-without-gui rehash you have to do rehash command so your shell will search all /bin directories and build shell hash table. Then issue command for installed package. Or of course, reboot will fix it also. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Krikket Sent: Sunday, February 01, 2004 10:29 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Adding Packages and Ports I've done a brand-new install of FreeBSD (4.9), and am a fresh user to this flavor of *nix. The install went more or less without a hitch. For some reason ldap (part of the default package selection) didn't want to install. While I can ssh to the box, it won't accept the password for users and/or root. (IE: It makes the connection, gives a login prompt, but the correct password is rejected. I'm sshing from a Fedora box.) But the big problem that I'm having, that's turning into a show-stopper has to deal with installing packages and/or ports, once the base OS is installed. To test things out, I tried installing mozilla. It failed due to a dependancy, so I checked out the website to see what was available, found a version that was there, adn installed it. But when I type "mozilla" to start the program, it's not found. (Nor was it added to the KDE Menu.) I was able to do a "pkg_add -r cvsup" on the first try. But I ended up with the same problem -- not being able to find the package once it was installed. Needless to say, I can't add any ports as a result. I figure there's something basic that I'm missing, but I'll be damned if I can figure it out, despite the help of the handbook and FAQ... Can anyone give me a pointer in the right direction? Please? Thanks in advance, Krikket (I will say that compared to some flavors of Linux, this install was absolutely painfree. Dependencies should be taken care of if you installed via ports or using pkg_add and the install cd, or pkg_add and the ftp server. Exactly how did you try to install mozilla? > > But when I type "mozilla" to start the program, it's not found. (Nor was > it added to the KDE Menu.) Try executing 'rehash' after installing an application and before attempting to execute it. Also, if you installed mozilla-firebird, I think the command is 'mozilla-firebird'. Since certain app's help programs call mozilla, you might want to make a link called mozilla to your browser command. > > I was able to do a "pkg_add -r cvsup" on the first try. Solution to "Zip drive failed to install".
Solution to failed ZIP drive install The BIOs setting was the fault. I cleared it by disabling the BIOs internal motherboard settings and installing a printer card that I set to run at IRQ 7 - 0278 . This brought up the zip drive with no problem. Then I removed the card and reset the internal motherboard back to IRQ 7 and 0378. This brought up the zip drive with no problem. UFS2 filesystem structure
I am sorry for asking this question a second time. At the time I was not finished the process of signing up to this mailing list and as we all know, the web archives have not been updated since Monday. I am looking for resources that describe the UFS2 filesystem structure. I want to write some code that will pull a UFS2 filesystem back from the dead. It has a bad Super Block, and no good Super Blocks can be found. However, I sifted through the raw data on the disk, and my data is still there. Could somebody point me to documentation on this subject. I have tried googling through the BSD filter. I recieved no useful results. If the tools I write are any good, I will make the source code available under a BSD style licence. For instance, mixer vol does nothing if I plugin the headphone on this laptop, I should use mixer ogain for the headphone. ogain, vol, speaker are all output volume controllers and pcm is for volume control for the input stream, generated by the computer. With that setup, you pretty much have to use GRUB or GAG (I suggest GAG, it works wonderfully). The issue is that Windows needs to think it is the first hard drive. GRUB and GAG can fool windows into thinking it is on the first drive. If you do not wish to install these boot loaders, you will have to change your cabling so that Windows is on the first drive and change your BIOS to boot off the second. Then the BSD loader will be able to boot Windows (AFAIK). Either RELENG_4 or RELENG_4_9 will get you complete sources. The differences is that RELENG_4 is the development branch leading up to the next 4.x release, while RELENG_4_9 is essentially 4.9-RELEASE + critical fixes. (With 4.9-RELEASE being essentially a snapshot of the RELENG_4 branch at a particular moment in time.) RELENG_4 can potentially contain a large number of differences from 4.9-RELEASE, while RELENG_4_9 will only have minor (if any) differences to the sources used for 4.9-RELEASE. > > Thanks for your patience with this. I have also searched a bit about it > and I am on the right track, I just think I need some clarification as > to which one is `best' for a production machine. > > FWIW, this will be for a dual processed server. RELENG_4_9 is much less likely to introduce *new* bugs to the code, but it will not get all the bugfixes or new features that get added to RELENG_4. Most of the time RELENG_4 (aka 4-STABLE) is quite stable and safe, but occasionaly things break badly. (An example of that is back in August 2003, when RELENG_4 was quite unstable and crash-prone for a period of about three weeks, until a bug had been fixed that had been introduced when support for machines with more than 4GB RAM had been added.) If you currently do not have any problems with 4.9-RELEASE and follow the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" school of thought then RELENG_4_9 is probably right for you. Personally I use RELENG_4, but then it is not crucial that my machines stay up all the time, so if they crash due to some new bug introduced in RELENG_4 it is not a major catastrophy. -- Erik Trulsson [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I've noted that trick in the nvidia README (for freebsd). It has become probably obsolete. Try to add a BusID entry in your XF86Config file (Device section ...see XF86Config(5) for more details). See README.linux (/usr/X11R6/share/doc/) also (research tnt key). I've already tryed BusID - the same as ever. In README.Linux I found next interesting things: (1) HARDWARE ISSUES This section describes problems that will not be fixed. Usually, the source of the problem is beyond the control of NVIDIA. Following is the list of problems: ... o VIA KX133 and 694X Chip sets with AGP 2x On Athlon motherboards with the VIA KX133 or 694X chip set, such as the ASUS K7V motherboard, NVIDIA drivers default to AGP 2x mode to work around insufficient drive strength on one of the signals. But I used my card (on motherboard Acorp 694XA with VIA chipset) on Windows with AGP 4x normally. (2) APPENDIX H: TNT SPECIFIC ISSUES Most issues pertaining to SGRAM/SDRAM TNT cards should be resolved. There is the rare chance, however, that your video card has the wrong BIOS installed, and that this driver will continue to fail for you. If this driver fails for you, do the following: o watch your monitor as the system boots. The very first, brief screen will identify the type of video memory your card has. This will be either SGRAM or SDRAM. o edit the file "os-registry.c" from the kernel module sources. Look for the variable "NVreg_VideoMemoryTypeOverride". Set the value of the variable to the type of memory you have (numerically, see the line just above it). o since we don't normally use this variable, change the "#if 0" that is about 10 lines above the variable to "#if 1". o rebuild and reinstall the new driver ("make") About rare chance - I used this card on RH Linux with this sort of drivers and it worked. What they mean by this rare chance? Who that people that install the wrong BIOS? And who is responsible for it? It can be treated by me like a product malfunction... At first when computer reboots I see only 16.0M RAM without any mention of SDRAM or SGRAM. At second I have no os-registry.c on my computer (probably it should be only in linux distro of drivers). I issued grep and found that variable is in nvidia_os_registry.c. I opened it and saw that there is no #if directive at all. After some time I guesed that activation of variables was in tail of the file and in a vary different way than described in docs (by setting '1' in structure). Strange... I compiled with SGRAM (value 2) and was trashed to hang up and reboot as ever. But when I restored my machine I noticed that now the key hw.nvidia.registry.VideoMemoryTypeOverride exist!!! I set it to SDRAM and was punished by rebooting. Maybe I go crazy? And could anyone receive my attachments, is it possible or I'm in trouble? Re: ports question
Why don't you use cvsup to sync your ports-tree? That's allot easier. Some ports aren't working now since the distfile isn't in sync with the make-file. If you use cvsup it will be solved. Problem booting WinXP from second drive
I have a machine with FreeBSD 4.2 running on one drive. I wanted to try dual booting and mucking about with wine, so I decided to install WinXP as well. To avoid messing up my primary drive, I thought I would be able to accomplish the process in the following way: 1. disconnect primary drive 2. connect second drive (so it looks like the only one in the PC) and install WinXP on it 3. verify that WinXP boots off this drive 4. install FreeBSD boot loader on this drive 5. verify that WinXP boots using FreeBSD boot loader All works as expected to this point. Then I hook up the primary drive again and reboot. I see the following at boot time: F1: FreeBSD F2: FreeBSD F5: Drive 1 I hit F5. Then I see F1: DOS F5: Drive 0 When I hit F1, I expect WinXP to boot. But nothing happens. The machine just sits there. I have scanned a lot of material in the Handbook and on google today and yesterday, but I cannot figure out what I did wrong. Does anybody have any ideas that don't involve using grub or gag or something else? An idea
Hi all, I got an webserver here at home(FreeBSD of course) which is just idling about doing nothing. It gets a wee bit load from Squid but that's it. The MySQL deamon is basicly eating away RAM for nothing. So I thought it might be nice to set up a small community of FreeBSD users on my currently ghost-town forum, where we can discuss things when we don't have access to our e-mail. My line is limited though, 128K upstream, so I can't setup a major forum like bsdforums.org. If you like the idea, feel free to sign up at www.wcborstel.nl/forum/ (note the last / is required). If you don't like it, I'd like to hear that as well. Your onboard card isn't in the supported hardware list (from 5.2 that is) and your Intel one is, so I guess that explains your problem. Cvsup and RELENG_4 or RLENG_4_9
I have read through the keeping current section of the book a few times and I am a bit lost. If I read correctly, to upgrade source(I am running RELEASE-4.9) I can use either RELENG_4 or RELENG_4_9. Although I am not sure if I need one, the other, or both. And if both, which order, if it matters? Further reading indicates that cvsuping with RLENEG_4_9 will update only critical items. Again, if I am reading this correctly, should I then cvsup both so I have all the sources corrected, or is RELENG_4_9 enough for a production machine? Thanks for your patience with this. I have also searched a bit about it and I am on the right track, I just think I need some clarification as to which one is `best' for a production machine. Hello list I'm trying to give a html author rwx access to a system directory and all directories under it. This is /usr/local/www. He also needs access to /webspace in the same manner (there are various user accounts under here) - but under webspace he only needs access to /webspace/loginname/public_html and all dirs under it. The problem is I don't want to give him the same kind of access to the rest of the server. Also when he creates a file in a users dir it wants to be with the ownerships of that user. It would be ok for him to su to those accounts but not to su to root or to any other login. I can let him su to www. Re: Power off
I've added device acpica to my kernel and removed device apm0 Now all work very well! Handbook says that ACPI is better to use than APM. I probably had problems while using APM (even enabled in any sort). Also handbook says that to enable ACPI on -STABLE you need to add 'device acpi' to kernel config, but I found that it must be acpica instead! Maybe it's a mistake? vinum - device crashed.
Hi! I've been setting up a new machine, using 5.2-RELEASE (downloaded the ISO images, couple of weeks ago.) I'd installed on an old-ish 8Gb drive OK, and set up vinum to mirror it to another 8Gb as per http://devel.reinikainen.net/docs/how-to/Vinum/ Everything worked fine, machine has been up and down many times, no problems at all. I built a custom kernel (just removed devices I don't have, nothing otherwise different) and not had a single problem with it, except swap doesn't work on /dev/vinum/swap - I've seen a couple of messages about this, but not worried about fixing it yet. As this is going to be a database server, I added a further two ~40Gb drives on a new Maxtor ultra ata/133 card, and set vinum up to straight mirror these two drives. I created a single filesystem, and shared it off with nfs, and setup mysql sever with it's database on the same filesystem. Everything has been fine up to today, the machine has been working great, had a test website accessing the data via nfs and mysql, all hunky dorey. Today, I mounted the data volume via nfs from the existing server, and tried to copy over all the live websites again. Only about 280Mb. And the new server died, with nothing in /var/log/messages. When I got to the console, it had rebooted and was complaining that /dev/vinum/mirror (the new drives) was at fault. vinum list shows me both subdiscs as crashed. (plexes faulty, volume down, see below). fsck on the volume just gives rebecca# fsck -n -t ufs /dev/vinum/mirror Can't open /dev/vinum/mirror: Input/output error I tried doing a "setstate up" on the subdisc, to force the volume back up but if I do that, any access to the volume (eg fsck, mount, anything) causes a kernel panic. So what else can I try? Have I lost the data that was already one the drive (I assume I can just amend the disklabel back from vinum and mount one drive normally to recover it?) Do I need to download a later version of vinum than was in the iso's I used? if so, how and where from? Would it just be better to stick to 4.9 for now? I would like to get this working - I've had rather too many hard discs die in the past and would like to have some resilience in this new machine. Nor does the awk approach I posted, incidentally - the problem being that sh likes to split up its input into variables, by spaces. You can work around it by translating the spaces into some unused character first, then translating pipes to spaces, then finally translating the unused characters back into spaces in each of the variables. There may be a simpler way, but if so, I don't know what it is. Or you could avoid sh variables and do whatever processing you have to do entirely in awk (or perl.) -Chris ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

nVidia Riva TNT2 M64 problem on FreeBSD4.9
Hi. I spent so much time trying to make nVidia Riva TNT2 M64 running on FreeBSD4.9 and I think one of us must die! I downloaded NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86-1.0-4365.tar.gz from www.nvidia.com (it's identical to one from ports' /usr/ports/x11/nvidia-driver). That's no matter I instal from ports or just by 'make setup' I get the same problem. I have a configured kernel as it was described in nVidia docs (e.g. with USER_LDT) and configured XF86Config accordingly to nvidia driver. I have made big amount of installations (tryed between FreeBSD AGPGART and nVidia AGP, etc.) but whatever I do I get this story: I reboot after installation; login; issue 'startx'. Here I see as it starts Ok (it fills about a half of screen with messages, ends at 'Using config file...'). Usually (with VESA driver) at this point screen flashes to black and then to my desktop (I use KDE). But with nVidia driver I still see these textmode messages for awhile, after that machine reboots! (Without any syncing to disks or shutdown process). I mean it hangs up and nothing of keyboard or hdd or else is active before this dirty reboot. Thanks to God that I configured X back to VESA, but GLX became unusable. So I need help with configuration of nVidia acceleration. I need it for I had some OpenGL programming experience under RH Linux that could be ported to FreeBSD with success. Configurations and logs attached. Thankyou! pcm and AC97 microphone issues with 5.2 RELEASE
I recently installed 5.2-RELEASE from scratch on another partition in my windows box. Being a windows box, I still have my windows sound card. Hercules Game Theatre XP is my sound card. At first I was having crackly sound problems. I fixed those with a patch I found on the mailing list. This effectively turned on the amp in the breakout box for the sound card. I'm still having mic problems. Both before and after I applied this patch, my microphone was extremely slow. It slow the sound down really bad. I tried using it in TeamSpeak and that's how I noticed the problem. Everyone was saying that I sounded like jabba the hut. So I started doing some investigating. I've searched the newsgroups and the lists and can't find a valid patch to fix this. I tested it myself by doing "cat /dev/audio > /dev/audio". Here's what my dmesg says about pcm. pcm0: on csa0 pcm0: Does anyone know how to fix this? Is there a patch that fixes this that I just haven't found? Like I said, I've googled the newsgroups, I've searched the freebsd list archives, and I've even asked in almost every freebsd channel that I can find on IRC. I cvsup'ed my sources with the tag RELENG_5_2 and I noticed when it rebooted that I have an even newer release :-) I upgraded from 5.0 RC1, and there were some changes in the sysctl kernel oids. At least the bridging oids are more fine grained, and caused one of my boot scripts to fail. 5.2.1-RC1 still gives piles of arp warnings when you use an ADSL router in half-bridge mode.
